EVEL KNIEVEL–The relationship between Evel Knievel and Harley-Davidson Motor Company began in the 1970s when the Company sponsored Knievel. Bill Davidson, vice president, core customer marketing, Harley-Davidson Motor Company, and great grandson of one of the Company’s founders, reflects on his memories and experiences with Evel.

“Evel Knievel was the most recognized motorcyclist in the world, performing extravagant stunts in front of people from around the globe,” said Davidson. “In a way, Evel was a lot like our brand: powerful, unique, recognized around the world, and he demonstrated Americana.”

“Evel was an extreme person with a big heart,” said Davidson. “I remember when I was a little boy, I asked him to help sponsor me in a bicycle ride for the Diabetic Association. He sent a letter and a check back for $1,000! I know he supported a lot of organizations throughout his years, but kids always held a special place in his heart.”

“The last time I saw Evel was in Daytona in March when we had asked him to sign autographs for an hour. Even though he was ill, he stayed for three or fours hours signing autographs. Evel was not only an amazing stuntman, but a man with an amazing soul.”

king kong 1

KING KONG KLUTCH FROM BAKER–Hi everybody in American Big Twin media-land. This is a blast email press release from Scout the Brand Vandal at BAKER Drivetrain. For many, I’m re-introducing our King Kong Klutch. I have a spanking-new media list, so if you hadn’t got any official word on the KKK back in January, here is my official intro.

Why am I re-introducing this clutch? Well, it was designed to be the end all for big-inch, high-power, massive output from mega-motors. That was our focus and it’s doing just fine with that target. But, we’re finding that touring folks LOVE the super-light clutch effort. Yes, this KKK will fit most stock baggers our there and it subsides clutch effort without heavy springs. The secret is in the design.

The new focus on the KKK, without being cross-eyed, will also be the demographic who complains about difficulty clutching the most. A lot of the types are in the bagger market. Forgive me for not being PC if I’m not, but this clutch is great for older riders, arthritic riders, and women with smaller hands, and so on, The KKK will be the BFF of these riders, especially in stop/go traffic at rallies!

IT’S CHRISTMAS DAY ALL IS SECURE

IT WAS THE NIGHT BEFORE CHRISTMASHE LIVED ALL ALONE
IN A ONE BEDROOM HOUSE MADE OF PLASTER AND STONE
I HAD COME DOWN THE CHIMNEY WITH PRESENTS TO GIVE
AND TO SEE JUST WHO IN THIS HOME DID LIVE

I LOOKED ALL ABOUT A STRANGE SIGHT I DID SEE
NO TINSEL NO PRESENTS JUST A PHOTO OF HIS HARLEY
NO STOCKING BY THE MANTLE JUST BOOTS FILLED WITH SAND
ON THE WALL HUNG PICTURES OF FAR DISTANT LANDS
WITH MEDALS AND BADGES AWARDS OF ALL KINDS
A SOBER THOUGHT CAME THROUGH MY MIND

FOR THIS HOUSE WAS DIFFERENT IT WAS DARK AND DREARY
I FOUND THE HOME OF A SOLDIER ONCE I COULD SEE CLEARLY
THE SOLDIER LAY SLEEPING SILENT ALONE
CURLED UP ON THE FLOOR IN THIS ONE BEDROOM HOME

THE FACE WAS SO GENTLE THE ROOM IN SUCH DISORDER
NOT HOW I PICTURED A LONE ALLIED SOLDIER
WAS THIS THE HERO OF WHOM I’D JUST READ
CURLED UP ON A PONCHO THE FLOOR FOR A BED

I REALISED THE FAMILIES THAT I SAW THIS NIGHT
OWED THEIR LIVES TO THESE SOLDIERS WHO WERE WILLING TO FIGHT
SOON ROUND THE WORLD THE CHILDREN WOULD PLAY
AND GROWN-UPS WOULD CELEBRATE A BRIGHT CHRISTMAS DAY

THEY ALL ENJOY FREEDOM EACH MONTH OF THE YEAR
BECAUSE OF THE SOLDIERS LIKE THE ONE LYING HERE
I COULDN’T HELP WONDER HOW MANY ALONE
ON A COLD CHRISTMAS EVE IN A LAND FAR FROM HOME

THE VERY THOUGHT BROUGHT A TEAR TO MY EYE
I DROPPED TO MY KNEES AND STARTED TO CRY
THE SOLDIER AWAKENED AND I HEARD A ROUGH VOICE
‘SANTA DON’T CRY THIS LIFE IS MY CHOICE
I FIGHT FOR FREEDOM
I DON’T ASK FOR MORE
MY LIFE IS MY GOD, MY COUNTRY, MY CORPS’

