Hey,
Life is strange. I tell kids that if they catch a break, pass the final, win the marathon, that’s cools, but watch your ass. So many times I’ve seen folks score high, then fall completely on their asses, get a DUI, break up with their girlfriend, you name it. It’s as if they don’t feel deserving of the good omen, so they go directly into the self-destruct mode. Be careful.
One of the kids, our Bikernet TIG welding instructor, Nick, just graduated from the under-water welding school. His girl flew out from New York for the celebration, then went through his phone, found the other girl, and all hell broke loose. Hang on for what happens next. They were supposed to share a road trip across the south and up the eastern seaboard. It may not be happening now. Let’s hit the news.

EUROPEAN EFFORT FOR MOTORCYCLE SAFETY AND FREEDOM GROWING– Linked to the MEP Ride, on June 28/29 FEMA organized the first International Motorcyclists Conference in partnership with the Canadian and Australian motorcycling associations and the European Commission. Under the theme, “Motorcycling into the 21st Century”, key issues of the transport sector – environment, technology and safety – were presented and a forum for the exchange of ideas, the discussion of challenges and solutions was successfully launched.
This Conference aims at becoming a regular event gathering politically aware motorcyclists to discuss important matters of policy affecting motorcycling.
The two-day conference will took place at the Auto World conference centre in Brussels on June 28th and 29th. The event was attended by riders’ representatives, researchers, professional associations, traffic managers, trainers, industry and government representatives.
The event was a first of its kind opportunity to learn about the latest developments in motorcycle technology and safety, gain insight to the upcoming policy innovations in urban transport and infrastructure, and exchange views on the role of powered two-wheelers in mobility across the globe. On the first day of the Conference the European Commission officially launched the European Motorcyclists’ Forum, a platform for discussion which included a high-level round table on ‘motorcycling in the 21st Century’, along with a session dedicated to safety and mobility, presenting the views of motorcyclists and transport policy makers, and addressing the current developments of Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS).
The conference included a working session on infrastructure – where issues for riders, cases from North America, Europe and Australia as well as successful policies were presented. Human factors were addressed by the user forum of the European and international 2-BE-SAFE research project. In both sessions, transport experts from around the world presented their results and debated the outcomes in a fruitful exchange.
One highlight of the programme were the sessions on the next generation of motorcycles and sustainable mobility. The new technology to tackle this challenge was showcased with the latest developments deployed in zero emission motorsports, and their potential in driving market innovation.
On a test track zero emission motorcycles were demonstrated – including electric superbikes, and many attendees took the opportunity to test new motorcycles as well as electric powered two-wheelers.
The 2-day international conference was combined with FEMA’s 13th MEP Ride, bringing Members of the European Parliament and motorcyclists together for a festive ride around the European capital.

State of Florida Announces Large Decrease in Motorcycle-Related Deaths in 2009–Deland, FL, July 13, 2010 – In early July the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles (DHSMV) announced new data revealing a large decline in deaths occurring from motorcycle crashes in 2009. Over the last few years, the State of Florida has been reporting a decreasing number of deaths while motorcycle registrations in Florida have been steadily increasing. From 2000 to 2008, Florida has reported an average increase of 12.98% per year in motorcycle registrations, but reported a 0.77%, 2.90%, and 25.10% DECREASE in motorcycle crash fatalities for 2007, 2008, and 2009, respectively.
This is welcome news as motorcyclists in Florida have just celebrated the 10th anniversary of the freedom of choice when deciding if they were going to wear a helmet when going out to ride. Ten years ago on July 1, 2000, Governor Jeb Bush signed into law the repeal of Florida’s thirty-year-old requirement for motorcyclists in FL to wear helmets. Motorcycle registrations in Florida went up nearly 20% in a one-year time span (2000-2001) immediately adjacent to this repeal.
Additionally, since 2004, the State of Florida has been reporting that the majority of motorcycle drivers and passengers in fatal crashes have been wearing the optional safety helmet. Although motorcycle helmets do offer some defensive measures when one is involved in a head-trauma accident, these numbers offer evidence that a helmet is not the magic safety device many purport them to be.
The large decline in motorcycle crash fatalities may possibly be attributed to better motorcyclists’ training, as well as ABATE of Florida’s copyrighted Motorcycle Safety and Awareness Program (MSAP), which has been funded in part by the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles for the last few years. ABATE of Florida, Inc.’s MSAP makes presentations to civic organizations, Driver’s Education classes, public events, and many other opportunities, educating the motoring public that motorcycles are on all of Florida’s roadways.
More information on these new startling numbers may be found on the DHSMV’s website at www.flhsmv.gov. More information on ABATE of Florida, Inc.’s MSAP may be found on our website at www.abateflorida.com.

