WILD WEST SUNDAY POST for July 17, 2016

Hey,

Here’s an editorial segment from The Week Magazine. It hits the nail on the head: You’re entitled to feel some despair over the state of our world. I sure do, even after a lifetime in the news business. In recent weeks, there’s been an avalanche of evidence of our species’ bottomless capacity for stupidity, savagery, and tribal hatred.

An alarming number of our existing and would-be leaders have shown themselves to be clueless, corrupt, self-serving scoundrels and buffoons. We teeter on the edge of multiple disasters, But, my friends, there’s always hope.

–William Falk

That sorta says it all. Let’s hit the news.

New Mexico NMMRO Vice Chair Letter–
Things are getting better, while they seem to be getting worse. As I sit to write this letter I see the faces and the families impacted by so many senseless deaths on our roads and highways. I find myself reaching out to, too many and offering condolences and prayers.

This year we have seen a significant rise in accidents due to carelessness and reckless behavior on both sides of the road. We cannot hold others responsible if we don’t first take an honest look at ourselves, and I am no exception. We as a community need to come together and take on some new roles in order to try to reduce the accidents on our roads.

Each of us needs to reach out to one friend or family member and sit with them to share a story. Each of us will have a different story to share, how we lost a brother, a friend or family member. We need to tell them how deeply this has impacted our lives and how much we miss this person or how difficult it has been for them to live following an accident.

We need to make them understand that it could be them having this conversation with someone else about you. Explain to them how easy it could be to not have these sit down conversations, by simply waiting to send that text, take that extra glance in the mirror and avoid being that careless driver or reckless rider. If we can reach one, only one person, then we will have saved one family from grieving so heavily at the loss of their loved one.

As many of you know we have developed a significant social media presence and are continuing to develop and grow its potential to reach out to our community for support, information, gatherings and fun. If you have not liked our Facebook page you could be missing so much. I keep hearing“I wish I would have known about that ride or I wish someone had told me about it.”

We try to post information about rides, gatherings, news and any information we feel impacts our riding community. We currently have over 2,400 likes and we seem to be getting more and more each day. This will only increase our ability to stay informed on issues impacting us all. With one of our posts we were able to inform and reach over 15,500 people through social media. This has demonstrated itself to be a very powerful and effective tool for us to keep you informed.

As we begin to look forward to the 2017 legislative session we as a community must understand, that this recent spike in motorcycle accidents will embolden our lawmakers to make further attempts to shackle us with a mandatory helmet law.

We intend to use social media heavily at this time, to rally support and request your help and support in defeating any bills introduced during any upcoming sessions. This is going to require hard work and a team of dedicated staff to lobby and work with our lawmakers to insure we remain a free state, and a state which will recognize and defend our Right to Choose. We must fight fiercely to protect our Right to Choose (RTC).

Given recent events around the country and the increase in violence I must touch on our efforts to push for more anti-profiling legislation. The NMMRO consistently works with outside special interest groups to stay informed and offer support for those who are working on introducing legislative bills in their states.

We will continue this effort in order to ensure we have reciprocated support for our state when we find an opportunity to protect our community. We have briefly discussed this with some of our current legislators and there does seem to be increasing interest in creating legislation to protect us from profiling by law enforcement agencies.

Until that time. If you feel that you have been profiled or harassed, we ask that you document the incident as soon as possible and submit that to the NMMRO so we can begin building a stronger case for introducing such legislation.

At the time of the incident our advice is to stay calm and follow orders or instructions given by law enforcement, keep your hands visible at all times and do not put yourself or anyone around you in harm’s way. DO NOT ESCALATE THE SITUATION.

Your safety and the safety of those around you will always be our number one concern. Although we are not in a position to offer or provide you with legal advice or assistance, The NMMRO does work with outside agencies that can provide you with referrals for legal services if needed.

As always, we will continue our efforts to fight for your rights, your safety and your freedom to ride.

The Iron Horse Saloon- Sturgis Is Looking For Artisans & Craftsmen For The Sturgis Motorcycle Rally

With limited space available for vendors on their massive footprint the Iron Horse wants to take a new direction beginning with their inaugural rally this year with the help of Chris Callen, boss of Cycle Source Magazine.

