BIKERNET HEADQUARTERS INVADED THURSDAY NEWS FOR SEPT. 20, 2012

Hey,

I took a trip out to Kendon Trailers the other day. What an amazing story of survival through harsh circumstances. Almost every private company faces economic downturns, technological changes, upheaval in our society, bad partners, drugs you name it.

If you are a long-term employee, and your life and employment has remained consistent, you are lucky and should thank the owner, if he managed to hold it all together. Too often holding a business together is tantamount to going to war and often the employees don’t see the crisis until they receive a pink slip.

Kendon builds purely American Made trailers, although their lifts are currently built overseas, but that may change. They survived the economic downturn and tough business decisions, but are now stronger than ever. Over the months ahead we will study their stand-up trailer line, their lifts, and their new ride up trailer. They are the only company that builds trailers and lifts you can stand up, save a ton of space and shove in the corner for next time. Let’s hit the news:

NEW BIKERNET READER COMMENT–5-Ball Racing 2012: Chapter 11 the Finale:

Hell of a story, I would have never believed that after selling you that basket case 45 Bandit some six years later I see it (or should I say part of it?) end up being in that shape and form.

All these years of reading in print a now digital about the many bikes you’ve built I never get tired of seeing them go from mind to reality.

The time honored garage-built madness that infects so many of us, goes clear thru to your heart ‘n’ soul and is what keeps me coming back for more.

— Tom Kellerstrass

SCARY SHIT HAPPENING ALL OVER THE WORLD– The dream of having your car drive you home is on the verge of getting a major boost. As early as January of next year, California may join Nevada in legalizing the use of autonomous cars, potentially allowing “drivers” to read the paper or catch up on e-mails on the way to the office.

But a consumer advocacy organization warns that the cars could do more than that, collecting personal information that could be shared with others, and is asking for a gubernatorial veto of the bill approving them, which was passed by the state legislature in August.

Ride Safe. Ride Free. Ride Smart. Ride Today.

SPEED CAMERAS COULD BE ANYWHERE–  As drivers become more savvy about spotting speed cameras along roads and highways, police are making it tougher by disguising their revenue-generating equipment. Authorities in and around Washington D.C. are expanding their speed camera programs, reports the Washington Examiner, and now they’re purchasing cameras that look like mailboxes and trash containers to unsuspecting motorists. They’re also more mobile, so police can reposition them so drivers cannot get used to seeing them in one particular area.

Nearby Prince George’s County in Maryland purchased nearly 60 mobile cameras last year, and expects to generate $28 million in annual revenue, reports the news outlet. A similar speed-camera program in D.C. generated $55 million in fiscal year 2011.

Meanwhile, the traffic-camera debate has ignited state and local governments across the country: some embrace camera-based technology as a cost-efficient law-enforcement and safety tool; others cast it off as an overly intrusive money grab.

Watch for the full Coast to Coast Legislative Report from AIM to be launched tomorrow on Bikernet.

BIKERNET MEDICAL CENTER ENTRANCE EXAM–When I was young, my intention was to go to medical school. The entrance exam included several questions that would determine eligibility.
One of the questions was “Rearrange the letters P N E S I to spell out an
important part of the human body that is more useful when it is erect.”

Those who spelled “SPINE” became Doctors. The rest ended up in Congress.

SARA PARK RIDE–It was a wonderful ride up to Tomahawk WI from Antigo, where I live, on Saturday 9/15.
Me on my 2001 Nightrain and the wife on her 2008 Nightster and long time friends and new Harley owners on their 2002 Heritage.

I’ve been to Sturgis and sure the Fall ride doesn’t compare, but for a small town in northern WI they do a good job. Went to Sara Park for lunch and some entertainment. Walked through the vendors and just enjoyed the picture perfect fall day. We then went up to main street to check out the bikes.

This year the rally organizers decided to finally close down main street to auto traffic and let the bikes park down the center of the lanes ala Sturgis. Way bigger turnout this year downtown on main street. We ran into old friends and had a great time BS’ing and breaking balls about each others bikes.

It was real cool because as we were heading home we met former Senator Dave Zien
at the Hwy 86 intersection on his trike. We gave him a thumbs up and it was good to see him riding again.

Just wanted to drop you a line about the fall ride and also tell you that I really enjoy Bikernet!
Keep up the good work and ride on…

FROM THE KRYLON JOHN FILING CABINET–I was going to send you some photos of my latest abstract paintings when I realized I haven’t done a painting since early last January. I’ve been invited back to David Mann Chopperfest to exhibit my art, so I’ll knock out some fresh stuff by next December.

