BIKERNET NO NONSENSE THURSDAY NEWS

Hey,

Another amazing week in Paradise. You wouldn’t believe it, if I tried to explain, but if it unfolds you’ll be the first to know, after the Cantina Members get the first glimpse.

Big News this week is the Advanstar run to build their Indy dealer show this year. In the likes of a poor economic year they are trying to split the industry even more by trying to build on their successful motorcycle dealer show by pulling business from the Cincy show. It’s a battle between the Indy show and the Easyriders V-Twin show. It’s an arm wrestling contest between Hamsters, Grady, with the Indy show against the longtime boss of the Easyriders Cincy show, Jim Betlach, also a Hamster.

We will bring you more reports as the saga unfolds. If you think that’s interesting, get this from the Week Magazine: Kids going to summer camp in Maryland must get parental permission to wear sunscreen. Officials banned camp counselors from applying 15 to 30 weight, out of concern for inappropriate touching. Let’s hit the news. I’m still reeling from a six hour meeting yesterday at the House of Hayden bar in Long Beach.

* Peanut oil is used for cooking in submarines because it doesn’t smoke unless it’s heated above 450°F
* The roar that we hear when we place a seashell next to our ear is not the ocean, but rather the sound of blood surging through the veins in the ear.

BIG LOLA OLD CAR SHOW IN LOLA, WISCONSIN COVERED BY BIKERNET’S GOOD MAN–I went to the big Iola Old Car Show in Iola, Wis., this weekend (with my 1926 Ford T), where there’s about 300 acres of swap. Shot a couple of bikes for you.

First, a pair of restored 165s, a black and white1958 and a red 1954 that had this cool bronze 50th Anniversary badge on the front fender.

Next, this vintage Flathead chopper. Seller says its a 1942 WA but I don’t know those engines well enough to say he’s right. Says he pulled it out of a barn a few years ago and had to make some repairs, but it kicked right over and sounded good at the show. I could not get that guy in the Guzzi shirt to get off the bike to let me take a better photo.

MANDATORY ABS set for GERMAN motorcycles Legislation to come into effect from 2017–ACCORDING to German component suppliers, Bosch, ABS looks set to become mandatory on all machines from 2017.

European Parliament is likely to sanction the legislation before they break for their summer recess at the end of July. The imminent decision follows a long consultation process with industry bodies, manufacturers and trade associations.

It’s expected that the law will insist that all new 125cc+ motorcycles manufactured after 2017 will have to be fitted with OE ABS braking systems in a bid to increase rider safety.

NEW ENTRY LEVEL MOTORCYCLES FROM ATK–When the clock strikes four, the freeways start to fill up with commuters on wheels causing massive traffic delays that add undue stress to your daily grind by wasting hours of valuable time and money on gas that is barely affordable in these economic times!

“The ATK GT250R maybe the way,” says Christina Silva of CSR safe riding web site.
She seemed to like the new 250 cc naked model. She plans to test ride it this weekend to the LA Calendar show at the Queen Mary where ATK will be set up.

Let’s see….. isn’t CA already bankrupt?– Taxpayers get hosed!! Soaked!! Take a bath!!! You mean to tell me they can’t get their bikes washed for less than $5600?? What wasteful spending!!

Newport Beach cops get $5,600 to wash their motorcycles

It pays well to wash your motorcycle if you are a cop in Newport Beach, where officers who patrol on motor bikes are paid an additional six hours of overtime every month simply for giving their cycles a wash. The special compensation equates to, on average, about a 5 percent pay hike for motorcycle officers, or about $5,600 a year in additional monies, according to an analysis of city documents and interviews with key city staff.

As alarming as that may seem, this is only one example of special pay that inflates salaries and is often hidden from public view because of the stealth nature of negotiations.

The sweet deal is part of the contract negotiated between the police union and the city – yet another creative example of public employee pay abuses at taxpayer expense.

Here’s how the payout is described in a 2010-2011 memorandum of understanding between the city of Newport Beach and the Newport Beach Police Association: “Assigned Motor Officers are responsible for keeping the motorcycle assigned to him/her cleaned and polished at all times. This work shall be performed outside of the regularly scheduled work hours; and compensated at the rate of six (6) additional hours overtime per month (six (6) hours at time and one half equals 9 hours compensation).”

One might assume that keeping equipment clean should be part of basic job functions, but in the world of public employees, where seemingly everything is negotiable, that is not the case.

