Hey,
We’re flying around the Headquarters. Ramon and Red are working the bricks on the front of the building. Ray scrambles every day closer to Bonneville. Sturgis is smoking right now, the Boot Ride with the Sons of Anarchy hits in a couple of weeks, and the 110th H-D anniversary will cap the month of August.
I just finished the esteemed bikernet weather vane, but it needs tuning. I also discovered a way to align the Mudflap Girl FXR and I tried it out with the help of Kyle the shop intern. Then I wrote the following in the Sunday Post and was impressed with myself, so I’m running it here.
“Think FREEDOM first.” If they thought about freedom first they would come up with educational programs instead of laws. They would throw some laws or regs right out the window, because this is a free country. What’s life without freedom? All the safety in the world won’t do us any good if we aren’t free! It’s simple, “Think FREEDOM First.”—K. Ball
The boss of the Motorcycle Riders Foundation liked it. Our MRF Industry Council will be represented at the Broken Spoke in Sturgis for the first time and we hope to start building Industry members, and Bikernet will stand tall at 2Wheelers on Main. Betsy is covering all the media action, Ben is working with the new launch of the Indian Chief. Rogue will cover the tech and the whiskey. Buck covers Baggers and Cigars, and Toby Keith will cover the news about Brass Balls Cycles at the Chip. The list rolls on.
Let’s hit the news:
The Bikernet Thursday News is Sponsored in part by IronWorks, Cycle Source, and Biker Pics.
TOBY KEITH TAKES OWNERSHIP STAKE IN BRASS BALLS CYCLES-–
He Partners With Champion Bike Builder Dar Holdsworth’s Bike Company.
(NASHVILLE, Tenn.) Singer, songwriter, entertainer and entrepreneur Toby Keith has taken his love of motorcycles to a new level as he partners with Brass Balls Cycles’ Dar Holdsworth as co-owner of the award-winning, Oklahoma City-based custom/production bike builder.
The partnership will be publicly announced August 6 as Keith returns to headline the legendary Sturgis Buffalo Chip Motorcycle Rally. Also at The Chip, Holdsworth and the Brass Balls team will be featured in a Bike Build-Off being filmed for CMT. The finished motorcycle will be given to a Vietnam vet at the conclusion of the event.
“This partnership will help Brass Balls Cycles increase its U.S. market presence, as well as expand the brand internationally,” Holdsworth says. “We will be revealing new and revised models in the near future and, as always, proudly power our bikes with American made S&S V-Twin motors.”
A longtime motorcycling enthusiast (as depicted in his “American Ride” video), Keith met Holdsworth through the Pros 4 Vets organization. Earlier this year, Brass Balls Cycles built a custom bike that was raffled to support the Toby Keith Foundation’s OK Kids Korral project.
About Toby Keith: Featured on the cover of the current issue of Forbes and named the highest-paid country performer of 2013, Keith is known for many successful ventures including his I Love This Bar And Grill restaurant chain, Wild Shot Mezcal and more. But his business acumen is secondary to his success as a music creator and performer. His latest single “Drinks After Work” is rocketing up the charts, and leads an upcoming album of new music. And his Hammer Down Tour, Presented By Ford F-Series will continue to pack venues nationwide into the fall.
About Dar Holdsworth: An Air Force veteran of Desert Storm, Holdsworth is a two-time AMD World Champion custom/production motorcycle builder who founded Brass Balls Cycles in 2006. The company specializes in timeless and uncompromising American motorcycles, offering a line of Bobbers, Choppers and Sport Cruisers.

MRF INDUSTRY COUNCIL REPORT—I was called on the carpet recently since I couldn’t make the MRF Board of Directors meeting. “Lt. Ball, we need your report on the progress of the MRF Industry council, now.”
I started off my report about wanting those little airplane Jack Daniels bottles in the staff vending machine, but that didn’t go over so hot, so I got serious.
I’m working with Chris Callen and Rob Keller from Cycle Source Magazine on Sturgis activities. The MRF Industry Council will have a major presence at the Broken Spoke location all through the rally. Announcements will be made on stage. We will also have booth space and folks to man a booth. Board members are always welcome to work the booth and talk to folks about motorcycling issues.
Our team is playing with the logo some to bring it up to date, but we still need banners and brochures for the event, if that is possible. If not let me know as quickly as possible, so I can make other arrangements. As it turns out Dawn is delivering 4000 brochures to the booth at the Spoke and banners.
MRF announcements will be made prior to several Broken Spoke Concerts. Let me know if any board members will be attending.
I have finally received some progress on our judging criteria with Bob Kay former VP at Biker’s Choice and American Iron Horse, and Jeff Najar, which should put the MRF in front of the public and our industry at as many as a dozen shows next year. Plus we are developing a standardized judging platform that will add serious criteria, and significance to judging and make bike owner much more comfortable with the outcome of any show.
Plus, we are creating a judging training video so all of our MRF certified judges will be on the same page. I’ll report in on more progress as we move forward.
Consider joining. It’s just $100 a year for any company, club, individual, group, shop, you name it.

