Autumnal Equinox Sunday Post for September 23, 2012

Hey,

Damn, it’s slightly warm here today, and of course life it nuts. A reader sent me a report on Japan’s debt and economic climate. Why is it that governments have the audacity to regulate and demand from their citizens, and can’t control themselves, their bureacuracies, and can’t balance their budgets?

Seems a tad nuts to me, but what the hell do I know? I’m just trying to survive and help my brothers do the same.

Let’s hit the news. I crawled out of the sack early and hit it to the Long Beach Swap Meet.

Meeting at the Motorcyclepedia Museum in Newburgh, New York, September 7, the Antique Motorcycle Foundation Board of Directors returned its 2012 slate of officers to their posts for 2013. These are: President, Dennis Craig of Lakeland, Florida; Vice-President, Roger Smith of Clarkston, Michigan; Secretary, Tracey Powell of Westerville, Ohio; and Treasurer, Wanda Winger of Newport, Michigan.

Current Foundation directors re-elected to three-year terms on the Board include Jerry and Ted Doering of Vails Gate, New York, and Ed Youngblood of Inverness, Florida.

The AMF Board of Directors also voted to amend its by-laws to add an eleventh seat to the Board, which was filled with a unanimous vote for Jon A. Radermacher of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. With a Master of Fine Arts degree, Radermacher is a metalsmith, an expert in digital communication, and currently an associate professor and head of the Media Arts Department at Robert Morris University. He has lectured at the Antique Motorcycle Foundation Leadership Forum and been the designer of web sites for national antique motorcycle clubs, including the Antique Motorcycle Club of America.

Radermacher says, “My first old motorcycle was a Suzuki GS750E. I bought it just for reliable transportation, not knowing that it would become the vehicle to carry me into the world of antique motorcycles.” Radermacher’s first leadership role in the vintage motorcycle community was to organize a national rally for Suzuki GS owners in 2004. In 2008, he became the web site designer and webmaster for the Vintage Japanese Motorcycle Club and served on the VJMC Board of Directors for four years. He later designed the web site currently used by the Antique Motorcycle Club of America.

About his love for old motorcycles, Radermacher says, “As a metalsmith, I appreciate the beauty and allure of an antique motorcycle, and I have a fervent interest in the technical innovations that have occurred throughout the history of motorcycle manufacturing. I am very excited about being elected to the AMF Board where I will have an opportunity to influence, improve, and perpetuated public understanding of antique motorcycles and their importance to our culture.”

About the Antique Motorcycle Foundation: The Antique Motorcycle Foundation, Inc. is a non-profit organization created to tell the story of antique motorcycling so that the role and influence of the motorcycle in our transportation history and technological development can be better understood and appreciated. MORE ON COKER’S MOVE TO CALIFORNIA–Coker has had a major distribution center in Fresno for some time, also, I believe in Portland, Oregon. Coker also just bought Wheel Vintiques in Fresno.

Corky told me the deal to move it all to City of Industry involved direct talks with him and Gov. Brown. I guess this state really would like to see some manufacturing come back. I asked Corky about Califa, and he said some of the laws they face in Tennessee are tougher. Strange huh?

MAXIM CUTS CIRCULATION BY 20 PERCENT–Publisher Drops Rate Base From 2.5 Million to 2 Million and Eyes Growth Elsewhere.
Maxim magazine is cutting the paid circulation it guarantees advertisers from 2.5 million to 2 million next year, a 20% drop, and reducing its publishing frequency to 10 issues next year from 11 this year. Last year Maxim published 12 issues.

Maxim President Ben Madden said the magazine continues to occupy a solid position among men’s monthlies. “We’re falling all the way to No. 1,” Mr. Madden said. (Or to a tie, at least: ESPN The Magazine also promises advertisers paid circulation of 2 million, Mr. Madden added.)

With the circulation cut, Maxim will abandon a rate base it has maintained since 2001, when it was a white-hot challenger to established men’s magazines. Many publishers have been reevaluating the benefits and costs of maintaining larger circulations, particularly as digital media competes for advertising and consumers. Established magazines that head the other way have become exceptions.

There are benefits to maintaining large circulation, but that’s not the only factor, Mr. Madden added. “It’s about being the most efficient and the best.”