Getting to the bottom of exactly the amount of money each motor officer is paid for washing his/her bike was problematic because the city only provided a broad look at motor officer salary information instead of specifics in salary, overtime and special pay for each of the eight motor officers and the one motor sergeant. Newport Beach ought to have this information at its fingertips and accessible online.

Nevertheless, if you take the average annual pay of a police officer in the traffic division at $109,139, then divide it by 2,080 work hours in a year, the hourly rate is $52. So overtime (related to cleaning motorcycles) would be $468 a month or $5,616 a year. That’s the equivalent of a 5.1 percent pay raise. There are a number of categories of special pay including: being bilingual, having a master’s degree, a commercial drivers license, fire mechanic certification, etc. (These special pays begin to add up.)

Newport Beach Police Chief Jay Johnson said that the way we calculated these figures would get us to “just about” the right number. He noted that all special pay is included in the city’s annual pay documents that I used to do the calculations.

Newport Beach police officers, motorcycle officers included, are already well compensated. Many of them are budgeted to make over $175,000 a year in total compensation and have lavish pension benefits that promise 90 percent of salary after 30 years of work, allowing for retirement at as early as age 50. And they can take home even more in overtime pay. There is no need to further game the system with gimmicks like pay for washing motorcycles.

Until such abuses are addressed – by reviews, by sunshine, by open negotiations — taxpayers will continue to be surprised, and continue to take a bath.

BIKERNET UNIVERSITY ENGLISH DEPARTMENT WORD OF THE DAY–
assay a-SEY, verb:

1. To examine or analyze.
2. In metallurgy, to analyze (an ore, alloy, etc.) in order to determine the quantity of gold, silver, or other metal in it.
3. To attempt; try.

The basic information will come from computers, but men, not machines, will assay its meaning before airing it.
— “TV gets ready for the election,” Kiplinger’s Personal Finance, April 1968

He sat down on one of the park benches to assay his release, to scan the landscape of his dishonorable freedom.
— Henry Roth, Diving Rock on the Hudson

Assay stems from Middle French, a variation on essay.

MUDFLAP GIRL GEARING ADVICE FROM BAKER DRIVETRAINS AND WHISTLESTOP TOURS–

22-51 with normal 37-24 primary is 3.57, pretty lively! In 6th (.86)
you would have 3.07

23-51 37-24 gives 3.42 and 2.94 in 6th. I think that’s where I’d start.

To compare, most stock late models with 70/32 belt and 36/25 primary are
3.15 overall in 5th.

It’s nice to be slightly below 3.0 in 6th for 75 mph cruising. If it’s a
stoplight burner, go the other way.

Baker will be set up in Sturgis on Lazelle performing installs. If you would like your 5-speed modified into a 6-speed, or a special Baker oil pan added to your dresser, set up an appointment soon, and tell ’em Bikernet sent ya.

“It doesn’t” said the dentist, “but it’s going to give you something to hold on to when I pull your tooth”.

BIKERNET TECH QUESTION OF THE WEEK– I bought a new 2007 Thunder Mountain / Firestone w Jim’s 120B and 6 – speed transmission right side drive. I was told by Harley dealer that I didn’t have a Harley engine, so it would hurt my value of the bike. He suggested i might have a S&S engine, even though it has Screamin Eagle logo on the heads. Is the engine and transmission Harley with a JIMS kit inside or something else. Can you send me a little history behind the engine and drive chain.

— Ray

Just to shed a little light on your questions. The motor you have is a JIMS 120 B motor. We sold them to Thunder Mountain for quite some time. It’s a high end motor, that’s even listed in the Screamin Eagle catalog. We produce this engine, along with others under a license agreement with H-D.

Basically these are 7K dollar engines, and many would consider it to add value.

This same motor is used in the Confederate B120 – a VERY high end motorcycle.

The engines were ‘de-tuned’ for emission compliance, and I would recommend cams, open exhaust and possibly a larger throttle body down the road. It would also need re-mapping, as again, the map is a compliant map.

Of course, I can only recommend the above changes for race track use only. I trust this makes sense?

BLACK MARKET BOOK DEAL OF THE WEEK, Body Painting!– So you think your job sucks. Every day you dread going to work. One thought continually runs through your mind: “there has got to be a better F-ing way to make a living.”

