FINDING THE RIGHT PATH WEEKLY NEWS for August 27th, 2015

Hey,

Another strange day in Paradise. I receive negative industry reports once in a while, from bullshit to legitimate complaints, most of which I don’t post. If I feel it’s straight-forward I share it with the company or shop, so they have the opportunity to correct the error.

There’s a major reason I don’t blab these all over Bikernet. Our industry is small and in most cases struggling to survive. We live in a world of Wal-Marts and cheap products from overseas. We live in a world of constantly expanding regulation. We are lucky custom is still allowed. We need to support the small American manufacturer and custom shop, forever.

On the other hand, the big corporate giants taking advantage of underpaid citizens and talents need to take another look at what they are doing and try to return American quality to their business model.

The magazine industry was slated to fail with the advent of the Internet, but they did fine, grew in some cases, and some magazines today are giants. Then greedy distributors started to attack the industry and take all the newsstand profits. Magazines immediately cut staffs and the talents delivering the content.

I see writers, editors, and photographers on the streets constantly trying to make a living. Life isn’t fair, dammit.

Let’s hit the news quick, before I say the wrong thing. We here at Bikernet try to work with all the mags in our industry and the talents. We do our part to keep them afloat and in the Wind.

The Bikernet Weekly News is Sponsored in Part by Cycle Source Magazine, Iron Trader, and the Motorcycle Riders Foundation.

DEI adds Turbo Shields to ONYX Series Kit provides for easy install for most powersport applications– Turbo systems are the easiest and most cost effective way to bolt-on horsepower. For maximum performance potential, turbo shields are used to cover the housing to help maintain a more consistent temperature in the turbo; increasing air-flow efficiency and decreasing turbo lag. For powersports, the shield also doubles as a protective barrier to heat generated from the turbo-potentially protecting the rider from a leg or boot burn.

Building on the popularity of DEI’s award winning ONYX Series™ Flexible Heat Shield, DEI Powersports now offers the ONYX Series™ Turbo Shield, now available for Garrett® GT22 and GT25 turbo sizes. In addition to Garrett brand turbo housings, the ONYX Series™ Turbo Shields also fit several other popular turbo brands including Mitsubishi and others.

DEI’s new ONYX Series Turbo Shield Kit also includes a 2” x 25’ roll of premium DEI exhaust wrap and eight stainless steel locking ties, sufficient to cover most powersport applications.

Part Number: 902500 GT22 Turbo Shield, 902501 GT25 Turbo Shield

Fitment: GT22, GT25 and similar sized turbo housings

SPEEDKING IN THE HORSE— I’m writing the feature for the HORSE and I need to meet the deadline tomorrow. This is a helluva cool Company Truck as Jeff calls it. Watch for the next issue of HORSE, or on Bikernet in the near future.

BIKERNET ADVERTISING–
Advertising is simple and complex on Bikernet. We can track all your ads and tell you the number of impressions and click counts. So, if you are a sponsor you will have at least three or more ads on our sites. You will have the home page logo, an editorial banner run with each story, and a full page ad in your department. By the end of the year you could have 30 or more editorial banners running with each company or tech mention.

For instance Belt Drives Limited received the following impressions and clicks for the last year:

Home Page Impressions: 3,061,166
Clicks: 6592

Editorial Banner impressions: 122,282
Clicks: 1023

Department ad impressions: 14698
Click Counts: 858

That’s 706 customers a month going to their site. Not bad. Wait, if we’ve been running this set of ads for two years, that’s 353 customers a month.

The best aspect of Bikernet marketing is our service:
We don’t have page limitations. If you have a 10-page tech we can post it.

We post the news twice a week.

We post the blog every day.

We can cover everything you do, and each time run a link or your linked banner with each mention. What could be better? Plus, the price is beyond reasonable.

JIMS TOOL OF THE WEEK– JIMS No. 746 Tappet Adjustment Tool.

JIMS tappet adjustment tool simplifies the way to verify proper tappet adjustment. After adjusting the tappet, simply insert the tip of this tool under the hydraulic unit retaining clip, above the pushrod seat. Similar to a “Go No-Go Gauge”, if the tip doesn’t fit between the clip and pushrod seat OR if there is up and down end play, then the tappet is out of adjustment.

Only when the tip fits nicely with no end play is the tappet properly adjusted.

JIMS No. 746 has a suggested retail price of $24.00, is made in the USA with a lifetime warranty.