THE SOLDIER ROLLED OVER AND DRIFTED TO SLEEP
I COULDN’T CONTROL IT I CONTINUED TO WEEP

I KEPT WATCH FOR HOURS SO SILENT AND STILL
AND WE BOTH SAT AND SHIVERED FROM THE COLD NIGHT’S CHILL
I DIDN’T WANT TO LEAVE ON THAT COLD DARK NIGHT
THIS GUARDIAN OF HONOUR SO WILLING TO FIGHT

THEN THE SOLDIER ROLLED OVER WITH A VOICE SOFT AND PURE
WHISPERED ‘CARRY ON SANTA IT’S CHRISTMAS DAY ALL IS SECURE’
ONE LOOK AT MY WATCH AND I KNEW HE WAS RIGHT
‘MERRY CHRISTMAS MY FRIEND AND TO ALL A GOOD NIGHT’

STEED MOTORCYCLES DIDN’T DIE–Due to the overwhelming number of requests, I’ve re-opened this website to you, the Steed Enthusiast, as a source for current updates and historical reference material. The Official Steed Online Store is now open once again and stocked with Steed Brand Clothing and merchandise.

I’d like to personally thank each and every one of the Steed Motorcycle owners for their encouragement and continued support during one of the most challenging chapters in my 19 year history in the American motorcycle industry.

In July of 2005 I “sold” the assets of the motorcycle manufacturing company I founded in 1989, along with motorcycle designs and processes to Patriot Motorcycle Corporation. I also licensed my brands, Steed and Steed Musclebike to Patriot while I was employed to oversee the Design and Development of street motorcycles for the company.

My short alliance with Patriot Motorcycle Corporation ended in October 2006 when I declined an offer from Patriot to “buy back” the motorcycle division they decimated in less than a year.

Sadly, directly due to my association with Patriot, 2006 was the last year of production of Steed Brand motorcycles. Currently I am pursuing all the legal remedies available. Patriot Motorcycle Corporation, CEO Michelle Attias, President, Dick Simon and CFO David Gernak are currently now known collectively and individually with their spouses as “Defendants” in US District Court. Even though the wheels of justice move at a very low RPM I have faith that justice will prevail, given time.

My passion and commitment to the American Motorcycle industry continues. I will personally respond to all inquiries regarding Branding, Licensing, Product Design, Consulting, Marketing and Photography at my latest venture JC Studios LLC.

I truly appreciate your continued support of the Steed Brand.

SUPPORT THE CALIFORNIA HELMET LITIGATION– There is important constitutional helmet law litigation, originally brought by Richard Quigley that requires your support for it to succeed. It is set for trial in May 2008 in the same California courthouse where Quigley obtained the judicial opinion that the California helmet law was unconstitutionally vague as applied. The present litigation, if successful, will build on that victory now to defeat the California helmet law on the same constitutional due process grounds. We anticipate, furthermore, that the appellate decision resulting from the case will also assist freedom fighters across the nation to defeat their helmet laws.

The purpose of this correspondence is to request your help to properly fund the trial. We urge you to pass the hat, dig deep, and send your checks to: “Judicial Fund” c/o Abate of California, 10240 Seventh Avenue, Hesperia, CA 92345.

True to the tradition of the small but great state of Delaware, the first state to ratify the United States Constitution, the three Delaware ABATE Chapters have announced that they will be the first to stand to defend the constitution, specifically by doing their part to assure that this important constitutional litigation prevails. These three small Delaware ABATE Chapters have made an $8,000 contribution to this Judicial Fund set up as the war chest for the Quigley litigation. The contribution represents $8.00 from each Delaware ABATE member. In announcing the donation, Delaware ABATE State Legislative Coordinator, Gary K. (Hildy) Hilderbrand stated:

“We are releasing this announcement as a challenge to all SMROs in every state in the nation to match what our little State has done. ABATE of Delaware is proud to represent the State that started this nation, and first on board with the desperately needed funds to maintain our freedom.”

We are writing to urge all SMROs across this nation to come together, and follow Delaware’s lead, to assure that this important constitutional litigation prevails. We also want you to know that the success we achieve will not just free California bikers from the shackles of our oppressive helmet law; it will set the precedent that we hope will assure that every other state can obtain or preserve freedom.

