I’m going to jump right into the news. I’ve got whiskey and women waiting for me. I need to scramble back into the shop and finish fitting the gas tank for the Peashooter. Tomorrow, I promise to post the 10th 2010 Bonneville report. Talk about changing directions.

 

Chris Callen called this morning and reported in after his Hokey run to Alaska. We have a report on his journey ducking Kodak bears and porcupines the size of Collies. The Flat Rat vintage road racing team reported from their last race, and we have their dicey report. Two bike features are coming, and fuck it, let’s hit the news:

 

 

 

 

BAD RUMOR CONTROL–A rumor floated into the Bikernet Headquarters on Wednesday, “Bub Motorcycle Speed Trials was canceled.” That’s not the case. We called Delvene, confirmed that all was well on the Bonneville front and nipped it in the bud. “We have 235 pre-entries, right now,” Delvene told me. “That’s just 20 less than last year.”

We need finish the registration on the Assalt Weapan, and I talked to Delvene about entering the Peashooter. That will bring up the entries to 237. Pray for terrific salt conditions.

 

 

 

 

BEAUTY QUEENS, BIKES, OOMPH BANDS, AND BURGERS ON THE ROOF, 4TH OF JULY FROM THE CALIFORNIA DELTA–

For us bikers, every day is Independence Day. Life on dual wheels is very liberating. It’s what makes us who we are. And most of us are on the cultural battle lines (and the roadways) nearly every day to keep it that way.

 

But each year around the Fourth of July, we let the citizens in on it as well. Those sunshine celebrants make it a weekend-long hoorah. We go along with ‘em, usually on two wheels. After all, we dig the signing of the Declaration of Independence as much as anybody. Guess that makes us double-dippers liberty wise. So be it.

 

  

Here in Northern California’s Delta region, life is mostly small-town, rural USA. It follows that the Fourth of July hereabouts is pretty down home too. Commercialization takes a backseat on the tractor to kids in handmade costumes crafted of crape paper and enthusiasm.

 

We made the local rounds and this is some of what we saw: a mom and dad delivering their teenaged Pear Fair queen to her parade float; pretty cowgirls in matching white chaps, with unfurled old glory snapping smartly in the wind; boats filled to the gunnels with lobster-red party animals; parading fire trucks full of four-alarm happy faces; a marching tuba player in a silly hat belting out “In the Mood” and other tunes; Harleys sporting red-white-blue bunting; a cattle drive down a main street, and bombs bursting in air. It was proof through the weekend that our country is still there (even if you have to look a little harder for it these days).

 

 

As our friend and bluesman Charlie Brechtel says, “God bless America, and God bless the American biker.” Amen, brother.

THE BIKERNET MEDICAL CENTER LESSON OF THE DAY–

First-year students at Texas A&M’s Vet school were attending their first anatomy class, with a real dead cow. They all gathered around the surgery table with the body covered with a white sheet. The professor started the class by telling them, “In Veterinary Medicine it is necessary to have two important qualities as a doctor: The first is that you not be disgusted by anything involving the animal body.”

For an example, the professor pulled back the sheet, stuck his finger in the butt of the dead cow, withdrew it and stuck his finger in his mouth. “go ahead and do the same thing,” he told his students. The students freaked out, hesitated for several minutes, but eventually took turns sticking a finger in the butt of the dead cow and sucking on it.

When everyone finished, the professor looked at them and said, “the second most important quality is observation. I stuck in my middle finger and sucked on my index finger. Now learn to pay attention. life’s tough, but it’s even tougher if you’re stupid..”

BIKERNET DUAL KNUCKLEHEAD BIKE FEATURE COMING– 
Just wanted to check in and give ya an update. The shoot scheduled for Sat. went ok, but we had  some technical difficulties on the way to the shoot. They’re (Jed’s Cycle Products, www.jedscycleproducts.com) redoing the pipes and repairs, but the cool thing is they’re only in Elk Grove, not far from us, so we can jam back over there for another shoot when it’s ready, in a week or two. I’m enjoying working with them, very down to earth folks. Not often you feel like family with a customer, least not me, but they are the exception.

PEASHOOTER PRIMARY–I’m working with Classic Cycles (Orange, CA, 714-974-1438) on a primary belt system for the Peashooter with a ’50s Norton 4-speed transmission. The make speciality primary systems for Triumph bobbers, and special applications, such as mine. Here’s some of the dialog between Andy Dunn and me:

 

Definitely if you could measure the distance between the shafts in some sort of ‘middle position’ that would help with a belt measurment. Also, do you happen to have the stock front engine sprocket?