BIKERNET UNIVERSITY ENGLISH DEPARTMENT BANDIT VOCABULARY LESSON OF THE WEEK–dreck drek, noun:
1. worthless trash; junk.?2. excrement; dung.
Though composed rapidly, it’s a better elegy than Milton’s to Edward King or Shelley’s on the death of John Keats, which is pure dreck—revolting, sentimental dreck.
— Joseph Heller, God Knows, 1997
But in the end it’s all dreck, or if not dreck then some form of bathetic aspiration: for our lives to course as smoothly, shifted but never stopped, draining into some glorious & storied sea.
— Jonathan Miles, Dear American Airlines, 2009
Dreck entered English in the 1920s from the Yiddish word drek, which comes from the German word Dreck meaning “filth.”
SPOTTED IN NORTH CAROLINA–Was out with my lovely wife Sat night and saw these sweet rides in a storefront next door to a tattoo shop.
They were going to have a David Mann exhibit and had these on display. Nice clean rides. These are just shitty camera phone pix but thought they looked pretty good.

BAD JOKE LIBRARY DEPARTMENT, Blonde MEN Jokes– A friend told the blonde man: “Christmas is on a Friday this year.”
The blonde man then said, “Let’s hope it’s not the 13th.”

Two blonde men find three grenades, and they decide to take them to a police station.
One asked: “What if one explodes before we get there?”
The other says: “We’ll lie and say we only found two.”

BIKERNET MOVIE REVIEW—
The best part of the movie ‘Dead in Five Heartbeats’ is the possible “sequel”. I had the honor of viewing a premier in Cleveland, OH June 29, 2013. It was dramatic indeed! This movie is a must see. Witness loyalty, honor, tragedy and irony in the 1% way of life. In the movie, it is hinted that a “sequel” is coming. God indeed works in mysterious, supernatural and multidimensional ways!
The Christian flavored “sequel” message could have enormous & ever-expanding impacts. This may well be revolutionary from a true and well respected Rebel/maverick/icon – Sonny.
Perhaps a religious revival and emergence of new loyalty could evolve. People from all walks of life could mend fences and pursuing new in-roads; even beyond themselves to enhance and empower their quality of life.
Those who choose to walk on from this life, while they still live should be confronted; i.e. suicide by depression, obesity, lack of exercise, proper nutrition, practicing common sense, forgiving others “don’t let the sun set upon your anger”. Ephesians 4:26-27.
The earned media will have a heyday – anticipation of a “sequel” to ‘Dead in Five Heartbeats’ will go viral. Beyond intrigue, people will be involved!
God speaks to us through others; God speaks to others through us. Sonny, as you know, “the hand of God has been upon you!”
The value and purpose of your life is far beyond you. Your existence and past is not just of your own. You have a responsibility to harness unlimited potential and serve mankind through the Lord’s unique perspectives.
Sonny, Zorana, Jeff, Christine, Jeff: Destiny is at our doorstep! God Bless You and all you do for all those whose lives you touch!
Pray to Live, Live to Ride.
God Bless You

