ALL-AROUND BIKERNET WEEKLY NEWS for August 31, 2017

Hey,

This is one of those days. We could go in almost any direction. The mural is flying alongside our building.

We are almost finished with Franky’s Dyna. Although he doesn’t know how to think about his ride since the factory killed the model. It’s as if he’s homeless.

“SAY A PRAYER FOR THE FOLKS IN TEXAS”— Sidehack Jerry

I’m waiting to hear from Deny and my Panhead Paint. I need to send some cam followers back to JIMS. We decided on running JIMS solids and Eric Bennett is ordering me a mid range cam for the 74-inch monster from Lienweber. I ordered new rocker arms and bases from J&P cycles. We will have all the pieces in short order and Bob Bennett is bringing this puppy to life.

Let’s hit the news and see what happens next.

THE MICHAEL LICHTER STURGIS REPORT–
Another fantastic Sturgis for the books has come and past! The Black Hills offered perfect weather for the rally’s 77th year, making the week that much better for riding and partying. If you’re receiving this email, it’s because you were kind enough to let me photograph you and give us your email address.

To view the event imagery, click on my site and you will be redirected to the Sturgis Black Hills Rally gallery on my new website that we are currently beta testing.

The link will drop you into the “Top 20” view (that actually has 60 images because of the size of the shoot.)

They are chronologically ordered so you can quickly advance through the gallery pages to get to the day you were photographed. You can also try searching for yourself (or friends) by name in the “Search” field to just see those images.

To create a new search, be sure to click “Clear Search” first. Feel free to browse the rest of the site to see bike features or other events that I’ve photographed and I am all ears if you have any comments about the site. We still have a few months of loading content before going live.

You can also use the “Lightbox” feature to save images you may be interested in referencing or sharing in the future. Just click on the “lightbulb” icon under the enlarged images.

In addition to the rally, I also had an amazingly well received exhibition at the Buffalo Chip this year called “Old Iron – Young Blood”, showcasing incredibly talented bike builders and artists all under the age of 35. Click here to see an overview of the bikes and artwork as well as the installation in the gallery.

I hope you had as great a time that I did, and that these images bring back memories of an awesome Sturgis – whether it was your first or your 40th!

Your MMA Congratulates our 2017 Harley-Davidson Raffle Bike Winner!

On a gorgeous Saturday evening at the Upper Deck in Salisbury Beach, your Massachusetts Motorcycle Association pulled one ticket out of a sold-out drum of 2500. Followed by the friendly cajoling because our winner was not present, Saturday, July 15th, 2017, would be one that Jeffrey Judd from Poukeepsie, New York, is surely going to remember!

Jeff purchased ticket #1330 because it was being drawn on his birthday. Commenting that he “had a lucky feeling.” Interestingly, this wasn’t Jeff’s first ticket purchased, either; Jeff purchased 2 sets of tickets, because he forgot that he’d already purchased one – and he’s glad he did!

It turned out to be a long day for Jeff and our MMA volunteers – Jeff was almost 2 hours late getting to High Octane Harley-Davidson in Billerica, MA due to a large backup caused by an accident on the Mass Pike. But after a long frustrating trip, Jeff’s happy grin made the long trip home a lot shorter!

Each year, your Massachusetts Motorcycle Association raffles off a brand-new motorcycle for one lucky winner. The proceeds from this raffle benefit all riders by supplementing your MMA’s operations including “LOOK! For Motorcycles” signs, bumper stickers, educational materials, mailings, etc. Your MMA is a 100% volunteer organization committed to promoting and protecting motorcycling and motorcyclists in the Commonwealth through a dedicated mission of Legislation, Safety, and Education.

BIKERNET BAD JOKE LIBRARY LABOR DAY CELEBRITY APPEARANCE–

WHY WE MISS RODNEY DANGERFIELD:
One year they wanted to make me a poster boy — for birth control.

My uncle’s dying wish was to have me sitting in his lap; he was in the electric chair.

I’m so ugly, I once worked in a pet shop, and people kept asking how big I’d get.

I went to see my doctor. “Doctor, every morning when I get up and I look in the mirror I feel like throwing up. What’s wrong with me?”

