BACK FROM STURGIS THURSDAY NEWS

Hey,

Ray C. Wheeler and I just rolled back into the headquarters from Sturgis last night. Damn, we still had connections on the list that were missed, but we cut a dusty trail into Las Vegas, met with Joe Zanelli, who owns Rocky’s on Maryland, just off Silverado and got a fantastic lunch and a tour of the kitchen facilities. His sports bar, gaming, 24/7 facility is constantly cooking.

“I can’t take a day off,” Joe said, but he gave us a number of tips regarding owning and operating Bandit’s Barista, the Wilmington vintage motorcycle coffee house.

Okay, so what did I grab from the pine needle and hay strewn Badlands during our quick 3-day encounter? We lived in a dungeon for a couple of days, maybe three. We were introduced to a Veteran’s program and attended the gathering at the VA hospital with Biker’s Choice and Smitty who is an avid drag racer. Wherever he goes drag racing he finds a VA facility, invites bikers, and sets up display for the enjoyment of hospital-bound veterans. It was a moving experience just outside downtown Sturgis.

We had a meeting with Lee Clemens, of Departure Bike Works, Dr. Hamster, and Ray C. Wheeler, the Bikernet Performance Editor, and Dale and Ryan (a Hamster prospect), to discuss Bonneville 2012. Lee is building our 1940 45 flathead with a K-model top end. Ray Wheeler is building his turbo-charged 124-inch rocket ship, and the plans are underway.

We had a meeting with Prince Najar and Chris Callen, the editor in Chief of the Cycle Source regarding their 2012 Subscription Sweepstakes bike build, which will also be connected to the Bandit’s Cantina Sweeps. Brass Knuckles is building, maybe a Victory based chopper, and every new subscriber will have a shot as winning this bike.

We will cover the build on Bikernet over the next few month and into 2012 and the bike will be given away at a Cycle Source event. And no, you don’t need to be at the event to win. Okay, goddamnit, we need to hit the news, but there’s a whole lot more. I’m hoping Kirk Willard, the President of the Motorcycle rider’s foundation made the rounds and started to gather names for the committee that will run the first MRF hosted aftermarket committee. He was going to meet with Lisa Baker and Dave Perewitz. I’ll keep you posted.

AMD SHOW WINNERS– The AMD World Championship of Custom Bike Building came to an exciting conclusion at 3PM on Wednesday in Sturgis, SD with builders competing for the $30,000 championship ring. When dust settled the 2011 Champion was selected by the voting of his peers, Ken Tabata of Yao City, Osaka Japan to the accolades with Tavax 2011V. Lamb Engineering placed second with Son of a Gun and Kraus Motor Co took bronze with Bolide.

N.H. LAWMAKERS MAY MUFFLE MOTORCYCLE NOISE– Motorcycles fans and detractors are revving up for a battle in the state Legislature.
A bill to be introduced by Rep. Michele Peckham, R-North Hampton, would require motorcycles to stay below the 80-decibel noise standard set by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. Current state law allows a maximum of 106 decibels.

The proposal has received the backing of New Hampshire Citizens Against Loud Motorcycles, or NHCALM. The statewide organization announced its support of the bill yesterday.

Bill Mitchell, the group’s founder, said noise from loud motorcycles is infringing on the quality of life in the Granite State, especially in coastal communities.

The fact motorcyclists often ride in groups exacerbates the problem, Mitchell said.
“It’s usually not just one of them, it’s about 15 of them,” he said.

If passed, the law would take effect in 2013.
Peckham, who could not be reached for comment yesterday, is proposing the tougher law because of a battle to restrict motorcycle noise in North Hampton. The town adopted its own ordinance, but it has been challenged in court, Mitchell said.

The proposal requires motorcycles to be equipped with exhaust system mufflers with the EPA’s “Motorcycle Noise Emission Control Information” label.