ATTIKA 7 Sprouted From Guitarist Rusty Coones’ Jail Time– a brand new band featuring former Static-X bassist Tony Campos — who is also the touring bassist for Prong — began as a seed of an idea in the brain of guitarist Rusty Coones, a Hells Angel and custom motorcycle maker who began writing songs for the band’s debut while he was in prison. Additionally, Pennywise’s Fletcher Dragge co-wrote songs with Attika 7. It’s clear that this project is as unconventional as it gets, from its inception through its execution.
The music is dark and doomy, as influenced by the sludge-caked riffs of Pantera as it is the industrial crunch of White Zombie, with a dose of whiskey-drenched vocals. “The first couple of years of being incarcerated in federal prison were probably the most dismal point of my life,” Coones told Noisecreep.
But he made lemonade out of some pretty sour lemons. “I was sentenced to eight years in prison for conspiracy to distribute ephedrine, of which I actually spent over five and a half years inside. I had a lot of time to kill and I read every book I came across the first couple of years. After I was transferred to Oregon, I got inspired to pick up the guitar again and start playing music.”
Thanks to a band program in the prison, Coones — who started playing guitar at the age of nine — was playing rock and blues with some of his fellow inmates. He said, “I was writing my own blues and rock songs and bringing them to the band.” But it didn’t last. A prison riot ensued, and he was transferred to a Texas prison to serve out the rest of his sentence, where he joined a new blues band.
“I started drop tuning my guitar into drop D and coming up these sick riffs that sounded so cool I couldn’t get into the blues anymore,” Coones said. “All my new material was drop tuned and heavy. I would sit in the prison yard and jam for hours on new riffs and write lyrics. It wasn’t long before I started a new band and played all my songs along with some covers, some of the lyrics were a reflection of life inside. Songs like ‘No Redemption’ and ‘Locked Down’ speak of prison life. The song ‘The Day is Comin” is a protest against government, as well as the song ‘Livin’ in Oppression.'”
Some good things came out of Coones’ incarceration and it was his musical creativity and productivity. He said, “This prison sentence was the most negative thing ever to happen to me, but if I didn’t go to prison, I wouldn’t have ever been inspired to play. The worse possible negative to happen to me in this life became the catalyst for my rebirth as a musician.”
Coones admits that he drifted from his guitar when he was in his teens, trading his instrument for dirt bikes. He got his first Harley-Davidson at 19 and he became fully immersed in the cycle lifestyle, a culture which he remains very enmeshed in today. He became a Hells Angel in 1995, and he was arrested on drug conspiracy charges in 1999.
Besides writing music, he was supported by his wife, KO, and had an army of friends and boosters while behind bars. “Soon after my release I started looking for bandmates to bring my music to the streets,” Coones said. “That was five and a half years ago. We have been honing our craft in rehearsal studios and playing gigs since.”
Campos, whom Coones describes as “machine-gun fast,” joined Attika 7 after completing his final tour with Static-X. While he also tours with Prong and Asesino, he likes to stay busy and get out of the house with other projects! “I wasn’t really sure what I was going to do next,” Campos told Noisecreep. “A few weeks later, I met the band’s manager at a show. He emailed me the material and I thought it was cool. The following week, I met the guys and we got along great. Soon after, we started jamming.”
There are not keyboards or programming in Attika 7 and there is only one guitarist, which is the main difference between this new project and his old one. Campos said, “Having only one guitar player that takes solos presents a new situation for me. I have to fill in parts where a rhythm guitar would normally be, so I’ll kick in some distortion and play some chords on certain parts.” He calls Attika 7 “straight up metal. It’s not industrial metal, death metal or some other kind of fill in the blank metal. It’s straightforward, no nonsense, ‘put your head down and go’ metal.”