He said: “Nothing, your eyesight is perfect.”

I went to the doctor because I’d swallowed a bottle of sleeping pills. My doctor told me to have a few drinks and get some rest.

GUN NUT REPORT–
California: In Response to NRA/CRPA Demands, Los Angeles Repeals Ordinances Prohibiting Sale of “Ultracompact” Firearms and Possession of Standard Capacity Magazines

In response to pre-litigation demands from the NRA and CRPA, the Los Angeles City Council has voted to repeal a city ordinance prohibiting the sale or transfer of “ultracompact firearms” in Los Angeles. The city ordinance defined “ultracompact firearms” as handguns with “an overall length of six and three quarter inches (6.75”) or less or an overall height of four and one half inches (4.5”) or less, as measured with the magazine detached.”

The repeal of the ordinance was a direct result of NRA and CRPA attorneys threatening legal action against the City.

Gun owners in California are already subject to the strictest gun-control laws in the country, including a statewide restriction on the sale of handguns that are not listed on DOJ’s “Roster of Handguns Certified for Sale.” By banning the sale of certain handguns labeled “ultracompact” under the ordinance, the City prohibited the sale or transfer of certain handguns that are listed on DOJ’s roster—handguns that have been tested and are specifically approved for sale in California. Because the ordinance conflicted with state law in this respect, the ordinance is “preempted” by the state law and invalid.

On September 20, 2016,NRA and CRPA attorneys submitted a pre-litigation demand letter to the City, pointing out that the ordinance was preempted because it conflicted with the state law regulating what handguns can be sold, and was therefore invalid. The City stalled the repeal, but NRA and CRPA attorneys submitted repeated public record requests, and relentlessly pushed the City attorney’s office until the City finally repealed the ordinance.

Significantly, this isn’t the only recent NRA/CRPA victory in Los Angeles worth celebrating. In 2015, the City adopted an ordinance prohibiting the possession of magazines capable of holding more than 10 rounds. The NRA and CRPA filed a lawsuit challenging the restriction. That lawsuit, titled Bosenko v. City of Los Angeles, included 30 duly elected California Sheriffs, two law enforcement organizations, CRPA, and a number of individual gun owners as plaintiffs.

The following year, both Proposition 63 and Senate Bill 1446 were enacted, making it a violation of state law to possess these standard capacity magazines. As a result, the City’s ordinance was duplicative of and preempted by the state laws. In exchange for dismissal of the Bosenko lawsuit the City agreed to amend their ordinance to include a “sunset” provision so the ordinance would expire and be invalid and unenforceable after July 1, 2017, the date which the new state laws were set to take effect. The city ordinance has now expired.

Both Proposition 63 and Senate Bill 1446, however, suffered a major defeat in federal court after District Court Judge Roger T. Benitez issued a preliminary injunction in the NRA and CRPA supported case of Duncan v. Becerra. That injunction prohibits California from enforcing the state law banning the possession of standard capacity magazines that can hold over 10 rounds. Now that the state law has been enjoined, and because the Los Angeles ordinance is no longer in effect as of July 1, there is no law prohibiting the possession of standard capacity magazines in the City of Los Angeles.

This is welcome news for many California gun owners, including those who do not reside in Los Angeles. Thousands of law-abiding gun owners routinely travel through city limits to reach popular ranges such as the Angeles Shooting Range and other destinations that require traveling through city limits with firearms and the magazines that would have been prohibited.

Please continue to check your inbox and the California Stand and Fight webpage for updates on issues impacting your Second Amendment rights and hunting heritage in California.

HOT (September) NIGHTS EVEN HOTTER
AS NASCAR NATIONAL POINTS ADD UP
IN WHELEN ALL-AMERICAN SERIES

Irwindale Speedway: Saturday Sept 2

Billed as a (fun) “NIGHT of DESTRUCTION” on the Irwindale Speedway oval, there’s an even bigger (and somewhat more serious) piece of business that’s on the card and set to early in the evening this Saturday night …

A critical late-seaon race counting toward a coveted NASCAR national championship in the Whelen All-American Series.

