Hey,

This is a tough one. I’ve been waiting for weeks for insurance approval for a root canal. Yesterday my tooth said, “Enough is enough,” and initiated a pain procedure that kicked me right in the ass. I grabbed the phone immediately. So tomorrow I will be strapped under the buzzing effects of a high-speed dremel tool. So, if I don’t make any sense today, that’s my excuse.

I’m working with a handful of riders, and a very cute Asian woman on writing a grant proposal. We are calling it the Ultimate Safety Grant, and we need to write it quick, before it’s too late. I will bring you clips from it over the coming weeks and months, but here’s a teaser.

Somewhere in the Declaration of Independence it speaks about the “Pursuit of Happiness.” It doesn’t discuss the pursuit of safety or the pursuit of restrictions. There are lots of ways to be safe without restrictions, laws, and requirements. And we hope to paint a clear picture that will open some eyes and avoid more restrictions. So let’s hit the news, and remember the pursuit of happiness is building and riding custom motorcycles in a free society. Yes!

The Wild One is a 1953 American outlaw biker film. The story took a cue from an actual biker street party on the Fourth of July weekend in 1947 in Hollister, California that was elaborately trumped up in the July 21, 1947 issue of Life Magazine, and dubbed the Hollister riot, with staged photographs of wild motorcycle outlaw revelers.

SENATE OKAYS NEW PENALTIES TO PROTECT MOTORCYCLISTS–

Raleigh, N.C. — The Senate made quick work Monday night of a bill that increases penalties for drivers whose unsafe movements cause serious motorcycle accidents.

If a driver causes a motorcycle wreck that results in serious bodily injury or at least $5,000 in property damage, Senate Bill 353 would increase the minimum fine for the driver to from $500 to $750.

The infraction would cost four points on the driver’s license, and a judge could also choose to temporarily suspend the driver’s license for up to 30 days.

Sponsored by Sen. Kathy Harrington, R-Gaston, the bill passed 48-0 with no debate and now moves to the House.

WILL THEY BAN KNIVES NEXT?–At least 14 hurt in stabbing spree on Texas campus; suspect believed to be student.

At least 14 people were hurt Tuesday in a stabbing spree at a Texas community college apparently carried out by a student, authorities said. Sheriff’s officials said the suspect was in custody.

At least two victims were in critical condition. It was not immediately clear how severe the other injuries were. The stabbing happened at the CyFair campus of Lone Star College, in the Houston suburb of Cypress.

Harris County Sheriff Adrian Garcia said that authorities were not certain what the weapon or motive was. He said the suspect was 21 years old.

AUSTRALIAN BAN ON COLORS IN VICTORIAN BARS AND CLUBS–Motorcycle club members wearing their colors could be permanently barred from Melbourne pubs and clubs – but only if the Victorian Government empowers authorities to do it. Temporary bans on bikers wearing patches in licensed venues are being enforced elsewhere in Australia.

The State Government has not ruled out giving authorities the power to issue temporary or permanent blanket bans on patched members having a beer at licensed venues.

When asked if Victoria would consider changing legislation to include patch bans, Crime Prevention Minister Andrew McIntosh’s spokesman James Talia said: “We’re open to it if police decide they need this power. We’re not ruling it out, but it’s not on the agenda. Any legislation changes would be directed at police, not licensing inspectors.”
But Victoria Police – responsible for issuing bans on behalf of the licensing commission – said it would not comment on legislation changes.
The commission also refused to comment on policy.

Unlike some other states, Victorian authorities do not have the power to place temporary or permanent blanket bans on biker colors in pubs and clubs.

Instead police are encouraging strip clubs, bars and nightclubs to knock back bikers based on their dress code.

Detective Superintendent Brett Guerin said some late-night licensees had implemented self-imposed bans to keep members in club colours out of their venues.

Crown casino placed a ban on patched bikers about six months ago, but the move reportedly created conflict between members and bouncers. Detective Supt Guerin said the self-imposed bans had been working to reduce the potential for conflict.

