COOKY BAKING SUNDAY POST

Hey,

This is going to be wild. I’m scrambling on the post while this afternoon a gang is coming over to bake cookies. At the same time Kevin is coming over to bend tubing and Jeremiah will interrupt progress to have us fix his D&D muffler.

Its carbon fiber shell D&D exhaust was held together with aluminum rivets. You’ll see in the tech. The rivets got loose and their tacks to hold the baffle together couldn’t handle the strain. We tore it apart last night and I tacked the baffle back together.

Jeremiah bought a piece of 16 gage 4-inch tubing and made a new shell. We’ll weld it back together today and get him back on the road.

Then it’s back to building the World’s Fastest Trike.

Let’s hit the news:

Ultimate Biker Makeover Winner; Karen Anderson Says She Has Much To Be Thankful For–2018 found the Garage-Girls celebrating their 10th anniversary of the Ultimate Biker Makeover. Contestants (Girls and Guys) were asked to submit a 600 words or less essay – describing why they are most in need of a biker makeover along with a photo. Deadline for entries was June 22nd 2018.

Submissions were narrowed down to the final four by selected judges from Garage-Girls. From there, the judges had to make the tough decision of who they felt most deserved the Ultimate Biker Makeover.

Karen’s story of powering through not only one type of cancer diagnosis and treatment, but 4 was pretty compelling. How does one get through a blow like that? We all just couldn’t get over how tough this must have been for Karen, but were happy to read that riding her motorcycle to chemo and radiation was what empowered her through it all. This confirmed to us all that we needed to help this woman stay out riding on the road. Riding was how she was surviving.

Karen has had some time for this all to sink in, her prizes showed up and she got straight to work installing them on her bike. We asked Karen to give us an update on her life since winning the Ultimate Biker Makeover, here is what she shared with us.

“On August 11th, I was standing in a public parking lot when I found my email telling me that I was selected as the winner of the GG Ultimate Biker Makeover. I screamed, and laughed, and danced around like I was six years old, instead of going on 60!

Just 4 days later, Spectro Oils started the parade of prizes that showed up at my door with everything I needed for my fall tune up!

I had never installed a new fairing on a bike before, and I was so filled with satisfaction and accomplishment when I finished, that I was doing the happy dance in my open garage, all by myself! I am sure if the neighbors were watching, that they would have assumed I was even more eccentric than they originally thought.

I love the new look that my motorcycle has now. I had always hoped to add these finishing details, but never could allocate the funds. These prizes have really completed the vision I had for my bike in my dreams. My bike’s performance has improved with the new air cleaner: no more backfiring! And installing the fairing certainly helps keep the cold autumn wind off my chest!

I am so grateful and excited, to have been chosen as the winner of this year’s contest, that I tell anyone who will listen how awesome Garage Girls and your sponsors are! I am humbled by the extent of the prizes, and I am walking much taller in my new Harley Davidson boots, instead of my old, beat up hand-me downs!

I was a little embarrassed telling my own story to win a contest to only benefit myself. But the actual writing of my story, and having been considered “worthy”, has more than made up for my original reluctance! I would certainly encourage every woman to go for the chance to get “Hooked UP” by the Ultimate Biker Makeover. Along with the confidence that being chosen brings, getting down & dirty in your own garage, wrenching on your own bike, is so satisfactory! I love it when guys ask who did the work on my ride, and I simply smugly answer, ME!”

QUICK, OPEN THE BANDIT’S CANTINA BAD JOKE LIBRARY– The Texas Dwarf

A dwarf from Texas was experiencing constant pain in his testicle
area.

The dwarf went to the doctor and told him about his problem.

The doctor told him to drop his pants and he would have a look.

The dwarf dropped his pants. The doctor stood him up onto the examining table, and started to examine him. The doctor put one finger under his left testicle and told the dwarf to turn his head and cough, the usual method to check for a hernia.

“Hmm…” mumbled the doctor, and as he put his finger under the
right testicle, he asked the dwarf to cough again.

“Aha!” said the doctor, and reached for his surgical scissors.
Snip-snip-snip-snip on the right side… then snip-snip-snip-snip on
the left side.