Right now there’s just a few filthy motorcycles, and some unframed art waiting for my attention in the studio… Studio, who am I kidding, that’s my living room.

To celebrate my 60th birthday I thought maybe a suicide mission might be in order. Early last August, I flew into Jacksonville, FL picked up a chopped ’30 Model A, and drove it over 4,000 miles across the US in record heat. I didn’t mind the heat, so much as the exhaust fumes.

On the trip I visited friends. While I was in Chattanooga, TN. Corky Coker took half the day off to show me around his place, and insisted the crew at the Honest Charley Speed Shop garage put the A up in the air and give it a safety check, its nice to have friends like that.

They filled it’s ’54 Chrysler Hemi with Champion oil. I think that’s pretty good stuff, the oil pressure never dropped, and I only used a quart the entire trip.

Here’s the coupe ready to roll out of Chattanooga. I stayed the night in Kentucky, and made it the next day to Lincoln NE, where I visited Speedy Bill, and Damon Lee. Damon was the editor of Custom Rodder during the time I was editing Custom Classic Trucks. That was the good old days in Placentia, CA.

While in Chattanooga, we swapped Coker bias-ply Firestones for Coker Excelsior radials, what an incredible tire that is.

The yellow Panhead is something Corky found while shooting his new TV show Barn Finds for the Speed Channel. I want to, but haven’t seen the show yet.

Sorry about the blurry photography, my Canon 50D got banged around pretty good on this trip. I think it might be time for a camera tune-up. The night shot is at the Knight’s Inn in Cadiz, KY. That’s how far I made it that night after I left Chattanooga. The food bar was stale, but I highly recommend the coffee at the Shoney’s in Murfreesboro, TN. it sent me clear through Nashville all the way to Kentucky.

NEW LEGISLATION FROM THE EPA–  It is strongly suggested that all motorcycle riders contact their legislators about this issue.  It could be even more worse to those small tanks. What do you do with the fuel you are forced to pay for but won’t fit in tank?

“Representative Jim Sensenbrenner (R., Wis.) has a post on the Hill’s Congress Blog highlighting a bizarre new regulation from the EPA requiring some gas stations to sell at least four gallons of gasoline at a time. It affects those that pump both E10 and E15 through the same hose.

It’s a historic moment for the EPA, though, as they’ve never actually forced people to buy anything before. ‘The EPA’s first-ever mandated purchase requirement appears to have been conceived outside the normal regulatory process,’ Sensenbrenner wrote, ‘making?this unprecedented government over-reach even more offensive.’

It’s a great example of how ugly things get when unelected bureaucrats involve?themselves in the most minute decisions of individuals, like how much gas they want to buy and whether or not they want to have corn in it. —National Review’s Betsy Woodruff

The latest mandate handed down from the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is so ridiculous, even I was shocked. The EPA has now mandated how much gasoline you must buy at certain gas stations. Say hello to the Obama Administration’s four gallon minimum. This unprecedented EPA overreach applies when filling up at a gas station that provides both E15 and E10, gasoline with 15 or 10 percent of ethanol, respectively, from the same hose.

At the insistence of the ethanol industry, the Obama Administration is pushing E15 into the marketplace, regardless of the serious concerns about the fuel’s impact on drivers. From its inception, E15 is a study in the consequences of government interference in the marketplace.

The EPA’s decision to set a minimum purchase requirement is just the most recent example. If this seems too far-fetched to be true, here is what the EPA recently wrote in a letter to the American Motorcyclist Association:

“EPA requires that retail stations that own or operate blender pumps either dispense E15 from a dedicated hose and nozzle if able or, in the case of E15 and E10 being dispensed from the same hose, require that at least four gallons of fuel be purchased to prevent vehicles and engines with smaller fuel tanks from being exposed to gasoline-ethanol blended fuels containing greater than 10 volume percent ethanol.”

The EPA approved E15 for sale in the U.S. using a partial waiver, meaning it is only approved for some vehicles on the road — cars 2001 and later. Most of our gasoline contains only 10 percent ethanol. Increasing the ethanol content will harm older vehicles and it is downright dangerous for small engines like those found in boats, lawnmowers, or motorcycles. E15 is like metal in a microwave for a small engine.

The Obama Administration’s attempt to solve the serious concern of misfueling is more government regulation. By requiring a minimum purchase of four gallons of E10 gas, the Administration hopes to dilute the amounts of E15 undoubtedly left in the shared hose and prevent the fuel from ruining small engines or endangering Americans using these devices.

This type of government meddling is completely contradictory to our free market principles, and it is a dangerous precedent to set. If the government has the power to mandate a minimum amount of gas we can buy, what else can they mandate??? The EPA’s first-ever mandated purchase requirement appears to have been conceived outside the normal regulatory process, making this unprecedented government overreach even more offensive.

