CRAZY FOR HAVING THE BLUES SUNDAY POST

Hey,

It’s a holiday weekend and I’m scrambling to write a couple of book chapters. I returned from Bonneville to discover a missed HORSE deadline, and holiday offers on my computer, as if an evil haunting omen. Fuck, it’s the first of September, not November. Then there’s Las Vegas Bikefest at the end of the month with Branscombe Richmond playing his heart out at the Sahara. Plus there’s the El Camino Antique Swap Meet in LA, and the word from Admiral Hamster to meet at the Rainbow room later this month. Not to mention the Motorcycle Cannon Rally is due to kick off in five stinkin’ days.

I don’t know about your area, but for a down economy, there’s a lot going on, and it doesn’t stop. The secret subject for my first Motorbooks novel effort was just release from federal prison. I lost 90 days of no communication while he was in solitary confinement, then Bonneville ate another couple of weeks, and I’m feeling the pressure. Let’s hit the news, then I’ll fill you in on my book progress and the Bikernet feature line-up for next week.

BANDIT’S CANTINA WORD OF THE DAY–
shenanigan shuh-NAN-i-guhn, noun:
1. Mischief; prankishness.
2. Remarks intended to deceive; deceit. Often used in the plural.
For his latest shenanigan, he had been sentenced to three days in the boiler room.
— Jim Holland, Escaping the Underground
But he couldn’t get traction, couldn’t win over the local GOP establishment, and eventually fell victim to another shenanigan.
— Ralph Routon, “Primary’s missing ingredient,” Colorado Springs Indpendent, July, 2010.
Shenanigan’s origin is a mystery. The first recorded usage was in California. Possible sources for the term include Spanish, German and Iroquois.

MOTORCYCLE CANNONBALL LAUNCH JUST DAYS AWAY–
Geeze Louise – I mean Bandit — with only a few days to go until the start of the Motorcycle Cannonball, so much continues to happen, I hardly know where to start. While lots of the entrants are putting the finishing touches on their scoots, there is also plenty of fantastic artwork coming our way, rock stars meeting us along the road, and so much more. Here’s just a sample of what’s up – Felicia Morgan, Communications Director, Motorcycle Cannonball

The Motorcycle Cannonball crew has hit the road for Kitty Hawk, NC for the convergence of vintage riders that will be making the journey of a lifetime! Lonnie Isam, Jr, the fearless leader of the pack for the pre-1916 Cannonball ride is heading back from the 39th Annual AMCA Fall National and Swap Meet where he was joined by several of the Cannonball riders. Jon Szalay, rider #44, was there in Davenport, Iowa with his 1911 H-D, which was still being worked on. Lonnie reported that Jon put the engine in backwards and it still ran. Obviously, the guys were all good heartedly haranguing each other and setting the tone for the upcoming 17-day odyssey the 53 Cannonball riders are about to embark upon.

Motorcycle Cannonball rider # 85, Matt Olsen, was also on hand and his 1914 Sears was being tuned. The 9-hp Dreadnaught engine is original, but Matt has fabricated many of the other parts for the bike. He was seen lapping the grounds on the old/new machine in Davenport, getting some practice in before the big coast-to-coast ride that leaves Kitty Hawk on September 10, 2010.

The Cannonball’s route master, John Classen, is en route to monitor the road conditions since hurricane Eric’s arrival on the coastal community. John will ride the Stage 1 between Kitty Hawk and Greenville, NC for the safety of our riders and to fine tune the route for any changes that may be necessary.

Painter David Uhl and photographer Michael Lichter are putting their legendary talents together to create some unique Motorcycle Cannonball artwork, some of which will be available to the public. And sculptor Jeff Decker has put the finishing touches on the one-of-kind bronze sculptures that will serve as the top Cannonball prize for one lucky rider. We’re really excited that rock-and-roll legend Pat Simmons (Doobie Brothers guitarist) will be joining us on the road. Pat’s wife Cris Sommer Simmons is rider in the Cannonball.