The dwarf was so scared he was afraid to look, but
noted with amazement that the snipping did not hurt.

The doctor then told the dwarf to walk around the examining room
to see if his testicles still hurt.

The dwarf was absolutely delighted as he walked around and discovered his testicles were no longer aching.

The doctor said, “How does that feel now?”

The dwarf replied, “Perfect Doc, and I didn’t even feel it. What did you do?”

The doctor replied “I cut two inches off the top of your cowboy boots.”

Under the Influence of the Justice System – A Father’s Story

This is a story about my twenty-year-old son. To some readers this may be an article that smacks of stupidity and privilege. It may be that both are true but the real point is how hopelessly out of whack law enforcement and related penalties are with the real world.

On a Saturday night John exited a fraternity house at a small, rural southern college and got in his car to drive a short distance to his dorm. This proved to be an epically stupid decision. Unbeknownst to him the local police had staked out the fraternity for just such a situation. Before he even left his parking spot he was approached and asked if he had been drinking. He had.

At this point my son was presented with a choice. On the one hand, the college has an honor code and lying is cause for immediate expulsion. The police know this and report all incidents to the college. On the other, the state has a zero-tolerance policy for underage drinking and driving. Hobson’s Choice: Answer yes and get a DUI, answer no and risk expulsion from the school without recourse. Taught not to lie, my son answered yes, he’d been drinking.

The probable cause for approaching him? He was a college student leaving a fraternity house at night, so he must have been drinking.

A subsequent search of the car turned up some beers and a bag that appeared to have trace amounts of marijuana. He was charged with a DUI, underage possession of alcohol, misdemeanor possession of a controlled substance and “weapons” possession. In the rural south travelling with your hunting bow in your car isn’t generally considered a crime but in this case it was.

Did I fail to concede that my son had made some seriously poor decisions?

I can afford a lawyer, so I hired one and we began to discuss whether there were any ways to reduce the charges. The Blood Alcohol Content (BAC) test came back over the 0.02 level for juveniles but the drug blood test was negative meaning he’d been drinking but if he’d ever smoked pot, it wasn’t in the past two weeks. The lab concluded the bag had contained marijuana but there wasn’t enough to weigh. There was literally nothing in the bag. The weight of the seized drugs was recorded a dash. The beers in the car were undeniable and the “weapons” charge remained a bit of an enigma.

At the assigned court date, my son caught a break. The arresting officer failed to show. She quit the police force before the trial, reportedly telling one of the kids at school that she didn’t sign up for busting them for drinking at frat parties. She left to take a position fighting “real” crime.

We thought we might be out of the woods completely. Dismissal of the underage possession of alcohol was straight-forward but the district attorney was clear that she was going to need a conviction. With four charges, she refused to let him completely off the hook; she insisted on either the drug charge or the DUI. John had to cut a deal, so he chose to plead guilty to the one charge for which he was arguably most innocent, possession of a controlled substance.

The magistrate explained how “lucky” my son was not to be charged with a DUI. A DUI charge would have meant suspension of his license for a year, a year’s worth of probation, increased insurance expenses and, perhaps more importantly, once on your record, a DUI in that state can never be expunged. It sticks with you for life. If ever asked on a job application, loan document or other form if you’ve ever been convicted of a crime, you have to answer yes. The charge my son pled guilty to, misdemeanor drug possession, required a one-year probation and, after five years, can be expunged from his record.

The seized weapon, my son’s very expensive, left-hand compound hunting bow? That became the property of the police through civil forfeiture. The court document says, “weapon forfeited.” I can only assume somewhere in the rural south there is a left-handed sheriff’s deputy extremely pleased with his new bow. I hope he shoots himself.

There are so many things wrong with what happened to my son. The police profiled him to approach him—a clear violation of the Fourth Amendment of the Constitution. Nevertheless, he’d had a beer, made a bad decision and thus was guilty. The possession of a controlled substance charge was a joke—the lab could test the residue but there was nothing for the lab to measure. The seizure of the bow was classic ‘policing for profit’ abuse. The bow was in no way linked to a crime.