“Police have seen incidents escalate in the past between patch-wearing OMCG members inside licensed venues,” he said.
“(We) support any strategies that mitigate the risk of violent behaviour.”

DEATH AT BIKERNET MEDICAL CENTER–A very prestigious cardiologist died, and was given a very elaborate funeral by the hospital he worked for most of his life.

A huge heart…covered in flowers stood behind the casket during the service. All the doctors from the hospital sat in awe. Following the eulogy, the heart opened, and the casket rolled inside. The heart then closed, sealing the doctor in the beautiful heart forever.

At that point, one of the mourners just burst into laughter. With all eyes staring at him, he said,’I am so sorry, I was just thinking of my own funeral… I’m a gynecologist.’

HOW TO STAY OUT OF JAIL DURING THE EL DIABLO RUN–Talking to Jake (two-time Curculo de la Muerte winner) over the weekend brought up a good point. He was telling the story about a couple of guys who got rolled up by the San Felipe cops last time.

Here’s the deal and how to avoid the hassle: No Fireworks in Camp. It’s simple as that. The palapas are roofed with old, dry thatched palm fronds and go up in flames in a snap. The people who run the camps are our friends and let us get away with a hell-raising good time, but they’ve nicely asked that we don’t blow shit up in the camp. Go down the beach, fine. Wanna wrap your buddy’s Honda in det cord and blow it to kingdom come? Drag it out to the Circle of Death track and have at it.

If it’s your first time on the EDR, realize that it’s a big party. It’s loud, people get drunk, it goes all night and it’s not the best environment for a good night’s sleep. So, if that’s a big deal to you, move further down the beach a ways, get a hotel or jam up the road about a mile north and camp there. Otherwise, grab a beer and have fun. There will be no lights-out at 10:00PM so get with it, or avoid it. This is an adult party; please don’t bring kids or sensitive types.

Where the cops come in to the picture is if you do decide to disrespect the deal we have with the camp owners. The 60-year old securidad is surely not going to tackle a posse of a dozen dudes to get them to stop. He’ll call his bros at the Policia, and they’ll roll in later, pick a couple guys at random and off to jail you go. Depending on what you have in your pocket, who got hurt, etc. you could be there for a night or two or maybe longer.

We don’t make these rules or enforce them, the last thing I’m interested in is baby sitting grown men or being the hall monitor. So come have a good time, but stay out of jail!

BIKERNET ACCIDENT INVESTIGATION–Drug items found on a man accused of plowing into a group of motorcyclists last year will be allowed as evidence at trial, a Fond du Lac County judge has ruled.

Clinton Lovelace, 26, of Hilbert, is accused of driving into a group of Muskegon motorcyclists in May on Highway 151 north of Fond du Lac. Two cyclists were killed and eight were injured.
On Wednesday, Fond du Lac County Circuit Court Judge Gary Sharpe ruled that evidence found on Lovelace at the time of the crash would be admissable during the court trial.

Public defender Mary Wolfe made a motion to suppress evidence consisting of syringes and narcotics that were found in Lovelace’s pockets.
Fond du Lac County Assistant District Attorney Dennis Krueger and investigators argued that the findings should be admitted because the search of Lovelace’s items was more of an inventory rather than an investigation to search or seize things belonging to the defendant.

Wolfe argued investigators should have obtained a search warrant prior to going through a bag of items belonging to Lovelace, and therefore should not be admitted.

Sharpe denied the motion by Lovelace’s attorney to suppress evidence – meaning the drug evidence may be allowed in future hearings.

According to the criminal complaint, while attempting to quiet a cell phone in the jeans pocket belonging to Lovelace, investigators found two syringes and what appeared to be two small plastic bags sealed with brown paper.

Investigators believe the items were acid, according to the complaint.

“Once at the hospital, it was brought to the officers’ attention by hospital staff there was a bag and a cellphone that continued to ring in the bag and the officer was asked to deal with it,” Sharpe said. “The officer checked the wallet of the pants and then proceeded to remove the cellphone and in doing so, observed one or more syringes and thereafter discovered what (the investigator) believed to be a controlled substance.”

