Hey,
We are about to witness changes in the industry and they’re coming at us fast. Change is inevitable. But it always gives us the opportunity to improve.
I think the young riders get it today. It’s all about the build, the party, the race and the fun. We came from an era of struggle, but we were lucky. Our fathers fought and so did their fathers.
Kids have the opportunity to learn from our mistakes and learn from the scientific community. Maybe after three million years man has come to a clarification. It’s all about enjoyment today, the ride, love and creativity. Bikers get it.
Let’s hit the news:

Fall may be right around the corner, but the newest Pickup & Coming artist Scott Brantley is keeping summer around a little longer with his single “My Cooler.” The Georgia native stopped by “The Pickup” headquarters.
Last time “The Pickup” went behind the scenes Hank Jr.’s all new “Are You Ready For Some Football.” In this episode, “The Pickup” has an exclusive with his rowdy friends Florida Georgia Line and Jason Derulo about what it means to them to be part of such an iconic anthem.
As previously mentioned on “The Pickup,” Dolly Parton has announced her debut children’s album called I Believe In You. “The Pickup” was on hand when Parton performed some of the tracks for a group of children, and got to catch up with her backstage where she talked about the music on the album. The album will be available digitally on September 29 and physical copies will be available October 13.

FROM THE MOTORCYCLE PROFILING PROJECT– Harley-Davidson Dealer Bans Motorcycle Colors at Bike Night
A Harley Davidson dealership located in California (Quaid HD) agreed to a “no motorcycle colors” policy as a condition of a SPECIAL EVENTS PERMIT application provided by the City of Loma Linda.
The application was signed by Selene Hinckley of Quaid Harley-Davison. It is well established that motorcycle club colors are protected by the First Amendment from government discrimination.
Loma Linda’s permit requirement is a blatant infringement on the protected rights of expression and association.
And Harley Davidson, by being complicit, is arguably in collusion with the local PD and may therefore be liable under the state actor doctrine.
Maybe more important, Harley-Davidson is discriminating against the very foundations that their brand rests upon. Can you imagine the economic impact if motorcycle clubs, their members, their friends, and their families refused to buy motorcycles or apparel from Harley-Davidson?
The National Council of Clubs (NCOC), a group of motorcycle clubs dedicated to advancing the legal, legislative, and political interests of motorcyclists nationwide, has reported to the MPP that they will be sending an official complaint to the City of Loma Linda requesting that the discriminatory “no colors or cuts allowed” condition be removed from all policies, permits or procedures.
Additionally, the NCOC intends to send a complaint to Harley-Davidson, Quaid and Corporate, reminding them that they are a complicit party to unconstitutional behavior and that abandoning the club community is a potential economic disaster for an iconic brand.
The MPP will keep close tabs on any new developments in the story. Until then, the MPP encourages motorcyclists and their supporters to contact Quaid Harley-Davidson, Harley- Davidson Corporate, and the City of Loma Linda to voice their condemnation of blatant discrimination.
QUICK, OPEN THE BAD JOKE LIBRARY– CHICKENS: The only animal you eat before they are born and after they are dead.
A man goes to see the Rabbi. ‘ “Rabbi, something terrible is happening and I have to talk to you about it.”
The Rabbi asked, “What’s wrong?”
The man replied, “My wife is going to poison me.”
The Rabbi, very surprised by this, asks, “How can that be?”
The man then pleads, “I’m telling you, I’m certain she’s going to poison me. What should I do?”
The Rabbi then offers, “Tell you what. Let me talk to her, I’ll see what I can find out and I’ll let you know.”
A week later the Rabbi calls the man and says, “I spoke to your wife on the phone for three hours. You want my advice? The man said, “Yes”
The Rabbi replied, “Take the poison.”

THE SADDLEMEN REPORT– Went down to Saddleman a couple weeks ago to talk to a good friend of my grandfathers named Buster. Brought my stock Dyna seat and asked him what he thought would bring the bike more to life and he recommended the step up seat.
I’ve been doing a little research and agreed with him a 100%. He had a light brown one that said would do the trick and was ready to go. But after looking at it next to my paint I decided not to go down that rode.
I wanted a clean black seat to match the frame of the ‘05 Dyna but also wanted something custom and unique. Buster showed me a few mock ups of other seats they have done for clients recently then threw out the idea of the Orange and silver stiching to tie everything in together.
Man was he right this seat came out clean and after a few minor adjustments do to my height they got it dialed in and ready to go. I’m anxious to get in on my bike and take it out to test its comfortability.
I’m currently working on a painting for Busters office over at saddleman for all his help with this project. Thanks again to buster and all the guys over at saddleman for making this happen.

This excerpt hits the nail on the head. Many times have I also camped on the side of the road with little more than a sleeping bag and a tarp.
My buddy Mike and I have been woken up by everything from storms, to cops, to truckers pulling in and out of the rest stop.
These little adventures always add to the story and sometimes are the most memorable part of any road trip. While it is ok to stop at a hotel and take a shower, many have forgotten the art of sleeping next to their bike and enjoying the open air.
It changed my life forever…makes me remember my first trip to Sturgis in 2005 with the Bikernet team.