Violators would be fined at least $350 for a first offense and up to $500 for any subsequent offenses. The law would only apply to street motorcycles manufactured after Jan. 1, 2013.
Mitchell is already gearing up for what he expects will be a tough fight in the Legislature. He doesn’t think the bill will pass, especially after a similar proposal was defeated earlier this year.

“We want to get people writing to their reps,” he said. “Eventually, it will prevail, but it’s probably not going to happen this year and it’s probably not going to happen next year.”

Perhaps the biggest obstacle is the House Transportation Committee, where the previous legislation was defeated, Mitchell said.

“It never got out of committee,” Mitchell said. “Unless you get it out of committee, it’s not going anywhere.”

Mitchell lays the blame on committee Chairman Sherman Packard, R-Londonderry.
Packard, a founding member of the New Hampshire Motorcyclists Rights Organization, said yesterday the proposal is too restrictive.
“It’s ludicrous,” Packard said. “These people, CALM, don’t want motorcycles on the road.”

Packard said the tougher law would be difficult to enforce and would subject motorcyclists to unnecessary harassment.

That’s because police officers would have to stop them to check for the EPA sticker, which is difficult to see without looking underneath the motorcycle, he said.

Most current models do not have the EPA sticker, Packard said.
He said the current law, which banned straight exhaust pipes, does enough to keep noise levels in check. Violators of the 106-decibel law face a fine of $100 to $300, he said. Motorcyclists with straight pipes are fined $250 to $350.

Troy Cormier, owner of Evo Cycle in Londonderry, also said the proposed law is too restrictive.
Cormier said he has no problem with restricting noise levels at night, but sees no need to tighten the law.
“I think the current law is good,” he said. “I don’t think it should be any quieter.”
Cormier said being able to hear a motorcycle on the highway can prevent a serious accident. He recalled a recent incident on Interstate 93 when a motorcycle suddenly came up behind him.
“The only reason I knew he was there was because I could hear him,” he said.”

Sturgis Report: Michael Lichter Jeff Decker Exhibit–The industry party hosted by Michael Lichter of the work and collections of sculpter Jeff Decker was very well attended. Many industry luminaries were in attendance, this is by no means an exhaustive list, but some of the people we spoke with were Burt Baker and James Simonelli of BAKER Drivetrain, Ted Sands and Mark Finney of Performance Machine, Ray Drea of Harley-Davidson, as well as the legendary Clyde Fessler, Hall of Famers Larry Coleman of Barnett Performance, Rogue Herelehy, and Chris Summers. Artist David Uhl, Pat Simmons of the Doobie Brotheres, Laura and Brian Klock and their extended family, Jill and Zack Parham, Kyle and George Marakas of K&G Cycles, video crews from around the world, as well as the motorcycling press from the four corners of the globe.

Free beer, and food, and a cash bar kept the crowd lubricated and the conversation flowing.
The exhibit featured Jeff Decker’s completed sculptures, as well as some in progress, and Jeff’s extensive collection of motorcycle club colors, historic racer’s apparel and of course some truly wonderful motorcycles.
An excellent time was had by all.

THE REAL PROBLEM WITH OUR GOVERNMENTAL SYSTEM – – – (exquisitely said)
The folks who are getting free shit,
don’t like the folks who are paying for the free shit,
because the folks who are paying for the free shit,
can no longer afford to pay for both the free shit and their
own shit.

And, The folks who are paying for the free shit,
want the free shit to stop.
And the folks who are getting the free shit,
want even MORE free shit on top of the free shit they’re already getting!

Now….. The people who are forcing the people who PAY for the free shit,
have told the people who are RECEIVING the free shit, That the people who are PAYING for the free shit, are being mean.

So …. the people who are GETTING the free shit,
have been convinced they need to HATE the people who are PAYING
for the free shit by the people who are forcing the people who are

PAYING for the
free shit and GIVING them the free shit in the first place.

And – – – – – that’s the straight shit!