The NASCAR 2017 standings page* on the Whelen website lists the top 500 drivers in the country who are racing for this championship, and Irwindale’s own LKQ Pick Your Part Late Model division is currently supplying five names that are listed in the top 50, with Irwindale points leader Trevor Huddleston shown holding firm in second place only one scant point (671 to 670) behind two-time All-American Champion Lee Pulliam from North Carolina.

Huddleston’s 30 starts and 20 wins so far this season at three Southwest tracks (Irwindale, Kern County, and Tucson) have put him solidly in the national numbers. In 2016, the Irwindale track champion finished in sixth place in the national standings only 51 points down on first place.

Next in line in the Whelen “Fabulous 500 list: Dylan Garner from Yorba Linda is ranked eleventh, Ryan Vargas from La Mirada is ranked sixteenth, Lawless Allen from Sherman Oaks is ranked twenty-ninth, and Nick Joanides from Woodland Hills is ranked thirty-seventh on the 2017 championship roll call.

As it turns out the above five are listed in (almost) precisely that same order (but much closer together) for Irwindale’s own LKQ Pick Your Part Late Model Championship.

This will be the 18th race in the 22-race champion for Irwindale’s premier Late Model Division. With 11 outright wins and in the first seventeen races, Huddleston comes into the single Late Model race for Saturday night with a 66-point lead (824-756) lead over his teammate Dylan Garner.

Vargas and Joanides are only a few clicks apart in third and fourth at 688 and 680 respectively, with Lawless Allen in fifth and keeping in touch at 642. Jones shows up in seventh place and is the top rookie in the Irwindale Late Model standings.

The Robertson Solar South West Tour Trucks are on the card for their fifth event at Irwindale in the 2017 season. #78 Ronnie Davis will lead the Trucks in leading the points 449 to 390 over #8 Mike Kelperis, #7 Derek Robertson is in third at 351, #5 Steve Reeves with 336, and rookie driver #97 Gary Howard with 307 rounding out the top five in the spec (all the same technically) truck division.

Of course true to the name of the night … there’s very sure to be “DESTRUCTION” aplenty on Saturday night with Seidner’s Collision Center’s Enduro, Figure 8, and Skid Plate events all careening, crashing, and colliding all over the Irwindale infield over the course of the evening.

Gates open on what will be an extremely popular night of events at 4PM and Irwindale and fans are urged to secure their family’s tickets in advance for this one on-line:

November 13, 2003 Part 3

I’m sorry, but I happen to believe that most cops are assholes. Either they were cursed with small penises, got picked on as a child, or grew up to marry a wife who slaps the livin’ shit out of him on a regular basis! So, to put themselves one up on the rest of society, they become a cop, a shaking-in-his boots Barney Fife type, who can lord it over people because now, he’s got the hammer, namely, a badge and a gun!

Makes no difference to me, you can dress any asshole in county browns or trooper blues, add a bullet-proof vest, and underneath it all, you’ve still got one bona-fide asshole with a chip on his shoulder, just waiting for you to “make his day!” I think all cops should undergo rigorous and thorough psychological testing, just to determine if they’re qualified mentally, and have the skill-set necessary for dealing with the general public, not to mention bikers.

I’m 18 years former Navy, the last 14 as a Navy S.E.A.L., (no bullshit, just fact) ’til an elderly woman driving a Cadillac SST ran a red light in Lansing, Michigan, at the corner of West Saginaw and Canal Roads, on July 23rd of 2001, totaling my beautiful Harley 2000 FXD Dyna Super Glide, and damn near totaling me.

Ending my career in the military, and my ability to ride. Since I can no longer ride, and now reside in Bay City, I have lost touch with many of my old friends from the Lansing area. I’m now 100% disabled, but somebody has done me a grave injustice, and I need to talk to someone who can speak to this young man like a dutch uncle.

I’m not going to go into details here, but bikers will always be welcome at my home. I need to talk to someone who knows how take care of business, and he will be duly compensated. I am not a cop, nor am I affiliated with any police or law enforcement agency.

I simply need some help, and talking to the right people would go along way towards righting the injustice I have suffered. Please call me at 989-316-2330.

ALBEMARLE to pilot use of extended stop arms on school buses–

Only 10 Albemarle County school buses have been outfitted with the new stop sign extensions, which reach out six feet into the other side of the road, compared with the approximate foot and a half length of current bus stop signs.

