THE BIKERNET BONNEVILLE FILES: Bob Bennett is a long time Bonneville competitor, holds a number of records, is knocking on the door on a 200 mph record, and has the distinction of having his name engraved on the Viet Nam Memorial Wall as KIA even though he is quite alive. In 2013 Bob dedicated his new record to the 32 men who died in his unit.. Alpha Company.
Bob hit a peak speed 203 mph with his normally aspirated 1650cc class Sportster. The GPS Speedo’s first red light illuminates at exactly 200 mph with the digital display’s memory displaying the exact peak mph reached during the run. Bob hit 203 mph without a turbo or supercharger.
Bob writes: “Attached are a few pictures of my bike at speed week last year. The tail section has the 32 names of the men in my Company that were KIA in 1967. The bike number 3399 represents 3rd Bat 39th Inf. 9th Ind Div.“
They say adrenaline sears major events in your memory that makes them so clear you relive them over and over again. Bob returned to Viet Nam recently to retrace his path and to pay honor, by way of remembrance, to those who were with him that died.

S&S CYCLE STEALTH AIR CLEANER– Stealth air cleaner kits now CARB compliant
S&S Cycle has announced that it has been issued with an Executive Order (EO # D-355-11) by California Air Resources Board, which allows S&S Stealth air cleaners to be installed on Delphi EFI equipped 2001 and up Harley-Davidson Big Twin and Sportster models.
All S&S Stealth air cleaner kits for 2001-up EFI models now come with a special sticker and instructions for applying it to an inconspicuous location on the frame. So, if for some reason a rider does get stopped, there is proof that the S&S Stealth air cleaner is legal.
The S&S Stealth air cleaners feature an air directional stinger cone in the filter, which is said to direct air smoothly into the bore of the carburetor or EFI throttle body for reduced turbulence and increased flow. The air cleaner can be used with the stock H-D Twin Cam 88, 96 or 103 air cleaner cover, or can be used with any of several S&S designed covers. High flow (1in taller) filter kits are also available.

TRAIN ROLLS INTO 2014 STURGIS BUFFALO CHIP MUSIC FESTIVAL– The Sturgis Buffalo Chip announces that Train will unleash its feel-good hits on fans at the Buffalo Chip’s nine-day Motorcycle and Music Festival this summer. The radio-friendly trio will headline the festival Thursday, Aug. 7, 2014, capping off a day of military tributes during the Buffalo Chip’s annual Freedom Celebration. Train’s performance marks the first time fans will be able to see the GRAMMY-award-winning band perform in the Chip’s natural outdoor amphitheater during the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally.

TENNESSEE Motorcycle Helmet Law Debate — This Morning at 5am and News at 9pm. Nashville, Tenn–Tennessee law requires drivers to wear seat belts and motorcyclists have to wear helmets. But some riders believe they should have a choice when it comes to helmets.
There are at least 31 states that give motorcyclists the choice of whether or not to wear a helmet, but Tennessee is not one of them. Senator Mike Bell has been on a crusade to change that.
For eight years he’s pushed legislation to make helmets optional for experienced riders over 25 who take safety courses and agree to carry additional liability and medical insurance. Senator Bells says wearing helmets should be left to the individual.
Health experts and insurance companies say changing the helmet law will lead to more traumatic brain injuries, deaths and medical costs that will be passed along to hospitals and eventually rate payers. If the bill passes, senator Bell says Tennessee will still have one of the most restrictive helmet laws in the country.

