LABOR DAY SUNDAY ACTION WITH REPORTS FROM DAVENPORT AND THE 105TH

Doclead
Doc, from Heavy Duty mag in Australia, investigating Sturgis and now he’s in Milwaukee.

Hey,

This one of those weekend. I don’t know which way to turn. New Orleans is in hot water again. We decide to ride to Alaska on our way to Sturgis 2009, on vintage styled bikes and the foxy Governor from Alaska become the V.P. candidate. History is changing. Hell, we have an Australian Bikernet reader, Ray Russell, and a friend of the family who is altering the down-under environment in a positive way and producing pure diesel fuel, no sulfur, from old tires and plastic trash and his technology is coming to America.

The news is damn good but scattered with Bonneville, 105th, Paul Newman, Sturgis and more reports. Let’s hit it:

SUPER SAD NEWS– With all the sadness and trauma going on in the world at the moment, it is worth reflecting on the death of a very important person, which almost went unnoticed last week.

Larry LaPrise, the man that wrote “The Hokie Pokey” died peacefully at the age of 93. The most traumatic part for his family was getting him into the coffin. They put his left leg in. And then the trouble started.

REPORT FROM BANDIT’S CANTINA BARTENDER– The town drunk, you know his name, was at the bar drinking away and enjoying every cold drop of the golden nectar.

After about ten beers, two biker girls arrive on one motorcycle. One obviously butch and the other her girlfriend.

The drunk calls the barkeep and tells him, ” send those two fine women drinks on me”.

The barkeep takes the drinks to the female couple. He tells them that they are compliments of the gentleman at the end of the bar.

The mannish woman with the leather jacket thanks the drunk and diplomatically tells him that they are a couple. Lesbians.

The drunk says’ “Okay”. He orders another beer and drinks it.

After a while, the drunk is pretty well the proverbial three sheets into the wind.

He tells the barkeep, “take two drinks to those women and tell them that I can cure them of that lesbian thing”.

The barkeep does as he was asked.

The female mannish looking girl gets irate at this obvious insult by the drunk. She decides to kick his ass.

Her girlfriend says’ ” No honey, just have a word with him”.

She approaches the end of the bar and sits next to the drunk who instantly says, “So ya wanna let me cure you of that lebeen thing?”

She says, “No. But I’ll let you smell my girls crotch for five dollars”.

The drunk takes out a fiver and says, “That’s a deal! Here ya go.”

And she blows into his face.

STURGIS BAR SHOOTING CASE– I think we all need to watch this case. I know that happens all the time, but he is actually getting charged with it. I am not trying to pick on law enforcement, but feel that they should have to abide by the law just like anyone else. The many good people in law enforcement should insist on this as well. It is long overdue for law enforcement to clean up their members.

Grand jurors have indicted two Whatcom County men, a Seattle police officer and a Hells Angel biker shot during a bar fight earlier this month in Sturgis, South Dakota. Five of the men, including Scott Lazalde of Bellingham and James Rector of Ferndale, are members of the Iron Pigs Motorcycle Club, which is made up of law enforcement officers and firefighters. Lazalde and Rector both work for the Blaine sector of U.S. Customs and Border Protection.

Joseph McGuire, 33, of Imperial Beach, Calif., was shot and injured Aug. 9 at the Loud American Roadhouse by Ronald Smith of Seattle, 43, a vacationing off-duty Seattle police detective, authorities said.

Both men are charged with alternative counts of aggravated and simple assault.

The four other men charged are Lazalde, 38; Rector, 44; Dennis McCoy, 59, a Seattle police sergeant, and Erik Pingel, 35, of Aurora, Colo. All were charged with carrying a concealed pistol without a permit and an alternative count of failure to abide by a permit of a reciprocal state.

McGuire and Smith also face those charges, and Smith also is charged with perjury.

“The grand jury must’ve decided that Mr. Smith, having taken an oath to testify truly, in a state proceeding, stated intentionally and contrary to the oath, a material matter which he knew to be false,” Meade County State’s Attorney Jesse Sondreal wrote in an e-mail to the Associated Press.

No court dates have been set.

Ten people testified Thursday before the grand jury. On Aug. 10, 25 people appeared before the same panel, Sondreal told the AP.

In a brief statement Thursday, the Seattle Police Department said only that its officers who were involved remain on paid administrative leave.

Smith, who said after the shooting he had been attacked, had clashed with the Hells Angels before. In 2005, he pressed misdemeanor charges against the owner of a Seattle motorcycle shop, Anthony James Magnesi, for threatening him over the telephone.