The Albemarle County school division soon will begin a pilot program that will feature extended stop arms on 10 of its buses in an attempt to prevent motorists from illegally passing stopped buses.

This proactive approach comes after the division’s past attempts to install cameras on buses’ stop sign extensions to catch those who violate the law.

Albemarle is one of two Virginia school divisions participating in the extended stop arm pilot program. The other is Fairfax County, said Jim Foley, director of the Albemarle division’s transportation department.

Only 10 buses have been outfitted with the new stop sign extensions, which reach out six feet into the other side of the road, compared with the approximate foot and a half length of current bus stop signs. The extended length aims to prevent any motorists traveling in the opposite direction from passing the stopped bus without hitting the sign.

The extended stop arms will go into use in late September. The division will collect data for the first month of school without the extensions and then compare that with data from when they’re active.

Similar efforts have been made in other states, including North Carolina, to prevent motorists from passing.

The buses with the modifications will be used primarily along Earlysville and Georgetown roads, where the school division is seeing a large number of cases of drivers passing stopped buses.

“We need to do what we can do to protect our students,” School Board Chairwoman Kate Acuff said. “Fortunately, we haven’t had anyone hit, but we’ve had some close calls and many other jurisdictions have had unfortunate accidents, so I’m hoping that this will be a step in the right direction.”

The division had tried in the past to install cameras on its bus stop signs that would catch vehicles passing and issue some sort of penalty after the fact.

“There was this concern a couple years ago that there were a lot of cars passing stopped school buses, and just very dangerous,” said Tim Shea, legislative and public affairs officer for the school division. “The idea came up to put the cameras on buses, and so it was a matter of having that approved by the state legislature.”

–BY MICHAEL BRAGG
www.dailyprogress.com

Since I live in the mountains where we do not have the extended arms (basically, Boulder County is too cheap to put them on the buses), I rarely see the rest of the states’ buses. As far as I can tell, CO does not have them. BUT!!!!

Since I take my grandkids to the school bus everyday I see idiots speeding past kids at the stops on a regular basis.I’d be all for a public execution of ANYONE passing a bus with the stop arm out. In fact, I’d volunteer to do the executing.

BIKERNET BAD JOKE LIBRARY OPENS GUN NUT WING–
I GOT MY CONCEALED CARRY PERMIT YESTERDAY MORNING

In the afternoon, I went over to the local Bass Pro Shop to get a 9mm handgun for home/personal protection. When I was ready to pay for the pistol and ammo, the cashier said, “Strip down, facing me.”

Making a mental note to complain to the NRA about the gun control wackos running amok, I did just as she had instructed.

When the hysterical shrieking and alarms finally subsided, I found out she was referring to how I should place my credit card in the card reader!

As a senior citizen, I do not get flustered often, but this time it took me a while to get my pants back on.

I’ve been asked to shop elsewhere in the future.

They need to make their instructions to seniors a little more clear. I still don’t think I looked that bad! Just need to wear underwear more often.

Barnett Clutches & Cables for ’14 – ‘17 Indians

Ventura, California based Barnett Clutches & Cables has introduced new clutch cables for the ’14 – ‘17 Indian Chief, Chieftain, Roadmaster and Scout.

These cables feature their High Efficiency inner wire, which Barnett was the first to introduce to the motorcycle industry. The “HE” wire is nylon coated and lubed with a super slick silicone lube and, combined with the Teflon inner lining, provides longer life, ultra-smooth cable action and reduced lever effort.
Available in stock and custom lengths, on the outside all fittings are chrome plated where applicable and three casing types are available: Traditional Black Vinyl, Classic Stainless Braid with clear coat and Platinum Series bright silver plated braid with clear coat; as with all their cables, Barnett say their clear coat is guaranteed not to discolor from sun exposure.

ROYAL RIDING SALUTES VETERANS CHARITY RIDE–
Gel Seat Experts Help Vets Ride Farther During Sturgis Rally

Royal Riding is honored to have been able to assist the Veterans Charity Ride during the Sturgis Rally this year. A group of 20 heroes from all branches of the service mounted up on Indian Motorcycles and six Champion Sidecars rigs to ride from Los Angeles to the 77th Sturgis Rally, culminating with a stop at the Sturgis Motorcycle Museum and Hall Of Fame.