Already achieving a reputation for exceeding the standards in food service and entertainment, they have set their sights on the vendor quality they’d like to have on site.

Since Main Street has plenty of the standard type of vendor available at any motorcycle rally across the country, they are looking for a select few that are different. In their premier vendor village they would like to feature the artisan’s and craftsman at the top of the talent pool from today’s motorcycle industry.

Applications are now being considered for these eight spots:
Leather Craftsman
Engraving Artist
Pinstriping / Enamel Painting Artist
Haberdasher
Jeweler
Gentlemen’s Barber
Custom Seamstress
Custom Firearms Smith

Each of these select vendors will be housed in the same permanent type structures that the vendors of the original Iron Horse in Daytona are. If any of these categories apply to you and your craft, if you would like to participate in a venue that is creating a focal point to showcase these arts within the rally community and provide attendees with a unique experience rather than a standard vendors row, please contact Kerry at info@ihsturgis.com

SADDLEMEN GEL WORKS LIKE A CHAMP– This gel is similar to the gels used on the space shuttles to absorb extreme vibration around onboard cameras, so they can capture steady images while underway. Gels are now used in pro baseball mitts and in the medical field. This stuff is amazing and we have the videos to prove it. Saddlemen developed an exclusive chemical formula. Gel takes any impact and diffuses it to the side and away from the contact area.

A 1-inch layer of Saddlemen gel will prevent a sledgehammer from cracking the face of an I-pad. They actually pressure-mapped seat surfaces and studied where the load was applied. They recently took an two-inch slab of foam and placed it in the seat area of a bike then set a vibration reader on top and started the bike. Then they did the same with a gel pad. The gel was ten times more effective at dampening engine vibration than the foam.

Bada bing, another Saddlemen masterpiece.

BIKERNET UNIVERSITY ENGLISH DEPARTMENT FREE WORD OF THE DAY—
CAMPESTRAL: kam-PES-truh l

adjective

1. of or relating to fields or open country.

Quotes
There was not enough Goya above stairs to satisfy us, but in the Goya room in the basement there are a series of scenes from Spanish life, mostly frolic campestral things, which he did as patterns for tapestries and which came near being enough in their way: the way of that reality which is so far from the reality of Velasquez.
— William Dean Howells, “Phases of Madrid,” North American Review, Volume CXCVI, 1912

Origin of campestral

Campestral derives from the Latin campus meaning “field.” It entered English in the early 1700s.

How do you get a sweet little 80-year-old lady to say the ‘F’ word? Get another sweet little 80-year-old lady to yell, “BINGO”

A woman walked into the kitchen to find her husband stalking around with a fly swatter.’What are you doing?’ she asked.

‘Hunting Flies’ he responded.

‘Oh! Killing any?’ she asked.

‘Yep, 3 males, 2 females,’ he replied.

Intrigued, she asked. ‘How can you tell them apart?’

He responded…… “3 were on a beer can, 2 were on the phone.”

BONNEVILLE RACING NEWS–
Kerry Alter Racing plans new motorcycle speed records at Bonneville Speed Trials with America’s fastest females

The only thing Kerry Alter loves more than setting new motorcycle speed records is making it possible for others. The 2016 Bonneville Speed Trials held in Wendover Utah during August 27 – September 1 will host Alter and his two teammates who represent the growing “new guard of female land speed racers,” including Lisa Taylor and Loretta Flores, considered two of the world’s fastest females on two-wheels.

Alter is an accomplished motorcycle land speed racer and tuner who has earned 17 national and world records in less than eight years of competition. Looking to grow interest in his favorite sport, he began recruiting new drivers leading to his new team which include, Lisa Taylor and Loretta Flores, .the most recent female members of the Mojave Mile 200 MPH Club

Taylor’s first competition with KAR was the Gila Bend Race Wars, where she earned the ‘Fastest Female’ award. During only her second racing event under the tutelage of Alter, she earned membership in the Mojave Mile 200 MPH Club with a run of 215.7 mph. Driven to go faster, Taylor then raced the same Hayabusa on the 1.5-mile course to a blistering 226 mph, earning membership in the Mojave Magnum 225 MPH Club.