As for the rest of the gang, we’re slaving away to make sure this great ride is accessible to everyone through the virtual world of computers. Be sure to check out the daily posts, pictures, and videos from the road on the website www.motorcyclecannonball.com The tallies of rides scores will be available each day, provided the internet connections still work in the remote backwoods areas of any of the 11 States we’ll journey through, and nobody messes with the intergalactic airwaves, thereby preventing us from our daily posts.

Stay tuned sports fans; it’s going to be a bumpy and fun filled adventure.

2010 CATALINA ISLAND GRAND PRIX
RACE OF THE CENTURY SET TO MAKE HISTORY, AGAIN!–
9/2/10 – Avalon, CA – Once the biggest motorcycle race on on the West Coast, the legendary Catalina Grand Prix is set to make history, again. California motorcycle enthusiast Vinnie Mandzak is totally committed to promoting the 2010 Catalina Island GP, as he has been since receiving authorization to produce “the most unique motorcycle race in 50 years.”

“Despite what a few naysayers may have said, there is no question in my mind that this race is happening this December,” insists Mandzak. “Our plans are moving forward and I can’t wait to watch the first wave of racers roll off the starting line on December 4th!”

By all indications, Mandzak has the cooperation from state and local government agencies, no small feat in itself. He also has the full support of the Catalina Island business community who recognize the event as a prime opportunity to share their little slice of heaven to a global audience of racers and fans. A total of 800 racers are expected to participate over two days of racing.

“We’ve done our homework and we are managing our event the correct way,” says Mandzak. “I am 100% totally committed to 2010 Catalina Island Grand Prix.” Race classifications and registration will be made available by mid-September at http://www.thecatalinagrandprix.com/.

BIKERNET NEWS COMMENT–You just posted a picture of my buddy Karl & the Cheeky Chaps girls on your homepage and made his day!

I met Karl Over a decade ago at the Broken Spoke and every year we used to dance the entire set of Jimmy Van Zant and wouldn’t leave the dance floor until the half hour Freebird finally ended. Karl has to use arm braces to stand or walk, so when we dance, he just hangs on to me. He is from Minnesota, and has a bad ass trike that he rides over every year.

There was no Lynard Skynard music to be found this year, so I introduced him to all of my girlfriends, and he seemed to be having a good time when I snapped that pic! Thanx for posting it. He noticed!

BIKERNET SAFETY WARNING–
I had a flat tire on I-805 yesterday; so I pulled over, got out of the car and opened my trunk.

I took out my cardboard men, unfolded them and stood them at the rear of my car facing oncoming traffic. They look so lifelike you wouldn’t believe it!!!

Just as I had hoped, cars started slowing down looking at the men which made it much safer for me to work on the side of the road!

People honked and waved, and it wasn’t long before a state police cruiser pulled up behind me. He wanted to know what the heck I was doing so I calmly explained that I was changing my flat. He told me he could see that, but demanded to know what the heck my cardboard men were doing standing at the rear of my car.

I couldn’t believe he didn’t know… SO I told him.

Well DUH… I explained to the angry trooper…

They’re my Emergency Flashers!!!!

I go to court in August.
(Damn troopers. No sense of humor. )

HARLEY-DAVIDSON ADVERTISING SCOOP–I think one problem is H-D wants to reach out to lots of small groups — women, Hispanics, young riders, etc. — rather than go with an over-arching theme. My agency friend says these targeted campaigns are a pain in the ass, a lot of work, and don’t return as much revenue. So CL said no thanks. And they are billing less. Also, note that H-D has 10 other agencies serving it right now.

OFFICIAL BIKERNET COPY EDITOR REPORTS IN– Sorry about your bad luck at the salt, but there’s always next time.

Maybe the attached pic, a tutorial on how to wash your bike, will cheer you up. Taken at the Sufferin’ Bastard Tavern in Colorado Springs a couple weeks ago.