HANG ON FOR THE SAFETY DEVICE OF THE WEEK, Introducing Text Deflector–
Automatically Responds to Texts Safely While You’re Driving
The superior smart phone app designed to provide a safer driving environment for everyone. It’s no secret that traffic accidents caused by texting while driving are soaring, and compounding the problem, research shows the majority of young adults think they can safely drive a vehicle and use their phone at the same time.
This disturbing trend is not just a young driver issue; it directly impacts our lives and the lives of our loved ones.
Text Deflector is a free app designed to take the impulse to respond to texts out of drivers’ hands so they can focus on the task at hand… driving safely. Text Deflector works by sensing and linking to in-car handsfree devices (Bluetooth, wired headset, etc.) and automatically responds with no user input to any incoming texts, notifying the sender that the driver is unavailable and optionally requesting the sender call instead.
“This is an app that should come pre-installed in every phone for the safety of the driving community,” says Suite B Media’s director of marketing, Loralee Fultz. “Text Deflector is simple to use — just launch the app and assign it to any in-car Bluetooth hands-free device and it’s ready to go.”
Text Deflector Features:
•Completely automatic
•Not locked to a service provider or carrier
•Senses in-car devices automatically with no manual input
•Not GPS based or motion based
•Maintains privacy
•Imports contacts for customization
•Causes zero additional battery drain
•FREE
•Premium version available
Upgrade in-app to Text Deflector Premium and receive additional functionality:
•Multiple custom response messages
•Select multiple paired Bluetooth devices
•Assign a custom message to each Bluetooth device
•Assign a custom message to Contacts
Both versions are 100% ad free. Text Deflector – The Smart Auto Responder!
Text Deflector is available now FREE for Android devices via Google Play. Apps for Windows and Blackberry devices coming soon.

UNCLE MONKEY ON THE ONSLAUGHT OF TECHNOLOGY–While I think we overdose on technology, it does have its advantages. In renovating my garage, one of the things I will be doing includes running data cables and a chase to quickly add and upgrade in the future.
Many of my friends shake their heads when I talk about adding wi-fi to a garage but a laptop computer with Internet access is one of the most important tools in my toolbox now. The wealth of knowledge is hard to comprehend sometimes.
I remember the good old days when you needed information it was weeks of hunting and gathering, talking to friend, of a friend, who knew some guy who use to have one, burning the midnight oil at the library reading books, hoping they had books with the information we seek. Back in my youth I was a car guy struggling to build sixties Fords. It was frustrating. It seemed like only ’66 parts fit ’66.
I envied the Chevy guys for their limitless interchangeably. My only comfort was at least I wasn’t a Dodge guy. You can image the excitement finding the Holy Grail; a parts catalog from some guy in B.C. who had NOS parts.
This weekend as we stumbled through the overgrown grass of the family farm we stumble upon one of my uncle’s long forgotten cars. Before we could even get the door open my son had looked up the car, told me the production numbers, parts interchangeably, several forums where to find more info. The Internet has become the valuable tool that we could have only wished for before.
In picking up the Kawasaki, I quickly did a search and found more information than I could possibly need – how to syncho the carbs, how to grease and oil the shaft drive, how to rebuild the motor, wiring diagrams, forums and support groups for people with similar bikes. With a few keystrokes I can source parts from around the world or from down the road, talk to a new friend half way around the world who faced the same problems and how he conquered them.
Within hours of finding an old abandoned car I was talking with a bloke in England who worked on the assembly line building the 45-year-old car.
Like all tools the Internet is only as good as the person using it. I don’t think I’m a guru but I’ve surfed long enough I know what keywords to look for and which websites to discredit without wasting my time to look at – yes I’m talking about you ask.com. I can tell how good the information and the knowledge level of the members of a forum by the layout and design of the forum.
The information is there forever. So who knows? Maybe you’ve stumbled across this some day in the distant future trying to research motorcycles and this lifestyle we love so much. To you I say keep up with technology and learn what to use and what you don’t need.