Alter’s second driver, Loretta Flores, a 24-year old motorcycle technician from Tempe, also set a new personal best top speed of 204.2 mph on the KAR prepared 2015 Ducati 1299 Panigale, earning membership into the Mojave Mile 200 MPH Club

“I can’t begin to tell you how proud I am of both Lisa and Loretta for their outstanding performances since we started racing together. I’m confident each of us will accomplish the goals we have set for the Bonneville Speed Trials,” stated Alter.

MICHAEL LICHTER’S Motorcycles as Art EXHIBIT AT THE CHIP– Michael Lichter and Rod Woodruff cordially invite you to the Buffalo Chip’s for the 2016 Motorcycles as Art exhibition titled “Skin and Bones – Tattoo Inspired Motorcycles and Art,” curated by Michael Lichter.

Over 30 masters of the trade have accepted the challenge to build a bike befitting the theme for the 2016 Motorcycles as Art exhibit, “Skin and Bones – Tattoo Inspired Motorcycles as Art.” The “skin” of each bike works flawlessly with the inner “bones,” creating a body that blends in a symbiotic relationship of power and beauty, much the same as a human body.

The added dimension of tattoo art offers the builder an opportunity to expose his personality through a deposit of “ink” most often consigned to the builder’s own skin. These craftsmen have all worked for many years honing the skills required to become renowned bike builders. They have reached deep, spending the time, exerting the effort and wielding the skills required to create a tour de force worthy of this world-renowned display.

The deep colors and richly symbolic art of the late, well-known tattoo artist and oil painter Richie Pan (short for Panarra) will hang in the gallery alongside the works of eight additional mixed-media artists.

In addition to creating distinctive tattoo designs, Pan painted and brought the oils to rest in depictions of machines and people that evoke an aura of ink embedded in flesh. His love of everything motorcycle is evident not only in the subject matter and characteristic symbolism displayed in most of his pieces but also in the use of occasionally irreverent depictions and curious design.

SCOOTER TRAMP SCOTTY THROWS BIKERNET A BONE– Under the pen name Scooter Tramp Scotty, I’ve been writing for several publications, both printed and online, for years.

These true motorcycle drifter adventure stories offer a unique niche and have gained me a large following that continues to grow. Once a story has been published in print, I then pass it along to Bikernet, and eventually a few smaller publications as well.

Although monthly now, I started in the mid ‘90s by putting out only an occasional piece that generally saw print in Easyriders magazine—for there were no online mags back then.

So later, when Keith asked me for material to be used in Bikernet.com, I didn’t take this new-age computer crap too seriously. Real magazines, I figured, were something one could hold in his hand while seated on the john.

In time however, the computer age came to full swing and it was necessary that I become involved in social media. To my absolute surprise, I’ve found that social media response to my printed stories is minimal, yet once this same material hits Bikernet my damn computer blows up!

I guess the world’s become full of computer freaks these days, and must also attribute this phenomena, at least in part, to the fact that online media is by its very nature world wide. This has made the publication of my work in Bikernet.com far more important.

THE ANSON AND BONGO ADVENTURE– Been awhile since I took a good old-fashioned bike trip.

When you saw me last, I was traveling with two dogs and my camper. Last month I rehomed the golden and now have my old buddy Bongo. Nice thing about Bongo is that he is 45 pounds and easy going, which brings me to the point

I am putting together a dog and camp gear trailer in the next two weeks, and then head up Sturgis way for the rally and so wandering in-between.

Think any of your readers would care to hear about this adventure? If so, I will take photos and put together a short tale of the meanderings

I couldn’t find much about motorcycle touring with a dog on the interweb.
Can’t leave Bongo at home, and I need to get off my butt and do something this summer.

Like you say ” never give up, dammit!”

–Anson

I reached out to the Triking Viking for help with Anson’s dog. Here’s what he came up with. And of course, we will cover his wanderings. He always has an interesting story, mixed with history and travel tips. —Bandit

BIKER COULD BECOME VICE PRESIDENT–
Presidential Candidate Donald Trump Names Motorcyclist Governor Mike Pence as Running Mate

WASHINGTON, DC – Speculation on who would be Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump’s possible Vice-President pick grew to a fever pitch this week.

