THE LOST SUNDAY POST for April 30, 2017

Hey,

I mentioned staying focused and this weekend I blew it. Attacked from all sides, I was pulled in many directions. On the other hand it was all good. We are going to finally paint the Bikernet Headquarters and put a mural on one side to support motorcycling and the Wilmington Waterfront.

We are about to take Frankie’s sheet metal to paint with a new H-D fairing. While coatings are being applied the bike can be going back together with new Zippers electronics, and Custom Cycle Engineering Dyna rubber mounts and alignment tools and some Brass Balls grips and pegs.

Let’s hit the new. And I’ll try to pull my focus back into focus. Focus is massively important to accomplishing anything as Chris Callen can attest to as he went to war with facebook. Hang on for the upcoming report.

BIKERNET UNIVERSITY ENGLISH DEPARTMENT TOUGH GUY WEEKEND WORD—
Lionhearted: [lahy-uh n-hahr-tid]

adjective

1. exceptionally courageous or brave.

QUOTES
As to his courage, he is absolutely lion-hearted where he can help or defend anyone else.

— Arthur Conan Doyle, “Three of Them I: A Chat About Children, Snakes, and Zebus,” The Strand Magazine, April 1918

ORIGIN
We associate lionhearted and its shorter brother lionheart with King Richard I of England (1157-99). It is unknown whether King Richard could speak English (we know that he spoke French and Occitan, also called Provençal), but Richard’s nickname was not English; it was the French phrase Coeur de Lion. Lionhearted entered English in the 18th century; lionheart, the English translation of Coeur de Lion, was coined by Alfred Lord Tennyson in 1832.

QUICK, OPEN THE BIKERNET BAD JOKE LIBRARY–
The FBI in America sent a photograph of a wanted criminal. The photo was in three poses — front face and two side shots. They said, ‘We believe this criminal is in Poland, keep a lookout for him.’

Two weeks later the Polish police sent back a message to the FBI with the photograph which read, ‘We got the fella in the middle but we’re still looking for the other two!’

BIKERNET GUN NUT REPORT–
NRA-ILA Leadership Forum: President Trump Vows Continued Fight for Freedom

That elections have consequences was made crystal clear at this week’s NRA Annual Meeting and Exhibits in Atlanta, GA. For the first time since President Reagan spoke at the NRA Annual Meeting in 1983, a sitting president addressed NRA members during the NRA-ILA Leadership Forum on Friday, April 28th.

Donald Trump ran the most pro-gun presidential campaign in history, and his speech on Friday made clear his commitment to our firearms freedom has not wavered in the slightest. During his speech to the crowd of nearly 10,000, President Trump boldly proclaimed, “You came through for me and I’m going to come through for you.”

As described in a Chris Cox opinion piece in USA Today on Friday, Trump has wasted no time delivering on his campaign promise to protect and promote the Second Amendment. He nominated Neil Gorsuch to the Supreme Court, appointed Jeff Sessions as the new Attorney General, and appointed Ryan Zinke as the new Secretary of Interior. This is remarkable progress in a very short period of time. Trump’s speech to the Leadership Forum on Friday made it abundantly clear that he’s not going to slow down, that protection of our firearms freedom will remain front and center in his administration.

In addition to President, the NRA-ILA Leadership Forum featured speakers from all walks of life, including elected leaders, sports figures, military and law enforcement heroes, and NRA leaders. The theme throughout the afternoon was that while there remains a lot of work ahead of us, NRA members and supporters made all the difference in last year’s election, and future generations will benefit from our hard work.

Click the links to view President Trump’s NRA-ILA Leadership Forum speech, as well as those from Wayne LaPierre, Chris Cox, and others. For full coverage of the event please visit NRA TV.

CRITIQUE FROM THE CHOPPER KING–

Oh Amazing One! You are the Ernest Hemmingway of Bikerdom. You really do have a gift, Dude.