The legislative helmet wars have entered an entirely new battlefield on which SMROs now face not only the insurance industry and medical lobbyists but the federal government now wearing the face of the National Transportation Safety Board. The September 2007 NTSB recommendations and the reinvigorated helmet law proponent activity nationwide should cause rights advocates in every state to consider whether it will be realistic to expect with any certainty that freedom can be achieved against these even greater powers lining up against us, and indeed, whether the SMROs in the free and semi-free states we will be able to hold on to their freedom.

The NTSB has made a specific recommendation to every state, and that is to adopt or amend the state helmet laws to require that ALL riders wear helmets conforming to the federal motorcycle helmet performance standard set forth in FMVSS 218. This already has happened in Nebraska and North Carolina.

The importance of the Quigley California litigation is in part derived from the fact that the California helmet law is precisely the law that the NTSB has recommended. It is a law requiring all California motorcyclists and their passengers to wear helmets compliant with FMVSS 218.

The present litigation is the culmination of 17 years of concerted work by Richard Quigley and California freedom fighters like Steve Bianco, the truck driver responsible for the constitutional appellate law which has set the CHP up for this fall. Steve Bianco is also one of the four remaining plaintiffs in the Quigley litigation who will carry this litigation forward now following Quig’s passing.

If successful, our victory will hammer the final constitutional nail into the coffin of the California helmet law. It is 17 years of work which we also hope may be able to shortcut the road to freedom for those who will fight for it in the courts of our sister states. Indeed, it is our greatest hope that our victory will serve as important constitutional precedent for freedom fighters to obtain the same result in every state in which a helmet law presently requires use of FMVSS 218 compliant helmets, and every other state in which such a law is subsequently enacted pursuant to the NTSB’s recommendations.

Thank you for your consideration in the above regard.

In freedom and brotherhood,

LETTERS TO TROOPS RETURNED OR DESTROYED–Hundreds of thousands of holiday cards and letters thanking American troops for their sacrifice and wishing them well never reach their destination. They are returned to sender or thrown away unopened.

Since the Sept. 11 attacks and the anthrax scare, the Pentagon and the Postal Service have refused to deliver mail addressed simply to “Any Wounded Soldier” for fear terrorists or opponents of the war might send toxic substances or demoralizing messages.

Mail must be addressed to a specific member of the armed forces – a rule that pains many well-meaning Americans this Holiday season.

Last season, despite the rule, officials say as many as 450,000 pieces of mail not addressed to anyone in particular managed to reach Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Washington. But they were returned or, if they had no return address, were thrown out altogether, because the hospital lacked the manpower to open and screen all the unsolicited mail.

USO spokesman John Hanson said that like the military, the nonprofit service organization does not deliver unopened mail to unspecified recipients. He said the USO worries about security as well as hateful messages from war critics.

The USO is one of the organizations the military is encouraging people to support with donations as an alternative to sending cards to unspecified soldiers. The military is also referring people to the American Red Cross and a Defense Department Web site where supporters have posted thousands of messages to troops.

INDIAN LARRY LEGACY SPLITS–In September 2004, four friends and partners of Indian Larry got together to form an organization with one goal in mind, keeping Indian Larry’s memory alive. This collaboration, known as Indian Larry Legacy, has continuously grown to produce outstanding motorcycles, custom parts, and an expanding line of cutting edge apparel.

2008 will bring about some changes to the organization in that the Legacy partners, Bobby Seeger, Elisa Seeger, Paul Cox, and Keino Sasaki, will all be branching out to follow various independent pursuits in the motorcycle industry.

Bobby Seeger and Elisa Seeger, major players in the bike shop and the driving force behind the creative and diverse line of Indian Larry merchandise, will continue to offer the public an opportunity to own something special. The time they have spent as Larry’s friends and partners has led them to produce a quality group of accessories. These items continue to be offered at various shops across the country as well as on indianlarry.com. They will also focus on Grease Monkey Mayhem and event started in Sturgis 2006, which has brought together the most talented builders and artists to showcase their work.

Keino Sasaki, eager young builder from Japan, is launching his own shop in Brooklyn, NY named Keino Cycles. Having been greatly inspired by Larry’s philosophy, Keino’s sites are aimed towards advances in motor configuration, frame work and sheet metal and a look that is unique and stylish.

Paul Cox, long established as a leather craftsman and fabricator, will be expanding his independent company Paul Cox Industries. The primary focus will continue to be handmade motorcycles, along with custom parts and leather work. He will remain in Brooklyn and continue to build in the mechanical style shared with him by Indian Larry.