Americans deserve to know how a federal agency has the power to do this. I have requested that the EPA explain their authority for this mandate. Additionally, the very effectiveness of this heavy-handed regulation is questionable. Many motorcyclists may be stumped when attempting to fill up their bike that doesn’t even have the capacity to hold four gallons.

Other Americans will try unsuccessfully to fill up a one or two gallon fuel can with E10 to take it home and use in their outboard boat engine or?lawnmower. Even worse, what will happen when they take the fuel home, tainted with E15, and overheat their snow blower???

In Wisconsin, where we get an average of four feet of snow per year, imagine the frustration of ruining an expensive snow blower only to find that the E15 unequivocally voided the warranty. This unprecedented, ill-conceived mandate is an example of the worst kind of government interference. It both squashes the free market and will inevitably fail to help those it claims to protect. However, the Obama Administration does successfully do one thing: highlight the E15 partial waiver as completely unworkable.

SUPER-RARE 1926 BROUGH SUPERIOR SS100 ALPINE GRAND SPORTS ?TO GO UNDER THE HAMMER AT RM’S LONDON AUCTIONLONDON– (20 September 2012) – RM Auctions is to offer a 1926 Brough Superior SS100 Alpine Grand Sports, one of the world’s rarest and most collectible motorcycles. The machine (pictured left), frame number 820A, was despatched by the Brough Superior works on 21st January 1926 to Frank Hallam, the Brough Superior agent in Birmingham, United Kingdom, and it was first registered on 22nd August 1926.

Its ownership is well-known, and it was listed in the inaugural Brough Superior Club register in 1964. The bike will go under the hammer at RM Auctions’ upcoming London sale at Battersea Evolution, 31st October 2012.

The early SS100 Alpine Grand Sports model is internationally celebrated as the motorcycle made famous by the legendary British soldier T. E. Lawrence, better known as “Lawrence of Arabia”, an avid Brough Superior collector, owning more than five examples in his lifetime.

Indeed, the two bikes—Lawrence’s 808A and the example on offer—are only twelve frame numbers apart, almost certainly making frame number 820A the nearest surviving matching-numbers example to T. E. Lawrence’s bike.

Totally correct and fully documented, it boasts a complete recorded history from the 1930s and was the recipient of a recent, professional restoration by marque experts, the quality of which was recognized via the Baragwanath Trophy for the Best JAP-Engined SS100 at the 2010 annual Brough Superior Club Rally (Estimate: £250,000–£300,000).

Another significant bike to be offered alongside the Brough Superior at next month’s London sale is an enormously desirable 1952 Vincent Series C Black Shadow (pictured right). Frame number RC 11466 B/B is a matching-numbers machine, first registered in October 1952 and has enjoyed just four owners from new.

Much like the SS100 in period, the Black Shadow was considered the “king of the road” when it was introduced, representing British motorcycling at its finest.

The bike has been subject to a full photographic restoration and has been the focus of a magazine feature, as well as being twice voted the Best Twin at the Vincent Owner’s Club rallies. The estimate for this wonderful British bike is £65,000–£75,000.

For full event details on RM’s upcoming London sale or to view a frequently updated list of auction entries, visit www.rmauctions.com or contact RM London at +44 20 7851 7070.

RICK TALKS ABOUT 3 STOOGES & SPARTACUS–Rick and Joe T are yet again to discuss life. Joe tries to explain the European markets to Rick. Rick counters with talk about the Three Stooges and Spartacus.

The two discuss their hamster trip and the Sturgis bike rally. As usually there is a little golf talk. Rick talks about the Kyle Petty Charity ride.

SNOW WHITE MEETS A GIRL–“What kind of bike is that?” I looked up from my workbench. A young girl stood gawking at Snow White parked just outside my garage doors. I tell her it is a custom built “Harley.” She smiles telling me her dad rides a RoadGlide. She moves around the bike at a respectful distance. She asks about this and that saying that it is a really nice bike. I ask if her dad is taking her on the Moose Jaw Motorcycle Association Toy Run this Saturday. She beams with excitement.

They bought a teddy bear bigger then she is, a brown one to offer up to the Toy Run drive. She’ll have to ride to make sure it doesn’t fall off the tour pack. I assure her that the needy child who gets it for Christmas will be very excited. She smiles a little more. In that moment I think she realizes how fortunate she is.

The road ties us together into a tight knit community. We’ve traveled the good miles when the sun is shining, our machines are running strong and the road sweeps to and fro. We’ve traveled the bad miles when the skies have opened up drenching freezing rain, snow, sleet and hail stones the size of baseballs when there is no shelter, no mercy.