My one burning desire now, however, is to buy the X Bike back from myself.

http://www.bikernet.com/pages/story_detail.aspx?id=13252

Karen (who’se a real nit picker loves Part Two as well. She (of course) found a typo in the Joe Martin homage: “pinstripping “should be “pinstriping”

Also: Chica did fabricate the amazing shark tank but Johnny Chop helped him a great deal. Since Johnny was such a cool dude would be nice to credit him.

Also: I’ve not done anything for Discovery Channel for years and years. The little producing work I did recently in Montana was for History Channel… but it was kind of a disaster so I wouldn’t mention it.

Also: Matt Hotch built the fenders AND the very cool gusset.

Also: Arlen had A LOT to do with getting the guys focused and in the groove.

Thanks for your great work and feral imagination.

THE DISTRACTED DRIVING DILEMMA–

Distracted driving of any kind can be instantly dangerous. Each April the federal and state governments conduct a public awareness campaign on the dangers of distracted driving that bombards motorists with media messages which leads to increased command-and-control enforcement.

There can be many different distractions for drivers but among the most controversial is the use of a mobile electronic device while driving. Drivers should normally refrain from texting while driving. The best way to encourage behavioral change is through ongoing driver’s education and awareness not through government micromanagement. Motorists need to beware that distracted driving does not become the new drunk driving in both stigma and penalties.

Much has been written about the increase in overall traffic fatalities for the past two years, which many attribute to distracted driving. The federal government cannot ban distracted driving and instead has encouraged statehouses to deal with the problem. Thirty-nine states have already banned text messaging while driving. Ten states plus Washington DC have banned the use of hand held phones entirely. Should states then criminalize behavior that all drivers engage in?

Zendrive recently completed the largest distracted driving study to date with three million anonymous drivers over a three-month period. They discovered that mobile devices are used in some capacity in 88 percent of car trips. Drivers during the study period made 570 million trips covering 5.6 billion cumulative miles. The study found that the average use of a mobile device was 3.5 minutes per hour of driving which is about six percent of a trip. These activity rates reinforce the need to educate everyone on the possible safety consequences of cell phone use while driving. But it does not mean that the government should legislate everything that one does while driving.

The law enforcement efforts to target drivers during April as often leads to a variety of other types of tickets being issued as well.

For example, Moorhead, Minnesota city police, the Clay Country Sheriff’s office and the state highway patrol teamed up one Wednesday afternoon this month by deploying a local school bus to spy on unsuspecting motorists. The four-hour campaign nabbed 20 drivers using electronic mobile devices.

In total, officers stopped 73 vehicles and issued additional citations for no seat belts and invalid licenses. Cops in the school bus say they saw additional kinds of distracted driving such as eating with both hands, reading while driving, having a dog in the lap while driving and eating with one hand and texting with the other while driving.

In a much larger effort called Operation Hang-up, New York law enforcement recently handed out 15,000 tickets over the five-day campaign. In the Utica area, State Police Troop D issued a total of 1,287 tickets during the operation, including 124 for distracted driving, 354 for speeding, 19 for driving while intoxicated, 48 for child restraint or seat belt violations, and 17 for failure to move over. Operation Hang-up was funded by the Governor’s Traffic Safety Committee which awards federal highway safety grants, i.e., taxpayer money, for these kinds of campaigns.

Part 2 will delve further into what is in store for drivers with regard to the future of distracted driving enforcement.

THE QUAIL MOTORCYCLE GATHERING–
Makes its Texas Debut at Revival Cycles The Handbuilt Motorcycle Show

Carmel, Calif. – April 26, 2017 – For the first time in its 9-year history, The Quail Motorcycle Gathering took the show on the road with an appearance at Revival Cycles’ The Handbuilt Motorcycle Show. Guests of this annual festival in Austin, Texas were treated to a special preview of some of the bikes that will grace the lawn at Quail Lodge & Golf Club on Saturday, May 6, 2017.