All eyes were on Indiana when candidate Donald Trump made a pair of visits to the Hoosier state earlier in the week. The first was a standard fundraiser but the second event was a rally where inquiring minds waited for a possible announcement of Trump’s Vice-Presidential pick.

They were rewarded on Friday when it was announced via twitter that Governor Mike Pence would indeed round out the Republican presidential ticket. Speculation on Governor Pence as a running mate grew as rumors of a series of private meeting between the Governor and Trump persisted over the last several days.

Perhaps one of the groups most excited about the announcement are motorcyclists from the state. During his tenure in office, Governor Pence has been a supporter of motorcycle rights, working directly with ABATE of Indiana (American Bikers Aimed Toward Education) and receiving a personalized basic rider training course arranged by the group’s Executive Director, Jay Jackson.

“I think Governor Pence saw the strong connection his predecessor, former Governor Mitch Daniels, had with the motorcycling community. He saw the value in engaging this group because they are politically active, passionate about their cause and most importantly, they show up to vote!” Jackson stated.

Governor Pence rides on a bike several times a year participating in the Ride with the Governor event, which brings awareness to motorcycle safety in the Hoosier State and raises funds for the Indiana National Guard Relief Fund. He also has participated in other charity rides as well as served as an escort to bikers passing through the state on their way to the nation’s capital for the Rolling Thunder motorcycle rally in Washington, D.C. First Lady Karen Pence has also started to show an interest in riding, indicating a desire to ride with her husband in upcoming events.

Motorcyclists from the state are excited about the possibility of a motorcycle rights supporter as Vice-President. “Who knows?” Jackson said, “Maybe this time next year we’ll hold the nation’s first ever ‘Ride with the Vice-President’ event.”

CONFEDERATE RAILROAD RELEASES LATEST ALBUM, ‘LUCKY TO BE ALIVE’ IN STORES NOW–

ACM Award Winners Team Up With Willie Nelson, John Anderson, Colt Ford and Jerry Glanville on Special 20th Anniversary Version of “Trashy Women” Benefiting The Hunter Worley Foundation

Multi-platinum recording artist Confederate Railroad is back with their latest album, Lucky to be Alive, which is now available on iTunes, Amazon and music retailers nationwide.

The project marks the first release by the chart-topping band in nine years, and showcases their unique style, bringing their southern–rock-meets-country-conscience front and center.

A key highlight on the album includes a special 20th Anniversary edition of the signature hit, “Trashy Women.” The new, revamped version features vocal appearances by Willie Nelson, John Anderson, Colt Ford and Jerry Glanville, who all teamed up to benefit a special charity near-and-dear to Confederate Railroad’s hearts, The Hunter Worley Foundation.

Founded by lead singer Danny Shirley, The Hunter Worley Foundation will receive 100% of Shirley and Confederate Railroad’s proceeds from “Trashy Women.”

The charity was established in response to a tragedy suffered by a family in Shirley’s hometown, where a child named Hunter Worley was accidentally killed in a farming accident. The foundation provides financial and therapeutic support to families who have lost a child.

The ACM award winners are hitting the road for the remainder of 2016 in support of their latest Danny Shirley / Blue Miller co-produced album, along with making several media appearances in-between.

Shirley recently served as the co-host of four episodes of Heartland TV’s smash, “Country Classics,” which showcases classic country from the 70s, 80s and 90s, highlighting some of the genre’s biggest hits. There are multiple reasons why lead singer Danny Shirley is ‘lucky to be alive,’ which are highlighted in recent features on AXS.com and the The Boot. QUICK, New Bikernet Reader Comment!–

THE SECRET BIKERNET WEEKLY NEWS for July 14, 2016

The Salt Flats being what they are. Can there be any salt added via way of salt water to fresh water reclamation systems? There would be salt left over after the water is converted for consumption? It just might not be financeable .

Gearhead
Torrance , Ca.

There are several solutions. First racing has minimal impact on the salt. It’s salt production taking salt away from the area. They signed an agreement 50 years ago to put salt back, but they haven’t followed the rules. That’s just one solution.

