TUNING SUNDAY POST for July 9, 2017

Hey,

We are scrambling, as usual, trying to save the world and build cool motorcycles. What more could be better, unless, like Jeremiah found a new girl and Bandit found another bottle of “The good stuff.”

We talked to Willy about our 5-Ball Racing bike trailer for the run to Sturgis. I spoke to Mr. Patina about tuning and servicing the 5-Ball van for the run.

I started a 1928 Shovelhead reconfiguration day before yesterday and ran into some problems, changed my angle on the job and completed it yesterday. Uncle Monkey would have loved this.

Next week you will see the new Paughco Bars and solid brass risers on the Shovelhead. It has a new battery and it’s ready to rock toward the badlands.

Let’s hit it.

BIKERNET BAD JOKE LIBRARY IS WIDE OPEN–
A mother taught her son to go to the bathroom by the numbers. “1. Open your fly. 2. Take out your equipment. 3. Pull back the skin. 4. Do your business. 5. Let the skin forward. 6. Stow your equipment. 7. Close your fly.”

She checked on him often to make sure he had learned his lesson, and each time heard him through the outhouse door saying, “1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6. 7.”

She was pleased with his progress until that day when she passed the bathroom door and heard, “3-5, 3-5, 3-5, 3-5, 3-5, 3-5.”

DOCUMENTARY OF THE WEEK–

What the Health is the groundbreaking follow-up film from the creators of the award-winning documentary Cowspiracy. The film exposes the collusion and corruption in government and big business that is costing us trillions of healthcare dollars, and keeping us sick.

What The Health is a surprising, and at times hilarious, investigative documentary that will be an eye-opener for everyone concerned about our nation’s health and how big business influences it.

Loretta Lynn Ranch to host Tennessee Motorcycles & Music Revival
June 7th, 2017

The Loretta Lynn Ranch will host a five-day music and motorcycle revival this fall, the rural recreational facility announced Monday.

The Tennessee Motorcycle and Music Revival will be held Sept. 28-Oct. 1 in Hurricane Mills and will feature “Loretta’s Ride for Mission 22,” a charity ride that benefits Mission 22, an organization that provides treatment programs for post-traumatic stress disorder and traumatic brain injuries while raising awareness on the issue of veteran suicide.

“We’ve been having motorcycles here forever with the AMA and all year long thousands of people riding into camp at the Ranch. This is what we do here and I’m so excited for this new one to happen,” Lynn said in a news release.

The event will feature “live music at multiple locations, a variety of entertainment, specialty food trucks, premium and primitive camping sites, vendors and plenty of riding,” according to a news release.

Riders can camp, park RVs, and special VIP passes will grant revival-goers first access to reserve cabins and premium full hook-ups for RVs.

Musician lineups, specific events, and other details have yet to be announced.

JUDGE SENTENCED FOR VIOLATING TERMS OF ARREST–
A City Court judge in New York was sentenced Thursday to 60 days in jail plus three years probation for violating the conditions of her sentence for a 2016 drunken-driving conviction.

Before Judge Leticia Astacio’s sentence was handed down, she told Judge Stephen Aronson of Canandaigua City Court that she had complied with everything the court had asked of her.

In February 2016, Astacio was charged with misdemeanor driving while intoxicated. A state trooper testified he found Astacio’s SUV on the side of an interstate with extensive front-end damage and her side tires flat.

In August, she was found guilty of driving while intoxicated after a bench trial. Submitting to random drug tests and abstaining from alcohol were among the conditions of her sentence. In June, she was found guilty of violating those terms.

READER COMMENT ON SHOVELHEAD MODS–
Looks like you will put a wider radial tire on the back of that board track shovel for Sturgis.

The derby covers you had etched are really cool. I’ve seen some of that type of work done on a brother’s bike. He passed away last year. He was a Frankenstein with a bass guitar, like the old Boris Karloff actor. Looked really cool.

Still waiting on yall’s write up of Hollister rally.

A TESTAMENT TO DRIVER COURTESY–
Though declaring June as Lane Courtesy Month allows the NMA to shine a spotlight on the importance of keeping right to allow faster traffic to pass, what shouldn’t be lost in the shuffle is that lane courtesy is a 24/7/365 principle.

If not practiced universally, the benefits can easily be lost. Put another way, it only takes one driver camping out in the left lane to cause traffic tie-ups and to raise the ire of fellow road users. When that happens rarely is safe driving a byproduct.

In looking back on last month’s lane courtesy education campaign, we thought there may be no better way to keep the issue in front of the public than to share a note we received from Ken Willis, NMA Colorado member, with some personal observations about driver courtesy:

Long ago I read somewhere that when you act courteously toward others your heart likes that. Since I’m a lawyer (retired) that might not have come natural for me.

I’ve always stopped to allow pedestrians to cross the street. That might be because I was hit by a car when I was 8 years old and spent 3 months in the hospital (they kept you longer in those days, 1953).

After reading about how being courteous toward others might just maintain a healthy heart, I made it my leitmotif on the road. Although I usually drive fast, I never fail to let another driver into my lane and I switch lanes as soon as I can when I see a driver behind me who wants to pass.

If someone passes me, I slow down (if I can so safely) to make it easier for them. Basically, even though I may be in a hurry I allow any other driver who want the right of way to have it. When another driver gives me the right of way I always wave a “thank you.”

