Hey,
I try to search for inside scoop material for the Sunday Post and Cantina Members. Sometimes that’s a daunting task, but today, we have a couple of exclusives, and inside notions. Ray Wheeler, Dr. Willie, and I are scrambling to complete the repairs to the Salt Shaker and pull it off the lift. Then Ray and I will shift to my son’s Mudflap Girl FXR bike, shift the rear fender and get to the point of wiring Frank’s bike. I would like it off the lift before the end of the year.
Here’s my point, and I’ve been pounding this home to my grandkids. Each year is an opportunity to accomplish a great deal. In this case, as much as Sin Wu hammers me about slowing down, 2012 is going to be nuts with wonderful projects. We plan to ride the two slow-progress FXR builds to Sturgis this year (the original plan called for riding them to Sturgis last year–best laid plans), then we’re headed to Bonneville with two ground-up racers. I have two book projects looming that I will share with you, we are working with the official Bikernet Attorney Robin Scroogie on the Bikernet/Cycle Source Sturgis Lot, plus we are making major changes to the Bikernet Headquarters next year. Talk about Never a Dull Moment. Don’t forget the first Bikernet/Cycle Source Sweeps bike that’s coming next year, built by Gary Mauer of Kustoms Inc.
Hold on for this news including a report from Jay Allen about Billy Lane. He’s going to be able to build a bike in Prison. Let’s hit the news, and throughout this year you will follow every Bikernet move right here.
Regarding Jesse and the Teutuls, I just judged the IMS show in Long Beach. Every contender in the Freestyle Class would have beat Jesse. I hope all the pissed off viewers write the Discovery Channel and encouraged them to create a true American Chopper (owned by the Teutuls) competition. Maybe we should change that to World Chopper, or Pure Chopper competition. Let’s see if they step up.

We confirmed this bike to be the original Harley-Davidson and the Marlboro movie bike. I sent these images to Gene Thomasen, the builder, at Bartel’s H-D, and he gave it a thumbs up. “Well, it’s 99%…checked,” said Gene. “If they have the paperwork from MGM, that would cement the deal. TWO-Time LAND SPEED RECORD HOLDER– Valerie Thompson Receives 2011 American Woman Riders Community Hero Award
(Scottsdale, AZ) – December 9, 2011– Motorcycle racer and team owner Valerie Thompson has been named the co-recipient of the 2011 American Woman Riders Community Hero Award by the American Woman Riders Association. Thompson’s racing accomplishments and community support of the HopeKids children’s charity were key criteria for award selection.
The American Woman Riders Community Hero Award was initiated in 2010 to provide recognition of women motorcycle riders who donate time to charities and give selflessly to their community without expecting something in return. “Valerie’s many years of supporting the HopeKids organization was a key consideration in selecting her for this year’s recognition. She has taken children to drag races, attended movie days, and participated in many fundraising events for the organization. Her motorcycle racing accomplishments in drag racing and land speed record attempts make her an excellent role model for thousands of women riders across the country. Valerie’s positive, caring attitude display what a true American Woman Rider strives to be,” according to Tina Reeves, President of the American Woman Riders Association.
“This award is a real honor. My parents taught me the importance of “giving back” to the community and helping those less fortunate. I love working with kids, which has been extremely rewarding for me personally. HopeKids does excellent work and it has been a wonderful experience to help support their efforts,” said Thompson.
Tammy Wiley from Harker Heights Texas was the co-recipient of this year’s community hero award, recognizing her work with the “We Fight Like A Girl” ovarian cancer foundation.
Valerie Thompson Background
Thompson currently holds two land speed records at the famed Bonneville Salt Flats. This year Thompson ran a “personal best” top speed of 201.01 mph at the 8th Annual BUB Speed Trials, outperforming all other BMW’s at the event. Thompson also serves as a motorcycle presenter for the world’s largest auto auction company, Barrett-Jackson. Thompson’s current goals include setting additional land speed records and becoming a member of the “200 MPH Club.” Current sponsors include: CTEK battery chargers, TROON Enterprises, Swisstrax, Hawthorne CAT of San Diego, Stand Up Photos, and Alter/Bivins Racing.