REPORT FROM THE NMA– ‘Variable Speed Limits’ allow Police to Trap Motorists on the Fly
From Joe Cadillac, writer of the massprivatel blog
A nightmare driving scenario, is slowly making its way across the country as states everywhere begin installing ‘Variable Speed Limits’ (VSL) which allows law enforcement to change speed limits on a whim.
Imagine you are cruising down the highway, obeying the posted speed limit of 75 MPH only to find out that you’re being ticketed for driving 15 miles over the speed limit.
How can this happen you ask?
In cash-strapped America, it is now possible for the police to alter the rules mid game using VSL’s. States like Wyoming, Oregon, Georgia, Washington, Utah, New Jersey, Florida and Minnesota have already begun using them.
The U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) is paying states $1 billion to use VSL’s to create ‘aggressive congestion-relief programs’.
“In 2006 and 2007, USDOT demonstrated its commitment to helping reduce traffic congestion in major urban areas by issuing two Federal Register Notices soliciting cities to apply for Urban Partnership status under the Urban Partnership Agreement and Congestion Reduction Demonstration Programs. The selected cities with the most aggressive congestion-relief programs would receive priority consideration for available Federal discretionary funds (approximately $1 billion) across 10 programs.”
VSL’s are allegedly about relieving congestion and ‘Smarter Highways.
But how will states pay back the $1 billion?
By ticketing motorists of course.
The Georgia DOT claims VSL’s aren’t being used to create speed traps.
“Our ability to remotely change the speed limit on the corridor is not intended to create speed traps. Rather, the changing speed limits are designed to create safer travel by preventing accidents and stop-and-go conditions.”
States resist speed trap transparency…
“States are more than happy to receive their annual share of $450 million in federal cash used to run speed traps and roadblocks, but they are now actively resisting efforts to increase the transparency and accountability of the programs being funded.”
Law enforcement would never use VSL’s to ticket unsuspecting motorists’ right?
An article in the UK Sun claims, police used VSL’s on smart motorways to trap 210,538 motorists since 2013 to May 2017. UK motorists can also lose three points on their driving record for each VSL offense.
And just like the UK, the Washington State DOT claims VSL’s will be used to relieve congestion and reduce the possibility of accidents.
“Ideally, approaching traffic will slow down and pass through the problem area at a slower but more consistent speed reducing stop and go traffic. By reducing stop and go traffic we’re also reducing the probability of an accident by giving drivers more time to react to changing road conditions. This helps drivers avoid the need to brake sharply as they approach congestion.”
But are they telling the truth?
A Washington DOT document reveals that VSL’s are being used to ticket motorists…
“Think of the VSLS signs like a regular static speed limit sign. The speed limit is just that—a limit. It’s the maximum speed you should travel, however you might have to drive slower than the posted speed limit due to traffic or weather. Also, just like a static sign the speed limits are enforceable and you could be ticketed by law enforcement for exceeding the posted speed limit.“
An article in KIRO 7 warns, that the state police don’t track how many motorist have been ticketed using VSL’s.
“The state patrol does not keep statistics for infractions on the variable signs, but we did pull speed ticketing for east and westbound I-90 for mile posts between the signs for the past few years.”
The reason they’re not tracking how many motorists have been ticketed for ignoring VSL’s is simple, the public would be outraged. And the USDOT knows it.
A recent USDOT report reveals that the Feds are worried motorists will ignore VSL’s.
“Implementing a VSL system also comes with challenges, including enforcement of speeds that change, driver comprehension, and setting thresholds for speed limit changes…”
“Driver compliance or driver response is a critical factor for effectiveness of VSL systems.”
So how will the USDOT force driver’s to comply?
Under a section titled ‘Legal and Enforcement Considerations’ the USDOT wants states to change their laws.
· Review State and local statutes and agency policies to ensure that a VSL system is enforceable if a regulatory speed limit is desired.
· Begin meeting with law enforcement partners early in the process to discuss any concerns and processes for enforcing the VSL system, if enforcement is required.
· Ensure that law enforcement personnel can safely enforce speed limits with potential safe places to stop violators, if enforcement is required.
The future of American driving is indeed grim. The USDOT wants to send customized speeding warnings to each individual vehicle.
“Traditional VSL broadcasts uniform speed limit information via roadside infrastructure, and emerging connected vehicle technologies can send customized messages to each individual vehicle”.
The Feds want states to change their laws, so they can collect more money from motorists.
For years, law enforcement has known that speed limits are universally too low. (Click here & here to find out more.)
So why would states use VSL’s?
So they can grab a piece of the $1 billion of course.
Driving isn’t a privilege—it’s become a cash cow for the government.

