This is how you can finish a seat using one of my PANS FOR LIFE pans (PFL) First Thing is to cut the center out to fit the inner edge of a PFL pan.
Tracing:Next step is to lay the leather on the PFL and tape it in place. Next step is to trace the outter edge of the PFL With a ball point pen.
Cutting:
Once this is done cut right one the pen line . This is important. because you will use this edge as a guide for a cut you will do latter.
Check the fit:
Next step is to check the fit on the PFL It helps to tape it in place.
Marking the holes:
While you are checking the fit of the leather to the outter edge of the PFL It is a good time to mark the leather for the holes.
Holes Punched:
Now that the holes are punched. It is a good time to check and make sure the screw fit through easily.
Scribe:
I use a Digital Calipers to measure the width of the cut I want to do to expose the PFL. I generally use .188 or about 3/16-inch.
Final cutting:
Now that you have the leather scribed. It is time to cut it. This will be the edge of your leather, so it’s important to make a good cut.
Check the fit:
Now that you have made the final cut it is important to check the fit once again. And make any adjustments needed. For this fit check I screw it to the PFL
Edging:
Now that the leather has been cut to fit and the holes have been punched. It is time to edge the leather. I use a edge beveler for this and a exacto.
Now the leather is ready for dying .
Dying and Sealing:
Once I have dyed the leather ring. I generally seal the under side. This will keep the leather from getting water damaged.
It is also a good time to edge the sides of the ring and seal it. The bottom is all done at this point.
Foaming:
It is time to glue down the foam. I use glue sparingly here. You do not need a lot.
Edging & Finishing:
Here are the final steps preparing the leather. First I edge the leather, then I use a slicker on the edges. This makes the edges of the leather nice and smooth, no fuzz. Then I seal the whole piece. This makes it water resistant. and give it a nice semi gloss finish.
Attaching the leather to the PFL :
I generally start all the screws. Then adjust them as necessary. Then I will remove one screw at a time, to use blue locktite on them. Be very carefull, not to get any on the leather. Once all the screws have been replaced, then you can start tightening them down. Until they bottom out.
Stainless:
Now it is ready to attach the stainless. But first you have to let the finish dry completely.
I use a special mixture of glues I have tested for flexibility and adhesion. I scuff the backside of the stainless, and apply some glue (Just enough glue). If you get any on the outside of the letters it will not come off easily, or at all. Once the leathers are in place let them sit till they are fully cured and you are done.