It’s all doable.

MRF FUND RAISING COOKBOOK–

Thank you to all of you who have sent me some amazing recipes for the cookbook.

Time is running out for getting it ready by September. So far, I have received recipes from about half of the Reps or someone in their states. Please, your State will be conspicuous by its absence if you don’t get something sent in!

Do you want me to name the states I have not heard from?

The cook book will be more meaningful with something from EVERYONE than with much from a few!

Please check your “help meter”–is it at zero?

Please help make this project a BIG success.

ATOMIC BOB IS ALMOST FREE–
Atomic Bob, Art & the Buffalo Chip

Craftsman and fans will join together at the Buffalo Chip in Sturgis to raise money during the Flying Piston Builder Breakfast, in benefit of Tech Ed Scholarships.

Guests will have an awesome time enjoying photo opportunities and celebrating with the greats! The Buffalo Chip needed donated art pieces for the raffle and worked their marketing magic to recruit talent.

Atomic Dice Studio Arts of North Benton, Ohio received a phone call from Jeff Najar of Biker Pros, requesting a new art piece to donate.

Owner, Atomic Bob wanted to send his most recent creation of a green flaked hand drawn bobber. Atomic said, “He enjoys teaching others how to do art and likes that the scholarships are going to help people learn trades.

It is hard to find people who want to venture into the trades. “I enjoy helping people by donating art and hope the auction winner likes the piece,” Bob.

He referenced an 80ci Harley Evolution built by, Suckerpunch Sallys featured in a book titled, Art of the Bobber by Spencer Drate and Judith Salavetz. When asked why he selected this style of bike over his standard vintage style Atomic said, “I liked all of the nickel plating and the simplicity; it didn’t have a lot of wiring hanging off of it. I wanted to accentuate the chrome and motor components highlighting fine line details with Micron pens. It had a very deep candy coated paint job that was beautiful. I chose to transform it from maroons to greens because it is my favorite color.”

We will bring you the story behind this piece next week on Bikernet. It’s good, how Bob escaped prison to touch the beautiful Sara Belle and create a one-of-a-kind original art piece for this Chip fundraiser. He barely scrambled under the chain link and barbed-wire fence in time. See the whole story next week.–Bandit

AN HISTORIC LETTER FROM EASYRIDERS–
Okay…I’ve been purging some very old files…I came across this letter (attached) that you wrote to me 21 years ago!!! And I still haven’t gotten a raise!!! 25-cents a-word!!! Slave-driver!!!

–BILL HAYES

This is amazing. Wow, 25 cents a word would be wonderful by today’s standards. Most publishers pay, if they pay at all, less than they paid 40 years ago. And according to our lovely government the economy is just peachy.

The letter above kicked off Bill’s extensive author career. Most of his books are for sale in the 5-Ball Racing Garage.

AMID THE BLOODBATH IN NICE, HERO ON A MOTORCYCLE EMERGES–
Amid the carnage on the Promenade des Anglais Thursday night, a hero emerged: A motorcyclist who made a dramatic bid to halt the bloody rampage.

As a truck swerved into the promenade packed with thousands who had just watched Bastille Day fireworks, a motorcyclist is seen in video footage, speeding alongside the huge, white vehicle.

The biker appears to jump off his moving bike, starts running next to the vehicle and then is seen clinging to the side of the truck.

It was not clear whether the motorcyclist was a police officer.

People gather by flowers laid near the scene where a truck mowed through revelers in Nice, southern France, on July 15, 2016.

German Richard Gutjahr told the Associated Press he could hear screams from his first-floor hotel balcony on the promenade and looked outside to see a large truck slowly moving down a road that was supposed to be blocked off as part of a party zone.

Gutjahr, a journalist, picked up his camera and started filming. He said he watched as the truck was chased by police officers. Then the motorcyclist pulls alongside the vehicle, leaps off the bike and grabs the truck door.

Gutjahr told the AP he watched as several police officers on foot took aim and fired at the truck’s windscreen. There were unconfirmed reports the motorcyclist was crushed by the truck.