For more info, contact sales@jimsusa.com, visit www.jimsusa.com, or call (805) 482-6913.

BIKERNET BAD JOKE LIBRARY NOW OPEN– Someone stole all my credit cards, but I won’t be reporting it. The thief spends less than my wife did.

My wife and I went to a hotel where we got a waterbed. My wife calls it the Dead Sea.

My Wife was at the beauty shop for two hours. That was only for the estimate. She got a mudpack and looked great for two days. Then the mud fell off.

CHECK THE CENTER FOR METAL ARTS– The Center for Metal Arts is a community of metal artists, makers, and students exploring new skills or mastering advanced techniques in the metal arts.

Established in 2003, the Center for Metal Arts attracts resident, regional and international instructors, and the staff includes award-winning blacksmiths and designers, studio techs and support staff.

Two major learning tracks offer beginner to advanced workshops in Blacksmithing and Small Metals, and a strong visiting artist program contributes to an ongoing mission to add diverse topics and talents to the foundation curriculum.

Located in New York’s picturesque Warwick Valley, CMA is accessible by bus from NYC, and major highways and airports.

Rhoda Mack’s interest in the arts comes from her love of pattern and deep process in the sciences and the natural world, and the craftsmanship that explores these connections. Her background in writing and the fiber arts taught her how the process of creating sharpens one’s eye for the nuance of line, form and color, and how making things is a keen teacher of whom we are as the creator.

As the director of the Center for Metal Arts, Rhoda’s interest is the connections that we build with one another and with ourselves as artists and makers. Her interest is in holding a space where makers, artists and craftspeople can learn to build in the metals, explore new metal forming techniques, learn survival skills, and join a community of makers. Her interest is in the way that beautiful new important work comes when we ourselves grow as artists.

Adjacent to the Center for Metal Arts is the fabrication workshop of Fine Architectural Metalsmiths, where Rhoda tag-teams projects on an award-winning roster of furniture design, restoration projects, gates and lighting since 1981. She can take you on a tour of the upstairs gallery collection with its museum of samples and processes in the architectural metal arts.

POLITICAL PLATFORM FOR 2016—
I don’t know about you, but I’m sick of the same issues always being discussed by politicians, while the government runs amuck.

I’m working on a series of questions to ask any candidate running for office. I few solid fixes and this country would sing again.

Tort reform
Fix our Medical System
Respect Freedom and support education
Gun training and education for everyone
Return of the trade schools

A few items would make Americans financially secure, proud again, united, confident again, and secure. Let me know what I should add to this list.

UNCLE MONKEY ON SOMETHING DIFFERENT–
“I love your bike!” Being the self absorbed conceited guy I am it’s something I stride for in all my bikes. I like, no, I need to stand out from the crowd.

I usually accomplish what I set out by paying attention to detail and using any color other than black. I am caught off guard hearing it about the Rat King though. The bike was hastily thrown together to offer Mrs. Monkey someplace to ride while in Sturgis this year. The new stretch saddle bags are unpainted, the OEM rear fender is stripped of all ornament, the front fender is red, the headlight nacelle is hacked up to make it fit, unfinished and only in primer, and the gas tank has a HUGE dent in the side of it. But it runs and that was the main goal for the moment.

Other pieces are waiting for the cold months to be worked on and added. To give the bike just a little attitude I scribbled out a rat skull with some crossed wrenches behind it, cut it out and spray bombed the silhouette on the tanks, a Rat Fink was hacked up to be on the side of the saddlebags.

It satisfied my need to be just that little bit different. The surprising thing is I get stopped, get more compliments on it than any other bike I’ve built. I was shrugging off the first few as sarcasm (and some are just that) but in talking with people there was true sincerity in the compliment. In the age of high dollar baggers and factory faux distressed paint jobs the Rat King stands out as an honest bike.

For people it is a glimpse into the process of building a bike. They know I am doing the work and that it just wasn’t another stroked cheque for a finished bike. They know I don’t mind getting my hands dirty spinning the wrenches to bring a bike to life. They know that I don’t want to be just another in the crowd, another black ElectraGlide.

People have little concern for the dent in the tank or that the bike is unfinished. It’s just part of the appeal. In Sturgis they were walking past many beautiful bikes just to take a picture of the Rat King, the anti big buck bagger. It is the dirt under the nails, it is the grease stained work shirt loosely buttoned on a hot day, the truck stop waitress, domestic beer, and cheering for the underdog. And maybe that is what society needs a little of today, a step back from the prepackaged rebellion, chain store i-World. A break from the instantaneous consumption disposable world we have become.