“ROR Brands is on a mission to revitalize the industry while making a positive impact on the powersports community as a whole,” explains ROR president Rod Derifield. “We wanted to help Dave Frey and his quest to change lives and save lives of wounded, injured and amputee veterans through the use of motorcycle therapy.” Derifield not only donated a percentage of all Royal Riding gel seat pad sales in the months leading up to August, he matched it to be able to present VCR’s founder Dave Frey with a check during the Rally.

“We spend nine days riding on America’s most beautiful backroads and highways, getting to know each other and helping each other with Motorcycle Therapy and Veteran-to-Veteran discussions,” says Frey. “The shared experiences of serving brings them together to help each other heal. We also show the Veterans just how much their service means to America, by stopping in small towns along the way to meet the grateful people of our nation who want to welcome and celebrate these brave men and women.”

From eight riders in 2015, to 20 riders in 2016 and 2017, this simple concept, born out of a cross-country ride and a big purpose to help veterans, is now a nationally recognized 501c program. “We are honored to be able to salute these heroes,” adds Derifield. “Motorcycle Therapy is the perfect platform for Royal Riding’s #RideFarther philosophy. “

In addition to donating some cash, Derifield was able to hook up U.S. Army Corporal (ret) Josh Stein with a custom Royal Riding gel seat pad for the ride home. A combat engineer, he was deployed to Iraq where he was critically wounded on Easter Sunday, 2006.

“This is one of those rides you don’t even believe exists,” says Stein, a double amputee. “It doesn’t even seem real. You get a bunch of vets together and you’re gonna go to Sturgis? Are you serious? Getting to spend this whole time with other veterans, like-minded people, is absolutely great.” He was pretty stoked about the seat pad to make the ride back much more comfortable!

“Royal Riding’s exclusive viscoelastic gel inserts and countour-cushioning foam in our Cool-Tush™ pads absorb vibration and eliminate shock without bottoming out,” says head product designer Lars Roulund. “This is critical in Josh’s case. His gel-integrated pad will make it possible to Ride Farther in less pain.”

If you are looking to Ride Farther and missed the presentation of the Royal Riding pads during the Sturgis Rally, you can still preview them here, along with the RodeMaster™ gel-integrated seats by Royal Riding that made their world-premiere at the Sturgis Motorcycle Museum and Hall of Fame:

THE UNCLE ON THE MISSING DYNA LINE–
“Where’s Dyna?” The words have been echoing across the land since Harley- Davidson announced their 2018 line up. The Dyna is gone. Its more popular nameplates are finding their way onto Softail models.

The Dyna’s rubber mounted drive train in a light weight frame offered a smooth ride in a nimble frame helped it gain a cult like following as the performance Harley and drew a the attention of American motorcycle clubs as a very quick and agile bike that could get you out of trouble just as effortlessly as it could roll on the hundreds of miles between runs.

Introduced to the public in 1991 the Dyna was a follow up to the hugely popular FXR that itself was introduced in the 1982 model line up. With iconic nameplates like the Lowrider and Wide Glide the Dyna was a nod to Harley-Davidson’s history of swing arm frames with dual coil shocks on the back.

The disappearance raises a few questions. The biggest question is if the Dyna line was to completely disappear why isn’t the new Softail rubber mount? That means that there has to be a rubber mounted cruiser in the near future. I wouldn’t be surprised to see the return of the FXR nameplate in the very near future.

The departure of the V-rod this year – yeah no one really noticed either – leaves a gaping hole for a performance line of bikes in the line up. I expect the new FXR to be a real tire burner.

If there is a return of the FXR why did they transfer the Dyna nameplates to the Softail line? It will create an ugly asterisks in the history books of the Fat Bob being a rubber mounted, twin coil shock swing arm bike except 2018-20XX when it was a rigid mount Softail.

But really why isn’t the softail rubber mounted? In a time when Harley-Davidson has to tighten their belt regarding production it seems counterproductive to commit the time, resources and factory floor space to build a counter balanced Gator motor (still nothing huh?).