SCTA Announces Audio Streaming of the 2013 Bonneville Speed Week Orosi, CA USA, July 30th Tuesday, 2013–
Scott C. Andrews SCTA Secretary/Chief Timer
The SCTA wishes to announce that for the first time a live audio broadcast will be available through the SCTA website www.scta-bni.org. This is a first for the SCTA in officially releasing real time audio information from the famed Bonneville Salt Flats in Utah during this year’s Speed Week.
Sponsors, fans, supporters and families of those in competition can join with the announcing staff consisting of Harold Osmer and Ron Christensen during the entire week of speed trials and record setting attempts this year. The SCTA is expecting in excess of 500 vehicles in competition to break those elusive and special SCTA Bonneville records and now you can hear the show as it happens live.
To hear this year’s show simply go to the SCTA website www.scta-bni.org and look up the link under 2013 Bonneville Speed Week information. After you have clicked on the link you will be sent to a special page with the show streaming live.
The Southern California Timing Association (SCTA) sanctions land speed racing trials in two locations. Racing is conducted six times each year at the El Mirage Dry Lake bed in Southern California and also the world renowned Bonneville Speed Week in August combined with the World Finals in October of each year at the Bonneville Salt Flats in northwestern Utah.
THE COOKS AT COOK’S RECOGNIZE THE BROADS–It was about five or six years ago when Rhonda, the manager at Cooks Corner thought it would be nice to recognize ladies who ride motorcycles.
What better way than to get them all together and have a group ride in celebration? Well, any good ride needs a good cause and how closer to the heart can a benefit to increase breast cancer awareness be?
So she got together with the good folks at the old Fullerton Harley Davidson Dealership to establish a starting point and the rest is history. The crowd has gotten consistently larger and rowdier with last year actually being the most over the top raucous group to date.
This year however was nothing to scoff at having the place full and the parking was minimal due to the number of vehicles bringing the generous merry makers. I say generous because the live auction saw a few items go off in the thousand dollar range. A very successful fundraiser for St Jude’s Hospital, the lucky recipient of this years proceeds.

Austin, TX (July 24, 2013) – Few things compare to a motorcycle ride through Southern California. What if you could enjoy the open road with the cast from FX’s hit show Sons of Anarchy? That’s exactly what you can do August 25th at the 3rd Annual Boot Ride and Rally benefiting our military through the national nonprofit, The Boot Campaign. http://BootRide.com
The 3rd Annual Boot Ride and Rally takes place on Sunday, August 25th in Los Angeles, CA. This one-of-a-kind ride allows you to role with the cast – Kim Coates, Mark Boone Jr., and Theo Rossi just to name a few – of FX’s Sons of Anarchy and our nation’s fearless military veterans. Ride spots are extremely limited to ensure an intimate VIP experience for all riders.
In 2010, the cast of FX’s Sons of Anarchy joined the Boot Campaign’s network of celebrity supporters when they posed for their official “Boot Photo”. Since then, the cast has become a powerful advocate of the Boot Campaign not only through the annual Boot Ride and Rally, but also through various speaking engagements, media appearances and fundraising events throughout the year.
“I’m proud to be an Ambassador for the Boot Campaign, and couldn’t be more excited to participate in the 3rd Annual Boot Ride & Rally,” said Theo Rossi, actor on FX’s Sons of Anarchy. “I am in complete awe of our military men & women and their families, and seeing the general public come from all over to participate, wear their boots and embrace this event, is truly inspiring.”
The Ride rolls out from the coast and straight into the Rally (party time!) at the Happy Ending Bar and Restaurant on Sunset Blvd in Hollywood.
At the Rally, rock out to performances by Blackberry Smoke, Tyler Bryant and the Shakedown, and other surprise guests.
You can snap photos of your favorite Sons of Anarchy cast member on the Red Carpet, and much more! This year, the Boot Campaign has a special surprise in store to benefit Southern California Veterans affected by homelessness. Hands down, this is a party like none you’ve ever experienced!
The Boot Ride and Rally is an annual event that has raised more than $100,000 to provide direct assistance to military, past and present, and their families through the Boot Campaign.
Ride tickets start at $150/ person. Your Ride ticket also gets you into the Rally. You can purchase a Rally only ticket; prices start at $35/ person. Get your tickets now: http://BootRide.com
ZACK NESS NEW TV SERIES—
As many of you may already know, Zach Ness has a new TV series airing on NAT GEO in August. He and his team have been working really hard for the last six months.
Hours and hours of bike building and filming. I would like to invite you downtown to the Victory booth on Sunday from 12 to 3.
We have a little Ness family competition going on . Arlen, Cory and Zach have each customized their new Victory and we need the public to pick the winner.
Please come down and vote for your favorite. They will be filming for the show and we would love to have a bunch of yellow shirts in the crowd. I have seen all three bikes and I am glad I don’t get to vote. It is a tough choice! Hope to see Sunday.
“Let It Ride” premieres August 14th at 9pm on NAT GEO.

MEMO FROM THE BIKERNET CHAPEL–Why Go to Church?
One Sunday morning, a mother went in to wake her son and tell him it was time to get ready for church, to which he replied, “I’m not going.”
“Why not?”, she asked.