Had a great time up in Cheyenne last weekend, seeing old friends, swapping lies, and drinking beer. On the way back through the plains of eastern Colorado, one of the state’s finest lit me up but let me off with a warning to slow it down a bit. Damn hard to keep the needle on 65 on those wide-open, two-lane blacktops when your scoot wants to purr at 75-80, don’t ya know?

BIKERNET READER SEARCHES FOR JUNK– Do you know of any local HD Junk Yards within Los Angeles? I’m looking for some used parts. I need some struts that will work on a 200 rear tire conversion for my ’04 Night Train.

I had bought some Heartland struts on ebay that were for a 240 set up, and I even got a Heartland Passenger Seat. I saved money, but now found out that they really don’t fit. I had one machinist look at them to see if we can shorten them, however, it will weaken the struts and possible collapse while riding. My mechanic tried to see if he can do it, but finally came to a decision that this would jeopardize the strength of the struts too. Kind of sucks since I have the passenger seat that works with the struts, but the struts do not fit.

–Mario

The man in Los Angeles for junk is Tim, at Negotiable, in Riverside. Here’s his e-mail address. Also there’s a couple of serious swapmeets each month, on in Long Beach and one in Pomona. –Wrench

Bonneville 2010: 6 Bikes, 5 Records and Lots of Amazing Memories –Team Klock Werks took six bikes and came home with five new unofficial AMA
records for the 2010 Speed Trials by BUB event at the legendary Bonneville
Salt Flats. These records are unofficial at this time – but Team Klock
Werks’ motors have been measured so we are waiting for final verification.

Since land speed records are an average of two passes a rider must first
make a down run that has to qualify, or be higher than the current record in
the class, and then run a return pass in the opposite direction. The
average speed of the two passes determines a new record or not.

Bikes are put into a class based on the frame, size of motor and type of
fuel. Riders are not separated by gender or age, and records signify the
highest average for that class of bike ever recorded.

Here is a run-down of the accomplishments of Team Klock Werks:

Erika Cobb, daughter of Brian and Laura klock (19 years old)
Racing with Team Klock Werks since 2007.
Bike: 2003 Buell XB9, #14 “Boo Yah”
Class: 1000 P-PP
Record: 135.135 mph
Personal best on the Buell 138.495 mph

Karlee Cobb, daughter of Brian and Laura Klock (16 years old)
Riding for Team klock Werks since 2008
Bike: 2006 HD Dyna “Dyna-MITE”
Class: 1650 M-PBG
Record: 151.754 mph
Personal best: 155.709 mph!

Chris Degen, Klock Werks Service Manager
Bike: 2007 HD Dyna “Dyna-Mo”
Class: 1650 P-PP
Record: 127.571 mph
Personal best: 131.494 mph
First time rider

Michelle Mielke, wife of Klock Werks Project Manager, Joe Mielke
Michelle has raced with Team Klock Werks since 2008
Bike: 2002 Yamaha Warrior XV1700 “Warrior”
Class: MPS-P 2000
Record: 143.725 mph
Personal best: 145 mph

Tiadra Simmermon, daughter of Joe and Michelle Mielke (13 years old) First
time rider!
Bike: 2004 Kawasaki EX250 Ninja “Lil Ninja”
Class: M-P 250
Personal best: 94.760 mph!

Laura Klock (the mom of the group) took her personal bike she rides on the
street out to the salt. While not a purpose built race bike, the team
achieved the status of being the first to attempt passes on a victory vision
Bike: 2008 Victory Vision touring bike “Any Road”
Highest speed: 130 mph
This is Laura’s 5th year on the salt, where she is best known for piloting
the team’s “World’s Fastest Bagger” three years running.

Overall personal best on WFB: 161 mph
Laura was excited to watch her daughters achieve such amazing personal goals
this year!