Belvedere Company Owner Uncovers Eight “Crazy” Pepper Spray Laws in United States–
Seven States Plus D.C. Have “Bizarre Laws” Regulating Non-Lethal Self-Defense Products
CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. — In an article posted on The Belvedere Company’s web site, the company’s owner, Paul Jones, has listed seven states plus the District of Columbia with “crazy” laws pertaining to carrying and using pepper spray for self-protection.
“If you think states have bizarre laws pertaining to guns, alcohol, and drugs,” Jones writes, “just wait to see what some politicians are doing to protect you from pepper spray! Although pepper spray is, in fact, legal in all 50 states, you might have to jump through some hoops to protect yourself.”
In alphabetical order, Jones identifies Alaska, California, D.C., Massachusetts, Michigan, New York, New Jersey, and Wisconsin as the eight jurisdictions with the oddest regulations for buying, selling, or owning pepper spray.
Alaska: The only restriction is that you can’t carry it in school unless you have permission and then you must be over 21 years old. This means that only teachers or high school seniors held back several years can carry pepper spray.
California: Only a person with no felony record can carry pepper spray, and then no more than 2.5 ounces. It is only legal to use it for protection against animals, not people.
District of Columbia: Jones calls this regulation “the craziest one of all. You can carry pepper spray but you must go to your local police station and ‘register’ it.” The law does not specify what form this registration must take. Jones comments: “I don’t know how you can register something that has no serial number on it or what benefit this rule serves.”
Massachusetts: The Bay State restricts sales to firearms dealers only and your spray must be “licensed” by the police.
Michigan: You can only possess a canister containing less than 35 grams and the pepper spray can’t be more than 2% strength. (“Good thing Michigan has eliminated crime,” quips Jones, “so there is no need for self-protection.”)
New York: “These regulations are as crazy as anything I’ve ever heard,” says Jones, because in New York, you must buy your pepper spray from either a licensed gun dealer or a pharmacist. “What do gun shops and drug stores have in common?,” asks Jones: “Maybe a good lobbyist.” In addition, a customer can buy a maximum of two pepper sprays at a time. Oddly enough, Jones points out, although buying pepper spray on line or by mail order is illegal if the product is labeled for self-protection against humans, New Yorkers can buy exactly the same product on line “as long as it is labeled for protection from dogs or bears.”
New Jersey: Pepper spray is restricted to “pocket sized” only. “The power or the number of pepper sprays you carry in New Jersey don’t matter,” Jones notes, “as long as they fit in a pocket.” The law does not define what “pocket sized” means. “Coat pocket? Pants pocket? Shirt pocket? New Jersey doesn’t say.”
Wisconsin: Citizens can carry pepper spray as long as the maximum concentration is less than 10% (which is fine) but you cannot have one that holds more than 2 ounces. The crazy thing is, Mace is illegal, but Wisconsinites can carry pepper spray.”
“Isn’t it comforting,” Jones notes wryly, “to know that politicians are busy protecting you from protecting yourself?”
Jones recommends that people visit the web site of The Belvedere Company at www.tbcsafe.com, where they can purchase pepper sprays, alarms, whistles, and other devices that can disable or frighten criminals intent on assault.
The products The Belvedere Company sells are easy to use, Jones says. “You don’t have to be physically strong or fast or nimble, but you have to be willing to use it and you have to be alert and aware of your surroundings all the time.”

Just another 2012 Street Glide. We dont think so! I met up with the Garwood Custom Cycles (GCC) team at the Washington DC edition of the Ultimate Builder Custom Bike Show when they rolled in seven motorcycles to showcase their capability, creativity and innovative design.
The bike that caught my eye was the 2012 Street Glide called Brazen. And for the first time out it did excellent, it took a top five position in the MOD Harley class that saw some of the most competitive bikes in the 12 city show series.

Since 2007, magazine retail sales have lost between 40% and 50% of their volume. It’s generally agreed the causes have been changes in consumer buying habits, expanding media formats (tablets, mobile, social media, etc.), and the shaky economics of the distribution channel. However, there is not agreement on what if anything can be done to halt the decline and establish a viable magazine retail marketplace.
Baird Davis (BD): The newsstand channel is in deep “doo-doo.” It’s easy to see that an imminent collapse may not be too far in the future. Publishers , I believe, have seriously underestimated this possibility.
John Harrington (JH): We’re in broad agreement. Senior executives of both publishers and national distributors have told me a collapse is possible, perhaps within a year to 18 months. UNCLE MONKEY ON THE PRICE OF HOBBIES–My friend was down this weekend. As we waited in my garage for a young gentleman to look at Mrs. Monkey old bike he asked this and that about my bikes. I told him about my plans for the missus’s new HondaMatic, how it worked, how it would look when it was done. I talked endlessly about the Road King explaining how the parts fit together, what my hopes and dreams would be for the bike when it was finished.
We talked about Snow White and how much I was looking forward to getting her back on the road in the upcoming weeks.
“Must be nice.” It does make me stand a little taller that I’ve reach a point in my life where I can afford (barely) to have several projects on the go and expensive bikes in my stable. Not everyone is so lucky. Not everyone realizes that it is not always easy.
Bikes are a passion, an addiction and like most addicts we find a way to pay for it. I would love to head down to Daytona each year but that money can and does get spent on parts and paint.
We reuse, repurpose what we can like the RoadKing’s smashed front fender that is now the rear fender on the HondaMatic. We build old IronHeads not only because they are cool but because they are cheap to buy. We could turn our talents loose on brand new bikes and maybe one day we will but for us it is the next fix, the next bike, the next part.
I pointed out to my friend just how much he had dropped on four brand new skidoos, his luxury fifth wheel trailer and the Mega-cab diesel he bought to pull it all. So while he could afford to have the bike he wants he just hasn’t made the commitment to buying it. We all have hobbies – some just cost more than others.