Well, it turns out there is – Body Painting! Don’t laugh. At every major event, from Sturgis to Laconia, from Spring Break to Fantasy Fest, there are booths and more booths where women pay money to have their tattas and various other body parts painted by talented (and not so talented) airbrush artists.

All you need is a cheap airbrush, various colors of non-toxic paint, and this fine book – Body Painting – from Wolfgang Publications.

Like most Wolfgang books, this one includes ten, start-to-finish body painting sequences. Learn from the people who do this every day; exactly which paint to use, how to pick a clever design and how to “mask off” one part of the body from another.

There’s a complete section that explains your options when it comes time to buy paint. There’s even one painting sequence that doesn’t even require an airbrush.

Let Wolfgang and Bikernet supply you with this wealth of information and how-to body painting tricks. With 600 photos Body Painting is guaranteed to be both informative and entertaining! Yes, this is the book you need to leave that dead-end job behind. Just walk up to the boss and recite those immortal words from Johnny Paycheck. Once you’re out on the street, you have no choice. Go home and buy this Wolfgang book for only $17.95 from Bikernet, with free shipping to continental US addresses, and start your new career. Don’t wait, there’s still time to get a booth in Sturgis, and Fantasy Fest is the third week in October.

PLASTIC OVER METAL?– The metal over plastic debate has been raging for years between Harley riders and metric cruisers but a recent comment left me scratching my head. The dispute was on a bagger forum that I lurk from time to time and it was hot and heavy but I was stopped when a Harley owner proudly proclaimed that “You’ll never find a piece of plastic on a Harley. Never have, never will.”

It is a bold statement but as I said this was a bagger website and the commentor’s signature listed owning a 09 Ultra and a RoadGlide. No plastic? Perhaps he was splitting hairs between polycarbonates and isomer composites and the million other different composites but few would argue that they are not plastics.

Yes, the FatBoy is all steel but the touring bikes have long been covered in plastic, maybe not to the extent of Goldwings but still nicely covered. To say Harley never uses plastics is very near sighted. Yes, there are skilled sheet metal workers who could pound out the beautiful complex curves of an ElectraGlide but why would you?

In my mind there is nothing better then cold hard steel to be sprayed, dripped, and powdered. Chromed and candies are the way to go when building a bike. But plastics have come a long way and chroming plastic has certainly advanced since the peeling chrome on the dash of my 66 Ford Galaxie hard top. Imagine steering an ElectraGlide with a heavy metal batwing, or hard case metal bags like the BMW riders bolt on.

No, the plastics we find on Harleys today offer form and function without the weight and corrosion of metals.

Plastic is the way of the future; the intake on my decade old half ton is plastic. I wouldn’t be surprised to see a lot more plastic on the next generation of Harley-Davidson as they try to reach tighter emissions and weight reductions.

Vrods already have plastic fuel tanks and it would take very little for the “tank” air intake to be in plastic (check out the muscle). Composite intakes are the norm in automobiles and will be on bikes sooner rather then later and now that the inner primary is no longer a structural part that will follow. As for those chrome metal engine covers, only time will tell.

THE LAST ISSUE OF BARNETT’S MAGAZINE HEADS TO THE STANDS–
The November/December 2011 edition of Barnett’s Magazine will be our 79th and last issue in paper. It has been a great fourteen-year run for all of us and I certainly enjoyed putting together each and every issue. We plan to go out with a bang and have 14 killer feature bikes for our Collectors Edition final issue.

We will print extra copies as we expect about 20% more sales than average. To all of you who’ve read our magazine regularly or advertised with us, we have enjoyed your company. Going forward we will call the publication barnettsmagazine.com and move some of the paper staff to assist the online staff. Our online version of the magazine has been up and running for 20 months now, growing from 30,000 visits a month to 80,000 in that time.

We see this as the future for Barnett’s Magazine and will have very low priced advertising available online. We are planning our 2012 rate card right now and the pricing will be aggressively low. I do a fair amount of online advertising for Barnett Harley-Davidson and know my impression and click through numbers per dollar. I will make sure that my online magazine offers a good bang for the buck.

Music Lovers Head to the Hills for 18th Annual Idyllwild Jazz in the Pines Set for August 27 -28–Three stages of live music and more!
Event proceeds benefit Idyllwild Arts Academy and Summer Arts Program

(Idyllwild, CA – July 13, 2011) Assembling a stellar line-up of jazz – traditional straight-ahead, smooth contemporary, Latin jazz, bebop, big band, blues, pop, and all nuances in between – is a daunting task for any festival. Jazz, the very nature of the word, is an enigma that conjures up different meanings to anyone asked. While jazz may be difficult to define, its origin is one of the most sought-after word origins in modern American English.