BIKERNET INSURANCE WEEKLY MEMO, MOTORCYCLE DEALERSHIPS – Now, here’s a good group of people paying far too much for their insurance.

Running a motorcycle dealership, whether one brand like Harley-Davidson, or a multiline dealership serving two or more franchises, is not for the faint of heart these days. Not only do dealers have to worry about the current economic meltdown, they need to think about their building getting destroyed by fire and other calamities. Then there’s the potential of customers slippin’ & fallin’ on their property, or the possibility of just plain getting sued by a suit-happy lawyer who is representing a customer who choked on the Saturday hot-dog offered at the dealership BBQ. Not to mention, worrying about all those motorcycles on the floor that they owe money on. Next time you see the owner of a motorcycle dealership, give ’em a big hug will yas. Times are just darn right too tough for too many of them.

Fortunately, there’s insurance available in the marketplace that will bring some peace of mind to the owners of dealerships — the problem however, is choice or lack thereof. Only a handful of insurance companies even like to insure motorcycle-related businesses and that means that too many good dealers are paying too much for their insurance due to this lack of competition amongst insurers.

Take workers’ compensation insurance for example that covers dealership employees should they get injured on the job. Rates are on their way up in the state of California so premium costs will surely take a big bite out of California dealers in the coming several years. Why? Lack of true competition and a lack of true knowledge by insurance geaks about how motorcycle dealerships really work.

Look-it, buying insurance is not much fun for anybody. The process can be confusing, bewildering and just plain painful when your insurance premium bill is due. Motorcycle dealers need to focus on selling bikes, fixing bikes and retailing everything to do with bikes. Not, getting headaches from their insurance problems.

This is where Bikernet Insurance comes in. We love insurance so that motorcycle dealers don’t have too. We just happen to know the motorcycle business better than any other insurance agency out there. Plus, we are proud members of the California Motorcycle Dealers Association – who buy the way is celebrating its 40th year of serving California motorcycle dealerships.

Remember, you won’t just be a policy number with us. We care about our customers.

BIKERNET CONSUMER PROTECTION AGENCY– Yesterday I was at my local SAM’S CLUB buying a large bag of Purina dog chow for my loyal pet, Scruffy, the Wonder Dog, and was in the checkout line when the woman behind me asked if I had a dog.

What did she think I had – an elephant? So since I’m retired and have little to do, on impulse I told her that no, I didn’t have a dog, I was starting the Purina Diet again. I added that I probably shouldn’t, because I ended up in the hospital last time, but that I’d lost 50 pounds before I awakened in an intensive care ward with tubes coming out of most of my orifices and IVs in both arms.

I told her that it was essentially a perfect diet and that the way that it works is to load your pants pockets with Purina nuggets and simply eat one or two every time you feel hungry. The food is nutritionally complete so it works well and I was going to try it again.

Horrified, she asked if I ended up in intensive care because the dog food poisoned me.

I told her no. I said that I stepped off a curb to sniff an Irish Setter’s ass and a car hit us both. –CarlR

BIKERNET MEDICAL CENTER CAMPING ALERT–  Preventing Poison Ivy, if you enjoy camping out in the summer, you should be aware of poison ivy. Along with poison oak and sumac, this non-flowering plant can cause severe allergic reactions, resulting in an intensely itchy, red rash with bumps or blisters. Once you make contact with poison ivy, try the following to minimize symptoms:

1. Avoid touching other parts of your body. This is especially important immediately after exposure, since the irritating oils can be transferred to other areas.

2. Rinse affected areas with plenty of cold water immediately after exposure to flush out oils, or wash with rubbing alcohol.

3. Use an over-the-counter product known as Tecnu lotion, which works well to remove oils up to 24 hours after contact.

4. If the itching has begun to develop, run hot water – as hot as you can stand – on the affected areas. The itching will briefly become intense, but then will stop for several hours, as the nerves that convey the sensory information to the brain become overloaded and quit. Repeat the hot water treatment as necessary – but be cautious.