As you read these words please pause and reflect on how much of Living the Good Life is robbed from you by holding on to this baggage. How many times have you beaten yourself up over something you did or did not do? What Joy have you missed because you were once told that you could not do something?
How much energy have you given to negativity, to hate, to fear? Emerson wrote a quote “for every minute you remain angry, you give up sixty seconds of peace of mind.”
I do an exercise quite often where I replace the word anger with another negative word and think of what I am missing. For instance “for every minute I give to the past I lose sixty seconds of Living in the present.”
We have a choice of how much of our precious energy we are willing to give away. Do we want to Live our Truth, do we want to Live and express Life in new and wonderful ways. Is not time to Let Go of this stifling baggage? What is done is done, we cannot change it but we can change where we are today, right now.
Today Know: Today is the day I begin to Let Go of the baggage, whatever is in that baggage no longer serves me.
I refuse to give any more of my precious time or energy to it.
I claim my Life back fully Knowing that this baggage no longer has any power over me.
Today and I am Grateful that I still have the choice to Let Go. I close my eyes and I feel a new Peace of Mind filling my Soul as I Let Go and take My Life Back. Today I Live fully in the Present each and every second.

Discovered another adrenaline packed event, the 92nd running of the Pikes Peak Hill Climb.. Billed as the “Race To The Clouds.” If you’re touring near the Colorado Springs, Colorado area the end of June you might want to mark your calendar for this event. Race Day is bright and early Sunday 6/29. The gates open at 3:00 a.m. Racing starts at 8:00 a.m.
Another fun packed week in the Harbor by the Port of Los Angeles with major progress to report on the 5-Ball Racing Teams, Raycer. We now have a hold down for the lightweight, powerful Shorai Battery. The good Dr. Willie has walked the soles off of his engineer boots, while consuming gallons of Christian crank, chased with gallons of Kangen alkaline Water while going over all of the Raycers fine details from axel to axel, providing what may be the ultimate window of opportunity for a safe shot at going straight and fast in August during the Bub 2014-AMA Land Speed Grand Championships, 8/23-28…..
The fuel lines are now 100%, we think, the fittings are now AN8 throughout. Our flow rate should meet and or exceed fuel demands at all RPMs. We’ll load and ship the Raycer to Dan Thayer to test our theory out on a dyno during tuning in April.
The Compu Fire regulator has been re-located to a more mechanic friendly location as well as providing a spot for cooler air to pass over the heat sinks fins.
Our local George The Wild Brush in Long Beach now has our 1/4 fairing in his shop mounting a Busa headlight for a street riding option, rather than the racetrack full fairing.
George is the pinstriper on the job. The engine might cool easier in traffic rollin’ out of LA while in the lane splitting mode, with the 1/4 fairing in place.
The ET Krank Vents are now routed to a mandatory, vented catch can. A breather line holder is bolted securely to the bottom edge of the battery box. A little ingenuity comes in handy when performing what many might say is next to impossible.
The aircraft approved fuel lines to the air plenum have been engineered to tuck in tight to the components at hand, while providing room to mount the fairing without a rub. Once the outside O-Ringed cover is removed, a simple set screw in the attached backing plate can be removed and the adjustment screw for throttle positioning is exposed providing the tuner easy access.
The axel adjusters now contain a first class lanyard, simple stuff that might prevent losing the pin.
Sunrises are a great way to start the day, makes sense to me. While on the East end of my bungalow the sun streams in every morning. Sunsets of any kind come in second best, especially the ones viewable from my kitchen window facing, of all directions, west.

