Hey,
This is a strange one. I recently started working with Chris Kranzler, since Sin Wu peeled out. Chris has been invaluable to all of our recent efforts. Last night she had a heart attack. She is also constantly tortured by the effects of MS. We are hanging on for her to recover.
The second issue comes from The Week Magazine under the heading, “The Best columns: The U.S. The article is titled “Big Brother in the Newsroom” by L. Gordon Crovitz (from the Wall Street Journal).
When journalists discovered that the Federal Communications Commission planned to study the internal practices of newrooms, said L. Gordon Crovitz, they were justifiably furious. Thanks to the First Amendment, “the government has no business meddling with journalism.” The FCC quickly dropped its study—and in one sense, that’s a pity. Had the government agents arrived in newsrooms asking pointed questions about “bias” and “who decides what stories get covered”—real topics on the FCC’s agenda—journalists might have gotten a taste of “the kind of government overreach every other industry routinely experiences.”
That’s exactly my contention went it comes to journalists touting Helmet Laws. If they had any respect for freedom, they would take a much more balanced approach. And there’s more to this equation. Think about the next time you are forced to deal with a government agency, say the DMV, OSHA, the EPA, and they give you heart ache over a new ordinance, and new threat, or a fine. Who is paying them to torture you? You are.
Let’s hit the news before I start drinking again.

EXCEPTIONAL $6.6 MILLION 1937 DELAHAYE 135 COMPETITION COURT TORPEDO ROADSTER TOPS RM’S RECORD-BREAKING AMELIA ISLAND SALE–The official auction house of the world renowned Amelia Island Concours d’Elegance, continued its record-setting 2014 auction calendar this weekend, achieving the company’s best-ever Amelia Island results at its 16th annual sale with a total of $35,947,500 and 97 percent of all lots sold. This represents a 34 percent increase over 2013 sale results while bidders hailed from 18 countries around the world with 20 percent representing new clientele.
The well-established sale lifted the gavel on 91 exceptional vehicles perfectly matched to the Amelia Island Concours venue, setting no less than seven world auction records before a standing-room only ballroom that exuded excitement for the diverse roster of cars crossing the podium. Top sale honors went to “Malcolm’s French Mistress”, the ultra-rare 1937 Delahaye 135 Competition Court Torpedo Roadster offered from a half century of ownership as the jewel of the esteemed Pray Collection. One of only two surviving short chassis examples and the only surviving example with its Géo Ham body tag, the showstopper achieved a world-record $6,600,000 to become the most valuable car ever sold during the Amelia Island weekend.
Additional top lots among the 16 offered from the Pray Collection include the impeccably pure 1958 BMW 507 Series II Roadster, which garnered a record-shattering $2,420,000, and a superbly authentic 1961 Ferrari 250 GT Series Cabriolet, which also sold very well at $1,760,000. Also joining the Pray Collection at the top of the sale list is the desirably equipped 1957 Mercedes-Benz 300 SL Roadster, originally owned by Hollywood actress Natalie Wood, which brought a fantastic $1,842,500.
“We could not be happier with the results of our 2014 Amelia Island sale,” says Gord Duff, Car Specialist, RM Auctions. “Despite the weather, our fantastic selection of cars and stylish presentation were showered with rave reviews from our international clientele. The Pray Collection certainly achieved the value it deserves, and we’re truly honored to have offered such an incredible group of cars for a family who have been friends of RM for decades.”
“The Pray family is thrilled with RM’s sale of Malcolm’s collection,” adds Philip Richter, family friend and trustee for the Pray Collection. “The tireless efforts of the entire team enabled a result that greatly exceeded all expectations. RM was the natural choice for the Pray Collection because their enthusiasm, professionalism, and attention to detail are traits that so reflect both the business and personal values of Malcolm Pray himself.”
Additional very notable sales of the day include a highly original and beautifully presented 1972 Ferrari 365 GTB/4 Daytona Berlinetta which sold for a strong $781,000, along with a show-condition and rally-ready 1939 Aston Martin 15/98 Short Chassis Open Sports which sold for an outstanding $616,000, well above its presale estimate. Also deserving of special mentions are a 1974 Iso Grifo 7-Liter and a 1972 Ferrari 365 GTC/4 which both generated spirited bidding battles and world auction record prices to sell for $440,000 and $335,500 respectively.

