ALMOST HALLOWEEN SUNDAY POST for October 28, 2018

Hey,

It’s funny. If a friend comes over and wants to paint the exterior of your building, run. The prep is kicking my ass, but it’s all good. When it’s done it will look killer.

Let’s get to the news, so I can get back to work.

Adelaide Harley-Davidson Bike Works Makes Battle Of The Kings Final Three–(SYDNEY, AUSTRALIA) 25 October 2018: Harley-Davidson Australia/New Zealand is pleased to announce that the South Australian dealership Adelaide Harley-Davidson Bike Works has been named as one of the three grand finalists for the 2018 Global Battle of the Kings Competition.

Joining Adelaide Harley-Davidson Bike Works at ECIMA in Milan, Italy, are the two other regional winners Harley-Davidson Bangkok, Thailand and Harley-Davidson Bologna, Italy.

The 2018 World Custom King will be announced in November with the winner taking home the grand title of the 2018 Custom King. Adelaide Harley-Davidson Bike Works Dealer Principal, Blair Freeth shared the inspiration behind their build, “With Harley-Davidson having covered various forms of motorsport through history, we chose the racing theme as a tribute to not only the very successful 1990s racing series in Australia called the Roaring Sporties but the iconic sound of the V twin engine on the local track.” Blair continued, “We certainly are very lucky to have a talented team on deck who made our bike come alive, and the customer reaction to the bike has been amazing. The bike was customized to revive the local racing scene and give our clients a reason to get back to the track on a Sunday.”

Over 300 Harley-Davidson dealers entered worldwide, with more than 10,000 genuine parts and accessories; making the Battle of the Kings is the ultimate customization competition. Keith Waddell, Harley-Davidson ANZ Marketing Manager commented, “Customisation is at the core of who we are and the Battle of The Kings competition really showcases the custom expertise that exists in every dealership around the world. We had some awesome custom builds across Australia and New Zealand it is amazing to have an ANZ dealership in the grand final for 2018!

The build from Adelaide Harley-Davidson Bike Works really captures our racing heritage with some cool contemporary style and we are all rooting for Blair and the team as they go head to head for the Global Crown.”

R.I.P. Chuc Coulter Passes Away

It is with great sadness that the Motorcycle Riders Foundation (MRF) acknowledges the passing of Chuc Coulter on October 22 at his home in Boise, Idaho. His loving wife Kim was at his side.

Chuc was actively involved with motorcycle rights for over thirty-five years and was a true visionary and pioneer of motorcycle rights and rider safety. It was through his career as an attorney in Boise, Idaho, that Chuc first became interested in defending motorcyclists’ rights. He was a co-founder of the Idaho Coalition for Motorcycle Safety (ICMS), and it was through his advocacy that the motorcyclists’ rights organizations in Idaho defeated a mandatory helmet bill in 1991.

The following year, a group of law enforcement members, motorcycle dealers and concerned motorcycle riders—with Chuc serving as the group’s chairman—urged the Idaho Office of Highway Safety to move forward with education as an integral part of the safety program, and two years later Idaho took action on his efforts and adopted a statewide motorcycle safety and rider education program; to ensure the program’s autonomy, Chuc spearheaded the creation of a dedicated fund outside of the state’s general fund.

Chuc served on the Idaho STAR (Skills Training Advantage for Riders) Motorcycle education program from its inception in 1996 until January 2012.

He joined the board of directors of the MRF in 1995 and served as State Motorcycle Rights Organization (SMRO) Representative alongside longtime motorcyclists’ rights champion Buck Kittredge; then as the liaison to the National Association of State Motorcycle Safety Administrators (SMSA). He would go on to serve as the MRF’s vice-president when Buck Kittredge became president, during this time the ‘Chuc & Buck’ show was the lead off on Thursday nights of Meeting of the Minds.

Upon Buck’s passing he served as the organization’s interim president, after which he was elected to the position of MRF treasurer. He incorporated the Motorcycle Rights Foundation Awareness & Education (MRFA&E) as a 501 © (3) non-profit and served as the organization’s secretary as well as serving as treasurer of the MRF Political Action Committee (MRFPAC).

Until January 2012 he served on the Board of Directors of ICMS and as its legislative relations officer. Through the years of his tenure he developed a working relationship with Idaho governors Andrus, Batt, Kempthorne, Risch, and Otter and with both the congressional delegations and state legislators.

Chuc has profoundly influenced generations of “freedom fighters” and his dedication will be sorely missed.

NMA ACTION UPDATE–Are Drivers losing the War on Cars?

Even though drivers constitute what should be the largest voting block in the country, you would never know it by apathetic motorists who drive blissfully unaware until they are confronted with the reality of the war on cars—which is essentially an effort to get people out of their cars for good through regulations that impede traffic flow, policing for profit and taxation through tolls.