NO HELMET motorcycle bill dies in TN Senate committee–

NASHVILLE, TN (WSMV) – A bill designed to loosen the state’s motorcycle helmet law died in the legislature Tuesday partially thanks to one man’s harrowing story.
In March 2012, Jamie Simmons was riding his motorcycle back to work from Gallatin when a car suddenly pulled out in front of him.
“The police treated it as a fatality. The EMT didn’t think I’d make it,” Simmons said.
Simmons was wheeled into the hospital with 13 broken bones, a lacerated liver, a collapsed lung and missing his top row of teeth.
He survived, and he may not have made it if he hadn’t been wearing a helmet.
“It took a shot, and I didn’t have any brain damage,” Simmons said.
State Rep. Cameron Sexton, R-Crossville, sponsored a bill that would have allowed some motorcyclists to go without helmets in Tennessee.
“The fundamental question is who has the right to decide the risk a person can impose on themselves?” Sexton said.
It’s a debate lawmakers have been fighting for years, and Sexton’s bill was the most restrictive of the no-helmet proposals ever submitted. It would have required a motorcyclist to take a safety course and increase their insurance to cover medical costs in case of an accident.
“We thought we came up with a viable plan. Unfortunately, the Senate found it wasn’t a viable plan,” Sexton said.
Sexton says he plans to research the issue even further and may submit a new helmet bill next session.

NORML WEED WORLD NEWS STUDY– Drug Dogs Most Likely To Err In Traffic Stop Scenarios
Stone Ridge, NY: Dogs trained to detect the presence of illegal drugs are most likely to provide false alerts in situations involving the search of a motor vehicle, according to the findings of a study published online in the journal Forensic Science International.
A team of researchers from the United States and Poland assessed the ability of trained drug-sniffing dogs to accurately detect the presence controlled substances – including marijuana, hashish, amphetamines, cocaine and heroin – in various environments.
Dogs were most likely to correctly identify the presence of contraband, particularly marijuana, during searches of individual rooms. If the dog had previous exposure to the room prior to the search, it was least likely to provide a false alert (83 percent correct identifications versus 10 percent false alerts).
Dogs were far less reliable in scenarios designed to mimic real-world traffic stops. In situations where dogs accessed the perimeter of a motor vehicle, the animals accurately alerted to the presence contraband only 64 percent of the time. Fifteen percent of the time dogs failed to recognize the presence of illicit drugs. Twenty-two percent of the time the dogs indicated that illegal drugs were present when they were not.
Drug dogs’ failure rates were even more pronounced in situations where the animals had access to the inside of a vehicle. In this scenario, dogs correctly responded to the presence of contraband only 58 percent of time. They provided false alerts 36 percent of time.
Previous studies have similarly documented drug dogs’ tendency to provide false alerts. In 2011, researchers at the University of California at Davis reported that the performance of drug-sniffing dogs is significantly influenced by whether or not their handlers believe illicit substances are present. That same year, a review of Australian government statistics, published in the Sydney Morning Herald, found that some 80 percent of drug dog alerts in New South Wales yielded no illicit substances.
In 2005, the United States Supreme Court ruled in Illinois v Caballes that an alert from a police dog during a traffic stop provides a constitutional basis for law enforcement to search the interior of the vehicle.

INDIAN CHIEFTAIN STYLING CUES– In the 1940s and 1950s, a stylish, fast and powerful new diesel locomotive called the Super Chief powered the legendary luxury train that ran between Los Angeles and Chicago. The locomotive featured a sculpted front end and long, sleek windows down the side that cut through the wind in dynamic fashion. It carried riders to exciting new destinations and new adventures.
The flagship of the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway, the Super Chief inspired countless thousands of onlookers to travel and see what lay beyond the horizons they could see from home.
Among those it inspired was Greg Brew, Director of Industrial Design (ID), Polaris Industries. He grew up in Arizona and saw the Super Chief and other streamliner trains cut powerfully across the desert.
Fast forward to 2012, when Brew was working with his ID team to design what would become the new Indian® Chieftain™. As he and Lead Industrial Designer Mike Song developed concepts for the Indian Chieftain fairing, Brew didn’t initially realize how many styling cues the front end of the new bagger motorcycle shared with the Super Chief. But when Brew and Song presented a set of renderings to Gary Gray, Product Director, Indian Motorcycles, Gray and his team noted the styling influence.
“It reminded us of the streamliner trains of the time, the Super Chief,” Gray said. “The freight trains of those times looked very powerful going down the track.”
Which was what he wanted for the new bagger’s fairing. “We wanted it to look powerful coming down the road, wanted lots of light so a rider can see and be seen, and wanted an aerodynamic shell,” Gray said.
Brew realized that, indeed, the trains he saw growing up had inspired him. “When Gary and those guys started talking about it feeling like a train, I almost wished that had been our original explanation, because if you look at the Super Chief, it absolutely fits.”
Brew said the ID team wanted the fairing styling to be distinctive, but they also wanted it to complement rather than overpower the bike’s other signature bodywork.
“The bike is leading with a dramatic fender with the War Bonnet on it. As soon as that fender comes around the corner, you can identify that bike as an Indian Motorcycle,” Brew said. “That fairing has got to fit with that same aesthetic.
Brew and Song worked through numerous renderings as they styled the front face of the fairing. “There’s a fairly sizable space above the headlight because to get all that technology in the fairing, you have to work with a pretty high ‘forehead.’” Brew said.
That’s not unlike the Super Chief, which also featured significant bodywork from its central set of headlights up to the sculpted top edge. On the Super Chief, that “forehead” space hosted another large, powerful headlight, which became integral to the front-end styling. The chrome trim plate above the Indian Chieftain headlight does the same thing, adding style to an expanse of bodywork.