At the time, investigators did not know the bag belonged to Lovelace, but Sharpe said the finding of syringes in Lovelace’s pocket with his cellphone was enough evidence to investigate further and admit the evidence into court.

“There was a question about who owned the items and several questions remained for purposes of the investigation,” Sharpe said. “The evidence that I’ve heard so far is there was no knowledge of whose clothes were actually in the bag and neither the hospital nor their staff removed the clothing. I am satisfied the environment of the emergency room was hectic and chaotic.”

According to the criminal complaint, Lovelace crossed the centerline of Highway 151 while traveling in the town of Taycheedah and hit a group of motorcyclists who were on a circle tour from Michigan. Two of the bikers, Daniel Winsemius and Douglas Yonkers were killed, and eight others were injured.

Lovelace told investigators he uses Adderall and Xanax daily, but could not remember if he had taken the medications the morning of the crash.
According to the criminal complaint, one of the bikers told investigators Lovelace’s vehicle traveled over the centerline quickly, “almost like it jerked over.”

Lovelace is charged with two counts of homicide by intoxicated use of a vehicle, three counts of injury by intoxicated use of a vehicle, five counts of second-degree recklessly endangering safety, two counts of bail jumping and one count of possession of a controlled substance.

Dozens of bikers attended the hearing Wednesday to show support for the motorcyclists involved in the crash.

“We’re pleased by the decision to allow the evidence in court,” said Dave “Chubby” Charlebois, executive director of ABATE of Wisconsin. “This is a very serious case and we intend to follow it through to the end. This is more than a drug involvement case. It shows serious intent.”

ABATE of Wisconsin is a motorcycle rights and safety organization dedicated to freedom of the road and safety for all motorcyclists, according to the organization’s website.

Lovelace is being held at the Fond du Lac County Jail on a $75,000 cash bond. Wolfe asked that the case be set for trial.

According to court records Harley-Davidson has sold its test track in eastern Collier County, Florida to Chrysler for $7 million– Purchased in 2002 for $6.5 million from Collier Enterprises Ltd. Harley had been using the track for hot weather testing until 4 years ago when it moved its testing to its Kingman, Arizona facility.

Ford Motor Company had been leasing the 531-acre property, which sits on the edge of the Everglades, with its 6 mile long track for testing its vehicles until Harley purchased it. Harley had been asking $7.5 million for the site which it put up for sale in 2011.The property had drawn interest from several other groups including local car clubs.

Gives an all new meaning to bling. It’s by no mere coincidence that their uniforms resemble Russian uniforms of the 1950s, and hats designed to make them look taller.

Most metals and ribbons usually indicate campaigns where one fought, other theatres where one was stationed, or wounds received. Since they haven’t been in any wars since 1950, then in their cases it must mean a lot of good conduct or present at roll call. Very impressive indeed.

Valerie Thompson returns to Ohio to defend land speed records at Hot Rod Magazine Top Speed Challenge–One of the world’s fastest females on two wheels hopes to join ECTA 200 MPH Club.

Valerie Thompson, owner/driver of Valerie Thompson Racing, will return to Wilmington Ohio’s Airborne Park for the East Coast Timing Association’s Hot Rod Magazine Top Speed Challenge, April 27 – 28.

The Top Speed Challenge is the ECTA’s season opening featuring 200 mph street legal cars and motorcycles with prizes and awards for the fastest racing time in only two classes – Street and Super Street.

Last year, Thompson set three land speed records during the ECTA’s Ohio Mile and Throttle Nation Top Speed Challenge events with her BMW S 1000 RR.

“Needless to say, I love the ECTA and racing in Ohio. We set three records last year, but we just missed joining the ECTA’s ‘200 MPH Club’ since our top event speed was 198.31 mph. I’m confident I can break 200 at an ECTA event this year due to dramatic performance improvements we’ve made with HP Race Parts and MS Production carbon fiber race bodywork,” stated Thompson.