5. Relieve itching with calamine lotion and aloe vera gel.

6. Try witch hazel (Hamamelis virginiana) to treat poison ivy blisters. Available in liquid distillation, it can be found at any drug store and can be safely used by both adults and children.

Keep in mind that serious cases of poison ivy require medical supervision and prescription treatment – contact your physician if you run a fever of 101 degrees or higher, if blisters ooze pus, or if the rash is widespread or near sensitive areas such as eyes, mouth or genitals. For more information, visit the Condition Care Guide on DrWeil.com.

LAS VEGAS BIKEFEST NAMES NEVADA CHILDHOOD CANCER FOUNDATION AS 2011 CHARITY BENEFICIARY–
Las Vegas, NV August 11, 2011……… Las Vegas BikeFest Event Producers have chosen Nevada Childhood Cancer Foundation as the recipient of charitable donations received through events at the 2011 Las Vegas BikeFest. The major fundraiser will be the Annual Las Vegas BikeFest Poker Tournament, to be held Saturday, October 1st at 5:00pm at the Golden Nugget Hotel and Casino.

Nevada Childhood Cancer Foundation is a local organization, founded in 1993, serving over 200 new diagnoses each year in the Southern Nevada community. Along with children newly diagnosed, NCCF continues to serve over 100 more children that are in active treatment or suffer from secondary effects (or side effects) from treatments and disease causing physical and educational disabilities as well as secondary cancers. NCCF’s biggest impact program, Camp Cartwheel, is the largest camp in the western region welcoming 135 critically ill children and their siblings along with over 160 volunteers.

Jeff Gordon, President/CEO of the Foundation welcomes the relationship. “We already have a relationship with many of the Las Vegas BikeFest supporters such as Hogs & Heifers and Las Vegas Events, so this is a natural tie-in. Knowing how important children’s causes are to the biker community, we are looking forward to thanking everyone for their support at the event.”

More information regarding the Poker Tournament and the 2011 Las Vegas BikeFest is now available on the event’s website, www.LasVegasBikeFest.com. LITTLE KNOWN TIDBIT OF NAVAL HISTORY… The U. S. S.. Constitution (Old Ironsides), as a combat vessel, carried 48,600 gallons of fresh water for her crew of 475 officers and men. This was sufficient to last six months of sustained operations at sea. She carried no evaporators (i.e. fresh water distillers).
However, let it be noted that according to her ship’s log, “On July 27, 1798, the U.S.S. Constitution sailed from Boston with a full complement of 475 officers and men, 48,600 gallons of fresh water, 7,400 cannon shot,
11,600 pounds of black powder and 79,400 gallons of rum.”

Her mission: “To destroy and harass English shipping.”

Making Jamaica on 6 October, she took on 826 pounds of flour and 68,300 gallons of rum.
Then she headed for the Azores, arriving there 12 November.. She provisioned with 550 pounds of beef and 64,300 gallons of Portuguese wine.

On 18 November, she set sail for England.
In the ensuing days she defeated five British men-of-war and captured and scuttled 12 English merchant ships, salvaging only the rum aboard each.

By 26 January, her powder and shot were exhausted. Nevertheless, although unarmed she made a night raid up the Firth of Clyde in Scotland. Her landing party captured a whisky distillery and transferred 40,000 gallons of single malt Scotch aboard by dawn. Then she headed home.

The U. S. S. Constitution arrived in Boston on 20 February 1799, with no cannon shot, no food, no powder, no rum, no wine, no whisky, and 38,600 gallons of water.

OFFICIAL BIKERNET BOOK REVIEWER ATTEND THE BLACK HILLS RALLY–
A short note and lots of pix from Sturgis T. I’m already home nursing a severe sunburnt nose. Lovin it.

Monday on the first official day of the Rally in Sturgis dawned cool and clear. The day warmed up as The Horse Backstreet Choppers Bike Show at the Full Throttle Saloon.