A QUICK, New Bikernet Reader Comment!– Bad Boys Saloon Hits Main Street Daytona
http://www.bikernet.com/pages/story_detail.aspx?id=11562
Seems the author of this article decided to skip a few very important details about how Lou came to be able to participate in the Master Plan for Bike Week 2014; as well as the fact that Mr. DeRosa once threatened to burn the very building he now owns through some creative paperwork with the former owner or how he is a defendant in multiple Civil actions over his antics with the former Mikey Love partner.
The fact that Mr. DeRosa has not been in business the required minimum number of days or even come close to being open for business the minimum number of hours required by both the City of Daytona Beach and the Chamber of Commerce to be able to be included in the master plan seems to have escaped this writer.
Not to mention the reports that Mr. DeRosa is selling alcohol which was sold to the former Mikey Love’s which Mr. DeRosa removed from the bar in trailer loads.
If you are going to introduce the new player on Main Street then at least tell the whole story and let your readers decide if they want to do business there, but don’t publish such dribble and avoid the hard cold facts that Mr. DeRosa by Daytona Beach own regulations should not have a single vendor outside his business during Bike Week 2014.

BIKERNET BAD JOKE LIBRARY OPEN WEEKENDS–Little Johnny asked his Mom what two words mean that kids at school were using …….. Pussy and Bitch. Mom inhaled sharply, but then said: “Oh, that’s easy.. A pussy is a cat, like our little Chico . A bitch is a female dog, like our Sandy ..” “Thanks, Mom.”
He then found his Dad out in the garage. “Dad, the guys at school are using words I don’t understand.” “What words, son?”
“Pussy and bitch. I asked Mom, but I don’t think she told me the right meanings.” Dad said: “Son, never ask your mother about these things, ask me instead. Let me explain it like this…”
He pulled a Playboy from his workbench, turned to the centerfold, drew a circle around the pubic area and said: “Son, everything inside the circle is pussy.”
“Okay, Dad. Then what’s a bitch?”
Dad replied: “Everything outside the circle.”

BIKERNET UNIVERSITY ENGLISH DEPARTMENT WEEKEND VOCABULARY LESSON–wayfarer WEY-fair-er, noun: a traveler, especially on foot.
But as you passed along these horrible records, in an hour’s time destined to be obliterated by the feet of thousands and thousands of wayfarers, you were not left unassailed by the clamorous petitions of the more urgent applicants for charity.
…it is not inconceivable that, for all his sorrowful thoughts, our botanist, with his trained observation, his habit of looking at little things upon the ground, would be the one to see and pick up the coin that has fallen from some wayfarer’s pocket.
Wayfarer is the modern form of the Middle English weyfarere. It’s been used in English since the 1400s.
SANDERS BILL IN THE SENATE THIS WEEK–This was a big deal in the US senate last week. Its a messy issue, as with most vets issues. S. 1982 is the known as the “Sanders bill” after its author Bernie Sanders (I-VT) This bill would have expanded Obamacare to the military amongst many other horrible things.
Johnson, along with every other republican voted against it. The republican alternative known as the”Burr Bill” after its author senator burr (R-NC). It was a long drawn out floor debate that lasted for a few days. The end result is what usually happens to our vets, nothing, which is sad.
We should not be upset with Johnson or any other single senator but rather with the whole senate and the childish way they behave. The vets bill is being sent back to committee for some fine tuning or complete overhaul.

THE SMOKE OUT MOVIE WILL BRING A TEAR TO OUR EYE—It all started several years ago when Commander Edge ordered the first Smoke Out Movie. His staff scrambled far and wide and produced the first Smoke Out movie. It sucked.
The next year came around and the Commander signed another memo dictating the problems with the last video and his austere goals for the next one. Once more the rug rats cut a dusty trail, filming as they followed his dictates to a tea. Again they failed.
This process continued for over a decade. Then in the corner of a dark southern saloon the Commander came upon two nervous Yankees from Santa Monica, shivering in the 100-degree summer heat with matching humidity. They were not cold, but afraid, their knees rattled as they looked up from the knife carved wooden table.
“This is the real shit,” Zack, from One World Studios said. “This isn’t Hollywood. We don’t know what to make of it.”
Edge slapped a contract in front of them immediately outlining every aspect of the Long Road and the Smoke Out. And finally the terrified yuppie Californians produced a Smoke Out movie to be proud of. Over the next couple of weeks we will give a couple of DVDs out to Bikernet Readers. Or, of course, you can buy your own version. Then send me a report