The bike looks cool! That outta be a blast on the salt for sure.. I got a couple of questions for the belt drive, 1 – does the trans have a designated mount yet? Or can we change it?   2 – Are you sure the engine crankshaft is tapered? Or does it just drive with a key?

Cool, the reason I ask about the tranny mounting is related to belt length… There are only so many icrements available so we have to set up the mounts with a belt length in mind…

PIKES PEAK H-D HELPS BIKERNET STAFF MEMBER–
Sorta good news on the dead King front. The Mother Ship in Milwaukee and Pikes Peak H-D here in Colorado Springs told me today that they’ll cover all the fucked-up parts in my out-of-warranty ’07 Road King if I’ll pay the labor. Not great, but more than I expected, and it’s about a grand less than I’d have to shell out otherwise.

I’m no wrench or I’d attempt it myself, but haven’t the tools, time, or knowledge (aside from routine maintenance and very basic stuff) to do so. That’s a nice way of saying that sometimes, I can fuck up an anvil.

I’ll have to send you some pics of the damaged parts later. Scary shit that could’ve left me off the side of a mountain somewhere with a sprocket up my ass, I shit you not.

RFR COVERS THE ROT– I did make ROT but mainly covered the tattoo contest and some shots from down on Congress, so I was not sure if I really had enough to get any words together.  Here are some shots from ROT and Cut Throat Customs bike night, CTC is competing in the AMD show at Sturgis this year so it was sort of a party to celebrate Danny and the shop.

I think I added one from 1978 of me drinking from a boot, not a glass one designed for drinking beer, but one off someone’s foot.

GET YOUR T-SHIRTS TO SUPPORT THE FIGHT AGAINST BOSTON CITY COUNCIL!!–They consider themselves Americans searching for the freedoms they are supposed to be guaranteed as Americans. A great many of them military veterans, they think that among the freedoms they fought for is the right to ride their motorcycles without helmets if they so desire. In California, and in many other states, they can’t, not without risking a hefty ticket. They have rallied like this every Fourth of July for the past 15 years.

 

They have Congressman Bob Filner on their side. He spoke, and even rode with the group as they traveled from Fiesta Island to Kearny Mesa, Filner did, as you can see, wear a helmet. They were sort of hoping some of their members would be stopped and ticketed, no such luck. They arrived at San Diego Harley Davidson without so much as a single citation among them. Filner says he sympathizes fully with their desire to do away with the helmet law. If nothing else, they get points for persistence.

 

State Senator Denise Ducheny is also one of their supporters, but she too, says it’s going to be a difficult task defeating two of the most powerful lobbies in Sacramento, the medical industry and the insurance industry. But frankly, a change is not likely to come through the legislative process, if there is a chance of doing away with the law, it would more probably happen if the appellate courts decide it’s unconstitutional. The riders say the fight will go on.

I recently judged a local show and shine bike show at the Western Development Museum. It is something I’ve enjoyed doing since the good old days when I use to own a motorcycle “shop”. It is a great way to spend the day, a great way to see some really fine machines. Even though I am primarily known as a Hartley guy, I do appreciate all kinds of motorcycles. I try to be objective and also make sure my fellow judges are well verse in Metric bikes so that everyone’s bike has an “expert”.

 

People put a lot of work into their motorcycles, to make them their own, to make them an expression of themselves. For the most part it is a fairly easy job after all who wouldn’t want to spend the day scrutinizing every nut and bolt on a beautiful machine. That is the easy part. The down side is having to tell someone that their pride and hard missed the mark but some times it is necessary to break peoples hearts. One year I was berated for giving low marks to one gentleman’s bike — he had won at another show and shine-and while I appreciated his work, his grimy bike didn’t hold a candle to the high end choppers he was trying to compete against.

 

Sometimes I wonder what people are thinking when they check off a category. Admittedly, sometimes we have to shuffle bikes around in the categories to make sure that the bike is on fair footing and competing against similar bikes. Stock bike, means stock. It doesn’t mean adding every single bolt-on item that they can find in a catalog and some that aren’t and then expect to compete against a showroom 1984 Virago. It also means that 2010 Street Bob had better be bone stock and cleaner than stock to beat out a 26-year-old bike.