Bikes from all over the US jammed the grass inside the massive venue. Just walking between the scoots was hard enough and was made even tougher due to massive amounts of swag being thrown into the crowd.

That was to be just a warmup for the downtown scene. As usual the outrageous, the courageous and the just plain dangerous were out in full force under the watchful eyes of John Law. All was good and if there was any gridlock that day we missed it.

After all that action on Main Strret it was back to the Throttle for Black Oak Arkansas and Molly Hatchet. Lord, I really do need to take a rest and get some of that sleep stuff.

Whew, see ya later.

BIKERNET TECH REVIEW–There a build on your site featuring a 97 inch build that uses the S&S 583 EZ start cams. It was said on the site that other runs were going to be completed with different pipes. Did these ever get completed and where can I find those dyno sheets?

I am looking at a very similar build using a 95” kit, same cam, same cam plate. There are some differences, including the fact that I plan on using a 2 into 1 Supertrapp exhaust system. Seeing some variations of this build would be helpful.

UNCLE MONKEY ON THE BLACK HILLS RALLY–Many of you reading this will have just gotten back from the 71st annual Sturgis motorcycle rally. Bleary eyed, road worn it is now time to get back the daily grind. For me, like many people, Sturgis was not in the cards this year. It would have been a good year to go because many of my great friends would be making the trip. Unfortunately, my motorcycle sits on the workbench waiting for much needed cash for it to be completed. Lots of people I know ask why I didn’t go this year. Many know I don’t have a running bike but they suggest I simply take my truck and go. I politely smile and say you can’t go to the Black Hills and Sturgis without a motorcycle.

I believe one should ride to a rally, but I do realize some of my readers trailer their bikes, including the sonuvabitch who runs this website. Campgrounds, gas stations and parking lots are full of RV’s and trailers but that is where they stay (or should stay). Places like Deadwood, Sturgis and Mount Rushmore are not places to be traipsing around in a cage during the rally.

My friends don’t understand mostly because they have never been to Sturgis. For someone who have never been there it is hard to fathom streets lined with bikes from one end of a town to the next parked not only to the curb but also along the center meridian. The sheer number of bikes is overwhelming with four-wheeled vehicles outnumbered thousands to one. Yes, some people still try to drive down main street Sturgis in their diesel 4×4 but I’m not going to be one of them.

If you’ve never been to Sturgis you really must go. Find a friend who knows the lay of the land and head out on your motorcycle. While I could wax on about the beautiful countryside (it is), the comradely of being with fellow riders (always is) Sturgis is more then that.

We have all taken a trip on our motorcycle and are use to sharing the road with our caged friends but as you near the Black Hill that changes. Slowly, one by one cars and trucks are replaced with baggers and bobbers. Waving to fellow riders suddenly doesn’t have the same importance because you simply can’t wave to everyone any more.

Bikes going in all directions populate four way stops. Traffic is heavy but it is all motorcycles. Inside you feel an unknown relief. Relief that you don’t have to worry about that soccer mom in the SUV talking on her cell phone while putting on make-up. You no longer have to worry about that pale businessman reading the Wall Street Journal, hoping to grab a competitive edge before going into this morning’s meeting. We no longer worry about that inexperienced teenage driver laughing and giggling with her friends about some cute boy at school.

Suddenly you are overwhelmed with understanding, comradely. Everyone around you has ridden those same miles through pouring rain and scorching desert heat. They’ve had bugs imprinted in their almond skin at 75 mph, and faced road-worn stones kicked up into their shins from passing trucks. Sturgis is meant for motorcycles and motorcycles are meant for Sturgis.

BONNEVILLE RACING REPORT– On August 5th, I saw a disturbing post on Facebook from Roger Goldammer. It was concerning the fact that The United States is not
allowing Canadian members of the Hells Angels Motorcycle Club into the country. This is preventing Rogers brother Richard, from traveling to Utah for the Bub International Speed Trials at the Bonneville Salt Flats this month.