Maxim has been working on efforts to expand on digital platforms, where it had an average of 79,447 individually paid subscriptions in the first half, as well as in areas such as events. Maxim is hosting 70 events this year, a spike from about 50 last year and the number will expand next year, Mr. Madden said.

The title also expects to publish two Salute to the Military newsstand specials next year following the publication of one over the summer and another last year.

In January Alpha Media, Maxim’s owner, named magazine veteran Jack Kliger, the former CEO of Hachette Filipacchi Media U.S., its executive chairman. He is the latest in a string of leaders since Quadrangle Capital Partners bought Maxim and other titles in 2007 to form Alpha Media. Lenders took over the company two years later.

Earlier this month Alpha promoted Maxim’s editor in chief, Dan Bova, to chief content officer, directing print, digital and mobile.

Maxim averaged paid and verified circulation of 2.5 million in the first half, down 0.5% from the same period a year earlier, as newsstand sales declined 19.9% and subscriptions slipped 1.6%, according to its reports with the Audit Bureau of Circulations.

Bikers stand guard outside Richland school near where sex offender lived–
For the past week, Robert “Torch” Harvill and other bikers have stood guard near Sacajawea Elementary School as children arrive for class and when they leave in the afternoon.

Some of the bikers are Richland residents, but none live in the small house kitty-corner from the school at the intersection of Catskill Street and Rainier Avenue in north Richland.

Instead, Harvill and other members of Bikers Against Child Abuse were outside the school to make sure registered sex offender Jerry Sharp didn’t encounter any students in the 600 block of Catskill.

“People weren’t feeling safe, so we showed up,” Harvill said.

Their efforts appear to have paid off. Sharp, 61, told a TV reporter Wednesday morning that he was tired of the scrutiny and was leaving the area.

Harvill said he and other bikers watched Sharp pack his belongings. Sharp told the TV reporter that he was going to live in his vehicle, and the vehicle is gone.

A woman who answered the door at the house told the Herald that Sharp moved out.

No allegations were made against Sharp while he lived at the home, but his short stay in the neighborhood raised questions about how a registered sex offender could be allowed to live so close to a school. And it also showed that parents, teachers and the community are committed to youth safety.

“I think it’s becoming more and more common,” said Donnie “Mr. Breeze” Landsman, a biker whose fifth-grade daughter attends Sacajawea. “People aren’t leaving everything to the authorities.”

School officials and residents were notified of Sharp’s arrival in the neighborhood within the past two weeks. His criminal convictions began in 1971 and include charges of third-degree rape, attempted kidnapping and unlawful imprisonment of a juvenile victim.

More recently, Sharp was sentenced to six months in jail in October 2010 for second-degree criminal mistreatment and domestic violence for failing to properly care for his elderly mother and letting her live in filth.

As a Level 3 sex offender, Sharp is required to notify authorities where he is living. He also is banned from school property, city parks or the library.

Nancy Lightfoot said she was curious when she first saw the bikers outside the school when she picked up her daughters, but she was relieved to know they were there. Lightfoot said she picks up her daughters every day, but other kids walk home.

“I think it’s awesome to have all these extra eyes,” she said.

On Wednesday, despite reports that Sharp had left, the bikers showed up. They greeted the students, distributing stickers and temporary tattoos with the BACA logo on them. One female biker handed out the small, colorful pins she had on her vest to a few children.

Landsman, the legislative affairs director for the local chapter of biker group A Brotherhood Against Totalitarian Enactments, said he’s sent messages to state Rep. Brad Klippert, R-Kennewick, and state Sen. Jerome Delvin, R-Richland.

“Our work’s not done,” Landsman said. “We’ve got to fix the legislation.”

Homegrown Aussie clubs beating back American infiltrators–The Bandidos knew the little St Kilda bar near Melbourne was the turf of their sworn enemy the Comancheros – and that’s exactly why they booked the joint…writes Anthony Dowsley from the Herald Sun newspaper.

In the heart of the “Comos”‘ new patch, claimed since opening up their clubhouse in South Melbourne two years earlier, the “Bandits” were flexing their muscle.
And to add insult to injury, they opened a tattoo shop down the road.
In Melbourne this was just part of the cut and thrust of bikie turf battles.

A month on, things would change for the worse. For reasons unknown, the Bandidos would be sent a message they could not ignore – five bullets blasted into their hardman Toby Mitchell.
Schoolkids and shoppers would be caught in the mayhem outside Doherty’s Gym in Brunswick, metres from the Bandidos’ Melbourne chapter. The triggerman and his accomplice, who escaped, were almost certainly contract killers.

