RAPID CITY JOURNAL’S BIKER DUDE OF THE DAY–

Bruce Patnode has been riding motorcycles for 30 years, but the 77th Sturgis motorcycle rally was the first rally he’s ever attended.

He was clad in biker gear Tuesday morning on Main Street in Deadwood next to his 2016 Harley-Davidson Limited. Patnode, 64, drove more than 1,300 miles from Big Bear, Calif., for his first rally. He rode out with a friend, and both of them rode 750 miles their first day on the road.

“It was hard to expect everything,” Patnode said.

Even so, he has loved his first rally experience.

“Everybody’s friendly. In California, they’re a little stuck up.”

He spent Tuesday exploring the Black Hills, Mount Rushmore National Memorial and Crazy Horse Memorial.

“I love the women, and I love all the things, too,” Patnode said.

Good write up on Rewaco. One item you didn’t mention was who is authorized to do maintenance and all parts have to be ordered from Germany. Once those issues have been resolved I will be a Rewaco owner.

BIKERNET HALL OF FAME UPDATE — Davidson, others inducted into Sturgis Museum Hall of Fame

The Sturgis Motorcycle Museum & Hall of Fame recognizes individuals or groups who have made a long-term, positive impact on the motorcycle community.

Those individuals were honored Wednesday morning at the annual Sturgis Museum Hall of Fame Induction Breakfast.

Inductees for 2017 included William G. Davidson, Lifetime Achievement Award; Colleen Barnett and Mike Taylor, Cory Ness, Mark Shadley, Jim Thiessen, Terry Vance and Rod Woodruff.

Organizers say they honor the Hall of Fame members by telling their stories and history of their stories, and by showcasing their contributions and accomplishments.

Here is a look at the class of 2017:

William G. Davidson Lifetime Achievement Award.

Considered the patriarch of motorcycling by bikers around the globe, William G. Davidson’s artistic vision and passion for riding have not only shaped Harley-Davidson’s identity for more than 50 years, they have transformed the entire motorcycle world. Affectionately known as “Willie G.” by millions of motorcycle enthusiasts, Harley-Davidson’s Chief Styling Officer Emeritus and Brand Ambassador is set to be honored with the Lifetime Achievement Award. Already a pre-2001 member of the Sturgis Motorcycle Museum Hall of Fame, Willie G. was joined by his lovely wife Nancy in the Class of 2010.

The son of former Harley-Davidson president, William H. Davidson, and the grandson of one of the original founders, William A. Davidson, he has helped shape the iconic look, sound and feel that have defined Harley-Davidson motorcycles for more than 50 years. Starting in the 1970s, he developed iconic designs which kept Harley-Davidson motorcycles selling while the company completed technological and manufacturing improvements. Throughout his career he developed the bikes that came to define Harley-Davidson, from the XLCR Cafe Racer up through the V-Rod and the Street Glide.

Colleen Barnett & Mike Taylor —
Colleen Barnett-Taylor started her motorsports career at Barnett Clutches & Cables while still in her childhood working for her parents (and original 1948 founders), Charlie and Afton Barnett. Since the beginning Colleen has been a driving force and integral part of the company. Mike Taylor, already a long-time motorcycle rider/enthusiast, joined the firm in 1968 which cemented a great partnership after he and Colleen were married. Together they have operated Barnett since 1975 and owned the company since 1993.

Cory Ness —
Don’t think for a second that Cory Ness rode his famous father’s coattails into the Sturgis Hall Of Fame. At only 10 years old, he disassembled his bicycle, painted it, chromed its parts and entered it in the Oakland Roadster Show. The first motorcycle he turned his talents to was a wrecked CB350. After building it back up, Cory sold it before even getting a chance to ride it. He was 14! Today Cory is the chief designer behind Arlen Ness Enterprises where he runs the day-to-day business. In between designing new parts and accessories, he still finds time to wrench on custom bikes periodically.

Mark Shadley —
Since the early 1970s Mark Shadley and Shadley Bros. Motorcycles have been shaping the perception of what a custom motorcycle is. The quality, detail and innovation of his custom built bikes have made him well recognized by both the motorcycle industry and his peers. His enthusiasm and involvement in the custom motorcycle industry has been a lifelong passion.

Jim Thiessen —
For 50 years, machinist and go-fast guy Jim Thiessen has generated trust with riders, record breakers, racers and certified Harley mechanics around the world whom use JIMS® products on a daily basis. Today JIMS® is one of the industry’s leading producers of performance parts, accessories, tools, transmissions and high-performance engines — all aimed at enhancing the Harley rider’s experience.