And yet, in true “melting pot” style, this year’s 18th annual Idyllwild Jazz in the Pines brings together the diverse styles of America’s only true indigenous music for two days of family-friendly musical excitement on Saturday, August 27 and Sunday, August 28, on the campus of the Idyllwild Arts Academy, 52500 Temecula Road, Idyllwild, CA 92549.

“Our lineup this year is one of the most diverse,” says Bubba Jackson, Idyllwild Jazz in the Pines talent booker and KKJZ FM88.1 on-air personality. “We have something for every jazz taste, and the price is so reasonable. I’m thinking beautiful music for beautiful people on a beautiful weekend in the San Jacinto Mountains of California. One of my personal commitments in jazz radio is to give back to the community. The proceeds of this event will help raise scholarship money to help students at this incredible school. It is an honor to be a part of the team that believes in keeping art alive in America!”

Located in southern California’s San Jacinto Mountains, two hours east of Los Angeles, the Idyllwild Jazz in the Pines offers festival-goers live jazz in three outdoor venues: Holmes Amphitheatre (“Main Stage”), Stephens Recital Hall (“The Barn”), and the French Quarter, plus the festivities also include winding pathways lined with various arts and crafts booths, “Dine in the Pines” food vendors, alongside sponsor and informational booths.

Regularly priced tickets are $65.00 per day ($120.00 for both days), featuring more than 25 live performances. Children under 12 are free if accompanied by a paying adult. Gates open at 10:00 a.m., the music begins at 10:30 a.m. Free parking with shuttles running continuously between the center of town and clearly designated lots; parking on the campus is limited to VIP ticket holders and the handicapped only. Tickets are available on the website: www.idyllwildjazz.com.

CUSTOM CHROME EUROPE “Bolt On and Ride” Touring Tip 2011–  50 Years of Berlin Wall

Some stories are just too big to publish them in the magazines: In July 2010, “Motographer” Horst Roesler travelled the German capital – not for the first time – on Custom Chrome Europe’s “Street Glide” Bagger to the most scenic and historical points of Berlin. August 13th
2011 will see the 50th Anniversary of the creation of the Berlin Wall – and it will be in the headline news worldwide.

What is really left of the Wall in Berlin – and what else to see in the pulsating German Capital – when visiting it on a Harley-Davidson or Custombike – can be read in this 21-page touring report.

Furthermore, the multiline dealers who cross over to metric as well as the American V-Twin will benefit from the synergy of experiencing two separate environments under the umbrella of one industry show,” said Jay Goldstein, CFO, Tucker Rocky/Biker’s Choice.

Holger Mohr, President and CEO of Custom Chrome, another anchor partner said, “Given the quickly changing landscape of the V-Twin community, containing costs and maximizing investment is vitally important to every business decision we make. By choosing to align Custom Chrome with the American V-Twin Dealer Show, I am confident we can not only achieve this goal, but also reach a broader buying audience.

The 2012 Dealer Expo will take place at the Indiana Convention Center, 1000 South Capitol Ave, in Indianapolis, IN, from February 17-19, 2012. For more information please visit www.dealerexpo.com.

BIKERNET CORRESPONDENT FROM NEW ORLEANS HEADS TO SOUTH CAROLINA TO VISIT SON– I had a good run to South Carolina to see my son, 700 mile day each way, bike ran perfect. Cyclesmith bagger high bars are super comfortable, weather was hot as you know, saw your Mississippi burn out area – that some scorched earth you laid down, I got in three whitewater trips with my son before I had to head home.

We rafted the Chatooga River which was featured in the movie “Deliverance.”
I fitted the FLHT with 13.5″ Cyclesmith Bagger Bars and a LA Choppers Cable kit before the trip. Chose the LA Choppers Kit as it had Barnett cables and Goodridge brake lines.

I am 5′ 6″ short and they fit me perfect. Really comfortable. Rode straight thru 700 miles each way. Stopped every couple hours and rehydrated.
I used the old road trick of soaking my t-shirt fully with water and then riding. The t-shirt would dry out in about 30 minutes, as it did it would cool me off and keep me alert.