SPOKANE H-D DEALERSHIP TO REOPEN– Spokane area Harley owners will once again have a local dealership to turn to, as the new owners of the former Shumate dealerships plan to reopen them next month.
Greg and Beth Ernst, owners of Lone Wolf Harley-Davidson in Coeur d’Alene, Idaho, bought Spokane Valley’s Harley dealership out of bankruptcy and plan to reopen it under the name Timber Wolf Harley-Davidson.
They paid about $4.3 million to buy the Shumate equipment and assets, according to the Spokesman Review. That includes the Spokane store and one in Lewiston, Idaho, which may not reopen.
The Spokane Valley store will be the only full-service Harley dealership in Spokane County. It’s set for a soft opening Aug. 17 and a grand opening celebrations Aug. 28.
John Michial Shumate, bought the Spokane Valley store from previous owner George Latus in 2004. He filed for bankruptcy last year after closing his dealerships in Lewiston, Spokane Valley and the Tri-Cities.
Greg Ernst told the newspaper he has sold off a large number of 2009 Harley motorcycles from the Spokane Valley and Lewiston stores.
“Those new motorcycles were about three-fourths of all product (in the two stores),” he said.
The Ernsts started the Coeur d’Alene store in 2008.

BIKERNET BONNEVILLE TEAM GROWING–Just got a call from the Mad Frenchman (Beaulieu). He offered me a slot on the 5 Ball team.
In short, I am IN. Put me down for the head gofer and wrench-passer position!!! Marc filled me in a little on the fact that Berry, Duff and a couple others won’t be able to make it, so I’m ready to bust some knuckles.
So this time around, I’m going to drive my Nissan Pickup Truck (Model: POS (Piece of Shit)). It has an open bed, but I can put a whole bunch of stuff in there. I’ll be bringing tools. I’ve got all kinds of stuff that’ll be helpful. Torque wrenches, ring compressers, electrical test equipment. On and on. I also have a 15 Gal reservoir electric air compressor on wheels I can bring, with hoses, air wrench. I don’t have a gasoline generator to run electrical stuff, but I can probably scare one up, if you don’t have one.
I’ll be driving straight across to Wendover, so I’ll meet you there. Give me the schedule of when you’re arriving/departing, and I’ll do what I can to be there as long as possible.
As far as accomodations go, I’ll bring a sleeping bag, and can contribute to the room costs. I know you guys are running lean and mean this year (who isn’t?), so I’ll try to help defray costs any time I can.
Thanks for keeping a spot open for me!
See ya in a few weeks…let me know what I can bring

Pfeifer-Zeliska .600 Nitro Express Magnum —The worlds most powerful pistol is the Austrian Pfeifer-Zeliska .600 Nitro Express Magnum. It is chambered to fire the British developed .600 caliber rifle bullet originally made by Holland and Holland. This revolver was not originally a full production model but a one off built especially for a wealthy Swiss gent…Mr. Zeliska.
But if you would like one and I am sure that a few of you licensed rootin tootin gun lovers with a bit of disposable income would, then contact Pfeifer arms ( url near bottom of page ) and they will make one for you. Priced at 13,840 Euro’s. This equates as $16,501 or £9,417 ( Exchange rate Feb 24th 2006 )
The Pfeifer Revolver is also available chambered for the ..458 Winchester Magnum and qualifies as the second world’s most powerful handgun.
The .600 Nitro Express Magnum revolver is a Single Action, 5 shot, old west style gun. A single action revolver is stronger in construction than a double action revolver due to the solid base frame that the cylinder sits in.
The image below shows the colossal size of the revolver in the hands of a suitably impressed gun magazine photographer !
This is not a joke. This gun really exists. It’s the absolute ultimate Magnum revolver and one that Smith & Wesson would rather you didn’t know about as their market researcher would need medication !
Because of its size this revolver would need to be fired whilst resting on a bench clamp or small sand bags as shown in the image below. The gun weighs in at 13.23lbs and consequently is heavy enough to absorb most of the violent recoil. In fact it is on scale to firing the .50 Magnum.