BILLY LANE TO BUILD A BIKE IN PRISON FOR THE 25TH ANNIVERSARY OF ROLLING THUNDER SUPPORTED BY JAY ALLEN AND THE BROKEN SPOKE–It’s true, and supported by the Warden of Billy’s prison. Four bikes will be built, one for each military service. Jay has the Army bike, Billy the Air Force Bike, and the other two are secret at this time.
Jay is organizing this effort for the the 25th anniversary of the veterans supported annual Rolling Thunder event.
ULTIMATE BUILDER SHOW CONTESTANTS–Long Beach, California: This weekend at the IMS show I judged the selection of bikes in the show. At one point I turned to Prince Najar and said, “Each one of these bikes would have beat Jesse’s bike in the Build Off.
Chris Richardson won the Freestyle Catagory.
THE JUDGE VS. HARLEY-DAVIDSON–Judge prevents Harley-Davidson from enforcing foreign, online sales restrictions. St. Paul Harley Davidson has won an important ruling in its recent lawsuit against Harley-Davidson: A federal judge on Monday ordered the Motor Co. not to enforce its upcoming ban on sales of PG&A through third-party websites or to international customers.
The judge’s order is effective through Feb. 29, according to The Business Journal. Citing court records, the paper reported that attorneys for both parties are negotiating a resolution. The judge therefore has put the case on hold through January.
According to earlier reports, St. Paul Harley-Davidson owner Tom Giannetti alleges that the new restrictions, effective Jan. 1, would cost the dealership about $8 million per year, or about a quarter of the Minnesota dealership’s total revenue.

HARD TIMES FOR BIG BEAR CHOPPERS–Future of Big Bear Choppers in doubt. Big Bear Choppers has fallen on hard times and may be closing its doors forever, according to published reports.
A sign on the door at the Big Bear Lake, Calif., facility says closed for the Thanksgiving holiday, reopening Nov. 28. The business did not reopen Nov. 28, according to the Big Bear Grizzly.
The company’s troubles started in 2009, when a man who lost his leg in an accident filed a product liability suit against BBC, claiming faulty welds on his bike. New cases were being filed as late as Nov. 10 of this year.
Other customers have since complained to the newspaper and authorities that they made deposits or paid for motorcycles up front, but never received them.
Calls from Dealernews were not answered.
Owners Kevin and Mona Alsop, appearing on the mentoring TV show “Bloomberg The Mentor” earlier this month, admitted they were down to producing six bikes a month but needed to sell 10 to keep the business above water. Kevin Alsop said at the time that he has neither the resources nor the staff to produce 10 a month.
It was also revealed on the TV show that Big Bear Choppers has numerous orders for custom motorcycles, which the customers have either paid for in full or paid a deposit, that haven’t been filled.
In May, the city of Big Bear Lake’s Improvement Agency approved a $100,000 direct loan to the boutique OEM through its small business investment program. According to the city’s website, the loan program is administered by the Small Business Administration. The money must be paid back within 20 years and the interest rate is 3.5 percent.
Big Bear Choppers also received help in April from the San Bernardino Workforce Investment Board. The Layoff Aversion Program received funds from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act to provide support to small businesses to retain employees.
On the Bloomberg show, Kevin stated that he and Mona searched for help but none was offered. “We screamed out for help,” Kevin stated. He said without business knowledge, he had hired people and overpaid them to help build his business.