“For the past several years we have enjoyed hosting Revival Cycles and some of their amazing work,” commented Gordon McCall, Director of Motorsports for The Peninsula Signature Events. “Aligning our brands by supporting each other’s vision has been a natural fit, as we both are striving for motorcycling excellence. It was an honor to support their event and bring a piece of The Quail Motorcycle Gathering out to the folks in Austin. We’d like to thank Revival Cycles for hosting us, and we look forward to another great event in May.”

With the help of longtime supporter Herb Harris, McCall was able to turn a small part of the show’s footprint into a scene reminiscent of sunny spring days on the lawn of Quail Lodge & Golf Club. Perched atop a patch of artificial grass were three Vincent Black Shadows and a BSA race bike, as well as a pair of rare Brough Superiors supplied by Revival Cycles.

“The Quail Motorcycle Gathering exhibit was very well received and extremely popular with the crowds at this year’s Handbuilt Show,” added Revival Cycles / Handbuilt Show co-founder Alan Stulberg. “We wanted to further promote the desegmentation of the motorcycle show world, and we felt like Gordon’s display did that perfectly. Now we are gearing up to bring a few unique bikes with us to The Quail Motorcycle Gathering, including the world’s first custom Confederate Motorcycle.”

Come experience an entire weekend filled with live entertainment, lifestyle vendors and more than 400 motorcycles on display, only at The Quail Motorcycle Gathering. Attendees can save $20 by purchasing discounted pre-sale tickets online at www.quaillodgetickets.com. Full price tickets will also be available at the gate on the day of the event. Entry includes a gourmet barbecue lunch, parking, and gear valet service for those riding a motorcycle to the event. MORE FROM THE GUN NUT MEETING–
Research Shows Murders are Heavily Concentrated in Small Fraction of Counties

This week, a new report from the Crime Prevention Research Center (CPRC) revealed just how concentrated murders are in the U.S. Citing county level data from 2014, researchers determined that a small fraction of all counties are responsible for a majority of the murders in the U.S.

According to the report, just 2 percent of all of the counties in the country account for 51 percent of the nation’s murders. The top 5 percent of counties account for 68 percent of all murders. Further, 69 percent of all counties experienced one murder or less in 2014.

It is correct to expect that counties with large population centers are going to necessarily account for more murders. However, as the report details, the most dangerous counties account for an outsized proportion of murders given their population. The report noted, “The worst 1% of counties have 19% of the population and 37% of the murders. The worst 5% of counties contain 47% of the population and account for 68% of murders.”

CPRC also pointed out that murders are often highly concentrated within a given county. Citing Los Angeles County, which experienced 526 murder in 2014, CPRC showed that there were wide swaths of the county with virtually no murders.

CPRC’s data dovetails with other research on the concentration of criminal violence. In recent years, researchers from Yale University have studied the concentration of violence in certain social networks.

In a 2015 piece for the Hartford Courant that succinctly outlines some of this research, Yale Ph.D. candidate Michael Sierra-Arévalo explained that Yale University sociologists determined “70 percent of all shootings in Chicago can be located in a social network composed of less than 6 percent of the city’s population.”

Sierra-Arévalo also cited a study from researchers at Harvard and Yale, that examined violence perpetrated with guns in Boston. This research showed that violence is heavily concentrated even within a given city, determining that “between 1980 and 2009, 89 percent of Boston streets never experienced an episode of gun violence,” and that “more than half of all the gun violence during the almost 30-year period occurred in only 5 percent of the city’s streets.”

Given that criminal violence is highly concentrated, efforts to tackle this discrete problem with ham-handed restrictions on the conduct of the public at large are inappropriate. Rather than further burden the law-abiding, federal, state, and local officials should target known areas of violence with vigorous enforcement of existing state and federal law.