 

My favourite category is the vintage bikes. It gives me the most freedom to deem what is acceptable and what isn’t. It means a barn fresh find can compete against a full nine-point restoration. A 1946 Harley that looks like a 64-year-old bike is just as nice as the one that looks like it just rolled off the assembly line.

 

Judging bike shows means getting to know the riders and their bikes. Some let the bikes speak for themselves; some pitch it like it is a $2 dollar Taiwan whore. One year a proud owner ranted and raved about all the work he put into his bike. Hundreds of man-hours went into building a bike that was dis-portionate, wrong angles, wrong lines, too long of frame with the wrong size tank. The chunky metal flake paint, sprayed in his backyard during a particular bad swarm of mosquitoes didn’t help his case nor did the pitted and peeling chrome over rust. Honestly I thought the bike was ugly as sin.

 

A high end Eddie Trotta chopper it wasn’t but his welds were tight, his motor cleaner than a dinner plate. It was what you would expect to be built by some guy in his back yard in the 1960-70’s with limited resources, limited knowledge. Sometimes a bike is what it is meant to be.

Our state legislators have forced us to wear helmets in the name of safety, yet it was not their concern for us, but the political contributions from insurance companies that got this law passed. Now, they want to pass another that will severely restrict one of the three things that keep us alive in today’s distracted traffic: Our sight, our hearing, and the attention of drivers around us. Unless drivers are sufficiently annoyed, they will not notice a motorcycle, and our invisibility to them is the biggest threat to our safety.

Do I have loud pipes on my motorcycle? Absolutely, for the same reason that a police officer wears a bulletproof vest. They both save lives. Do my loud pipes annoy you? Your inattention annoys me, so we’re even!

My life only matters to me, my family, and a small group of friends. It doesn’t matter to the guy eating his hamburger in his Lexus at 75 miles per hour, or the woman looking back, scolding her kids, in the car that’s dangerously close to my rear fender. Do they see me? No. Do they look when they hear me? Yes. That could be the difference between playing with my grandchildren and being just another unread name in the obituaries.

FAN PHOTO FROM KEY CLUB SHOW– The sound was off the hook and as always, ATTIKA didn’t disappoint. Every song in the line-up a potential hit. Played with stuccato precision, and tight as hell.

The world of motorcycles has always been a favourite theme of photographers. A call has now gone out to photographers from all over Europe to submit their photographs on this theme to a very special photo competition.

 

This year’s INTERMOT photography competition is being organized by Koelnmesse and the German Motorcycle Industry Association (IVM), who are also the organizers of the leading international trade fair and ordering event for motorised two-wheelers — INTERMOT Cologne. The Cologne-based photographer Michael Busch will be responsible for the artistic coordination of the competition. The finalists’ images will be shown for the first time at a special exhibition at photokina from September 21 to 26, 2010.

 

The competition will be open to amateurs as well as professional photographers. Within the overarching theme of “Motorcycles” it will include typical photography genres such as Lifestyle, People, Travel Photography, Motorcycle Racing and Electronic Image Processing. The organizers have deliberately included this broad range of genres in the hope that the participants will be inspired to submit creative, classic, modern and even daring images that express their personal relationship with the world of motorcycles.

 

The participants’ photographs can be submitted in the following categories: “My World of Motorcycles”, “Biker Types”, “Emotions of Travel on Two Wheels”, “Motorcycle Racing” and “Moto Digital”. Further information on:

A jury consisting of experts from both areas — photography and motorcycles — will choose the finalists from the photos submitted and present them in a special exhibition at photokina (21st to 26th September 2010). The attractive top prizes, which fit perfectly into the overall concept of the competition, will be top-quality lenses from the photo industry partner Tamron and, from the two-wheeler sector, a scooter from Peugeot. With a bit of luck, people who do not yet own a camera can win a Hero 5 HD HELMET from GP Pro if they send in one sentence explaining why they should win one of these cameras, which can be fitted onto every motorcycle, to foto@intermot.de by 15th July 2010. “My World of Motorcycles”

The emotions and preferences associated with motorcycle and scooter riding are as diverse as the riders themselves. Some people love vintage motorcycles, while others insist on having the latest model. Some people love to tinker with their bikes, while others just ride. Still others enjoy all of these aspects. Whether people ride their bikes to work every day or only in their leisure time, whether they’re working on their bikes in the garage or riding them on the road — there’s always a special feeling associated with an engine on two wheels.