Erika Cobb – Karlee Cobb allowed her sister to ride her HD Dyna in order to
try to achieve a personal goal of 150 mph at this meet. Erika was able to
achieve that, therefore each sister received their 150 mph medallion, and
each got a record in different classes on the same bike! An incredible
history making feat! Their mom, Laura Klock, received her 150 mph goal in
2008. The Mother-Daughter-Daughter trio were able to take photos each with
the 150 medallion at this event! Photos coming soon!
Bike: 2006 HD Dyna
Class: 1650 M-PBF
Record: 143.543 mph
Personal best: 150.239 mph

The Dyna-MITE bike the sisters (Erika and Karlee) shared was built in just 5
days following another team cancelling Karlee’s ride and not bringing their
bike to the salt. Therefore, a used bike was purchased and equipped for
racing. Karlee first rode this bike on the salt and achieved a 150 MPH
record in just her first 4 passes!

First time pilot Chris Degen commented, “People would have a new found
respect if they could all be given the chance to ride on the salt. Its
different than other speed experiences in racing in that you have to hold
the bike at sustained high speeds for such a length of time. My bike was
maxed out for a two mile stretch. You have to average the record speed for
a whole mile on a surface much like a hard packed gravel road.” He added,
“Its amazing that those young ladies like Karlee and Erika can hang on to a
bike without a fairing at speeds consistently over 150 miles an hour at a
time. Its a workout – I really respect that.”

The Klock Werks Team thanks their sponsors including major sponsor
Interstate Batteries. The Team was complimented continually on representing
the future of land speed racing with introducing their family and young
people, all while celebrating the rich history of the sport. The Team
reports that many greats were present on the salt this year including Warner
Riley, John Yeats, and Denis Manning (who hosts the event). These three
greats also celebrated 40 years since they set a land speed record with a
Streamliner for Harley Davidson motorcycles at 265 mph in 1970. You could
run into any one of these greats while waiting in line for your pass at the
legendary track this year.

Laura, Erika and Karlee received the honor of being named the FIRST mother-daughter-daughter trio in history of land speed racing to hold records at the same time in 2008. The Team has been blessed with much success in land speed racing over the last five years with many records.

Klock Werks Race Team: where passion and fuel mix!

BANDIT’S CANTINA FAMILY COUNSELING SEMINAR–A woman takes a lover home during the day while her husband is at work.

Her 9-year old son comes home unexpectedly, he sees them and hides in
the bedroom closet to watch.

The woman’s husband also comes home.
She puts her lover in the closet, not realizing that the little boy is
in there already.

The little boy says, ‘Dark in here.’
The man says, ‘Yes, it is.’
Boy: ‘I have a baseball.’
Man: ‘That’s nice’
Boy: ‘Want to buy it?’
Man: ‘No, thanks.’
Boy: ‘My Dad’s outside.’
Man: ‘OK, how much?’
Boy: ‘$250’

In the next few weeks, it happens again that the boy and the lover are
in the closet together…

Boy: ‘Dark in here.’
Man: ‘Yes, it is.’
Boy: ‘I have a baseball glove.’
The lover, remembering the last time,
asks the boy, How much?’
Boy: ‘$750’
Man: ‘Sold.’

A few days later, theDad says to the boy , ‘Grab your glove, let’s go
outside and have a game of catch.’
The boy says, ‘I can’t, I sold my baseball and my glove.’

The Dad asks, ‘How much did you sell them for?’
Boy: ‘$1,000’

The Dad says, ‘That’s terrible to over charge your friends like
that…that is way more than those two things cost. I’m taking you to
church, to confession.’

They go to the church and the Dad makes the little boy sit in the
confessional booth and closes the door.

The boy says, ‘Dark in here…’
The priest says, ‘Don’t start that shit again; you’re in my closet
now…

BARTELS Harley-Davidson to unveil $1 million bike Oct. 21– Harleys have always had a reputation for being high-ticket bikes, but Bartels Harley-Davidson in Marina Del Rey, Calif., is jumping the shark with the one-of-a-kind, $1 million bike it will unveil Oct. 21.