Hells Angels clubhouse seized in Winnipeg–The Manitoba government has temporarily seized a Hells Angels clubhouse in Winnipeg and is seeking court permission to take it over permanently.
Manitoba Justice has filed a statement of claim in the Court of Queen’s Bench for the forfeiture of the property and its contents at 2679 Scotia St. in the city’s Rivergrove area.
Justice Department spokesman Gordon Schumacher said the property has been used as a place to plan and carry out criminal activity.
“There are a number of offences that we are alleging took place here, including money laundering, breaches of the Liquor Control Act, proceeds of crime, amongst others. And it’s based on those charges that were here today.”
Police said the Scotia Street home has been a Hells Angels Clubhouse for just over a decade.
An interim order has allowed the province to seize the property immediately, according to a news release issued by the province.
The claim alleges the property was used as a place to plan and carry out criminal activity. That makes it subject to forfeiture under Manitoba’s Criminal Property Forfeiture Act.
According to the legislation, proceeds from unlawful acts and property used in an unlawful act may be forfeited to the government by order of the court. Along with real estate, items such as cash and vehicles can also be forfeited.
Proceeds from the sale of forfeited property are placed in a fund to support activities such as:
* Compensating victims of the unlawful activity.
* Remedying the effects of the unlawful activity.
* Promoting safer communities by funding programs that reduce or prevent crime or enhance the practices and training of law enforcement agencies.
* Covering the costs of the court application and seizing, managing and selling property ordered forfeited by a court.
Property ordered forfeited by a court can be sold, donated or destroyed.
The province hasn’t indicated what it plans to do in this case.
A total of 35 statements of claim have been filed since the legislation was enacted in 2004.

NEWS FROM THE SEMA FRONT– The U.S. House Energy and Commerce Committee approved the “National Manufacturing Strategy Act” (H.R. 4692), which would make manufacturing a top priority for Congress and the administration. This SEMA-supported legislation is intended to promote government policies to foster economic growth, increase employment and productivity, and expand exports for the nation’s manufacturing sector. The legislation would establish a public-private advisory board to make policy recommendations to the president on how to achieve short- and long-term goals and report its findings to Congress.
The board would include representatives from various federal agencies, two state governors, private sector members with experience in managing companies, supply chain providers and labor organizations. Topics for consideration would include competitiveness, stability, sustainability, trade balance and job creation in a global economy. The board would be challenged to outline specific action items to achieve its goals and recommendations. SEMA is encouraged that the legislation is now set for a vote in the House later this summer or fall.

BIKERNET CULINARY INSTITUTE– How To: Cooking with Wine.
Want to add flavor and reduce the amount of fat you use when cooking? Try wine. Red or white, wine offers a unique character to entrees, and can also help to cut down on the amount of fat you use – in some recipes, you can substitute wine for part or all of the specified quantity of oil. I like to use wine when sautéing or pan frying, as it works well in place of the oil that it would typically require.
One thing to note: While cooking with wine can enhance flavor, you won’t reap the health benefits that wine offers – cooking causes a loss of between 60 and 95 percent of the alcohol content of wine, so few, if any, of the direct alcohol-related health benefits remain.
SUNDAY WRAP-UP–We received a comment from a reader requesting more techs. We will finish up the S&S Twin Cam 97-inch kit next week. It will include headwork by Branch O’Keefe, Bub exhaust, and performance tips from Bennett’s Performance in Long Beach. We have more book reviews from Kevin Thomas and a special report on the Harely-Davidson business model from a Milwaukee business journal. Doc will send us daily Sturgis reports, and I’m wrapping up a chapter of World Run.
I’m trying to go to paint with the Peashooter, but I ran into a problem lining up the 1929 Peashooter engine sprocket with mainshaft from the 1942 BSA 4-speed transmission. I need to offset everything. I need to hand make the entire transmission mounting system, before I deliver the tank to Jim Murillo, or all the powerder work to Worco. Damn, there’s always something. I’ll bring you a full report.
And I need Nick to help with a couple of fabrication items, but he’s at war with the little blonde from the east. Hang on.