PAINTER PROFILE OF THE WEEK, TOM PREWITT—“I’m a third-generation body and paint man,” said Tom. “Back in 1942, my grandfather Gordon Prewitt and my great-uncle Roy Prewitt started a body shop. All the knowledge and skills gathered through the years were passed on to my dad, Tom Prewitt Sr. My dad moved the shop from its original location in Bell Gardens, Calif., to what is now Prewitt’s Quality Body & Paint in Klamath Falls, Ore. My brother, Dave Prewitt, currently runs that body shop. Cousin Rick Prewitt has his shop in Hemet Ca. specializing in collision and custom paint and body and framework to support his racing habit.”
“My introduction to custom body and paintwork came at a very young age. At 7 years old, I was already hanging around Big Daddy Roth’s Garage, which at the time was located on Slauson Ave. in the city of Maywood, Calif. Big Daddy Roth was a close friend with my dad, and on occasion we would take a trip to his shop for a visit with him. On one such trip, I can remember seeing one of his projects in action, the Hovercraft named “Rotar.” By age 9, I had already built my first bike well, minibike anyway. With help from longtime family friend Jim Lemon, I was able to build the frame, front and rear suspension.
My dad still has that bike. At age 16, I started building my ’65 Ford Ranchero lots of custom body and paint with help from my cousin Rick. After high school I decided to start my own body and paint business. I opened up shop in Brea, Ca. It took me only about five years to be recognized as one of the top award-winning custom painters on the show circuit. Fifty percent of custom painting is talent; the rest is heart and determination. Many of the techniques and secrets we use today were learned through trial and error. Any slow time we had we used as “experiment time,” trying out new ideas and techniques.
Tragedy struck in 1984: I had a motorcycle accident that caused me to take a year off. Time to close up shop a while. After I recovered from my injuries, I started working for a custom paint and body shop; I did metal finishing and lead work for six months. After a couple of years of working for other shops, I was ready to go on my own again.
Luckily, my friend Damon Richie was getting ready to retire and had his shop up for sale. I purchased the shop in 1989. Damon Richie has since passed on to a better place, but not before one last visit to say he was really proud of what we had accomplished. He too is still a big part of what we are today, as it was he who passed on a wealth of knowledge and responsibility to maintain the quality, creativity and honesty that is lacking in far too many of today’s businesses.

Had this bike for over a year, 3800 miles so far. I installed a different seat for the long trips but use the stock one for everything else.
Totally love and enjoy this bike. It’s like riding a jet engine with pegs although the baggers get me in the corners due to the floor boards, but my light weight and monster engine nails them everywhere else.
I love this bike!!

REPORT ON THE NEWEST BUELL–Got that old Cabin Fever bad! Snowed again today WTF!! Had to get out and do something rather than sit on my ass and do nothing. So, I went down to MCC in Villa Park, Il. www.TeamMCC.com
This is a really nice dealership that sells Ducati’s, Nortons, MV Agusta, Triumphs, KTM’s, and Husqvarna’s. Very friendly folks in the sales and parts departments.
I caught up with Greg Mellinger the owner and we started talking right away. Asked him if we could take a look at that new Buell 1190RX they finally got in last week.
I was all smiles when I walked up to it. It had the Strike Yellow paint body work on it. Erik Buell and the EBR racing crew did a really great job with this bike. The 1190RX carries on the Buell dream where the the Buell 1125R left off.
Spent some time talking with my buddy Les White who is the parts manager at MCC. I asked him what his thoughts were. He told me some stuff about the two cooling fans for heat management and other good info.
They haven’t had it out on the road yet, because of the crappy winter Chicago has had. There is still salt & snow all over the roads. The 1190RX is their demo Buell so when the roads clear up we’ll have more info for you. I need to have Les to take it out and fill me in on his thoughts. He is a road racer and he can give me a honest heads up.
Can’t wait for the weather to break, get back to MCC for a test ride on the 1190RX!!