My apple is rockin’ one more time after one helleva month packed full of progress on all fronts. Good news by the bunch, hang on for a few of the latest developments.
Preparing for our Bub Speed Trials Adventure commencing Saturday, 8/24/2013, Tech opens for the event after a winter in the trenches. Some days much easier than others.
Friday, 7/12/2013 we discovered injector size was insufficient, story of my life at times. Our 5-Ball Racing Team Raycer was running out of fuel mid way through the rpm range, so we called it a day to regroup.
By the end of the day an easy pull @ 5,000 rpm, 183.4 HP, 219.3 ft. lbs of Torque, 5th gear, 200 mph plus. The dyno sounded a verbal alert, EXCEEDING LIMITS…clicked into 6th to slow the motor down, 3,500 rpm rolling at an easy 202 MPH with a 35% load on the dyno.
Hauled ass to Bikernet Headquarters.
Monday, 7/15/2013 placed a call to Horse Power Inc., Guru, Jimmy Light . By mid afternoon four Blue Band Injectors were in the mail. The Yellow band injectors are rated at 6.5, Blue Band 8.5. We’ll go into detail in following reports.
Saturday afternoon 7/20/2013 in San Jose, Ca., Ron Williams, Jeff Boddie and Dr. Willie Lanham loaded the Raycer on the Dyno for tuning with the Blue band injectors installed. The lack of fuel issue is solved at this point. Two injectors are mounted in the HPI 62 mm, two are located in the face of the air plenum for fuel to cool and feed the demand created by the Series 66 Aerocharger. Boost comes on just off of idle at 2,000 rpm., developing 8 to 10 lbs when the relief valve opens. What a relief.
We vibrated the right foot peg bolt loose, Red Loctite applied. The shifter linkage, same thing. The Battery rattled itself to pieces, but the Raycer ran smooth as silk through all six gears at all speeds.
Saturday mid afternoon blasted 6 miles to the Shorai Battery Headquarters. We now have the top of the line lightweight, massive cranking power battery.
The Shorai LFX36L3-BS12 is 17.09 lbs lighter than a lead-acid YIX 30L-BS-D.
Weighing in at 4.96 Lbs with 540 Cold Cranking Amps. The Spyle Starter spins our 124-Inch Twin Cam engine, in style without using the compression releases. Bad ASS.
Once again, Friday afternoon we’re headed to San Jose for a Saturday session. On the days schedule is easy passes for heat and time to settle the internals, seat the Total Seal Rings, check out the Shift Light, Pingel Air Shifter, etc.
Then we haul ass to Headquarters to fit the Air Tech Streamlining Body Work.
Met Rick Tedder away from the drag strip, Feb. 3, 2012 in Salem, Or. We mapped a plan on the shop floor with a piece of soap stone. On April the 15th frame pieces were delivered and the fun started.
Over the next few weeks we’ll dive into every aspect of the build starting with the all-important foundation by R/T Performance, Rick Tedder.
Until then…. stay Safe and Straight.
Thanks….With one helleva lot of help from my family and Industry friends….Thanks, Thanks, Thanks.
We’re on track for a stellar year rollin on the street and the ever slippery, never predictable Bonneville Salt Flats.

This leaves me with a very funny picture of Ray racing across the salt flats heading for the speed of sound, as parts rattle off along the way, leaving a trail of expensive, top of the line components.
Ray oblivious to the destruction occurring underneath his butt, hangs on for dear life, his only concern is to see that speedometer reach 200 plus. The faster he goes, the faster the bike disintegrates as it rattles itself slowly unwinding the very structure.
Ray just keeps going, well there is no point in stopping or even slowing down now is there? This is what he built the bike for, and this is why he is here in this hot, barren, alien place riding the Raycer across a thick crusty salt laden soil. Hanging on dearly, he nears the top speed as his bike turns into a ghost bike and he crosses the finish line with just a chassis, engine and handlebar grips which somewhere along the way melded into his hands.
Riding a ghost bike! I hope the 5-Ball Team takes a case load of Red Loctite with them!!

We’re heading westward on the Pacific Coast Highway out of Santa Barbara, blue waters of the Santa Barbara Channel spreading off the California Coast to the left and brown ramparts of the Santa Inez Range stacked high on the right, while steering a new generational design of the 2014 GMC Sierra 1500 half-ton truck.