Harley spent decades running solid mounted Knuckles, Pans, and Shovels as the sole motor across all of the big twin lines. Would it have been that big of a stretch to have all the 2018 big twins rubber mount? The twin shock setup of the old softail frame hindered that but the all new (cough, metric, cough, cough) style frame moved to a mono shock located under the seat would have allowed the swing arm and drive train move as unit without binding.

As I wrote this spring Harley is planning on launching 100 new motorcycles in the next ten years – 6 new model Sportsters, M8ing the Softail and Dynas for 12 more, CVOs counting as 30 models left us with 50 unknown models Harley is planning.

The disappearance of Dyna line with the absorption of popular name plates to the Softail line really fiddles with those numbers. The likelihood of a scrambler or sport bike seems that much closer. In the meantime we are left scratching our heads wonder what Harley is doing.

-bad Uncle Monkey

Rubbermounting a Softail is extremely difficult. Will Phillips designed the Rubbertail two decades ago. In some ways this new frame is similar to Will’s with the monoshock configuration.

I hope the new Softail has a better turning radius and I like the lighter platform. I agree with the Uncle. A new FXR would be the shit! The factory could implement all of their touring improvements into the new FXR platform with the M-8 and rock the Sons of Anarchy crew once more.

TOP 1 ACK ATTACK IS STILL THE WORLD’S FASTEST MOTORCYCLE

Assault On 400 mph At The Top Of The World Landspeed Trial… To Be Continued

From the beginning, the Top of the World Landspeed Trial was a pioneering achievement and a logistical challenge of epic proportions. Chief Engineer Mike Akatiff and the world’s fastest motorcyclist Rocky Robinson took the TOP 1 ACK ATTACK to the rarified air of Salar De Uyuni salt flats high in the Bolivian Andes with the express goal of exceeding 400 mph and breaking the team’s own LSR mark of 376.363 mph set in 2010.

“No wind, perfect salt… No reason it wouldn’t go over 400 mph,” said Akatiff when they finally were able to unload the 20-foot, twin-engined streamliner. No reason except for Bolivian salt gremlins.

On August 5th at 1 a.m. — three weeks later than scheduled, the trailer containing the ACK ATTACK finally arrived. “Our container arrived 3 days into the Top Of The World Land Speed Trial’s very limited window so we were only able to run 2 days and simply didn’t have enough time to sort out our complex machine,” added Rocky Robinson. “We didn’t achieve our goal, but still have a lot to be thankful about.” While they didn’t go 400 mph, Robinson says they did go faster than their own existing Land Speed Record.

“Our best pass we ran 378 mph before blowing off the turbo manifold a half mile before the lights,” he said. “I coasted dead stick through the lights at 338 mph. Another pass we shredded a rear tire and then had another manifold blow out. I even overshot the pits one time by a 1/4 mile and stopped in the middle of the rough, unprepared salt.” There was also the run where the outrigger wheels failed to engage and the ACK ATTACK tipped over as Robinson coasted into the pits.

“We went 5,000 miles to one of more remote places on the planet in an attempt to raise the bar on our own record,” said Top 1 President Joe Ryan. “Unfortunately, time and logistical challenges prevented us from attaining our goal of surpassing the magical 400mph (643 kph) barrier on the last try, but we still have the record and TOP1 will forever be remembered for having the guts to make the commitment to bring attention to perhaps the next major venue for land speed racing.”

At nearly 12,000 feet (3,656 meters) above sea level, the Salar de Uyuni offers prefect salt conditions, no wind and miles of run-off room that LSR teams in Bonneville can only dream about. And several records were set at the Top Of The World Landspeed Trial, including Al Lamb riding his turbocharged Honda CBR 1000 to 265.8 mph and Nick Genet piloting a naturally aspirated Aprilia RSV4 with the fairing removed to a 192.8 mph record.

“Thank you to our general and leader Mike Akatiff,” said TOP 1 President, Joe Ryan. “You are my mentor and inspiration. I cannot be more proud of the entire team. We didn’t get our record but I feel very strongly we have a great story to share with the world!”