Thompson has already earned membership to the ‘Texas Mile 200 MPH Club’ this year with a personal best speed of 212 mph. “My BMW S1000RR was made for events like Hot Rod Magazine’s Top Speed Challenge. CRAZED NOTION OF THE WEEK– Just the patent we’ve patiently been waiting for all these years. Back in 2008 this patent was filed and adjusted in 2009. The patent has one reason for being, and that is for deflecting air flows that magically hit you in the face.

According to the patent holder, Jerry H Biglake, air flows from the motorcycle’s front wheel and than upwards via the knees of the rider, hitting you squarely in the face, like so:

At least, that is what he supposes. What Jerry proposes is to mount a deflector on the biker’s knees that will deflect the airflow coming from the front wheels. Like this:

So if you look at the diagram, the lower air moves via the front wheel and then it tends to rise magically up and hit the biker in the face. I haven’t been on a cruiser or custom for decades now, but I cannot remember ever having that problem, at any speed, Have you?

So according to Jerry, by putting this device on your knees, you will not be bothered by the wind hitting you in the face.

Another amazing week in Southern California. We have a solid appointment with Juan at Colorado Custom early Saturday to attack our shifting linkage. A through shaft/bushing has been machined, we have the linkage and the to-be-trimmed mounting bracket. Time to finish this part of the build as we inch closer to the street and Bonneville. Just 121 short days until scrutinizing on the salt. Time flies when you least expect it to? Or does it?.

One year ago we were officially on the R/T Performance, Rick Tedder frame table in Salem, Oregon. Starting with two pieces of 20-foot pipe, 28 degrees of rake, a 72-inch wheel base idea and a few precision chalk marks on the table.

The only known fact in this wild idea was the tried and trued Hyperformance/R&R Cycle Hardtailz tuned 124 inch Twin Cam drive train combination that had successfully rolled coast to coast with over 75,000 happy miles. The last 5,000 miles we added a variable vane Turbo built by Turbo Doc/Aerocharger. Seemed to work just fine with instant, predictable power. To much power for the Dyna frame when the power was applied. Here we are today with a state of the art Busa suspension, Turbo, 124-inch Twin Cam.

Hang on tight.

We’re on track for a stellar year on the street and on the Bonneville Salt Flats with Bub.

CAMP CADET MOTORCYCLE RUN–For all you riders in the Western Pennsylvania area here’s a cool ride that helps give the young people in the area a chance to learn how to stay focused and give them direction.

It’s the annual “Camp Cadet Motorcycle Run” which is held yearly by the troopers of the Pennsylvania State Police stationed at the Kittanning, PA barracks. The ride begins at 11 AM from the parking lot of Lenape Vo-Tech School on Chaplin Ave., Ford City, PA on May 19, 2013.

Registration is from 9 – 11 and costs $20/rider and $10/passenger. There will be coffee and donuts in the morning plus food, beverages, raffles and entertainment after the ride concludes.

Go Dallas!!!!!!!The City of Dallas, Texas passed an ordinance stating that if a driver is pulled over by law enforcement and is not able to provide proof of insurance, the car is towed. To retrieve the car after being impounded, they must show proof of insurance to have the car released.

This has made it easy for the City of Dallas to remove uninsured cars. Shortly after the “No Insurance” ordinance was passed, Dallas impound lots began to fill up and were full after only nine days. Over 80% of the impounded cars were driven by illegals.

Now, not only must they provide proof of insurance to have their car released, they have to pay for the cost of the tow, a $350 fine, and $20 for every day their car is kept in the lot.

Guess what? Accident rates have gone down 47% and . . . Dallas ‘ solution gets uninsured drivers off the road WITHOUT making them show proof of nationality. I wonder how the ACLU or the Justice Department will get around this one. Just brings tears to your eyes doesn’t it?

Over the weekend, we came four votes away from the United States Senate giving our Constitutional rights over to the United Nations. In a 53-46 vote, the senate narrowly passed a measure that will stop the United States from entering into the United Nations Arms Trade Treaty.