GEORGES’S WINNING STREAK CONTINUES—
Bully Dog drivers dominate Tremonton pulls
Tremonton, UT – Bully Dog once more took to the track this past weekend, lining up to pull at the United Pullers event in Tremonton, Utah. Both the “Doctor” EcoBoost and “Blackout” Cummins were on-site and ready to hook up to the sled. Doctor driver Austin George has pulled at many events this year, including our own Dog Days of Summer and has established an extremely daunting record: he’s undefeated, taking first at every event he has entered this year.
As he hooked Doctor up to the sled, George was prepared to defend his perfect record, and many were asking the same question: could he do it again? An amazing 325’ 10” pull gave them their answer, easily and decisively putting him in first place! Bully Dog is extremely proud of George and Doctor’s accomplishments thus far, and we remain confident that George will continue to make a strong showing in the remaining pulls of the season. Go for it Austin, we’re pulling for you as you pull for us!
Chris Kendall was extremely motivated to put on a show with Blackout, especially after witnessing Doctor dominate the stock class. Ready to put Blackout to the test, Kendall was undaunted by the impressive competition lining up against him. Blackout had proved itself before and it did yet again, launching powerfully and blending a perfect mix of torque and speed to take the sled to final distance of 312’, the best of the night by six feet. The trip back home was a blast for both drivers; it’s easy to ride high with a pair of wins that decisive.

California: NRA News Video Reveals True Nature of Cal-DOJs Firearm Confiscation Program—
You Don’t Want to Miss This!
As part of their efforts to justify increased firearm purchase fees and universal gun registration nationwide, California politicians are enhancing a program that identifies people who are prohibited from possessing firearms, ammunition, ammunition components, clips, magazines, and speed loaders, and sending out teams of police to confiscate them. And with a new funding source from fees forced onto law-abiding gun purchasers, this program will be getting more aggressive. If you are unsure of your status to possess firearms, police may be knocking on your door!
California is the first and only state in the nation to build an automated system for tracking handgun and assault weapon owners who pose a threat to public safety, said a state senator from California.
“Taking guns away from dangerous, violent individuals who are prohibited by law from owning them is smart and efficient law enforcement,” said Attorney General Harris.
They call it the Armed Prohibited Persons System (APPS). Sounds great doesn’t it? Too bad the system doesn’t work that way.
As demonstrated in a video which NRA News recently released, featuring accounts from innocent victims of the APPS program, the informed critical opinions a former DOJ agent who actually took part in APPS sweeps, and firearm civil rights attorney, C.D. Michel, the APPS program is at best ineffective at getting guns from violent criminals, and at worst a campaign of civil rights violations mislabeled as crime fighting.

BIKERNET MEDICAL CENTER RECEIVES PERFECT TIMING ALERT FROM DR. WEIL–Worried About Getting Overheated? Hyperthermia, or overheating of the body, is dangerous – it can lead to heat stroke, a potentially deadly condition that can occur when the body reaches a high core temperature, usually 104 degrees Fahrenheit or higher.
There are two types of heat stroke: exertional, which affects people who work, play or exercise too vigorously in hot environments; and passive, which typically affects older people (especially those who are also sedentary) who are exposed to high temperatures. Either type of heat stroke can lead to brain damage, organ failure and even death, so prevention is key.
FIVE WAYS to prevent Heat Stroke:
Drink plenty of water
Wear light-colored, lightweight, non-restrictive clothing that allows your skin to breathe.
Know when to limit activity. If you are feeling hot or winded, slow down or rest.
When exercising, start slowly, and gradually build up duration and intensity.
Avoid alcohol in general and while exercising in particular—it promotes dehydration.