The bike was broken, discarded from life but instead of crushing it, it is being fixed, repaired, revived, the ultimate recycle. It brings back fond memories of returning glass pop bottles, local TV repair shop, grandpa working in the shed sharpening the lawn mower blade. A little glimpse back to when this nation was truly great.

WELFARE FROM STATE TO STATE STUDY–
Here is a link to a CATO institute study on current welfare programs… has some great facts and figures. Pay particular attention to the top 15 states which pay more in welfare than the respective median income workers salary. Or notice how 8 of 10 households in North Dakota are subsidized…..

http://object.cato.org/sites/cato.org/files/pubs/pdf/the_work_versus_welfare_trade-off_2013_wp.pdf

I’m not quite sure we can blame illegal immigrants or those who choose to be unemployed. I think you would have to be an idiot to refuse this free aid. Instead, I propose that honest workers are the true ignorant people in this country. Honest and loaded with self respect…. yet horribly ignorant.

CALIFORNIA SENATE BILL 350 a highway that goes the wrong way– One of my dear mother’s favorite sayings to me as a teenager was, “Good intentions pave the way to hell.” Currently our Legislature has a bill that will certainly pave the way there.

It is impossible to keep up with the thousands of bills proposed in Sacramento. By the time this session ends there will be nearly 5,000 bills for the year. There is no reason for all people to know what each and every bill is about. However, when a bill has the ability to completely change their lives for the worse, they ought to pay attention.

Senate Bill 350 is one such bill.

In an effort to show the world that California is a leader in “climate change” (formerly known as global warming until it was proven there has been no warming in 17 years) Senate President Pro Tempore Kevin de Leon proposed SB 350 – The Gasoline Restriction Act of 2015 – that will not only cripple the state, but also the very people he has vowed to protect – those in low-income neighborhoods.

De Leon’s SB 350 is ultimately a gasoline-rationing act. The bill gives the California Air Resources Board free rein to enact a mandatory 50 percent gasoline and diesel fuel restriction (8 billion gallons annually) by the year 2030.

To meet the mandate, the state air resources board will be able to ration gas, place mobility restrictions on state residents, place surcharges on family mini-vans, trucks and SUVs, and even monitor individuals’ fuel consumption records.

You have to wonder how these mandates and restrictions will affect not only the state’s economy but its people.

Low-income communities will be hit hardest as they are the least able to afford any kind of cost increase. SB 350 would not only limit how far they can afford to drive through gas price increases and surcharges on their older vehicles, it could also impose “forced purchasing,” requiring people to buy new electric cars.

De Leon is quoted regularly for being an advocate for the low-income population, yet if SB 350 passes, that very population would be hit the hardest.

Californians need to know and act to protect themselves from the devastating effects of this bill on their lives.

The California Air Resources Board, an unelected group of bureaucrats, will be given full authority to meet the restriction mandate in any way its members see fit with no oversight permitted by our elected representatives.

Families, commuters, small businesses, local law enforcement and even transportation funding could be placed in the cross hairs. It is amazing irony that roads and highways are in terrible condition yet they are now in jeopardy of losing funding.

Yes, California roads are in terrible condition. Many plans have been thrown around to lessen the gap between needs and revenue; an increase in gas taxes being one of them. The amazing irony is that more than $9 billion of existing gas tax receipts would disappear under SB 350 and that it doesn’t appropriate any funding toward road repairs.

California drivers and families need someone to watch out for them and take their needs into account. I’m calling on our representatives in the state Assembly, Bill Dodd and Jim Frazier, to help us in this endeavor.

The proposed benefits of SB 350 are speculative. The costs are certain. What is in it for us?

Our Assembly members have the responsibility to vote no on SB 350. Protect the people of California. Our state has done more than enough with regard to climate change. The Legislature should focus on what California residents really need – a strong economy and good jobs – instead of dragging us down this highway to nowhere.

–by Betty Plowman, who is a member of the Right Stuff Committee.

READERS COMMENTS ABOUT HOT BIKE BAGGERS– I like your magazine but unfortunately l will never renew my subscription again and will take every opportunity to encourage other’s to do the same. Your customer service dept has been trained well in the art of BS’s customers to your scam of not delivering on the duffle bags.