For example, despite our continuing efforts to organize resistance:

· Why haven’t drivers formed a protest group in New York City against Vision Zero and the fact that elected officials are trying to turn the entire city into one giant speed trap? (The NMA is working to form a group now—contact us at nma@motorists.org).

· Where are the Chicago area drivers (besides in court) forming a coalition to rid their cities, towns and villages of the ever present red-light cameras that seem to dot nearly every intersection?

· In North Texas, how many more toll roads can drivers really afford to pay tolls for on a daily basis?

The list could go on and on…

Make no mistake, there is a war on cars out there and do motorists even notice (besides NMA members of course)?

Anti-motorists groups are making their voices heard loud and clear during city council meetings, state or regional commission meetings, at the state legislature, and by writing online comments and editorials. Make no mistake, the bicycle lobby is not complacent. Neither is the automated camera lobby. Nor is the “speed kills” lobby.

Over 80 percent of all Americans over the age of 18 hold a driver’s license. If the traffic problem affects them personally, motorists can often exhibit their frustration through aggressive driving behaviors but it would be constructive if that aggressive energy were to be channeled into organizing with other drivers like themselves who are as “Mad as hell and don’t want to take it anymore.”

One of the biggest ways one can make a difference in your own community is to keep tabs on what your city council is doing with regards to street restrictions including creating road space for largely unused bike lanes, Complete Street projects or Vision Zero initiatives.

If you don’t like what your public officials are doing, then elect others, stand together and urge your representatives to listen to what you have to say.

A recent example–

The California community advocacy group Keep Pasadena Moving formed in March as a local group working on common-sense solutions to transportation safety issues. Now with 500 supporters, the group came together to keep Orange Grove Boulevard (a major thoroughfare) off a road diet.

The city had been planning this road diet since 2012 but recently, due to the gas tax increase, the city finally had the money and scheduled this Complete Streets Project. The road restriction plan was to convert a 1.8 mile stretch from a current four-lane street to a two lane, with a center lane for turning and the other lane used for bicycles (and eventually scooters).

Residents in the area were concerned that an artificially limited Orange Grove Boulevard would heavily impact the traffic patterns on adjacent neighborhood streets.

Earlier this month, the city council decided to shelve the plan. The city manager made the recommendation due to the perception that the community would not be able to find a compromise and that there was a lack of funding for any option other than the road diet. Frank Duerr of Keep Pasadena Moving lauded the council for listening to residents’ concerns.

The issue of road diets is not over for Pasadena since the Complete Streets philosophy is part of the city’s 2015 general plan. The Complete Streets idea comes from the nonprofit Smart Growth America’s National Complete Streets Coalition which promotes a transportation and design approach that requires streets to be planned for road users of all ages and abilities regardless of their mode of transportation. In October, 2017, over 1,140 agencies at the local, regional and state levels across the United States have adopted Complete Street policies. Last year, the Coalition became a partner in the Vision Zero network.

An emerging example of someone getting involved on more of a micro level—a New England member recently contacted the National Office with a question on how to solve an issue within his cul de sac.

Parents and their small children had appropriated the street for a hard-top playground. This member explained that recently it took him a number of minutes before he was able to enter his driveway because 20 adults and their children along with many toys needed to be moved out of the way before he could get there. The parents were angry because he dared use the only drivable entry to his property.

Also, these parents are organized and have already rallied city hall for a Kids Playing Here sign (which is not an official traffic sign) and have asked the city council to lower the speed limit to 10 mph. The city mayor has ignored our member’s personal entreaties to him for clear, safe (for all) ingress to and egress from his property so legal remedies may be the next consideration.

If you don’t have time to do any other advocacy work this year, the one thing that you can do is VOTE on November 6th and every time there is a local, state or national election. Beforehand, educate yourself about the candidates and their stances on the motorists’ issues that matter to you most.

In the meantime, we recommend that in addition to voting, begin learning more about motorists’ rights by subscribing to our newest service, Driving News Daily (DND) a Monday-Friday email of the latest news from around the country and world. Encourage your friends to subscribe to DND too as well as this weekly E-newsletter. And if you have not joined the National Motorists Association yet, then do so TODAY!

This past week, the National Office also started a new Facebook Page called the War on Cars that will feature stories and eventually a new NMA blog of the same name coming soon to the NMA Website. Check out the Facebook Page HERE.

Study our issues pages to use for talking points for or against issues. Read your state’s news and the NMA blog.

Write letters/emails or make calls to elected officials, unelected public administrators and the media. Make online comments wherever you can. Apply pressure on motorist rights causes that are important to you.

Never too late to begin working as a motorist rights’ advocate until it is…let’s don’t lose this war on cars!

FLORIDA VOTING NEWS–This midterm ballot initiative could unlock 1.5 million Florida votes in 2020

Should people with felony convictions in their past be able to vote?

In most of the country, many of them can. But Florida has one of the most uncompromising systems in the country when it comes to voter restoration: It is one of only three states with a lifetime voting ban for all people with felony convictions.