Terry Vance —
#35 on the NHRA’s 50 greatest drag racers of all- time, 14-time national champ Terry Vance never lets off the gas! Terry and his tuner Byron Hines shared a passion for the quarter mile from the early days, but they also shared a vision of creating a company that would be a pillar of the motorcycle aftermarket, and they used their unrivaled achievements in racing to build a brand that would unmistakably stand for quality and performance.Terry Vance is an American former professional motorcycle drag racer, racing team owner and manufacturer of high performance parts for motorcycles.

Rod Woodruff — Since 1981. the Sturgis Buffalo Chip Campground has treated millions of motorcyclists to rock concerts, camping, entertainment and more. Rod Woodruff is the man who brought Rock & Roll to the Black Hills and now hosts a 10-day Concert Series each August during the annual Sturgis Motorcycle Rally. The Buffalo Chip provides a music festival, various other forms of entertainment, and full service tent, RV and cabin camping on almost 600 acres in rural Meade County.

BIKERNET BOOK OF THE WEEK — SOUL RIDER

Facing Fear and Finding Redemption on a Harley

By Carolyn Fox

Praise for Soul Rider

“In this inspiring memoir, Fox takes every woman who has longed to reconnect intimately with herself on an unbelievable ride.”
—Dawn Thompson, Portland Women Writers

“Soul Rider is a lesson in how stepping out of your comfort zone and conquering your fear can lead you to the life that you are meant to live.”
—Annette White, author of Bucket List Adventures: 10 Incredible Journeys to Experience Before You Die

“Fox was one of the first women in modern history to venture out on her motorcycle on a (mid)life-changing solo journey. Her stories of freedom and liberation will inspire others to do the same for generations to come.”
—Genevieve Schmitt, founder/editor of WomenRidersNow.com

This is the story of a woman who went on an incredible journey. Carolyn Fox was a single mother and lawyer haunted with grief and secrets, and facing her fiftieth birthday. She decided to change her life by facing her fears: she bought a Harley, packed it with a sleeping bag and tent, and set out to ride through all fifty states—alone! Soul Rider: Facing Fear and Finding Redemption on a Harley (Skyhorse Publishing; July 18, 2017; $16.99) is her gripping travel/journey memoir, written by a successful woman who realized she would have to make significant changes in the way she lived and thought, if she ever had a chance to find peace and wholeness. Soul Rider will inspire readers to:
· Believe they can improve the quality of their lives by stepping outside their comfort zones
· Find the courage to ask for forgiveness—first by forgiving others, and then by forgiving themselves
· Recognize that loneliness can be overcome, simply by being the first to say, “hello”
· Learn that it’s okay to admit failures, fears, and guilt.

Stuff happens to everyone. Confront those things and discover how quickly personal empowerment flows.

Along the way, Carolyn traveled alone but met colorful characters, received positive media attention, discovered who she was, and put more than fourteen thousand miles on her bike. She kept a journal of her adventures, and the result is Soul Rider.

About the Author

Carolyn Fox started law school at forty-one, learned to ride a motorcycle at age forty-six, and obtained her private pilot license at sixty. She has also worked as a private investigator and served as a grant writer to help fund nonprofit organizations. She resides in Lake Oswego, Oregon.

Continued Praise for Soul Rider

“While this story will keep you invested, wondering what will happen next, it’s more than just entertaining; it’s important. There simply aren’t enough role models like Carolyn Fox in our world, a woman who shows us how to aim straight for our fears—and run them over.”
—Holly Lorincz, author of The Stonecutter’s Daughter

BIKERNET BAD JOKE LIBRARY IS OPEN EVEN WHEN BANDIT IS OUT–

We met at Uncle Glenn’s bar……….
Having already downed a few power drinks, she turns around, faces him, looks him straight in the eye and says, “Listen here, good looking. I will screw anybody, anytime, anywhere, their place, my place, in the car, front door, back door, on the ground, standing up, sitting down, naked or with clothes on…It doesn’t matter to me. I just love it.” His eyes now wide with interest, he responds, “No kidding… I’m in Government too. Are you federal or state?”

The bLU cRU Road Racers Are Looking To Uncork Their Yamahas In Wine Country This Weekend

Cypress, CA – August 9, 2017 – Round 7 of the 2017 MotoAmerica AMA/FIM North American Road Racing Championship is this weekend at Sonoma Raceway in Sonoma, CA, and the Yamaha bLU cRU road racers are looking forward to returning to a track that they haven’t had the pleasure of visiting in a few years.