But why and for who?

Mitchell would lose a kidney and most of his bulk after several operations – but he found the strength to tell anyone who wanted to know the identity of his attacker to “fuck off.”

There are more than 1000 patched bikies in Victoria, which does not account for associates. Turf battles over legal and illicit business and territory have been fought between all the big clubs since two new major “outlaws” arrived in Melbourne almost four years ago.

The Comancheros and the Finks, who are aligned, had begun neighbouring chapters in South Melbourne and Port Melbourne, upsetting a relatively stable bikie scene dominated by the Hells Angels, Rebels, Bandidos and Coffin Cheaters.

Ballroom blitz

Early on there was a bashing in Clarendon, South Melbourne, which ended in the inaugural Melbourne Comanchero president being deposed.
The dust-ups and rare shootings go unreported but never forgotten.

Since, there have been dozens of member defections, otherwise dubbed “patch-overs”, intra and inter club fighting and at least two international gangs forced out of Melbourne in the past two years.
Melbourne’s southeast is emerging as the lastest hotspot in the bikies’ battle for supremacy, with the Comancheros aggressively defending their patch around Dandenong.

About three months ago the Mongols, one of America’s most feared 1 per cent clubs, were trying to establish themselves in the area but were forced from Melbourne – and Australia – by a gang believed to be from the Comancheros’ Hallam chapter.
And international MC Rock Machine suffered the same fate last year.

Meanwhile, other battles simmer.
The Finks are feuding with the Bros over enticing its Melton chapter members to “patch over.” The prime defector is alleged to have threatened a police officer during a raid three weeks ago aimed at taking his guns away.

Sources also say two Hells Angels were attacked by Rebels at a chapter party.
The Angels, never to be intimidated, have been actively maintaining their standing in the bikie scene, patching over some Coffin Cheaters and members of other smaller clubs. It is believed they are recruiting.

It is understood there was also some fallout after the Comancheros forced the Black Uhlans out of their Williamstown chapter and took over the lease.
But the glue that binds the clubs and contains the mayhem is money.
Although many club members are not involved in criminal activity, big clubs are big money.

And violence is bad for business.
In Victoria, there have been rare bikie-related shootings similar to those on the streets of other states, particularly Sydney.
Victoria Police formed the Echo Taskforce in early 2011, which has taken a no-nonsense approach towards the gangs.
It has bugged them on their national road runs, raided their clubhouses, seized illicit guns, money and drugs and last month, took away 120 registered firearms from members.

But the biggest battle is yet to come – the outlaw clubs are protesting against the Baillieu Government’s planned anti-bikie laws, soon to be signed off by Cabinet.
Other states failed to keep the laws because ironically, the self-proclaimed outlaws used the Constitution to argue they breached their civil rights to associate.

ARRESTING CYCLE DESIGNED TO REV UP CONVERSATIONS– Sheriff Jack Parker didn’t hesitate Saturday to be the first to jump on a futuristic motorcycle the Brevard County Sheriff’s Office will use to help connect with youth in the community.

The $50,000 motorcycle, similar to those seen in the sci-fi film ‘Tron,’ was unveiled by Melbourne-based Parker Brothers Concepts, which stars in the Syfy channel TV reality series “Dream Machines.”

The event was part of a law enforcement skills competition at Melbourne Square to benefit the Families of the Shield non-profit organization. Shanon and Marc Parker donated a custom-built motorcycle to the sheriff’s office to be used as a draw for youth at crime prevention events.

“Motorcycles like this are an opportunity to talk to the children,” Sheriff Jack Parker said. “It will be a catalyst to start a lot of conversations with the children.” The sheriff hopes those conversations will turn to more important matters. “That will allow deputies and law enforcement officers that are with the bike to talk to the children about a variety of things such as bullying, drugs or whatever it happens to be to keep them safe.”

The concept for the motorcycle was a collaboration between the Parker Brothers team and the sheriff. “We tossed some ideas back and forth, and this is what we came up with,” Shanon Parker said. The fully electric vehicle is tuned for efficiency and can travel about 45 mph. The project took about three months from concept to finished product. “Staying true to the sheriff’s office colors and ideas, it was difficult to make that futuristic look,” Shanon Parker said. “When you see it, you will obviously know it is a Brevard County Sheriff’s bike.”