So I called Roger in B.C. to capture a more detailed picture of this restrictive situation.

Apparently this all came to light when some Club members tried to ride from Canada to Laconia N.H. to attend to World Run. Denied! Don’t know why.

Now it appears that Richards annual trip to Bonneville is not going to happen because of
his membership with H.A. Clean record doesn’t seem to matter, just his patches. His crime must be his love of motorcycles and wanting to ride with his Brothers.

I haven’t seen additional public information yet, but I’m pretty sure some lawyers are working on clearing this up.

And although this may seem small time to some and has little to no effect on most of our day to day living, think of what has happened to others in the past.

The loss of freedom always begins with small steps of blanket decisions and judgments . Then the list continues to expand as the government feels the need to manage everyone’s liberty for their own good.

At this stage this may or may not be the start of something bigger, point being, stay vigilant! And much respect to Richard and Roger, they are both “Stand Up” guy’s in my book! Hope this cleared up
fast!

And lets not forget about the ATF and DOJ these days!

MOTORCYCLE ENFORCEMENT OPERATION– scheduled for Sunday–Napa police will conduct a motorcycle enforcement operation on Sunday in an effort to reduce the number of motorcycle deaths and injuries, police said.

No times were given for when the officers will strictly enforce traffic violations that can lead to motorcycle collisions, injuries or deaths. According to Napa police, the extra patrols take place in areas frequented by motorcyclists.

The primary causes of motorcycle-involved crashes include speeding, unsafe turning, alcohol or drug impairment, and inexperience, police said.
California is one of three states with the most motorcycle deaths in the nation, even though the number of motorcycle crash fatalities decreased by 30 percent between 2009 and 2008, statistics show. Statewide, there were 204 deaths in 1998 and 560 in 2008 involving motorcycles — a 175 percent increase during the 11-year period, authorities said. In 2009, in the city of Napa, 18 people were involved in major motorcycle-related crashes, according to Napa police.

Between 2006 and 2008, 58 percent of motorcycle operators under the age of 25 who were killed in a crash were not licensed, police said.

The enforcement program is paid for with a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety through the National Highway Administration, police said.
Motorcycle training is available through the California Motorcyclist Safety Program. For information, call 877-743-3411 or visit CA-msp.org.

Hamsters USA raise $282,357 for special kids served by Children’s Care in Rapid City, South Dakota–The international motorcycle group Hamsters USA raised $282,357 for Children’s Care of Rapid City during their annual meeting and dinner on Monday, August 8th. The banquet was held in Spearfish, SD, as part of the Sturgis Rally.
Funds were raised through a silent auction and the raffle of an RSD Harley-Davidson “Nightster,” motorcycle, created by bike builder Roland Sands and donated by Justyn Amstutz of National Powersports Auctions. The raffle winner was John Roshala of Poway, CA, who donated the bike back to Children’s Care.

Funds raised will provide physical, occupational, and speech therapies, plus special educational and psychological services to children in Western South Dakota–plus parts of Wyoming–through Children’s Care of Rapid City.

Hamsters USA has raised and donated funds at their annual meeting for the last five years, wanting to give back to the greater Black Hills community, which many Hamsters consider to be their second home. Their gifts help provide services to children in their own homes and communities, delivered by Children’s Care personnel who drive over 10,000 miles a month to provide services.

John Christner honored with 6th annual Chrome Heart Award
Hamster member John Christner of Sapulpa, OK, was stunned and touched to receive the Chrome Heart Award, presented by Children’s Care to honor individuals in the motorcycle world “whose philanthropic support and civic duty represents everything positive in the industry and sport of motorcycling.”

Christner, who owns John Christner Trucking, Inc, supports many charitable organizations in addition to Children’s Care, including the Sacramento Food Bank and Family Services, the Tulsa Boy’s Home “Run for the Roses” event, the United Way of Oklahoma, the North Texas Food Bank, Vaccine Awareness, and St. Mary’s Food Bank of Arizona.