BIKERNET 5-BALL RACING WHEELER WEPORT–Life is nuts in the life of Bikernet these days and that’s a good thing. The weather this weekend, has been perfect with blazing sunshine to be followed by more blue skies and more sunshine. After last years IMS show we rode home in the dark and the rain Sunday evening, perfect!
Don’t forget to use your membership discounts? See a sponsor you could use a discount from? We’ll give it a shot, just call.
After a quick trip from headquarters to the IMS show Saturday afternoon, we discovered the IMS event was packed with a ton of ride able motorcycles on display inside and the parking lot was packed.
After entering the show the red carpet center aisles stretched out for what seemed miles and were lined with custom hot rods that represented builders with a ton of class and 99% of the bikes were ride-able.
World Record Setting Salt Shaker
We’re headed down the home stretch. Dr. Willie, hailing out of Long Beach, Ca. packed all of the proper tools for the job at hand on his ever faithful 130,000 mile Dyna. Runs like a top.
Short List that was accomplished.
The crew at Branch O’Keefe double checked the heads while they were off and touched the valve seats up to like new condition for a perfect seal.
The fresh heads were installed and torqued to specs.
The pinion shaft gear was re-keyed and torqued to the proper specs. The gears were re-installed after the clearances we’re checked and the cam cover was bolted into place. The good Doctor adjusted the push rods to perfection.
A reverse distributor shaft, drive gear from S&S arrived in the nick of time. Willie removed the old gear and a fresh, correct-rotation gear was installed and pinned to the shaft.
A Branch O’Keefe polished intake manifold with a Mukini carb was installed.
Code of the West
Exhaust bolts have been known to disappear at an amazing rate, forever, on the freeway, in the middle of nowhere, in the dark, with long flames licking your legs, at the most in opportune time ( that would be any fukin time), if they are nor properly installed.
To do
Tap bolt holes (2) on heads where the top motor mount is captured. Install top mount, with choke.
Install throttle cables. Check the motor and transmission fluid levels. Add a happy rider and haul ass.
Enjoy your families and the Holidays.
Haul Ass!

TITAN IS ALIVE–Titan Motorcycle Co. will unveil its new 2012 models at its annual Kickstart dealer and distributor conference Dec. 9-15 at its facility in Phoenix.
The company said it expects more than 30 of the world’s largest dealerships and distributors to attend.
The company said it is running its business based on the Inventory on Demand methodology. Much like the “Just in Time” manufacturing method of the 1980s, Inventory on Demand requires Titan to be able to build as many units as needed but never straddle itself with un-needed stock.
Dealers order new models based on market response and work directly with the manufacturer on promoting new sales, and developing new aftersales and service programs.
The company said it has revamped and streamlined its build structure to bring per-unit cost down, and management claims those savings will be passed on to dealers and distributors. The new line reportedly has reduced MSRP upwards of 30 percent.
All components are still built in North America and final assembly is done at the company’s plant in Phoenix, the company stated.
The company added that it expects to be at market peak numbers by mid- to late 2012, and has advised most of its client base to solidify as many dealer/distributor licenses and unit-built purchase orders as possible this month so they can be held in priority sequence at the start of 2012.

KEITH BALL FACE BOOK ATTACKS– I read all the comments on FB about the buildoff. CHEESH some of those folks must have a lot of time on their hands. You have been around too long to give credence to much of it.
Just wanted to touch base, it has been a long time. Are you going to have a Salt bike this year? Pretty much wasn’t the same without you guys this year.

MORE CAMERA COMPANY SNAKE OIL– Redflex Traffic Systems just announced its latest innovation in the name of traffic safety: a red-light camera system that reportedly senses when an approaching vehicle is about to run a red light and responds by trying to stop traffic on the fly with a one to two second all-red delay.
Wow! A camera that predicts the future and reads minds all at the same time! What will they think of next?
Supporters claim the new technology, dubbed a “halo system,” will improve safety. In a story from the Arizona Republic, Chandler, Arizona Police Lieutenant Richard Speer stated his department’s eagerness to test the new system. “If it is what it appears to be, it is going to save lives,” he said.
That’s a big IF. Given the camera companies’ record over the last few years – technical failures, short yellow light schemes, ticketing mistakes, increased accident rates – cities should be skeptical of claims of enhanced safety. And motorists should be as well.
Such a system could create a false sense of security, causing motorists to drop their guard at intersections and lead to even more accidents.
It’s worth noting that the vast majority of red-light camera tickets are issued for vehicles entering the intersection within the first half-second of the red light, when the accident risk is very low.
For example, a 2009 analysis of red-light camera data from Clarksville, Tennessee found that most infractions occurred in the first 0.3 seconds of the red light. Only 6.5 percent happened after the light had been red for two seconds or longer.