The photos competing in this category should reveal something about the participants’ unique perspective on their world of motorcycles.

 

“Biker Types”

The photos competing in this category should combine the theme of motorcycles with “people photography”. The award-winning photos must be images of people who are obviously passionate about motorcycles and whose lives are clearly characterized by their special relationship with the motorcycle lifestyle. People, bikes and emotions — that’s what should be visible in the photographs.

 

“Motorcycle Racing and Action”

This is the category for all photos related to the theme of motorcycle racing, show riding and motorcycle activities. Whether they are taken from a spectator’s or an insider’s perspective, the competing photos should express people’s enthusiasm and fascination for motorized sports on two, three or four wheels, as in the case of quads.

 

“Emotions of Travel on Two Wheels”

On the road on a motorcycle — whether it’s a private trip or a group expedition. In Germany or at the far ends of the earth. With a one-man tent or hotel reservations made in advance; alone or in a group. Cross-country or on asphalt — this category is for photographs that capture the impressions of a journey.

 

“Moto Digital”

This category is for digitally processed photographs dealing with the theme of motorcycles; the photographs must be primarily characterized by the digital processing. This is the “royal road” for fans of digital image processing. 

Awards will be presented to images whose design involves digital effects that, in the opinion of the judges, successfully emphasize the theme and its expression.

 

(Note: Digitally processed photographs can basically be submitted in all categories of the competition. Only photographs that are expressly submitted in the category “Moto Digital” will be judged in the competition in this category according to the special criteria described above.)

6/28/10 – Testifying in SUPPORT of SB 435 – No Aftermarket Exhaust Bill for Motorcycles

Uh, Bonnie Holmes-Gen with the American Lung Association in California.

And we’re pleased to support this bill because we think that it represents a very important step forward, uh, in anti-tampering of motorcycles that will result in significant air quality and public health benefits.

 

As the author stated, uhm, this bill will increase enforcement of current anti-tampering and noise level statutes for motorcycles and we believe this will have tremendous benefits insuring that motorcycles that are on the roads today operate with approved emission control systems.

 

And as you have heard, if, if, eh, motorcycles are tampered and don’t have required pollution control equipment they are emitting several times more, maybe 10 times more emission per mile than motor vehicles and that has serious public health implications. Of course smog contributes to asthma attacks, lung illnesses, heart illnesses, hospitalizations and even, uh, premature death.

 

So, we are supporting this bill from an air quality perspective and we believe that addressing this issue of

tampering is long overdue.

Uhm, we just, we think this bill is an important two-fer. It’s, it’s, it’s important for the public for reducing noise but also of course, and from our perspective, more importantly to reduce pollution emissions that contribute to health, uh, serious health concerns and we ask your “aye” vote today.

STRONGSVILLE, Ohio – July 6, 2010– PPG contributed the paint for a newly restored 1970 Chevrolet Chevelle muscle car auctioned off as part of Super Chevy magazine’s “Project American Heroes” fundraising program. The sale of the unique vehicle was conducted by Barrett-Jackson Auctions Saturday, June 26 at the Orange County Fair & Event Center in Costa Mesa, CA. The winning bid was $250,000. All proceeds from the car’s sale go to the Armed Forces Foundation for the benefit of military veterans and their families.

The lucky bidder not only got an incredible machine, but also did something important for the men and women of our military and their families.”

 

The team at Route 66 Motorsports, New Lenox, IL, contributed time and talent to make this dream car a reality. Starting with a donated Chevelle body, Route 66 did a ground-up restoration to produce a monster of a classic muscle car. The team used PPG’s line of Deltron products to clean and prep the body for its gleaming black and torch red paint job – achieved with Deltron 2000 DBC 9700 Basecoat Black and DCU 2021 Urethane Clear. Complementing the lustrous finish is a 550-horsepower, supercharged V-8 engine along with a six-speed transmission and a supporting cast of sophisticated suspension, brake, fuel, radiator and filtration system components. It adds up to a stunning machine – in both looks and performance.

 

Project American Heroes was started in 2007 by Super Chevy magazine to provide financial support to the men and women of the Armed Forces through the sale of classic Chevy automobiles. The’70 Chevelle is the third vehicle built for the program and painted with PPG automotive finishes. The first was a 1957 Chevrolet convertible followed by a 1969 Camaro coupe, which was auctioned off at Barrett-Jackson for an impressive $500,000.