The Statement of Purpose from the bill read:
To uphold Second Amendment rights and prevent the United States from entering into the United Nations Arms Trade Treaty.

The U.N. Small Arms Treaty, which has been championed by the Obama Administration, would have effectively placed a global ban on the import and export of small firearms. The ban would have affected all private gun owners in the U.S., and had language that would have implemented an international gun registry on all private guns and ammo.

Astonishingly, 46 of our United States Senators were willing to give away our Constitutional rights to a foreign power.

THE LEARNING OF UNCLE MONKEY–Like many riders out there my first experience riding a motorcycle was as a young kid. The first motorcycle I stranded my leg over was a Honda Z50. That little powerhouse propelled me across the fields and down the roads in a freedom that couldn’t be matched. As I grew the bikes got larger, got faster. With it came learning curves as I learnt to handle these increments.

I admit I had my fair share of crashes and falls. But each bike was a steppingstone to the next bike. Today my bike Snow White is 113-inch monster putting out over 110 horses to the rear wheel. It is a lot of bike but it took me a long time to reach that point.

Today in Saskatchewan and many jurisdictions all that is required to ride a motorcycle is to pass a written test. The only way to learn how to ride is to get out there and do it however we currently have no limits or regulations on what size of motorcycle, how much horsepower, how fast a motorcycle can go. Our province assumes that we are responsible enough to buy the right motorcycle and we should but we’re not.

When I was first looking for a bike for Mrs Monkey to learn on the salesman at the local dealership gave me the hard sell to buy her a GSXR-1100. WTF. That bike would be a lot for me with over 35 years riding experience let alone an inexperience rider like my wife. I have seen too many times inexperience riders buying bikes like that. I have seen the accidents that have resulted from those decisions.

Everyone should have to take a defensive motorcycle riding course before they are allowed to ride their own motorcycle and the horsepower should be capped off. The majority of motorcycle accidents happen to riders in the first three years of riding. Motorcycle manufactures make entry level bikes and are adding new models every year. There is no reason an inexperienced rider’s first bike should be capable of 200 mph.

So what is the answer? Take a motorcycle riding class. Encourage everyone you know to take a motorcycle riding class and realize its not about who gets there the fastest but who gets there safe.

Bill to Ban ALL Lead Ammunition for Hunting to be Heard Next Week Call AND E-Mail Members of the Assembly Committee on Water, Parks, and Wildlife TODAY!–

It is deja vu all over again. Assembly Bill 711, supported by radical self-proclaimed environmental organizations, is an expanded lead ammunition ban that was introduced in the state legislature this year.

In August 2012, the California Fish and Game Commission refused to expand the current lead ammunition ban in the condor range because a serious scientific inquiry into the actual source of lead poisoning in condors was again underway! Unfortunately, this did not make the animal “rights” activists happy and once again NRA will be opposing Assembly Bill 711. AB 711 is scheduled to be heard in the Assembly Committee on Water, Parks, and Wildlife on Tuesday, April 16, at 9 a.m. in State Capitol room 437 (Listen to this hearing). Several misguided groups are pushing AB 711, despite the NRA and CRPA having demonstrated that existing lead ammo bans have not been effective in lowering blood-lead levels in condors, and despite the debunking of some of the key scientific papers used to justify the existing lead ammunition ban for hunting in the condor zone. Proponents of AB 711 are using faulty scientific papers — where researchers have been found to be hiding underlying data and avoiding further peer scrutiny — to achieve their agenda of banning lead ammunition, and even hunting, altogether.

Lead ban proponents have no intention of stopping with a ban on lead ammunition. Humane Society President and CEO Wayne Pacelle has stated, “We are going to use the ballot box and the democratic process to stop all hunting in the United States. We will take it species by species until all hunting is stopped in California. Then we will take it state by state.”