IKON TO HELP WITH 5-BALL RACING TRIKE– Happy to think about any number of projects. Sounds like you are making a bit of a Bonneville Spyder.

The velocity responsiveness issue is always part of the suspension challenge. How well a suspension, a shock absorber in particular responds to high and low speed inputs and everything in between is always a hot topic. It is one reason why at the very high end of things shocks will have high and low speed adjustments (great on the race track but my opinion is of limited use for the average road rider). Important though it is the bigger challenges for road use lie in getting the right spring and damping combinations put together for the machine they have to work on and the rider or riders who will do the riding.
Here is my way of explaining something to the damping puzzle. Damping is made up of two forces, compression (some call it bump) and rebound. Compression is logically enough the hydraulic force generated when the shock compresses and rebound is the hydraulic force generated when the shock extends. Both of these forces make up the damping. Both are velocity sensitive being influenced by a system of valves and orifices.
While there is a reaction time issue between when a shock (damper to the purists) is generating one or the other force the shock is not the only component at work. There is flex in the tyre and twisting and squashing in rubber bushes for example that have an impact on any given response. In most shock systems (ie not reverse linkage) the main control force is the rebound. This is the force which has to control the release of the spring’s energy. This is related spring rate, deflection and so on.
If it is too low the system will bounce, if it is too high the system can bog down over a series of inputs leaving you with no effective suspension. Compression works with the spring, on the one hand it is tending to help resist in a small way the spring from compressing or loading up but on the other and more importantly it is there to smooth the movement and help keep the tyre in contact with the road surface.
Too much compression and the ride becomes harsh, too little and the wheel can hop off the road. Somewhat simplistically I have described the relationship between the shock and spring as one of being a team or friends when in compression when they work together soaking up a road input and enemies when in rebound as the shock fights to resist the spring just doing whatever it wants to. In between these extremes of compression and rebound damping will be a huge grey zone that can work.
Once a product is in the grey zone someone is going to like it and someone is not going to like it. Some like firmer controls than others. For many years the debate raged in automotive about the differences between the European approach to suspension control and the American approach (as time has moved on and vehicles have changed I think the European approach has all but won the day).
This is also in part an explanation of how and why there can be so many different brands and designs on the market. In motorcycling it is also in part an explanation of why no given OEM set up can please everyone. Not only are there different choices in spring and damper rates that can work in any one set up there are so many different people variables, height, weight, style, firm or soft preference etc.
For these sorts of reasons I am always reluctant to criticize an OEM set up too strongly, my belief is that an OEM set up can never and will never be right for all possibly not even a majority and that is not the OEM’s fault that is just people.

THE OFFICIAL TEXAS SHERIFF EXAM– A young Texan grew up wanting to be a lawman. He grew up big, 6′ 2″, strong as a longhorn, and fast as mustang. He could shoot a bottle cap tossed in the air at 40 paces. When he finally came of age, he applied to where he had only dreamed of working: the West Texas Sheriff’s Department.
After a series of tests and interviews, the Chief Deputy finally called him into his office for the young man’s last interview.
The Chief Deputy said, “You’re a big strong kid and you can really shoot. So far your qualifications all look good, but we have, what you might call, an “Attitude Suitability Test”, that you must take before you can be accepted. We just don’t let anyone carry our badge, son.”
Then, sliding a service pistol and a box of ammo across the desk, the Chief said, “Take this pistol and go out and shoot: six illegal aliens, six lawyers, six meth dealers, six Muslim extremists, six Democrats, and a rabbit.”
“Why the rabbit?” queried the applicant.
“You pass,” said the Chief Deputy. “When can you start?”

An LA Choppers bagger bars installation is coming to Bikernet Baggers. And Chica is back in town and I hope to write his feature next week. And Ray Wheeler promised his first Bonneville 5-Ball Raycer story of the year, and I’m working on number 3 with the help of Departure Bike Works on the Bonne Belle, and Kent Weeks of Lucky Devil in Houston on the Assalt Weapon II.
Hang on!