He also started a Pay it Forward program with his employees, in which he gives $100 to 75 of his employees and asks them to “pay it forward” by giving it to someone else who needs a hand up. Christner has persuaded 55 other trucking companies to do the same, to help create a sense of hope and belonging in those communities.

CTEK To Sponsor Valerie Thompson and Kerry Alter/Julian Bivins Racing Team In Land Speed Record Attempts at Bonneville BUB Speed Trials– (Twinsburg, OH) –August 8, 2011– CTEK, makers of the “Wolrd’s Smartest Battery Chargers”, has announced it will sponsor motorcycle racer Valerie Thompson and the Kerry Alter/Julian Bivins Racing Team in their attempt to set multiple land speed records with a BMW 1000cc Superbike and Suzuki Hayusbusa for the 8th Annual BUB Speed Trials.

Ken Palmman, CTEK’s VP, commented on the decision to sponsor this effort saying, “Valerie is already a 2-time land speed record holder and the team are proven winners. CTEK Smarter Chargers are currently offered by some of the leading automotive brands around the world. Now we want to increase our brand awareness within the motorcycling community”

Both Valerie and team co-owner, Kerry Alter, will be attempting new speed records. Kerry will be driving a Suzuki Hayusbusa in the 1350cc class while Valerie will pilot the BMW 1000cc Superbike. The team’s goal is to be the world’s fastest 1000cc production motorcycle and gain membership in the prestigious 200 MPH Club. The “200 MPH Club” was formed in 1953. Today there are 678 members, with only 15 females officially listed.

CTEK is no stranger to motorcycling, having commissioned the design and construction of “Big Toe”, the world’s largest powered two-wheeled vehicle, now featured in the Guinness Book of World Records. “We first met Valerie in her role as a spokeswoman/motorcycle presenter at the Barrett-Jackson auto auction when we sold “Big Toe”. We were impressed by her professionalism and racing accomplishments. We are pleased to be working with her again”, commented Palmman.

The BUB Motorcycle Speed Trials are held August 27 through September 1 at the famed Bonneville Salt Flats, near Wendover Utah. The event is hosted by the American Motorcycle Association (AMA), which verifies and sanctions all US national records. All world records are verified and sanctioned by the Fédération Internationale de Motoclisme (FIM). Over 300 racers will attempt land speed records this year, yet less than 10% will set records based on historical performance, signifying the difficulty of this endeavor.

WHEREAS MY ASS–I hit on some of the highlights of our dusty Dakota visit, but there were numerous upbeat encounters. We met Robert the traveling knife vendor, who promised to send us the knife of the week. He drags quality knives to over 20 events every year and sells them for fantastic prices. Of course I bought the only knife he had that housed colorful dice in the handle.

We met up with Tim from Negotiable, the used Harley wheeler-dealer, then Bud from Bud’s Motorcycle Shop in Austin, and we took care of Biz with the Sturgis Swapmeet crew, Joe, Randy, and Shirley, another used bike part vendor. We ran into Jay Allen, Puppy the old biker who never stops and has a chapter in my Terry the Tramp book.

Since we were trailer queens, pulling the Salt Shaker and the Sturgis Chop across the country, we listened to books on tape. It’s a good way to blow past that gas station you needed desperately. We listen to Treasure Island, the amazing historical tale of pirates and treasure. We listened to Larry McMurtary’s latest book Rhino Ranch, and the recent John Grisham lawyerly crime novel.

I always learn something more about penmanship and story lines.

I’ll bring you more inside info on Sunday in the Cantina. There’s secrets from the Main street alleys where the whiskey flowed and the parties never stopped. I’m still coming down from the road trip.

And by Sunday I’ll scour my tattered notes, make a few phone calls, apologize to a couple of broads, and get to work building motorcycles again.

Ride Forever,

–Bandit