I know at least 25 subscribers in the Atlanta motorcycle community that subscribe to your magazine and will encourage more to not subscribe to your magazine again. If you guys had no intentions of mailing out duffle bag then why say so….I will post this on every motorcycle publication I run across.

–Deborah Berkey Shull

We have subscribed to this magazine off and on for many years… Although we really enjoy the magazine this will be the last time we bother. We received an offer last year in July by mail for a super reduced rate of $6.00 for 12 issues of the magazine (if you sent a check in with the offer) which I did.

All was good and we started receiving the magazine. A couple of months ago we started getting “NOTICES” that our payment was due!! We have been down this road before with them, so I kept every single document related to the order. I sent them all my copies last month, including the check copy, and they are still sending us late notices!

The last time we dealt with them I had to go as far as getting a copy of the cancelled check from our bank to prove to them the payment was made – not to mention that cost me a fee with the bank! I have no idea who is in charge of their receivables for subscriptions and payments, but it is the worst run organization I have ever dealt with in my entire life!

Since we are in July 2015 our subscription is over…I’m going to ignore these Notices and never do business with this ill run company again! Good luck to all of you who are waiting for “gifts” you haven’t received.

I wouldn’t hold my breath!! If there was ever an organization that needed to be reported to the BBB this is it!

BIKERNET GUN NUT REPORT–
California: Los Angeles Will be Sued to Invalidate Newly Passed Ordinance Banning So-Called “Large-Capacity Magazines”

After a two year delay, the Los Angeles City Council passed an ordinance banning the possession of magazines capable of holding more than ten rounds (so-called “large-capacity” magazines). Unfortunately, Mayor Eric Garcetti signed this ill-conceived and troubling magazine ban into law on August 7, 2015.

The NRA is supporting a lawsuit challenging the ordinance.

Unlike the state’s magazine law, individuals in the City of Los Angeles currently in lawful possession of these magazines will not be protected by a “grandfather” clause. This ordinance effectively amounts to confiscation because the lawfully-owned magazines must either be turned in to the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) or removed from within city limits. Both options eliminate the inherent value in these magazines as tools for self-defense. As such, attorneys bringing the lawsuit plan to ask the court to stop the ordinance from taking effect before Los Angeles residents are permanently deprived of their property.

Sunnyvale and San Francisco have already adopted similar ordinances, and both of those ordinances have likewise been challenged in court. The NRA supported the case against the Sunnyvale ordinance that is currently awaiting a trial after the Ninth Circuit ruled against an attempt to prevent the ordinance from going into effect, reasoning that more facts are needed before a complete analysis can be done by the Court as to the ordinance’s constitutionality.

This ordinance will not prevent violent crime or mass shootings, but it does limit the Second Amendment rights of law-abiding gun owners who choose these magazines to defend themselves and their families. As most gun owners already know, magazines holding more than ten rounds are standard equipment for many popular pistols and rifles, especially those that are selected for defensive purposes. These standard capacity magazines are possessed by millions of law-abiding Americans for a variety of lawful purposes, including self-defense.

Ordinances like these give insight into what anti-gun activists will pursue if given the opportunity. Law-abiding citizens who are in compliance with California’s already burdensome gun laws are not a public safety threat, yet Sunnyvale, San Francisco, and now Los Angeles are seeking to turn the law-abiding into criminals one step at a time. While court battles against these ordinances continue, the best option for gun owners is to ensure that their elected representatives, including those at the local level, understand that ineffective, ideologically-driven restrictions on our Second Amendment rights have consequences at the ballot box.

BIKERNET BAD JOKE LIBRARY OPEN–
Today I had to go to Lowe’s. As I approached the entrance, I noticed a driver looking for a parking space.

I flagged the driver and pointed out a handicap parking space that was open and
available.

The driver looked puzzled, rolled down her window and said, “I’m not
handicapped!”

Well, as you can imagine, my face was red! “Oh, I’m sorry,” I said. “I saw your
‘I’m Ready for Hillary’ bumper sticker and just assumed that you suffer from a mental disorder.”

She gave me the finger and screamed some nasty names at me. Boy! Some

THE AUSTRALIAN CLUB REPORT–
Concerns more Australian states could hastily roll out anti-bikie laws to avoid being ‘safe havens’
August 26th 2015

There are fears tough anti-bikie laws could be hastily rolled out across Australia by states desperate to avoid becoming “safe havens” for outlaw motorcycle clubs and their members.

Experts are concerned the laws will be rolled out across the country before they are proven to actually work.