ALABAMA AND SAILOR JERRY SHAKES TO PERFORM FREE CONCERT ON THE U.S.S. INTREPID

FOR SERVICE MEMBERS AND THEIR SUPPORTERS DURING FLEET WEEK NEW YORK

SAILOR JERRY SPICED RUM PARTNERS WITH USO OF METROPOLITAN

NEW YORK TO CELEBRATE AMERICA’S SEA-SERVICES

Sailor Jerry Spiced Rum has partnered with the USO of Metropolitan New York to celebrate Fleet Week and our service members visiting New York. The festivities will begin on Wednesday, May 24, with the Sailor Jerry and USO Welcome Party featuring a special performance by the three-time Grammy-winning Alabama Shakes aboard the iconic U.S.S. INTREPID, a WWII-era aircraft carrier, which today serves as New York’s Sea, Air & Space Museum. Complimentary tickets will be available to sailors and their supporters prior to the kick-off of Fleet Week. Ticketing information will be announced in early May.

The main event of the Sailor Jerry and USO Welcome Party will feature the bluesy rock stylings of Alabama Shakes, the award-winning band known for their distinctive and soulful roots. Hailing from Athens, Alabama, their cross-genre sound mixes rock, soul, punk and funk. Their unique musical sound is a true embodiment of how Norman “Sailor Jerry” Collins lived life – full of passion and outside the lines.

“We are thrilled to have the opportunity to partner with Sailor Jerry Spiced Rum to perform for our military during the great American tradition of Fleet Week New York,” shared Alabama Shakes lead singer and guitarist, Brittany Howard.

In addition to what is expected to be an amazing performance by Alabama Shakes, our service members will enjoy BBQ-style fare and an array of other activities to kick-off this great American tradition.

The USO of Metropolitan New York and Fleet Week New York partnership is a special passion point for Sailor Jerry Spiced Rum, created to honor the late Norman Collins. Collins was born on January 14th, 1911, and quickly found his aptitude for tattooing while traveling the country, hopping freight trains with a man named “Big Mike” who taught him the hand-pricking method.

At 19, Collins joined the U.S. Navy where he was exposed to the art and culture of Southeast Asia. Following his naval service, Collins made WWII-era Honolulu his home and continued honing his skills as a tattoo artist.

Sailors on Shore Leave in Honolulu would wait in line for hours outside Collins’ Hotel Street tattoo shop to be inked by the master himself. Not one to rest idly, Collins also became a licensed skipper of a large three-masted schooner, played the saxophone in his own band, and frequently hosted a radio show.

These personal passions are now celebrated through Sailor Jerry Spiced Rum and shared with likeminded individuals.

“We are so proud to continue our support of and partnership with Fleet Week New York to celebrate the servicemen and women, and to honor the legacy of Norman ‘Sailor Jerry’ Collins, who spent his post-service life inking sailors out of his shop in Honolulu,” shared Josh Hayes, Senior Brand Manager of Sailor Jerry Spiced Rum. “We challenged ourselves to elevate last year’s successful program. Together with Alabama Shakes, and our new partnership with the USO of Metropolitan New York, we are excited to welcome members of our sea services for an amazing Fleet Week New York 2017.”

For over 75 years, the USO has been the nation’s leading organization to serve the men and women in the U.S. military, and their families, throughout their time in uniform. From the moment they join, through their assignments and deployments, and as they transition back to their communities, the USO is always by their side.

“We are excited to welcome Sailor Jerry Spiced Rum as a partner to the USO of Metropolitan New York,” said Cathy de Silva, Chief Development Officer. “Fleet Week New York is a time-honored celebration of Sailors, Marines, and Coast Guardsmen and a great way to kick-off this exciting partnership. We look forward to many more events and programs with Sailor Jerry to be able to express our gratitude and appreciation for the service and sacrifice made by our service men and women.”

Fleet Week New York will be celebrating its 29th anniversary this year. This is an unparalleled opportunity for the residents and visitors of New York and the surrounding tri-state area to meet the military members who serve our country.

“With the Sailor Jerry Welcome Party, Alabama Shakes, and our involvement with USO of Metropolitan New York, Fleet Week New York 2017 is going to be a terrific week for visitors and locals alike,” added Hayes.