Smith was twice disciplined in 2005, first for taunting fans at a Seattle Seahawks playoff game and later after he was accused of threatening to shoot a Tacoma restaurant manager. The first incident resulted in a two-day suspension, the second with a letter in Smith’s file.

He testified last year at a federal racketeering and murder trial involving members of the Washington Nomads chapter of the Hells Angels.

BIKERNET STURGIS/ALASKA RUN 2009– Here’s a rough notion about next year’s run to Sturgis via Alaska. The downside at this point is the number of days, about 21, give or take a few. We would meet in Bellingham, Washington and take a 3-day ferry ride to Anchorage. From there it’s one day to Fairbanks and a half day to the artic circle. Then back and another three day ferry ride back to the Seattle area. Then it’s 4-6 days to Sturgis. We figured 4 days in the Badlands and then back to LA.

If you wanted to ship bikes to Seattle and fly in, we will have a chase truck and enclosed trailer. Let’s ponder this for a week, then panic.

Boss rocks hog heaven Performance at Veterans Park caps rollicking anniversary celebration– Milwaukee?s lakefront was transformed into Thunder Road on Saturday night.

From Lake Drive to the War Memorial and down past Summerfest, tens of thousands of people watched and listened to a continuous throbbing rumble of Harleys capping off a rollicking birthday party with a visit from the Boss.

Who better to headline the final concert of Harley?s 105th anniversary than a hog owner?

?Harley-Davidson motorcycle enthusiasts!? Bruce Springsteen shouted to the crowd at Veterans Park after he and the E Street Band opened with ?Gypsy Rider,? before tearing into ?Out In The Street.?

Heads wrapped in colorful bandannas bobbed beneath the bright lights as Springsteen surfed the crowd and shared his microphone with fans while singing ?Spirit in the Night.?

It was a fitting peak for the days-long celebration that turned southeastern Wisconsin into a roaring parking lot of Harley-Davidson enthusiasts. While the motorcycles were loud, the crowd at the lakefront was relatively mellow.

Before Springsteen took the stage, leather-clad bikers, many in their 60s, strolled along the lakefront with their grandchildren beside them. Non-riders walked their dogs, and teenagers weaved through the crowd on in-line skates.

Motorcyclists in their ’20s comfortably mingled with people old enough to be their grandparents. A Harley was what they had in common, and it transcended the generation gap and other social barriers.

?I can talk about Harleys as easily with a 70-year-old white guy as anyone. It?s something we have in common,? said Michael Rogers, a 35-year-old African-American biker from Ypsilanti, Mich.

Better duck, more incoming in New Orleans– I was just thinking that three years ago this time, I was high-tailing it north on my Softail to Chattanooga from Baton Rouge as Katrina was bearing down on Nawlins. For once, I’d planned my vacation at just the right time.

Katrina’s path north killed my plans to ride the Natchez Trace south and back to Louisiana, so I took a long detour and skedaddled across Tennessee, Arkansas and into Texas, where I crashed at a bro’s place in Plano. Then spent a long day’s ride south and east through the Piney Woods before making it back to south Louisiana and the detritus Katrina left behind.

Glad I ain’t there this time around.

Parade

7,500 motorcycles crank up decibel meter readings– Earplugs? Check. Sound level meter? Check. Harleys? Oh, lots and lots of checks.

Milwaukee was hit by a wall of sound Saturday, a souped-up, tricked-out parade of 7,500 Harley-Davidson motorcycles that rumbled and roared through the city streets during a three-hour extravaganza of machinery and muscle.

At N. 33rd St. and W. Wisconsin Ave, the parade clocked in at a steady 80 decibels ? about the sound of a garbage disposal.

Farther east on Wisconsin, beneath a pedestrian overpass between 4th and 3rd streets, the Harleys hummed at a steady 90 decibels ? that?s lawn-mower noise.

And along the way, you could pick up a few blasts worthy of the ?1812 Overture.? When a dozen motorcycle cops drove by with screeching sirens, that hit 100 decibels ? chain-saw territory.

Harleys, in case you didn?t know it, like to announce their arrival.

?It?s a nice sound, isn?t it?? said John Wollman, 60, a welder from Slinger who watched the parade just a few paces away from his Harley. ?When you ride, that sound is always behind you.?

Ray Johnson, 48, a salesman from Hartford, wouldn?t think of wearing any earplugs while riding his Harley, a 1998 Electra Glide with a 95-cubic-inch motor and a Thunderheader custom exhaust. His motorcycle idles at 80 decibels and with one flick of the throttle puts out 97 decibels. And that?s while parked.

?Everyone likes the sound Harleys make,? he said.