It’s a connection to nature, a freedom, that only comes on two wheels. We stop when a brother is broken down on the side of the road, we huddle holding a tarp or blanket over our heads laughing at the falling rain, sharing what little shelter we have, sharing what stories we have of when it was really bad. It is that sense of giving, sharing, rolling with the punches that let us give back to our communities.

Today when so many people take that freedom for granted we are out there donating blood, toys or just our time. It is a sense of duty, of honor that we install into our children, to be generous with what we have even when we have little ourselves.

The little girl thanked me for letting her look at my motorcycle before skipping down the alleyway towards her home, her sense of giving, her sense of motorcycle community awakened.

BIKERNET READER COMMENT–S&S Twin Cam Gear Drive Set Installed

http://www.bikernet.com/pages/story_detail.aspx?id=1800

This article is awesome. It will be used exclusively when I change my stock cams and chain out this winter. I’ve wanted to do this for two years now since 2010, when I first saw the gear drive exhibit at the S&S booth at Sturgis.

The only problem I anticipate is the re-mapping of my Vance and Hines fuelpack to accomodate the changes of the new cam lifts and durations. Have to purchase the JIM’s tools as well.

Velocity, the network for the upscale male audience, is rebuilding the popular car franchise OVERHAULIN’ and bringing it back to viewers this October. Featuring the leader in car restoration Chip Foose, the all-new OVERHAULIN’ is set to unveil incredible one-of-a-kind automotive transformations to several lucky and well-deserving car owners. The new and improved OVERHAULIN’ premieres October 2 at 9PM ET/PT on Velocity.

Foose, who is revered by gearheads worldwide, is known for combining creativity, technology and ingenuity, when restoring classic cars resulting in some of the most unique and breathtaking vehicles anywhere. However, the all-new OVERHAULIN’ goes beyond the garage, exploring engaging human stories and the strong emotional connection between man and machine. In each episode of OVERHAULIN’ viewers will watch Chip and his build team as they makeover worn-out automobiles into works of art. The restoration projects feature deserving individuals ranging from returning veterans to those negatively impacted by the tough economy. Each altered auto becomes a life-changing surprise for its unknowing owner.

In addition to Foose, the OVERHAULIN’ team includes some of the most talented design professionals anywhere. Longtime collaborator and co-host Chris Jacobs returns to help lead an automotive dream team in the garage. Jacobs and Foose are joined by fabrication and restoration expert Jessi Combs, who is also one of the hosts of the Velocity series ALL GIRL GARAGE.

OVERHAULIN’ is produced for VELOCITY by WATV Productions. Lenny Shabes and Chip Foose are executive producers. David Lee is executive producer for Velocity.

ANOTHER FILM EFFORT, THE LAST AMERICAN OUTLAW– I’m making a film about George Christie entitled: The Last American Outlaw. We’re at the final stages of the edit and he suggested I reach out for assistance.

When George is explaining how various clubs found their identities he explains that it often came down to the design of bike you were attracted to. How the design of the customized bike you rode could indicated what neighborhood you were from.

As an example I wanted to show some designs of customized bikes from the ‘60s and ‘70s.

We’re looking for about 10-12 photographs that we could work with. There is no budget for this as such, but we would most certainly credit both the photographer and designer.

These pictures would eventually be blown up really really big, so higher resolution is required, or we could work off of prints and I could scan them.

WE ARE HEADING INTO LAS VEGAS BIKEFEST WEEK—I’m still trying to decide whether to haul out one or two bikes. Tobey and Ray C. Wheeler may need the Kendon trailer, but maybe not. I haven’t heard. Kendon discovered another use for their trailers beyond hauling custom bikes to shows, or race bikes to events. They have noticed folks enhancing their family motorcycle experience by trailering their bikes out of town with the family, say from a city like Los Angeles to Flagstaff, then being able to ride around the Grand Canyon while the family enjoys shopping in town.

More on Kendon products to come in the very near future. On Friday I will post the Bill Bish Legislative report including mandated fluorescent vests in Australia. When will governments wake up and put freedom in the mix anytime they discuss safety issues. A lot of us would fight to the death for freedom.

Next, I have a Softail Slim road report from Doc. Folks are turning in Softails for Dynas and baggers. The market is constantly changing. I have BDL techs coming, another chapter of Chance II, the Vincent Girl of Bikernet, and a Spitfire Bike Feature. Oh, and we have a digital discovery from the Murph in the Neatherlands. Hang on.

Ride Forever,

–Bandit