The Audubon Society is also pushing AB 711. Their involvement raises conflict of interest concerns because the current executive director of Audubon California is in fact, Commissioner Michael Sutton. Sutton was recently elected President of the California Fish and Game Commission, and is responsible for forming the working committee to investigate the real source of lead poisoning in condors. Though Sutton has said, “Most of us [on the Commission] feel it is inappropriate to use the presidency as a bully pulpit for your views,” Sutton nonetheless did noting to stop his organization from cosponsoring AB 711, which will side step the Commission’s scientific investigation into the real source of lead poisoning in condors and other wildlife.

It is easy to figure out why these lead ban proponents introduced AB 711. The facts and the science do not support an expansion of the current lead ammunition ban. Under the heightened scrutiny from the Department or Commission, where “the science has got to make sense or else you’re not going to sell the rest of us [on a lead ammunition ban], that’s for darn sure.” (Commissioner Rogers at the August 8, 2012 meeting). They fear their junk-“science” will be seen for what it is, or is not. Now these agenda-driven groups intend to avoid serious scientific scrutiny by instead arm-twisting the politicians in the state legislature.

This is exactly how they were able to obtain the initial lead ammunition ban, Assembly Bill 821, in 2008, which has scientifically been proven to be a failure.

To prove the durability of its motorcycles, American Honda sent a CL72 Scrambler on a 950 mile trek through rocks, sand washes, dry lake beds, mountain passes and paved roads. Fifty years later, that 1960s run is remembered for initiating one of the most significant off-road races for both two
and four wheeled vehicles in the world–the Baja 1000.

Legendary racers Dave Ekins and Parnelli Jones will help the Petersen Automotive Museum
honor Baja with a tribute dinner, one-day off road show, and summer-long exhibition: Braving Baja, 1,000 Miles to Glory, presented by American Honda Motorcycle Division.

The Petersen will host its Baja Tribute Dinner on May 2 at 6:00p.m. Dave Ekins and Bill Robertson Jr. will be honored for their daring, first timed run down the Baja peninsula with American Honda. Parnelli Jones, a renowned racer of all genres will be honored at the tribute for his off-road racing success, including multiple Baja 1000, Baja 500
and Mint 400 wins in his famously fabricated Bronco, “Big Oly.” Both Ekins and Jones will answer questions from the audience. Tickets for

The Baja Day Off-Road Show is Saturday, May 4, from 9:00a.m. to 4:00p.m. The off-road show is included in the daily museum admission

OKAY, SO WHAT’S NEW—I walked into California H-D on a mission. I needed jets and I needed them bad. Kip Woodring said, “How’s life?”

I said, “Bananas.”

“How do you mean?” Kip said. “What’s new?”

“About a million things,” I said. “All at once.”

“That’s refreshing,” Kip said. “I usually get, ‘same old crap.’”

I started to discuss some of the Bikernet projects, then grabbed the jets and peeled for the door. The list was too damn daunting to open in front of Kip, besides he was working. My tooth may smart, but the list of projects and new Bikernet content is growing. I will have a terrific bike feature put to bed over the weekend. It involves twisted frames, rescued children, and a repo man.

We are working on a tech around locking tie-down straps. These puppies will blow your mind. You can finally be secure when your precious bike is strapped onto an open trailer behind a hotel, in the middle of a Chicago suburb.

We now have a portion of a Campagna frame for our Assalt Weapon II streamlined trike project. We are waiting for Kent Riches to return from Thailand to discuss body and frame options. I’m not sure the Campagna will do the trick. It’s too wide. We need to build a bullet. Even belly tanks may be too wide, but the investigation is just beginning, and I’m studying the SCTA rulebook.

I’m going to put some miles on the Mudflap Girl FXR this weekend and search for more parts to fix our 1928 Shovelhead. A new Biker Radio show wants to interview me, and there was a call to roll north to the Hollister Rally, and or Laughlin. We need to finish Eric’s 106-inch build and dyno it, and I’m working with Metalsport on a tech about their wheel mounting service. You can order a set of wheels, and they will mount the tires, rotors and pulley, before shipping. Something happens every weekend. Make a good one.