The American Legion Legacy Run and USAA join
to support Military Families–INDIANAPOLIS (August 1, 2013) – Hundreds of motorcyclists will take the concept of “veterans helping veterans” to a new level this month when The American Legion Riders kick off their eighth annual American Legion Legacy Run to raise money for the American Legion Legacy Scholarship program.
National Commander James E. Koutz will lead the American Legion Legacy Run from The American Legion national headquarters in Indianapolis to the 95th annual American Legion National Convention in Houston in August.
Motorcycle enthusiasts and supporters from all over the world will join in a rally Aug. 17 hosted by The American Legion Riders of Indiana to raise money for scholarships, which are awarded to the children of military members who have died on duty since Sept. 11, 2001. Sponsored by USAA®, The Legacy Run is the largest multistate, multiday cross-country motorcycle event in the United States.
The Riders will begin the 1,500-mile journey early Aug. 18 and travel through Indiana, Illinois, Missouri, Oklahoma and Texas. They will arrive in Houston on the afternoon of Aug. 22.
According to Koutz, the American Legion Legacy Scholarship is one way to show the Riders’ deep appreciation for those who paid the ultimate price for freedom.
“As a consequence of the war on terrorism, many children of our active-duty military personnel are now members of single-parent families,” Koutz said. “In many cases their chances to attend college have greatly diminished. These children are entitled to receive some money from the government for education, but it is not nearly enough.
“A chance to attend higher education should be a reality for these families,” Koutz said. “An education is a powerful way to show our thanks.”
Koutz encourages Riders from all points in the United States to join the Run either in Indianapolis or along the route to Houston.
“The ride will stop along the way for events arranged by Legionnaires and Legion Riders chapters along the route,” Koutz said. Plans include visits with wounded warriors, lunches and dinners hosted by local American Legion posts and a special visit with USAA dignitaries and injured warriors in Killeen, Texas.
American Legion Riders along the route play an important role planning rest stops, coordinating with law enforcement and helping with the logistics at a dozen or more refueling stops. Any person interested in registering to support the ride will receive the Run patch as well as a special mapbook with Rider travel information to include exact routes, scheduled stops, timetables, daily maps and checkpoint locations.
Koutz will personally collect donations during the Run at promotional events along the way. Upon arrival in Houston, the Riders will enjoy Texas hospitality at American Legion Post 554 in League City, Texas, before leading the National Convention Parade on August 25. The parade through downtown Houston will showcase many of The American Legion dignitaries, delegates and award recipients who will appear during the convention.
Koutz is also asking American Legion posts and Riders from all over the country to conduct a national fundraising effort on behalf of The American Legacy Scholarship Fund. Materials and information tailored specifically for Rider fundraising are available from The American Legion at the contact listed below.
Registration information is available at www.legion.org/riders. All who register will receive the Legacy Run map book, vest patch and other material. Koutz encourages all interested supporters to register, whether or not they wish to participate in the Legacy Run itself.
The registration fees will help offset the costs of the American Legion Legacy Run. Every dollar donated directly to the American Legacy Scholarship Fund will go directly to educating a fallen comrade’s son or daughter.
For more information, contact Bill Sloan, Legacy Run coordinator, PO Box 1055, Indianapolis, Indiana, 46206, tel. 317-630-1321, email wsloan@legion.org.
JEWISH POKER GAME IN THE BACK OF BANDIT’S CANTINA–Six retired Jewish Floridian fellows were playing poker in the condo clubhouse when Meyer loses $500 on a single hand, clutches his chest, and drops dead at the table.
Showing respect for their fallen comrade, the other five continue playing, but standing up.
At the end of the game, Finklestein looks around and asks, “So, who’s gonna tell his wife?”
They cut the cards. Goldberg picks the low card and has to carry the news. They tell him to be discreet, be gentle, don’t make a bad situation any worse.
“Discreet? I’m the most discreet person you’ll ever meet. Discretion is my middle name. Leave it to me.”
Goldberg goes over to the Meyer’s condo and knocks on the door. The wife answers through the door and asks what he wants? Goldberg declares: “Your husband just lost $500 in a poker game and is afraid to come home.”
“Tell him to drop dead!” yells the wife.
“I’ll go tell him.” says Goldberg.

Western Motorcycle Drag Racing Association to
Support America’s Forgotten Heroes at Sturgis— America’s Forgotten Heroes is proud to announce that the Western Motorcycle Drag Racing Association (WMDRA) will be donating a portion of gate sales from their 2013 AMSOIL Sturgis Nationals drag race August 5-6-7 during the 73rd Annual Sturgis Motorcycle Rally.
“We saw the America’s Forgotten Heroes (AFH) tribute vehicle at the Corbin Rider Appreciation Days during the Hollister Rally and were very moved by the Dog Tags of Courage Memorial inside, the airbrushed images on the outside of the vehicle and the stories behind them,” said WMDRA President Sandra Alberti. “We are honored to donate a portion of our gate sales from Sturgis to benefit AFH’s continued success.”
The America’s Forgotten Heroes tribute vehicle is a 1991 ambulance that was recently transformed into an extraordinary rolling tribute to Search and Rescue, Police and Military Working Dogs. With artwork rendered by the renowned airbrush artist, Mickey Harris, who will also be at Sturgis, and custom interior by Mike Corbin, the tribute vehicle honors and raises awareness about the invaluable service, loyalty, and sacrifices of our four-legged heroes – America’s Forgotten Heroes.
Since it’s unveiling to the public in March of 2012, the America’s Forgotten Heroes tribute vehicle has been touring and going to schools, expos, parades, law enforcement conventions, military bases and veteran and military events.