The school, whose honor code trumps the Constitution’s Fifth Amendment protection not to bear witness against oneself, called my son before the dean within two days of being charged. His one-year suspension was handed down another two days later.

It is a fact that underage drinking occurs across the United States. Research shows that as much as 80 percent of college students drink and 60 percent drink “regularly.” Rather than making our kids rationalize “criminal” behavior, our laws related to alcohol need to be changed to reflect reality.

Whether allowing just beer and wine for our young adults age 18 to 21 or, as Louisiana is considering, creating a ‘drinking certificate’ for 19 and 20-year-olds that pass an alcohol class, something needs to be done to stop the criminalization of alcohol consumption where no harm was done to oneself or others. Further, while I don’t condone drinking and driving, the penalties are now so far out of context with the deed-in John’s case not an inch driven on public roads-that they would be laughable if the consequences were not so serious.

Finally, just as an aside, take it from me, don’t try to go to Canada with the family if you have a misdemeanor drug possession conviction (or a DUI for that matter). Canadian border agents will deny you entry as “criminally inadmissible,” a Canadian term that applies for 10 years after the completion of your sentence. It is a humiliating experience to be stopped at the border and be told you’re an undesirable.

NEWS FROM THE CLIMATE DEPOT–
IPCC’s Special Report Slammed By Eminent Climate Scientist

By Paul Homewood

The significance of this new GWPF report by Prof Ray Bates of the Meteorology and Climate Centre at University College Dublin cannot really be overstated:

GWPF Briefing 36

London, 20 December: One of Europe’s most eminent climate scientists has documented the main scientific reasons why the recent UN climate summit failed to welcome the IPCC’s report on global warming of 1.5°C.
In a paper published today by the Global Warming Policy Foundation Professor Ray Bates of University College Dublin explains the main reasons for the significant controversy about the latest IPCC report within the international community.

The IPCC’s Special Report on a Global Warming of 1.5°C (SR1.5) was released by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) in advance of the recent COP24 meeting in Katowice, Poland, but was not adopted by the meeting due to objections by a number of governments.

Professor Bates examines some key aspects of the SR1.5 report. He assesses if the IPCC report exhibits a level of scientific rigor commensurate with the scale of its extremely costly and highly disruptive recommendation that carbon emissions be reduced to zero by mid-century.

The paper concludes that such a level of scientific rigor is not present in the report. Specifically, SR1.5 is deficient in scientific rigor in the following respects:

? It departs from the IPCC’s Fifth Assessment Report in conveying an increased sense of planetary emergency without giving rigorous scientific reasons for doing so.

? It fails to communicate to policymakers a considerable body of important observationally-based research evidence that has accumulated since the Fifth Assessment which reduces the sense of a looming emergency.

? It fails to communicate important information made public by climate modellers since the Fifth Assessment regarding the empirical tuning of models to achieve desired results.

The paper concludes that, in view of these deficiencies, the SR1.5 report does not merit being regarded by policymakers as a scientifically rigorous document.

“There is much recent observational and scientific evidence that the IPCC report has failed to include and which supports a more considered mitigation strategy than the extreme and unrealistic measures called for in the SR1.5 report,” said Prof Bates.
In the foreword, Dr. Edward Walsh, the Founding President of the University of Limerick and former chairman of Ireland’s National Council for Science, Technology and Innovation said:

“The importance of adherence to the highest scientific standards on the part of the IPCC in its periodic reports can hardly be over-emphasised. Governments rely on the scientific objectivity of these reports to make crucial decisions related to the economies of their countries and the wellbeing of their people. Policymakers should carefully reflect on the significant deficiencies identified in the report before considering implementing its recommendations.”

WOW—Life is amazing then you die and it keeps on being amazing. It’s wild how we look at life and our accomplishments. Some of us scramble daily to do something, including creative endeavors. We’ve accomplished so much as humans.

We need to realize that we can relax, take it easy and celebrate each day as if it was Christmas.

Do what you truly love and ride whatever you want, whenever you want– Anything else can wait.

It’s all cool and were just going to school.

May your holidays be magnificent.

Ride free forever,

–Bandit