The dealership will unveil artist Jack Armstrong’s “Cosmic Starship” billed as “the world’s first and only million-dollar Harley and the only motorcycle Armstrong will ever paint” with a gala event.

“For me as an artist, Harley is James Dean, Brando, Elvis and Steve McQueen, and is more American than ice cream. To paint a million-dollar Harley is legendary, like the bike,” the artist says.

Armstrong is known as the creator of the unique painting style called “Cosmic Extensionalism,” combining extreme colors and textures. Words appear in his paintings when viewed from different angles.

The “Cosmic Starship” Harley Davidson world press red carpet event is scheduled for 7 p.m. Oct. 21 at the dealership.

For those of you who don’t live in the South, and think we are a bunch of uncivilized red necks – well, it’s simply not true!
In fact, we have ladies’ groups all over the South that meet regularly to discuss current events and develop needed home-skills.
For example, this photo was recently taken at a ladies group meeting in Texas, where they were discussing the elections coming up in November 2010 and in 2012.

State Department Squirms
On Garand And Carbine Imports A lot of things have changed in the federal government since President Harry S. Truman put his famous “the buck stops here” sign on his desk. This week, Fox News reported that it couldn’t get a straight answer from the State Department about its decision in March to disapprove the importation of more than 800,000 M1 Garand rifles and M1 carbines from South Korea.

According to Fox, the State Department claimed that the rifles might be used “for illicit purposes.” But when asked to explain, State passed the buck to the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, which passed it to the Department of Justice, which passed it back to State.

The anti-gun Brady Campaign didn’t hesitate to give Fox an answer, however. “Guns that can take high-capacity magazines are a threat to public safety,” the group’s Dennis Henigan told reporter Maxim Lott.

BAKER LABOR DAY IN REVERSE–In Honor of Labor Day BAKER Drivetrain will be offering free shipping throughout the store on all orders no minimum purchase required. Enter promo code “shipfree” at checkout. Plus, be sure to checkout the all new BAKER F5R reverse, now available online!

Add Reverse To Your Stock 5-Speed or BAKER DD6 With The All New BAKER F5R Available Now Online!
MSRP: $1695.00
We introduced the F6R kit, or Factory 6-speed Reverse, for the 2007-later H-D 6-speed bike. The biggest advantage of the F6R is the ability to engage reverse from one switch in the handle bar area without the need to reach down near the hot exhaust. Minimal clutch modulation is required in reverse to launch the vehicle due to the short gear ratio. We finally got off our duff and are doing the same for the 1990-2006 5-speed bikes. We call it the F5R or Factory 5-speed Reverse.
The contents in the F5R kit are similar to the F6R; door, side cover, countershaft, reverse gear train and hardware. Existing gear set (except countershaft), shift system and top cover will be re-used with the F5R installation. The F5R will be appreciated by those with heavy GVW applications (trikes, side cars and trailers) or those with compromised leg mobility.
Features:
– Reverse selection controlled by aircraft grade shifting solenoid & bell crank assembly. Electronic reverse safety lock-out solenoid must first be energized with the provided handle bar or inner fairing mounted momentary toggle switch. Shift safely into reverse every time!
– No need to use the starter motor for reverse maneuvers.
– Includes ready to install solenoids and neutral safety switch wiring.
– Reverse can only be selected when bike is in neutral by tying the solenoid function to the neutral switch on the transmission.
– No case modifications required for reverse gearset installation.