YAMAHA Introduces New XSR700 Sport Heritage Motorcycle and XMAX Scooter–
More Models in 2018 Lineup Also Revealed
Yamaha Motor Corporation, USA, today introduced their new XSR700 Sport Heritage motorcycle and XMAX scooter, exemplifying the company’s ongoing commitment to bringing new and exciting models to market.
The new XSR700 and XMAX are just part of Yamaha’s poignant 2018 model lineup announcements, which have already included the early September introduction of the all-new Star Eluder, and introductions of the all-new Star Venture and YZ450F in June.
While more of the company’s returning motorcycles and scooters for 2018 were announced today, the addition of the new XSR700 to the iconic Sport Heritage model lineup garners due attention. Featuring a compact 689cc inline twin cylinder engine with a “Crossplane Concept” 270 degree crankshaft, a sporty chassis for nimble handling along with powerful ABS brakes, the XSR700 blends modern function and performance with styling inspiration from Yamaha’s rich heritage.
The “Faster Sons” Philosophy
Descended from the heritage of motorcycling’s past, today’s “Faster Sons” represent both the motorcycles and the riders who respect iconic Yamaha designs while continuing to push performance forward. The spirit of the “Faster Sons” philosophy is embodied by Yamaha’s Sport Heritage motorcycles, where styles of the past combine with the technology of today to create real character that does not compromise on riding ability.
2018 XSR700 Motorcycle
The new XSR700 is the latest model to take its place in the Sport Heritage lineup as a casual, retro-styled street bike. Paying tribute to the iconic Yamaha XS650, a pure masterpiece of Yamaha simplistic design that still inspires today, the XSR700 delivers the perfect mix of timeless style, modern technology and emotional riding experience.
The authentic feeling of the XSR700 is derived from several key features, including a stitched two-level seat and an old-school style round headlight and fastening stay. Exposed and painted aluminum components, retro-influenced bodywork and simple front and rear fenders also remain true to vintage character. Customization potential abounds as well, thanks in part to removable aluminum tank panels and a removable rear sub-frame.
Drawing from the “Faster Sons” design philosophy, the XSR700 delivers modern performance courtesy of the compact 2-cylinder engine with a “Crossplane Concept” 270 degree crankshaft that provides unique power characteristics with outstanding torque and a direct throttle-to-rear-wheel connection feeling. Add to that a six-speed transmission, modern suspension components tuned to provide a balance of comfort and control ideal for the street, lightweight aluminum wheels and powerful ABS brakes, and the XSR’s contemporary abilities become evident.
Both new and experienced riders will appreciate the modern LCD instrumentation, comfortably upright seating position, low 410-pound wet weight and up to 58mpg fuel economy when dicing through urban traffic or hustling down a twisty road.
The 2018 XSR700 will be available in both Matte Gray/Aluminum and Raspberry Metallic, and will arrive at Yamaha dealerships beginning in October with a MSRP of $8,499.
2018 XMAX Scooter
Powered by a 292cc single cylinder, fuel-injected engine, the all-new XMAX bristles with convenience and technology features. A Constant Variable Transmission (CVT) makes riding easy, with no need to shift gears, while a Traction Control System (TCS) helps to keep everything in line when road grip is limited. Front and rear disc brakes with ABS keep braking under control, while a Smart Key system simplifies ignition access.
The XMAX comes ready to ride with lighted under seat storage that will accommodate two full-face helmets, a lockable storage pocket with a 12V electrical charging outlet, an adjustable windscreen and handlebars, and an LED headlight and taillight.
Available in Vivid White, the 2018 XMAX will begin arriving at Yamaha dealerships in October with a MSRP of $5,599.

1957 Harley-Davidson ST165
The ST165 was a lightweight two-stroke Harley-Davidson produced from 1948 to 1966. The design was a copy of the DKW RT125, acquired at the end of World War II from the occupied German DKW plant.
With the introduction of these lightweights it was hoped they would bring younger buyers into a Harley dealership, hopefully moving up to one of the full size models at a later date. The ST165 was priced at a reasonable $445.00

FRANKIE’S DYNA REPORT— Will also contain a Lindby crash bar installation and a Love Jugs cooling system installation.
Someone dropped off a Lindby style bar at the headquarters, but I sensed something wrong. It was light as a feather and didn’t have the Lindby trademark. I reached out to the boss who said to beware. The knock-offs are made cheaply, sort of destroying the reason Per Lindby designed his tough protection system.
The bike is very close to completion.

INCREDIBLE— Daily our lives get more complicated, but I’m working on keeping life as simple and fun as possible. More reports coming next week, then I’m off to Las Vegas Bike Fest to rescue the 5-Ball Factory Racer from Joe’s restaurant.
We’ve ordered new 5-Ball racing stickers. We’ve been out for awhile.

I’m working with Hugh King on another story about his Build-Off bike. It was built by all the greats including the Ness family and Eddie Trotta, Russell Mitchell, Billy Lane and more. He’s looking to sell it and Bikernet is telling the story. Check under Bike Builds for the first three chapters.
By next weekend I might have my paint and my engine in place on my Pan project bike. I can’t wait. It’s sort of a ’64, ’69 and ’79 Pan. What the hell should I call it?
Domenic helped Frankie get his FXR back on the road by replacing the rear belt. And he had a problem with his Grip Ace system, so he’s simplifying his issues with this push-button starter. Can’t go wrong with these puppies.
Damn, and Halloween is coming right up.
Hang on for lots of content flying at Bikernet next week.