RAT FINK FROM DREW–
NOISE SNARE–Here’s something I hope doesn’t make its way down from the Great White North. The Noise Snare is basically a decibel meter attached to a camera, so it works like a speed camera, but for noise. Ride past it with pipes that are too loud, and you get a $200 ticket in the mail.
Mark Nesdoly invented this latest surveillance nanny after a motorcycle woke up his daughter, which surely endears it to the legions of meddling whiners who eat pizza with a knife and fork and exist to complain. Personally, I’m sick to death of parents who feel the entire world should be a soft cocoon tuned to coddle their offspring. I don’t know… If I have to listen to your little brat bray in a restaurant or scream on a cross-country flight, maybe these folks could suck it up once in a while.
Initial testing has just been completed up in Calgary, and if all goes according to plan, Noise Snares could be up and running by summer. Oh Canada indeed.

BIKERNET GROCERY STORE MEMO–What’s in the box?
A little old lady went to the grocery store to buy cat food.
She picked up four cans and took them to the check-out
counter.
The girl at the cash register said, “I’m sorry, but we cannot sell you cat food without proof that you have a cat. A lot of old people buy cat food to eat, and the management wants proof that you are buying the cat food for your cat.”
The little old lady went home, picked up her cat and brought it back to the store. They sold her the cat food. The next day, she tried to buy two cans of dog food.
Again the cashier said “I’m sorry, but we cannot sell you dog food without proof that
you have a dog. A lot of old people buy dog food to eat, but the management wants proof that you are buying the dog food for your dog.”
The little old lady went home, picked up her dog and brought it back to the store. She was able to buy the dog food.
The next day she brought in a box with a hole in the lid. The little old lady asked the cashier to stick her finger in the hole. The cashier said, “No, you might have a snake in there.”
The little old lady assured her that there was nothing in the box that would harm her. So the cashier put her finger into the box and pulled it out.
She said to the little old lady, “That
smells like shit.”
The little old lady said, “It is. I want to buy three rolls of toilet paper.”
So……….. Don’t mess with old people.

THE 2011 BUB Motorcycle Speed Trials yearbook is finished– 140 pages and 336 images from the event. I have already made many of the personalized covers that I remember from last year but if you haven’t picked your image go to my website www.scootershoots.com and pick out your image, then drop me a note with the image number and I will get you fixed up. You can still get them in time for the holidays but time is running out.
When you follow the link below you can preview the entire book right on line by clicking on any of the covers. The interior of the book is always the same but cover will have the image of your choosing.
I have committed the entire series of BUB books to the new Bonneville Salt Flats Museum when it is finished. As the book is the only record of it’s kind in land speed racing I hope it represents us well in the new museum.
It is my intention to bring a book to the 2012 event and get as many people as I can to sign it for donation to the museum.
I love putting this book together and as always I apologize in advance to those riders I missed. Shooting two tracks that run simultaneously makes it difficult and I always miss a few.
If you have any questions please drop me a note and I will see that you get what you need. Here is you link: http://www.blurb.com/my/store

STURGIS HALL OF FAME NOMINATIONS–
I’m writing to you today to ask you to help me get the word out about nominations for the Freedom Fighters Hall of Fame. As you’re well aware,
the Sturgis Motorcycle Museum & Hall of Fame has the only Freedom Fighters Hall of Fame recognizing the great people who work tirelessly for motorcyclists rights throughout the country and the world.
Many of these wonderful fighters are not in the spotlight, and often even AVOID the
spotlight – making it extremely difficult for those who are not in the trenches with them to identify their accomplishments. That’s where you come
in.
The Sturgis Motorcycle Museum & Hall of Fame relies on nominations to make its decision about who is deserving of the honor of being inducted into the Freedom Fighters Hall of Fame. I’m asking you each to help us by spreading
the word to the people you know who work for motorcyclists rights every day
– that nominations are being accepted. Please pass the word to anyone you
think might submit a nomination (and you are certainly welcome to submit
nominations as well).
The deadline to submit nominations for consideration for 2012 is January 13th, 2012.
You can find the nomination form for the Freedom Fighters Hall of Fame here:

I LIKE SOUTH CAROLINA GOVERNOR Nikki Haley–One of the prefiled bills in the South Carolina Senate would require all motorcyclists in South Carolina to wear helmets. Now, only riders under 21 years old have to wear them.
The bill is sponsored by Sen. Ralph Anderson, D-Greenville.
According to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, 20 states require all riders to wear helmets. 27 other states, including South Carolina, require them for only some riders.
The IIHS says Kentucky repealed its universal helmet law in 1998, followed by Louisiana in 1999.
The motorcycle riders group ABATE, which stands for A Brotherhood Against Totalitarian Enactments, will fight the bill. ABATE assistant state coordinator Dean Collins says, “We don’t have a problem at all with the device itself, but our biggest problem is taking more of our freedoms away from us and giving you the right to choose on your own there. It’s just more government interference.”
While the IIHS statistics indicate that helmets save lives, ABATE says other statistics can show that they don’t. It says the death-per-accident rate in Maryland actually went up after it enacted a mandatory helmet law. Collins says it could be because the majority of motorcycle deaths are caused by body trauma, not head trauma.
There’s also the cost debate. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration says numerous studies show just over half of all motorcycle crash victims have private health insurance coverage, which means taxpayers pick up the tab for the rest. But Collins says that’s also true for car accident victims who don’t have insurance.
The bill faces a tough fight in the legislature. It’s been assigned to the Senate Transportation Committee, chaired by Berkeley County Sen. Larry Grooms, who’s against mandatory helmet laws.
And even if the bill were to pass the House and Senate, it faces a veto by Gov. Nikki Haley. She says, “We encourage everyone to wear a helmet and be safe, but we will always support protecting the liberties of our citizens and have never supported a mandatory helmet law.”

THE OTHER CHURCH, DOWN THE BLOCK–
A bar called Drummond’s (in Mt Vernon, Texas) began construction on an expansion of their building, hoping to “grow” their business. In response, the local Southern Baptist Church started a campaign to block the bar from expanding – petitions, prayers, etc.
About a week before the bar’s grand re-opening, a bolt of lightning struck the bar and burned it to the ground! Afterward, the church folks were rather smug – bragging about “the power of prayer”. The angry bar owner eventually sued the church on grounds that the church … “was ultimately responsible for the demise of his building, through direct actions or indirect means.” Of course, the church vehemently denied all responsibility or any connection to the building’s demise. The judge read carefully through the plaintiff’s complaint and the defendant’s reply. He then opened the hearing by saying:
“I don’t know how I’m going to decide this, but it appears from the paperwork that what we have here is a bar owner who now believes in the power of prayer, and an entire church congregation that does not.”

WOULD YOU LIKE TO OWN A DRAG RACE–
Not sure if you’d be interested but I’ve been talking w Sandra Alberti of WMDRA (Western Motorcycle Drag Racing Assoc), she’s looking for a sponsor to help her put on an event in Woodburn, OR, probably mid summer. I’m sure you could have the event for $5,000 which is a track rental. If you could partner with one of your advertisers, it could be a win win.

TATTOO FEATURE COMING TO BIKERNET– Well there is a lot info about Professor Charlie Wagner on the Web. I’m not going to do a big history lesson here.
My dribble really is about how I learned the story of Professor Charlie Wagner. I worked with a friend of mine from New York who was my service
writer at the a H-D dealership in North Carolina.
Keith Wagner aka “Jumbo” is his name. We would bullshit all the time about bikes and the good old days. Well after talking about tattoo’s, etc. one day.
He begins to tell me about his grandfather Stephan Wagner. How he worked in the old Ringling circus. Did a highwire act and worked the “Slack Rope”.
Also he tells me that his grandfather’s brother was the famous tattooist Professor Charlie Wagner who did all his tattoo’s. How cool is that?