For two-time and defending MotoAmerica Superbike Champion Cameron Beaubier and his teammate Josh Hayes, who is a four-time AMA Superbike Champ, Sonoma Raceway is a track on which both riders have had a lot of success.

For Cameron, Sonoma is located close to his home in Roseville, CA, and it’s where, in 2010, he won the very first time he raced as an AMA Pro rider on the 2.52-mile, 12-turn road course (while aboard a Yamaha YZF-R6). The last time Cameron raced at Sonoma–in 2014–he was aboard the previous-generation Yamaha YZF-R1 Superbike, and he earned the pole position and won that race too.

Cameron commented, “I love having two MotoAmerica rounds in California and close to my home. I’m excited to rip the new-generation R1 Superbike around Sonoma, and I’m looking forward to getting back on track after the summer break. The team and I are ready to go!”

Josh has also had a lot of success at Sonoma Raceway, having notched a total of five Superbike race victories aboard his R1 during what has been a phenomenal Yamaha road-racing career.

“Sonoma was the site of my very first Superbike win in 2009, and it was on this Yamaha team,” Josh said. “I’m happy to be returning to a great, spectator-friendly, California racetrack, and I hope to put on a great show for the fans. The team is looking to get back to our winning ways, and I definitely want to do my part. See you at the track!”

Superbike Superpole (Qualifying) is on Saturday at 11:30 AM PST, Superbike Race 1 will go green on Saturday at 3:30 PM PST, and Superbike Race 2 is on Sunday at 3:30 PM PST.

After six rounds and ten races so far in the 2017 MotoAmerica Supersport Championship, defending Champ Garrett Gerloff has a scant, four-point lead over his teammate and 2015 Supersport Champion JD Beach.

Both riders last competed at Sonoma Raceway in 2014. Garrett earned the pole position and then won the race aboard his Yamaha YZF-R6, so JD is looking for a little bit of redemption at Sonoma, as well as an opportunity to leapfrog Garrett in the points standings.

“Back to Sonoma, finally!” Garrett exclaimed. “I fell in love with Sonoma Raceway back in 2014 when I raced there for the very first time, and I’ve been looking forward to going back ever since. With the new R6 working better than ever, I’m ready to get out there on track Friday morning.”

JD commented. “Going into Sonoma, it’s going to be different. We’ve raced there in the past, but it’s been a few years, and it was a different series. I kind of feel like it’s a new racetrack, and I’m going to approach it like that. My results at Sonoma haven’t been all that great in the past, so I’m going into it with an open mind, and I’m looking forward to working with my awesome crew to put my 2017 Yamaha R6 at the front!”

Supersport Qualifying at Sonoma Raceway is Saturday at 9:20 AM PST, Supersport Race 1 is scheduled for Saturday at 2:25 PM PST, and Supersport Race 2 will go green on Sunday at 2:25 PM PST.

Meet The Yamaha bLU cRU Road Racers Twice This Weekend!

All your favorite Yamaha U.S. bLU cRU road racers will be available for autographs at their Team Transporters during the Dunlop Paddock Autograph Session on Saturday from 12:45 to 1:45 PM, and then, again on Sunday during the Dunlop Hot Pit Walk & Autograph Session on pit lane from 12:40 to 1:30 PM.

Cameron and Josh from Monster Energy/Yamalube/Yamaha Factory Racing, Garrett and JD from Monster Energy/Yamalube/Y.E.S./Graves/Yamaha, and the other bLU cRU riders will all be on hand, along with the Monster Energy and Y.E.S. Umbrella Girls.

CYCLE WORLD’S HAYDEN GILLIM WINS BUFFALO CHIP TT RACE

~ Sturgis Motorcycle Rally Event Crowns Hayden Gillim Winner of Flat-Track Race ~

IRVINE, Calif. – (August 9, 2017) On Sunday, Cycle World Suzuki’s Hayden Gillim secured a first-place finish in the American Flat Track Singles class of the Buffalo Chip TT, presented by Indian Motorcycle. Gillim, currently touring the United States for Cycle World’s “Man in a Van with a Plan” editorial series, was in South Dakota for the race as part of opening weekend of the 77th annual Sturgis Motorcycle Rally.