The first season of Dream Machines is currently broadcasting in the United Kingdom and the team is contracted for two more seasons. The BCSO motorcycle was a way for Parker Brothers to stay connected at home. “We have done a lot here, they have taken us in and a lot of people have helped us out in this community and we want to give back,” Shanon Parker said. “We felt it was a good idea that could showcase our talents and help the community.”

LONELY LADYBOY ARRANGES TO JOIN LOVER IN PRISON–
Pattaya police encountered a strange case of a ladyboy who brought 2 amphetamine tablets to the Pattaya police station and asked to be arrested. The ladyboy wanted to return to prison to be reunited with a boyfriend, who had two years left in his prison sentence. The surprised police then arrested the ladyboy.

During a heavy downpour, a Pattaya reporter saw a ladyboy walk into the Pattaya police station carrying a bag of clothes and a handbag. The ladyboy asked to see Pol. Lt. Col. Seksan Reuvate, Inspector, Pattaya police station, Chonburi province, the officer on duty.
Then the ladyboy took out 2 amphetamine tablets in a clear plastic bag to give to Pol. Lt. Col. Seksan. The ladyboy then asked the officer to arrest him and send him to jail because of the drugs. So the officer inspected the amphetamines and found that they were real, so he seized the pills as evidence, and restrained the ladyboy for possessing the amphetamines according to the law.

The ladyboy’s name is Mr. Tiwa Akhard or Nam, age 29, address 15 Moo 11 Tambon Baan Dong, Amphur Ubonrat, Khonkaen province. During questioning, Mr. Tiwa said that he brought the amphetamines to the police because he wanted the police to arrest him. No one was forcing him to do it because Mr. Tiwa wanted to be in jail.

Mr. Tiwa then told the surprised police officer his story. Mr. Tiwa was a ladyboy who sold sexual service to the tourists at Pattaya beach and the entertainment centers in Pattaya. But he also had been pickpocketing tourists on Pattaya beach to steal their property, so he was arrested and sent to jail for 9 months.

He was sent to Pattaya’s special prison in Tambon Nong Plalai, Amphur Banglamung, Chonburi province. There he met with the young men prisoners in the prison until he had four or five boyfriends. But he ended his relationships with all of them.

Then one day he met a young prisoner named Mr. Mong, who is from Amphur Sattahip, Chonburi province. Mr. Mong was serving a 5-year sentence for a drug conviction, and had already been in jail for 3 years. Mr. Mong took care of Mr. Tiwa so well that they fell in love and became lovers to take care of each other in the prison.

Mr. Tiwa loved Mr. Mong so much until time passed, and 7 months later, Mr. Tiwa was forgiven for his punishment on Mother’s Day August 12, 2012. He was released from jail at the end of August. But his boyfriend was still in prison.

Mr. Mong also gave 8,000 THB cash for Mr. Tiwa to spend. So Mr. Tiwa left for home and felt really appreciated for his boyfriend’s good heart for him. After leaving from jail, Mr. Tiwa went back to see his parents in his hometown. He intended to be a good person and work honestly. But after a while, he felt lonely and could only think about Mr. Mong all the time.

So Mr. Tiwa returned to Pattaya to find work to do. Every day he went to visit Mr. Mong at the prison. But when Mr. Tiwa went back selling his sexual services in Pattaya, he had very few customers. This caused him extreme stress, because the money Mr. Mong had given him was almost used up.

So Mr. Tiwa realized that he wanted to go back to live with his boyfriend in jail again. So he went to visit his boyfriend, and told Mr. Mong that he wanted to go back to jail to live with him. But his boyfriend forbade him to do it, and said not to even think about it.

He said to Mr. Tiwa that his loneliness has to be endured, because after Mr. Mong gets out from jail, then they can be together again. They dreamed together that they will leave Pattaya to live in another place, and spend life together until they die.

But Mr. Tiwa could not endure his loneliness and could not stop thinking about his boyfriend — he could not live alone in society. So Mr. Tiwa consulted with his friend to find a way to go back to live with his boyfriend in jail. But his friend also forbade him, and warned him not to think like that.

But Mr. Tiwa thought for a long time, and decided to find the way to go back to live with his boyfriend in jail. So he let his friend buy 2 amphetamine tablets for him, and hurried to pack his clothes to prepare to live in jail.