I even give way to big rigs on the interstate to allow then to move into the left lane to pass another big rig, even though I know that will result in a rolling road block for the next mile or so. I know those guys make their money by getting the goods to market as soon as possible. They also know the speed preferred by their engine for the best gas mileage so they try to maintain that.

Now I’m an old guy but I still love to ride a motorcycle pretty fast and I’m usually a little over the speed limit in the car when possible (and safe).

Apparently being courteous to other drivers on the road works well for me. My heart is healthy and I have never had an accident. I have received a few speeding tickets, but very few. I’ve been stopped by the cops a lot more often than I’ve been ticketed. I have a formula for courteously dealing with them as well, and they seem to like it.

A lesson about courtesy but also a formula for safer roads and more enjoyable travel.

DUCATI NEWS–
Ducati 1299 Panigale R Final Edition: a tribute to the legendary twin-cylinder engine, the most victorious in SBK World Championship history

• 209 hp* Superquadro 1299 engine with components derived from Ducati Corse in a Panigale R chassis, this bike is destined for cult status
• Ducati CEO Claudio Domenicali and the riders of Aruba.it Racing–Ducati team to present the new special Ducati at Laguna Seca
• Chaz Davies and Marco Melandri to race with a “Final Edition” livery

An excellent bike, born out of respect and admiration for the engine that has made Ducati history and written the World Superbike Championship record books. The new 1299 Panigale R Final Edition is more than just a bike with a dedicated color scheme or a limited edition. With a tricolor livery, as eye-catching as it is evocative, it offers a fitting tribute to Ducati’s iconic twin-cylinder power unit, which reaches its peak on this latest bike.

For its world preview, Ducati has chosen round eight of the World Superbike Championship, taking place this weekend at Laguna Seca (California-US), where Claudio Domenicali, CEO of Ducati Motor Holding, unveiled the new 1299 Panigale R Final Edition together with Chaz Davies and Marco Melandri (the two official Aruba.it Racing–Ducati riders and stars of the excellent presentation video).

This latest built-in-Bologna gem offers unparalleled technology, performance, and design. A Euro 4 compliant road bike, each 1299 Panigale R Final Edition is individually numbered. An offshoot of the 1299 Superleggera engine, the Final Edition Superquadro packs a 209 hp* punch at 11,000 rpm and a torque of 14.5 kg at 9,000 rpm. It features a lighter crankshaft with a larger crank pin and tungsten balancing pads, while the con-rods, like the intake-exhaust valves, are made of titanium. As on Superbike engines, the two 116 mm diameter, pistons have just two segments and slide on steel cylinder liners.

Developed by Ducati Corse, the ultra-compact monocoque structure incorporates the airbox and plays a pivotal role in containing the dry weight of the 1299 Panigale R Final Edition to just 179 kg**.

The chassis set-up on this latest Ducati Supersport is the same as that on the Panigale R, characterized by Öhlins mechanical suspension and a 24° rake.

Equally sophisticated and light is the complete all-titanium Akrapovic exhaust with high dual silencer (Euro 4 compliant), just like the one on the Panigale R that competes in the World Superbike championship.

The electronics package features the Bosch Inertial Measurement Unit (IMU) and is equipped with ABS Cornering, Ducati Wheelie Control EVO (DWC EVO), Ducati Traction Control EVO (DTC EVO) and Engine Brake Control (EBC). These systems have default settings linked to the selected Riding Mode (Race, Sport, and Wet) but can be personalized as desired.

Top-drawer tech content and the all-new tricolor livery ensure the 1299 Panigale R Final Edition is set to gain cult status among the vast community of Ducati twin-cylinder aficionados.

The 1299 Panigale R Final Edition will play a pivotal role throughout the weekend at Laguna Seca. On Saturday morning, immediately after the Superpole, the bike will go on display both at Ducati Island (the space Ducati traditionally sets aside for its fans during American events) and inside the Paddock Show.

And, to complete this historic moment, the Aruba it Racing–Ducati team has decided to celebrate the arrival of the new 1299 Panigale R Final Edition by decking out its two official race bikes in the same special livery, to be used by Chaz Davies and Marco Melandri on Saturday in Race 1 and on Sunday in Race 2.

BIKERNET BAD JOKE LIBRARY IS STILL OPEN–

On the first day of school, the children brought gifts for their teacher. The supermarket manager’s daughter brought the teacher a basket of assorted fruit.

The florist’s son brought the teacher a bouquet of flowers.

The candy-store owner’s daughter gave the teacher a pretty box of candy.

Then the liquor-store owner’s son brought up a big, heavy box. The teacher lifted it up and noticed that it was leaking a little bit. She touched a drop of the liquid with her finger and tasted it.

“Is it wine?” she guessed.

“No,” the boy replied.

She tasted another drop and asked, “Champagne?”

“No,” said the little boy, “It’s a puppy.”

THIS IS A QUICKIE—
But the week will be packed and we are starting our mural effort on the side of the building next week. Hang on for the progress reports.

Sturgis is the main gathering point of the industry each year. For some of us it’s an annual planning session. I was working on a bronze sculpture when my grandson wrecked his dyna. The sculpture made progress, but not enough to make the Sturgis effort this year. Next year.

We are taking two crazy customs to Sturgis this year. The 5-Ball factory racer and the 1928 Shovelhead. Don’t think my Panhead will make it. That’s okay. The engine needs serious consideration. The paint might be done in time.

This year turned into a wild mofo in my life. A batch of challenges, but they will all come true. Amazing.

Ride free forever!