The fears come as the South Australian Government has implemented such legislation without waiting for the results of an investigation in Queensland that is reviewing the effectiveness of that state’s anti-bikie laws.

The anti-association laws stop outlaw motorcycle club members meeting in public, have closed down certain clubhouses and stop people wearing their colours in pubs.

A legal academic and a defence lawyer said they were concerned other jurisdictions like Western Australia and the Northern Territory may follow suit for fear of becoming “safe havens” for bikies.

University of Queensland law lecturer Rebecca Ananian-Welsh said there were two reviews underway into the Queensland laws.

If Queensland keeps the laws, South Australia’s got them we will probably see them roll out across Australia.

“We’ve seen very few prosecutions, but we have seen a reduction in visibility,” she said.

“There’s no proven effectiveness of actually stopping what people are worried about, which is the drug trade or organised crime or guns.”

She said she was surprised the SA Government took on the laws before the Queensland reviews were completed.

“It just seems quite shocking that the South Australian Government wouldn’t just sit back and take the easy road and let these reviews actually go ahead and see what comes out of them,” she said.

Ms Ananian-Welsh said she was concerned other jurisdictions like WA and the NT would look at adopting the laws.

“If Queensland keeps the laws [and] South Australia’s got them, we will probably see them roll out across Australia,” she said.

“One of the most troubling things with that is the effectiveness of these laws hasn’t been proven, but that fear mongering goes on and that fear that other states will become a safe haven.

“It’s what happened with control orders and those orders were proven to be completely ineffective and it was that ineffectiveness that prompted these new laws in Queensland.”

Laws will force groups underground.

South Australian defense lawyer Craig Caldicott said the laws would likely be challenged in court once they were used.

He agreed other states were likely to look at the laws.

“The net result of all that will be that these people will go underground, they’ll still be part of the group but they won’t be visible out there,” Mr Caldicott said.

“In the same way the mafia and triads aren’t.”

Ms Ananian-Welsh said it was time for governments to try to find a better answer for dealing with organized crime.

“It really is time to sit back and take stock and say look we’ve experimented with control orders, we actually have a lot of criminal laws aimed at organized crime,” she said.

“Is more law the answer? Or is perhaps more police funding the answer? Do we need more cops on the ground?

“Actually take stock of these things that we’ve had in place, rather than just enacting, enacting, enacting new laws that get harsher and harsher.”

The SA Government and police force say the new laws will help disrupt and dismantle serious and organized crime groups in the state.

STURGIS REPORT FROM IRON TRADER–
Eagle 75

Bikers at the Sturgis 75th this year had the opportunity to fly with the eagle and be a part of history – literally! When the Buffalo Chip’s Freedom Celebration riders rolled into the Crossroads on Thursday August 6th hundreds of riders were already in place to meet them at the field of Flags to help create the Eagle 75, a giant eagle made of motorcycles and people to commemorate the 75th Anniversary of the Sturgis Rally. This was no rowdy crowd squeezing together on Main Street for another annual picture – it was bigger, way bigger, in every way.

Inspired by a human eagle formed by soldiers and nurses in 1918, this mega montage of bodies and bikes was arranged by artist John Quigley of SpectralQ to form the image of a soaring eagle. Quigley then photographed the happening from a helicopter flying overhead. The historic event was presented by Black Hills Clean Water Alliance, the Chip, and SpectralQ – and it was as cool as it looks.

A chance like this only comes along every 75 years.

THAT’S NOT ALL— I drove a forklift last week. Of course I crashed into a couple of items, busting some wheels off a rusting drill press stand. I need to fix them this weekend. A brother came over and and busted our automatic gate railing with another fork lift. The redhead bought a chunk of 1-inch angle iron and I need to cut out the bad piece and insert the new one and weld it.

I got a call from Kent Weeks, of Lucky Devil Metal Works in Houston, Texas. We may see tube bending for the frame next week. Hang on. A brother sent me an article about reminiscing about the past. That’s cool, but we’ve got new shit to do, new books to write, finish that screenplay, build a bronze sculpture, and party.

Next week we will bring you special reports about WACO. I still say it was a cop set-up, but we will see as the evidence unfolds. We will bring you new features, antiques in the Cantina, and Barnett clutch tech from Rogue. I still want to get together with Eric Bennett at Bennett’s Performance and complete the Twevo article.

Hang on as the action never stops around the Bikernet Nerve Center.

Ride Free Forever,

–Bandit
