British inventor Edward Butler coined the term ‘motorcycle’ in 1884 when he invented a 3-wheeled petrol vehicle. Here is an 1891 newspaper print of the “Petroleum Motor Tricycle in Operation.” Petroleum Motor Tricycle was eventually shortened to “motorcycle.”