That’s the issue Florida voters will see on the ballot this November.

Amendment 4 would automatically restore voting rights for people with felony convictions upon completion of their sentences, including prison, parole and probation. Excluded would be those convicted of murder or a felony sexual offense.

The change to the state constitution would impact an estimated 1.5 million Floridians, according to The Sentencing Project and the Brennan Center for Justice.

That’s a lot of people — especially in a state that is often seen as a political petri dish, and one that can swing presidential elections.
One of the people working to restore those voting rights, including his own, is Angel Sanchez.

He’s a former gang member from Miami who did 12 years in Florida state prison for attempted murders and robberies. Now, he’s living just down the street from the wall he hid behind to avoid shootouts as a teen. Only now, he’s a second-year law student.

“I lost my voting eligibilities for life before I had the opportunity to even exercise my voting eligibility,” Sanchez said. “Not mature enough to vote but mature enough to lose it for life.”

Coral Nichols also can’t vote. She is the vice president of Empower to Change Inc., a diversion program for those affected by homelessness, human trafficking and the criminal justice system.

Before she ran a nonprofit office adorned with inspirational quotes, she served five years in a Florida state prison for grand theft and fraud. Before that, she voted in every presidential election she could.

“We are all born with a need to belong, that’s why a lot of kids go into gangs,” Nichols said. “Voting gives voice to people, you belong to society, you belong to culture. So when my voice matters, then I have a buy-in in the community.”

Currently, the only way for someone with a felony conviction to regain his or her right to vote is to ask the governor directly for clemency.

Amendment 4 needs 60 percent of the vote to pass. But it has garnered support across the political spectrum.

There is one organization that is advocating against it: Floridians for a Sensible Voting Rights Policy.

“There are certainly inspirational stories about people who have turned their lives around and whom, most would probably agree, may be entitled to clemency and restoration of voting rights,” executive director Richard Harrison told CNBC in an email. “But that decision should be made on an individualized, case by case basis.”
Angel sees it differently.

“I am exceptional because people have made exceptions for me,” Sanchez said. “And I think if we have a system that doesn’t depend on exceptions, but rather making exceptional stories the norm, we will have more stories like mine.”

Man Shot Attempting to Break Into Fox 5 News Station in Washington, D.C.

A few short hours ago in Washington, D.C.’s NW Friendship Heights area, a man was shot after kicking in two plexiglass doors between the street and the TV station’s lobby.

Video from two surveillance cameras, aired by Fox 5 News, showed the man wearing a red hooded sweatshirt walking up to the door, turning his back to the door and with one hard kick knocking out a plexiglass panel to an exterior door. Gresham said the incident happened at 3 p.m.

The man then entered a small vestibule and began kicking a second door opening to the lobby, the surveillance video shows. After several kicks, he was able to pull down the plexiglass from the second door and he then climbed through the door and into the lobby of the longtime WTTG offices at 5151 Wisconsin Ave. NW.

It looks like that surveillance footage is not currently available at this time. It’s not clear why the building was targeted or who the 37-year-old suspect was. However, according to NBC Washington, the suspect was saying that he wanted Fox 5 to contact President Trump using a phone number that he himself was attempting to provide.

THE CLIMATE CORRECTION–
Observations: Polar Bears Continue To Thrive, Grow In Number, Shredding Forecasts Of Climate Doom

In three new papers, extensive observational evidence suggests that polar bear populations are currently healthier than in the past, and their numbers have been stable or growing in recent decades.

Two New Papers: World’s Heat-Related Deaths Are Declining…Cold Weather Is 20-42 Times More Deadly

By Kenneth Richard on 22. October 2018
Share this…

Observations from two new papers undermine the narrative that says recent and future warming may be dangerous and undesirable. Scientists have determined that (1) people are far more likely to die from exposure to cold temperatures than hot temperatures, and (2) deaths attributed to excessive heat have been on the decline for decades in nearly all countries studied. Given these observations, a justifiable conclusion could be that global warming is beneficial to humanity and attempts to mitigate future warming may serve to educe more human deaths, not less.

Cold Temperatures Kill 20-42 Times More Than Hot Temperatures

A groundbreaking 2015 study analyzing 74 million deaths from 384 locations across the world revealed that cold weather killed 20 times more people than hot weather did between 1985 and 2012.

In India, the fraction of deaths attributable to moderately cold weather was 42 times higher than deaths attributed to “extremely hot weather” according to a comprehensive analysis by Fu et al. (2018).

HANG ON FOR NEXT WEEK-We will bring you the lastest about the World’s Fastest Indian, which Markus shot at the Half Moon Bay exhibit. It recently sold into an new collection after being cleaned and tuned by Steve Huntzinger, for over 1 million.

We may deliver on our 2019 Manifesto and plans for Bikernet and Bandit’s Cantina. But for now I need to put the headquarters back together and build a carport for the Redhead. Hang on for more reports.

And don’t forget Freedom. Anything else is bullshit.