Lot of crap in the road, tire pieces, ice chests and lumber. That debris will kill ya if you are not on top of your game at 75 mph. What really made me wonder was the lack of other bikes. I saw a few crotch rockets in New Orleans and Atlanta. That was it. In 1400 miles didn’t see another tour bike headed in my direction or at the rest areas. What’s the story on that?

The FLHT is a 2005 with a 95″ Wiseco kit, Andrews 27 cams, Samson mufflers and modified CV carb. Mobil V-Twin 20w-50 synthetic. Speed was between 70 and 80 mph and averaged 40 mpg burning 93 octane fuel.

Had a good time, I got to ride more.

Brough shakes the salt with Ace Cafe London!–Ace Cafe London is thrilled and privileged to be able to confirm being part of the Brough Superior Team heading out in August to the famous Bonneville salt flats, Utah, USA with a motorcycle based on the iconic 1927 SS100, a machine sharing heritage and fame with a Col. T.E. Lawrence – “Lawrence of Arabia”.

Brough were last “on the salt” in 1949 with a streamlined machine ridden and crashed by Noel Pope – he vowed to “Never ride a streamline motorcycle again”.

Racing at Bonneville 2011, unstreamlined and with a specially tuned JAP V-Twin engine running on “pump” fuel, the new Brough Superior SS100 Retro is the direct responsibility of Brough’s head of engineering Alastair Gibson, formerly chief mechanic at Honda F1 and with whom a Honda F1 car broke Bonneville records in 2006.

Mark Upham, CEO of Brough Superior Motor Cycles Ltd, confirms that Brough’s works rider at Bonneville is the British “salt” veteran Eric Patterson who, in 2008, set and broke records on his JAP engined Cafe Racer style Triumph Norton Special.

Made in England & Racing in America!

Yes! I have also attached a picture of Eric Patterson, who will be the Brough’s pilot at Bonneville, taken when he was on the salt in 2008 on his JAP-engined Triumph Norton Special.

BIKERNET MOVIE REVIEW–A Lonely Place For Dying Ranked 1,222 On IMDb

This is the great, not yet released, movie trailer I watched on June 10th flying from Milwaukee to LA. It took fourteen firsts in film festivals. Justin Evans moved to Milwaukee seven months ago and completed this movie for $200,000.00.

Justin also recently invented a revolutionary new movie camera.

You can learn more about Justin Evans by going to www.imdb.com and typing in his name. He is a writer, producer and director. Let me know if you want to be connected with him or contact him directly.

BIKERNET INVESTMENT ADVICE– If you had purchased $1,000 ofshares in Delta Airlines one year ago, you would have $49.00 today!

If you had purchased $1,000 ofshares in AIG one year ago, you would have $33.00 today.

If you had purchased $1,000 ofshares in Lehman Brothers one year ago, you would have $0.00 today.

But, if you had purchased $1,000 worth of beer one year ago, drank all the beer, then turned in the aluminum cans for the recycling refund, you would have received $214.00.

Based on the above, the best current investment plan is to drink heavily & recycle. It is called the 401-Keg.

Makes you damned proud to be an American!

DICEY NEWS ABOUNDS–It’s tough when two friends in the industry go head to head, like these two dealer shows. I was around for the start of the V-Twin Show with Easyriders. We kicked off that show, because the V-Twin industry was mistreated by the other guys and we needed our own gig since the V-twin industry had grown substantially. In these sour economic times everyone is fighting for what’s left of the pie, and that pits friends against pals. It’s too bad they can’t close the loop instead of adding additional costs to dealers and manufacturers who are trying to make every dime count.

We will bring you all the info as the new show season begins. What the hell, keeps life interesting. An Oregon company is selling a razors for $100,000. The Zaffirro Iridium features solid white sapphire blades sharpened to 5,000 times thinner that the width of a hair. It will supposedly last forever (Week magazine).

In the meantime we have two Girls of Bikernet waiting in the Cantina wings, I have hot stories, another bike feature from South Carolina, a feature on the Bikernet Factory Racer from Doc in Australia, and we’re preparing for a acid run to the Badlands. I just received a note from Paul Cavallo that my shit was shipped, and Jim Murillo reported that our tanks are prepped and sealed. We’re beginning to rock and I should bring you another report next week.

Have a helluva weekend. We will wander through the LA Calendar show tomorrow and bring you a report on Sunday.

Ride forever,

–Bandit