“I thought it could either be a drunk driver or a terror attack, until that incredibly brave man jumped on the truck,” he said.

A French lawmaker, Éric Ciotti, told Europe 1 radio that a policewoman was responsible for intercepting the driver, according to The New York Times. The rampage was halted when a person “with extraordinary courage” jumped onto the front of the vehicle, Ciotti said.

Police soon moved in and took down the driver, he said. “It was at that moment that the police were able to stop the terrorist,” he said. “I will never forget the look of the policewoman who intercepted the killer.”

Nice’s mayor’s office confirmed Friday that Mohamed Bouhlel, 31, a resident of the city, was the main suspect in the attack that killed at least 84 people and wounded dozens more.

REPORT FROM BIKERNET INTERNATIONAL BUREAU–

I didn’t know cats were on the menu also

Hanoi – A half tonne of cats will be destroyed in northern Vietnam on suspicions they were smuggled from China, local media reported Friday.

Custom officials in the Quang Ninh province seized the animals Tuesday night from a truck after the driver failed to produce paperwork for the shipment, Thanh Nien newspaper reported.

The cats were to be destroyed, along with half a tonne of undocumented chickens recovered from a separate truck a few hours later, the officials were quoted as saying.

Under Vietnamese law, illegal imports are to be destroyed through crushing or burning, according to the Thanh Nien report.

Three tonnes of live cats were reportedly buried alive in January last year after being confiscated in Hanoi.

Cat meat is considered a delicacy, particularly in northern Vietnam, where it is called “little tiger” and is considered good luck. The meat is usually fried or barbecued and served at festive occasions or eaten as a snack with rice wine.

BIKERNET BAD JOKE LIBRARY IS STILL OPEN–
Beer contains female hormones! Yes, that’s right, FEMALE hormones!

Last month, Sydney University and scientists released the results of a recent analysis that revealed the presence of female hormones in beer.
Men should take a concerned look at their beer consumption.
The theory is that beer contains female hormones (hops contain Phytoestrogens) and that by drinking enough beer, men turn into women.

To test the theory, 100 men each drank 8 schooners of beer within a one (1) hour period.

It was then observed that 100% of the test subjects, yes, 100% of all these men:-

1)
Argued over nothing.

2) Refused to apologize when obviously wrong.

3) Gained weight.

4) Talked excessively without making sense.

5) Became overly emotional

6) Couldn’t drive.

7) Failed to think rationally, and

8) Had to sit down while urinating.

No further testing was considered necessary!!

Send this to the men you know to warn them about drinking too much beer!

Late Model Sportster Bobber Solution

Not sure if this is even active anymore, but does this require any rewiring, such as soldering or anything of that nature? Don’t trust myself to do that kind of work

Material on Bikernet is always active. I wrote the article on moving the Sportster module from on top the fender to under the battery cover.

No, it does not require modifying the ECM wiring harness. No cutting, no soldering.

It does involve modifying the battery tray as described. You have to cut off a strap mount so it moves over to the right

The ECM wiring needs to be rerouted to the new position on the side of the battery.

It fits with room to spare. I was able to include an aftermarket tuning module under the side cover as well.

I would suggest removing the snaps for the cover attachment at the frame and using zip ties instead for security.

WE’RE LIVING IN ANOTHER WILD WEST—
and we best be ready for anything. I’m going to start training in close-quarters combat and take a refresher gun course. Plus, I’m already sharpening all my knives.

I’m preparing for the run to Sturgis in a couple of weeks. I mounted my Viking Tank Bag yesterday. I like this puppy. It might work out perfect for the run. You’ll see the shorty tech next week.

I also mounted this Motherwell rear fender rack. It’s very well done.

I also worked on the scissor lift yesterday. I need it to kick-off our mural on the side of the building.

The batteries were shot and so was the charger. I had it rebuilt, and I may mount it into the lift today. Someone made a special bracket to hold it, but forgot to drill holes so it could vent. I took care of it and painted it with a special rust-killing paint. Had to let it dry last night.

Something Art Deco to share with Shinya, who builds all of his bikes with an Art Deco flair.

Have a helluva week, and remember Freedom works.