The police officer had to arrest and charge Mr. Tiwa for possessing a Type-1 drug (amphetamine), and sent him to be prosecuted according to the law.

BIKERNET 5-Ball RACING WHEELER REPORT–

THE ADRENALINE CLOCK IS TICKING

Mojave Mile Sept. 29-30
5 Days

The Cooks Shoot Out last week on the Bonneville Salt Flats included a pass by Al Lamb out of Dallas on a 1000 cc Honda with an exit speed of 263.89 mph.

Sunday, 9/23, 12:47 AM at the Beach Racing facility located in Morgan Hill, Ca. after a full day in the shop. It appears we have most of the pieces in our attempt to make start-up and dyno Wednesday in Napa. We cuttin’ it too damned close.

This afternoon we discovered our 130-link Tsubaki chains (my fault) will not span the sprocket to sprocket gap, we’re 2 links short of a full deck. Every piece, axel to axel, on our 124 inch Twin Cam Turbo-Charged Raycer has been dis-asembled, cleaned, measured while being thoroughly inspected. Then re-assembled with new parts and pieces, torqued to specs/and or safety wired.

We installed, sealed, torqued and safety wired the STD heavy duty inner primary, Fisher Harmonic Balancer along with a Tsubaki primary chain slippin on an old school adjustable Teflon shoe mated to a Primo Rivera Pro Clutch with a lock up head for maximum hook up.

This morning we tore into the swing-arm discovering an incorrectly assembled unit, the unit is missing thrust washers as well has needing a full service for top speed attempts. Arriving alive is in the small details, we’re counting on it. A complete bearing kit, neck, front wheel, rear wheel, swing-arm and swing-arm linkage bearings and seals will arrive Tuesday morning for a professional install.

The shiny Spyke starting system fit like a freshly lubed surgical glove in a maternity ward. But will it start? We’ll find out real soon. Stay tuned.

Todays (Sunday) to do list, install the Turbo, intake and exhaust, oil lines, air lines and the required fire proof fuel lines. Then we string the wiring harness and plug the components in. We’re running a Daytona Twin Tech Gen 4 closed loop, state of the art computer.

Our wiring harness is 95% complete for a plug and play install. Still need to mount the oil filter and the regulator.

Time to pass out for the night and dream about the Mojave Mile next Saturday and Sunday.

BIKERNET READER COMMENT–2012 Harley-Davidson Street Glide Rider Impressions

In reading your article and scoring it by sections covered, your conclusion in no way matches. Counting 15 sections and scoring each at 0 to 6 points it appears you would give the bike about a 50 on a top score of 90.

It’s just my impression, but it seemed like you just had to conclude it was a great bike after picking it apart.

AMA WANTS TO KNOW IF YOUR CANDIDATES ARE MOTORCYCLE FRIENDLY–Contact your candidates today and urge them to respond to the AMA 2012 Congressional Candidate Questionnaire!

As part of its “Vote Like A Motorcyclist” campaign, the American Motorcyclist Association provides many online tools for AMA members to stay informed, including the 2012 AMA Voter Guide–an online tool designed to help AMA and ATVA members decide how to cast their ballots in November.

It is imperative that candidates complete and return the AMA questionnaire, because respondents are then assigned a score based on their positions on critical motorcycle-related issues. Scoring is depicted by a graphic fuel gauge– e.g. a “full tank” indicates that a candidate is 100 percent in agreement with AMA and ATVA priorities.

To encourage a greater response rate to the AMA questionnaire, the AMA is providing an easy-to-use email feature to send a message to those candidates who have not yet responded.

You can see which of your federal candidates has not responded to the questionnaire.

WHAT ABOUT IT—We are hauling ass into another week. I’ve decided to load our two vintage 5-Ball racing bikes onto our new Kendon combo trailer and haul ass to Las Vegas on Wednesday.

We will set up with the Cycle Source Gang in Booth 707 at the Cashman Center, unless something changes between now and then.

Should be a terrific weekend of 15th Anniversary parties for the Cycle Source, Show judging, and nights on the town like none other.

We have more Digital Discovery finds for Cantina Members, and I’m having some fun with the Vincent song lyrics and redheads as we squeeze together a Girl of Bikernet, and I’m hoping to launch a new chapter of Chance II. Hang on, it’s never a dull moment around Bikernet.

Ride Forever,

–Bandit