KEEP THE BIKERNET BAD JOKE LIBRARY WIDE OPEN–
A jumbo jet is making its final approach to Tampa Airport ..

The pilot comes on the intercom, ‘This is your Captain…
We’re on our final descent into Tampa . I want to thank you for flying with us today and hope you enjoy your stay in the Tampa Bay area’.

He forgets to switch off the intercom. Now the whole plane can hear his conversation from the cockpit.

The co-pilot can be heard saying to the pilot, ‘So, Skip, whatcha got planned while we’re in Tampa ?’

‘Well,’ says the skipper, ‘first I’m gonna check into the hotel, take a big crap….then I’m gonna take that new stewardess with the big boobs out for dinner…. I’m gonna wine and dine her, take her back to my room and give her a ride on the baloney pony all night long.’

Aghast and amused, everyone on the plane hears this and immediately begins looking up and down the aisle, trying to figure out who this new stewardess is that the pilot’s talking about.

Meanwhile, the new stewardess is seated at the very back of the plane. She is so embarrassed that she starts running toward the cockpit to turn the intercom off. Halfway down the aisle, she trips over an old lady’s bag and down she goes.

The old lady leans over and says: ‘No need to hurry, dear. He’s gotta land the plane and take a shit first.’

TRAILBLAZER BANQUET REVIEW

WHEW! Another banquet come and gone and after a short break we will start working on the next one. The weather was great and the turnout was big.

Tom White, and his #1 assistant, Brian Farnsworth , did a fine job of organizing the Tom Cates Memorial Bike Show. There were some really interesting bikes with fascinating histories. Thanks to everyone who participated.

I would like to thank several friends for their much needed help, from set up to ticketing. Ernie Aragon, Susie Ellsworth, Kathy and Darryl Hurst, Chris McEntee, Mike Harper and J.R. Rawls. Love you and thank you.

A special thank you for Mary Morley. She attends the Board meetings and helps whenever needed. This year she removed wine labels and replaced them for our toast. About 200 bottles and they all made it to the banquet intact. Usually Keith’s job, but he was a bit under the weather. So happy to see him on stage. The show wouldn’t be the same without him.

As you know, it was a special night for me. I should have said something besides “It has been my pleasure”, but that kind of summed it up and whatever I would have said ,once I got started, would have exceeded my time limit and Keith and Don would have hauled me off stage with a hook. I do thank all of you for the thanks you’s, hugs, congrats, kind words, notes on Facebook and smiles. It was wonderful and an honor. Thank you again.

While I am at it, I would really like to get some time to do more traveling so I am looking for an assistant who could do the newsletter every once in a while. They would have to attend Board meetings in Irvine, so that kind of limits the prospects, but maybe there is an individual, or man and wife team, who is familiar with motorcycle racing, racers, and etc. and would love to help out. Please let me know if you are interested.

SO WHAT’S COMING TO BIKERNET—
We have an excellent story coming, which supports Love Juggs. Gabe, a veteran rode on several Hoka Hey and Iron Butt rides and Love Jugs kept his motorcycle cool over the long miles.

We will bring you the Flo Throne techs, and two Dyna techs quick. And I need to find time to work on my bronze effort.

Plus, of course we will start stories on my swap meet build. I’m hoping to pick up my old rebuilt glide front end from Greg this coming week and Dr. Hamsters Knucklehead frame and stock springer from Dr. John.

We have a feature coming your way from Paul Platts, at JIMS, his chopper build. I’m working with Eric Bennitt on his FXR build for the Born Free FXR show, and we may just have the oldest American Made bike ever coming to Bikernet. It’s a secret, but here’s a teaser shot, 1899.

We seem to be hooking it up on many fronts. And some longtime tenants in the front of the building (the restaurant portion) are leaving. Finally, we will clean and spruce up the area. Another project.

Hang on and Ride Free, goddammit.
