Bad In Black: The Tough New VRSCB Debuts

vrod riding shot

Long, menacing, and very, very blacked-out. The new VRSCB V-Rod is the power cruiser only Harley-Davidson could build. Though based on the award winning and original VRSCA V-Rod, the VRSCB sets its own agenda, with a tougher presence that will appeal to the traditionalist with an interest in performance. The V-Rod is the most popular H-D model in Europe.

The VRSCA V-Rod and VRSCB V-Rod are almost identical mechanically. Power comes from the mind-bending 115-hp Revolution V-Twin, 60 degrees and 1130cc of fuel-injected, liquid-cooled, dual overhead cam muscle, which is ready to rev to a 9000 rpm redline and pound out 74 ft. lbs. of torque at 7000 rpm. The bodywork is aluminum. Disc wheels and a 38 degree fork are straight off a dragster. The tubular, hydroformed chassis is stiff, strong and beautiful. The VRSC models offer an unmatched blend of classic Harley-Davidson style, road-burning performance and cutting-edge technology.

The VRSCA and VRSCB share several mechanical changes for 2004. North American models offer a 28-tooth front drive sprocket in place of the original 30-tooth sprocket. This lower gearing allows the bike to absolutely launch off the line. Roll-on acceleration is also improved. The instrument cluster receives several upgrades. The speedometer maximum speed is changed from 140 mph to 150 mph (220 kph to 240 kph) to more accurately reflect the top-end power of the Revolution engine. The odometer reading can now be accessed with the ignition off by simply pressing and releasing the “trip” button.

The world's favorite power cruiser is available in five new colors for 2004, replacing the original silver anodized aluminum bodywork. New color choices include Impact Blue, Lava Red Sunglo, two-tone Luxury Teal and Brilliant Silver or Smokey Gold and Vivid Black. And of course, there's Vivid Black, the favorite color of Harley owners world wide. All color choices also feature new raised chrome letter graphics that highlight the paint. All VRSCA bikes receive a new silver leafed aluminum frame paint with a higher sheen than the original silver paint. The frame is also now clear-coated for improved durability.

VRSCB V-Rod

Consider this a reinterpretation of the original, a V-Rod from the tough end of the gene pool. Start with a black frame and black-and-silver engine with polished highlights, then add black to components like the control levers, rear springs and brake calipers. Then choose from colors Anodized Aluminum, Vivid Black or Racing Orange. Finally, a new interchangeable handlebar and minimalist, silver instrument housing give the VRSCB a harder edge than its V-Rod brother.