INTRODUCING THE NEW WOMEN’S VADA JACKET–Comfort Combined With Performance
Combine summer-weight comfort with performance, style and protection and you have the new Vada jacket from the Roland Sands Designs Apparel collection. Constructed of hand-finished waxed cotton, the styling cues are reminiscent of a classic enduro jacket… but there is plenty of modern day functionality incorporated within the rustic appearance.
The Vada’s waxed cotton fabric is fully breathable and totally pliable. Lighter than leather, it is also water-resistant, just in case you should encounter a quick summer shower. The relaxed fit is designed for riding and incorporates rotated pre-curved sleeves, dropped back length and a relaxed collar opening.
“We want this jacket to be more than just a fashion accessory… it needed to be comfortable whether you are wearing it on a motorcycle or just kicking back after a ride,” explains Roland Sands. “The goal was to combine lightweight comfort and performance with some style, all without forgetting our motorcycle roots.”
Additional highlights of the Vada jacket include:
Hand-finished waxed cotton shell (11.14 oz.)
Satin/poly liner with custom RSD numbers repeat design
Zip close interior chest pocket
Soft-lined electronics secure pocket
Stretch mesh cargo stuff pockets
Pockets for optional shoulder, elbow and back armor
Available in your choice of Ranger (tan) or basic Black, sizes S-2XL. MSRP is $350. Check out the teaser video for the 2013 RSD Collection vibe:

BOOK OF THE WEEK FROM FREEDOM FICTION, KARAOKE BY IIAN HERMAN—
Explore why women are attracted to bad boys
Explore what women want in a boyfriend and what they want in a husband
ISBN: 978-1-304-26305-6
http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00E4VRMAM
Excerpts from this epic crime adventure:
“There are numerous services that connect women with felons. Most are pen pals only and provide much needed distraction and hope for the incarcerated, but a fair amount also end up meeting each other and, few even become lovers.”
“The sun radiated billions of candles and the air was dry. The dead grass was crumbling. Soon the ground would swallow the once proud green blades, as the ground does to all—a cosmic sponge soaking, generously, the efforts made by God to reincarnate herself in a blade of grass, an oak tree, a human being, a DLL…no one knew the depth of God, the riddle so simple yet so complex—the agnostic flag raised to confess: ‘I know that I don’t know.’”
“You can’t always get what you want, but it you try real hard, you get what you need”
“Joey was as desperate as when he was eight and cowered under the kitchen table while his dad threw dishes at the walls (they shattered and showered the kitchen with sharp bits). He was trying, one last time, to please his father. That wasn’t going to happen because his father had been dead thirty years, yes, that’s how pathetic our attempt is to snare the past and wriggle it to fit our present….”

HOLY SHIT—This month will be packed with happenings, and I’m trying to find some moments to write a screenplay. I did rough out some notions for Mike Jones in Milwaukee. He’s a producer who is on a mission from God to create the greatest motorcycle film of all time.
Life is just so damn interesting. All of a sudden lots of folks are hooked on drugs. Maybe it has something to do with our stinkin’ economy and the doubts about our lovely government. Quick let’s do a study. But it’s fascinating how some folks will devote their lives to their missions, their family, their hot rod, building a bike for Bonneville, drag racing, or Sturgis shows. The next guy devotes all his or her time toward success, but then there are large segments of our society who can’t get going, but bitch constantly.
I joked the other day about someone who can’t put one foot in front of the other but wants to cause drama and blame everyone. I said, fuck that shit, build something, take a class, or run a marathon—do something, goddammit. As long as you have your health, why not rock and roll.
Have a helluva weekend.
Ride Forever,