To follow Gillim’s travels, the latest episodes and articles of “Man in a Van with a Plan” can be seen on the Cycle World website, here: http://www.cycleworld.com/man-in-van-with-plan

“Hayden has amazing skills on any motorcycle but he’s really becoming a force in American Flat Track with three straight TT victories,” said Mark Hoyer, editor-in-chief of Cycle World magazine. “His TT wins really embody the spirit of Man in a Van with a Plan–a young American racer traveling around the country roadracing in the MotoAmerica championship and picking up victories in flat track. It’s the classic American racing story and Cycle World is proud to share the video series with fans.”

Gillim, riding a Suzuki RM-Z450, the only Suzuki in the class, started fast, giving the packed audience at the Buffalo Chip Campground a thrilling performance on the two-right-turn course, which featured the series’ first-ever right-hand Turn One. Earlier this year, Gillim was also victorious at the Springfield TT, and he will be competing later this week in MotoAmerica Superstock 1000 racing in Sonoma, Calif.

Fueling Super Scavenger Oil Pump for Twin Power

Thanks for a well written thought out review. Last week my new build with 3k on it started making a grinding noise from the timing cover. Last winter we took a 96 and pushed it up to 107 had the bottom end welded balanced and blueprinted I love this 2010 Roadglide and this thing honks. The tec reported back that a push rod was a little out of wack and it was no big deal and all looked good on the timing side.I told him to order out a fueling cam plate and oil pump I pick it up this weekend . Call it paid up insurance thanks again. Vince

BIKERNET STURGIS-STOLEN WORD OF THE DAY–

fructify [fruhk-tuh-fahy, froo k-, frook-]
verb
1.
to bear fruit; become fruitful: With careful tending the plant will fructify.
2. to make fruitful or productive; fertilize: warm spring rains fructifying the earth.

QUOTES

… his intellect is not replenished; he is only an animal, only sensible in the duller parts: And such barren plants are set before us that we thankful should be (Which we of taste and feeling are) for those parts that do fructify in us more than he.
— William Shakespeare, Love’s Labour’s Lost, 1598

ORIGIN

Fructify comes from Middle English fructifien from Old French fructifier. It ultimately derives from Latin fructificare. It entered English in the late 13th century or early 14th century.

“He just roared right in on his Road King!” said a motorcyclist waiting for his FREE exhaust install to finish at Samson Exhaust.

“I saw the sign on the side of the building that said EVERYTHING UP TO 70% OFF and a weirdo in a flag cape standing in the wind, and had to stop by. I’m glad I did!” said another motorcyclist.

Murica Man’s identity has yet to be revealed.

BIKERNET OVERSEAS REPORT– Eicher Royal Enfield Overtakes Bajaj Auto To Become India’s Most Valued Two-Wheeler Maker

What’s worked in favour of Eicher Motors.

FROM BLOOMBERG

Eicher Motors Ltd. has overtaken Bajaj Auto Ltd. to become India’s largest two-wheeler company by market capitalisation.

The maker of Royal Enfield motorcycles is valued at Rs 85,580 crore as of Tuesday. That compares with Rs 81,750 crore for Bajaj Auto.

Bajaj Auto shares have underperformed over the last six months after both domestic sales and exports came under pressure. The Rajiv Bajaj-led company saw demand fall in its premium bike segment. Besides, it has no presence in the scooters segment. Bajaj Auto’s realisations were also impacted by a stronger rupee.

In contrast, a double-digit volume growth in Royal Enfield sales worked in favour of Eicher Motors. Its order book remained healthy despite disruption due to demonetization and the Goods and Services Tax. The company’s commercial vehicles segment also saw a recovery.

Bajaj was a top contender to buy Ducati from German car maker after Hero MotoCorp India and Royal Enfield India decided to not pursue the high stakes deal.

BIKERNET BREAKING NEWS FOR VETERANS– Great News for NJ Veterans Who Ride

ABATE of the Garden State has been trying for almost 10 years to get a license plate for our military veterans who ride motorcycles. There are several options available for cars and trucks but there has never been a veteran plate for motorcycles. Well, it has finally happened! We worked with legislators to introduce a bill which creates a motorcycle plate for any honorably discharged NJ veteran. The bill passed both houses on June 22, 2017 and was signed into law on August 7. At the current time, the New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission (MVC) is still developing the procedures and actual costs for obtaining one of these plates and they are not yet available. We will inform you when and how you can get one for your motorcycle as soon as we have all the details. More information to follow, so please stay tuned!