DOCTORS FROM BIKERNET MEDICAL CENTER DEMAND SOME REST– Rest is as important as physical activity for general health. Identify periods during the day when you can be passive, without stimulation, doing nothing, and make time for them. Consider the following when planning rest into your schedule:
1. Try to get into the habit of napping: ten to twenty minutes in the afternoon, preferably lying down in a darkened room.
2. Spend some time outdoors as often as you can to get exposure to bright, natural light. If you are concerned about harmful effects of solar radiation, do it before ten in the morning or after three in the afternoon and use sunscreen.
3. Try to give yourself about an hour in dim light before you go to sleep at night. Lower the lighting in your house and bedroom. If other members of the household object, wear sunglasses.
4. Pay attention to sleep hygiene: all the details of lifestyle, including intake of caffeine and bedroom design, that affect the quality of sleep. When you are ready to go to sleep, try to keep your bedroom completely dark.

Don’t miss next Sunday’s Daily Tip for five more quick tips for better rest.

AUSTRALIAN BBQ TOTING BIKER CHARGED– New Zealander Michael Wiles, has been fined for riding his motorcycle along Melbourne Australia’s Eastern freeway while ensconced in a barbecue. A passing motorist snapped a photo of Wiles aboard his motorcycle looking through the grill of a barbecue he’d found abandoned on the side of the road. Needing an outdoor grill at home, Wiles was reluctant to leave the barbecue behind and decided to figure out a way to transport it on his motorcycle. Not only was Wiles charged with careless driving after the aforementioned photo was published in the media, but it turns out the grill was a dud—perhaps the reason it was abandoned to begin with.
If you’ve ever travelled to a developing nation, you may have noticed all manner of things being carried on single track-vehicles—including families of four on 50 cc scooters—but the last time we checked Australia is considered by most to be a first world nation; certainly the court magistrate who handled Wiles’ case thinks so. He was not impressed by the New Zealander’s third world motorcycling argument and handed him a $800 AUD ($748 CAD) fine—enough to buy a premium quality outdoor grill.
Afterwards Wiles was asked to shill for retail chain Barbecues Galore. He declined the offer.

HARLEY-DAVIDSON to open Beirut dealership– Harley-Davidson is set to open its a dealership in Beirut, Lebanon, next month.

The country is estimated to have 800 to 1,000 Harley ownes, who will be able to get parts locally once the dealership opens. It will be the Motor Co.’s first foothold in the Persian Gulf region.

Harley-Davidson opened a showroom in Lebanon more than 70 years ago, but the country lost its dealership 10 years ago, leaving riders to order parts from overseas, according to AME Info.

“The new showroom will offer bikers in the Levant everything they need to maintain their bikes. Advice, parts, latest bikes, services and technical support will be available,” GM Marwan Tarraf says. “The showroom will also serve as a base to run tours and events.”

The 10,764-square-foot showroom will include six service bays, Harley-trained mechanics, is scheduled to open in mid-September.

THE TRIUMPH REPORT FROM JIM MURILLO–Here are a few shots of my latest creation. It’s a ’68 500 T100R. This was my first Triumph when i was 18.
It now has a rebuilt engine, new paint, and i was able to use some of the original parts. The bike has about 3 miles on it now. It starts first kick every time.
I am selling the bike for $6,500.

THE END IS ONLY THE BEGINNING–I had a stellar notion for the ending, fulla deep meanings and updates, but I’m in dire need of a beer, and my list of Sunday Projects is growing. Sin Wu is still in San Fran cutting her hair like a lesbian and hanging with the Aussie Tat artist. The toured Alcatraz, and they’re headed for Monterey. I should be drunk and chasing local broads, but I’m stressing over book chapters, like a school kid late with his homework assignment.

I’m grappling with a plan to bring you teasers regarding this 1%er book, without giving away the club or the man’s identity. I keep pondering a workable direction. Thanks to the River Rat, we will bring you a wild story about a rider who rode from home to starting post for the Cannonball on a 1914. We have Bikernet Betsy’s Sturgis report and Humble is putting it together. I have a Balls bitchin bike feature which will be launched this week.
In the meantime I’m losing weight rapidly. There’s nothing to eat around here. I can’t go to the grocery store, goddamnit. I’ve got chapters to write.

Ride Forever,

–Bandit