BIKERNET GUN NUT REPORT–California: Plaintiffs to Seek En Banc Review of Ninth Circuit Decision Allowing San Francisco to Ban Self-Defense Ammunition and Mandating Locked Storage of Firearms
On March 25, a three-judge panel of the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals affirmed a November 2012 federal district court ruling that denied a request to block enforcement of two extreme San Francisco gun control ordinances. The San Francisco ordinances challenged in the Jackson v. San Francisco case require handguns to be kept under lock and key in the home at all times unless actually being carried, and ban the sale of all ?non-sporting and common hollow-point self-defense ammunition.
Because of fundamental conflicts between the courts analysis and recent Supreme Court decisions and admonishments, the plaintiffs are seeking en banc review by an en banc panel of eleven Ninth Circuit judges, and will seek Supreme Court review after that if necessary.
Funded largely by the National Rifle Association, the Jackson case was one of many coordinated civil rights cases filed in the wake of the Heller decision in 2008. The Jackson case is being litigated by the NRAs West Coast attorneys at Michel and Associates, along with former U.S. Solicitor General Paul Clement.
The Jackson decision highlights the problems with the analytical framework for considering Second Amendment challenges recently fashioned by the Ninth Circuit in the United States v. Chovan case. That subjective intermediate scrutiny framework allows political and personal bias to creep into the law making and judicial review process, and effectively creates a toothless and overly deferential review of government infringements on Second Amendment rights. Under this type of watered-down judicial standard of review, judges who are so inclined can find that virtually all restrictions on the right to keep and bear arms are constitutional simply by accepting post hoc government justifications uncritically, or by characterizing an infringement as insubstantial.
The request for en banc review or Supreme Court review will seek a standard of judicial review in Second Amendment cases that is consistent with the instructions and warnings given by the Supreme Court in the District of Columbia v. Heller case.
TheJackson case is one of two Ninth Circuit cases being litigated by the NRAs California legal team that are currently being considered for potential en banc review. The other case, Peruta v. County of San Diego, recently resulted in a tremendous decision from a three-judge panel confirming that the Second Amendment guarantees the right of law-abiding citizens to carry a firearm in public and striking down a Sheriffs policy that required applicants to establish a special need before they could get a license to carry a firearm outside the home.

CALM AND EASY—I’ve been surrounded by a strange vibe the last couple of days. Can’t quite put my finger on it.
I attended a community meeting last night and Jesse, the hard driving environmentalists spoke out about the EPA’s lack of reports about the surrounding oil refineries. He told us that they haven’t been doing their job for 16 years. Think about that for a second. Environmental groups are suing the EPA for not doing their job. Think about that. Think about all the small companies faced with enormous business crippling fines while massive oil companies skate.
We live in a region over a web of oil lines to wells and to the port. We recently had an oil leak on a residential street. The public outcry is incredible, or are they just hoping for a paycheck. I grew up sloshing around in oil. Hell, there’s oil in every intersection I pull up to. I don’t get the big deal, but suddenly the oil companies, who keep us on the road daily are the very bad guys.
Maybe there’s a full moon on the horizon. Or just maybe a redhead will rock this old guy’s world once more. With the help of Paughco I put my Spitfire girder back together. I can’t wait to ride this weekend.