The record set by TOP 1 ACK ATTACK in 2010 still stands… for now. To be the best, you have to beat the best and Mike Akatiff’s ACK ATTACK is still the best with a motorcycle land-speed record of 376.363 mph. “This is historic,” said Akatiff. “Coming to Boliva is something I’ll never forget!”

Florida Highway Patrol leader quits in ticket-quota review TALLAHASSEE—
The second-highest ranking official in the Florida Highway Patrol has retired amid an ongoing review about ticket-writing quotas for troopers.

Lt. Col. Michael Thomas resigned Monday after it was discovered he sent an email in late May that encouraged troopers to write two tickets an hour.

In his letter announcing his early retirement, he called the email a “grave error” and said he was taking responsibility for his actions. Top state officials insist quotas are not allowed.

“This error has negatively impacted the patrol’s image, which was never the intent, but I feel it is in the best interest of the patrol that I retire,” wrote Thomas, who earned $131,000 a year in his job as deputy director.

Col. Gene Spaulding, the highway patrol director, said that while the email was sent with the goal of “providing enhanced public safety” it was still “inappropriate to request a specific number of citations from our members.”

The Florida Highway Patrol is responsible for monitoring state highways, including Florida’s Turnpike and interstates 10, 95 and 75 that link the state to the rest of the country.

Thomas had been with the FHP for 30 years. His last day on the job will be Sept. 1.
His resignation was the second at the FHP this month related to traffic tickets.

Maj. Mark Welch of Tallahassee’s Troop H resigned after he told troopers they weren’t writing enough tickets.

He had told troopers under his command via email that “the patrol wants to see two citations each hour,” adding that it’s not a quota.

It doesn’t appear the ousting of the two officials will affect Central Florida. Thomas helped run operations throughout the state, and Welch headed Troop H, which includes eight counties in the Panhandle. When asked about quotas in Central Florida, Sgt. Kim Montes, a spokeswoman for the highway patrol in the region, referred questions to officials in Tallahassee.

Welch resigned hours after Attorney General Pam Bondi called his actions “reckless” and “stupid” during a public meeting with top officials in the FHP and the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles.

Thomas pointed out in his letter that the FHP does not get money from any tickets that it writes. He also contended that no trooper has been disciplined or threatened because of how many tickets are written. Still, he said in his personal opinion that it was “detrimental” to call goals a “quota.”

Data provided by the department show that the number of tickets written by troopers has been falling the past three years. Troopers wrote nearly 935,000 tickets in 2014, but that dropped to 749,000 in 2016. During the same time the Florida Highway Patrol has struggled to fill all of its trooper positions.

BAD COP FILES–
Sheriff’s detective pulls gun on unarmed motorcyclist stopped at red light, video shows

Alex Randall was waiting at a red light on his motorcyle Aug. 16 when a detective with the King County Sheriff’s office in Washington state pointed a gun at him, a newly-surfaced video shows.

Now that detective has been placed on administrative leave, and the incident is being investigated, Sheriff John Urquhart wrote in a Tuesday Facebook post.

“I have ordered the detective be placed on administrative leave as of Tuesday morning pending a full investigation of the facts,” he wrote. “In every encounter I expect my deputies to treat others with respect.”

Randall says multiple times throughout the video that he is having trouble hearing the detective, asking if he can turn his motorcycle off or move it out of the roadway.

Randall also apologizes, saying he is “a little panicked” because there is a gun pointed at him.

“Yeah, you’re right, because I’m the police,” the deputy responds. “That’s right. When you’re driving and you’re going to place people at risk at 100 mph-plus on the god-dang roadway.”

The deputy put the gun away after looking at Randall’s ID, telling the driver he could be arrested for reckless driving.

At the end of the video, Randall writes that the deputy’s claim he was speeding at 100 miles per hour was “a fabrication and an exaggeration.”

Urquhart wrote on Facebook that the detective’s actions are not standard practice.

“Our manual requires that firearms not be drawn and pointed unless the deputy believes their use may be required,” he wrote. “Generally that means the deputy believes the safety of him or herself is in jeopardy, or a member of the public.

“Drawing your weapon on someone when investigating a misdemeanor traffic offense is not routine.”
