Frisco’d Shovel

All ofus guys have been there, you catch a glimpse out of the corner of your eye of abeautiful woman. Maybe it’s her red hair or blonde waves, maybe it’s her long shapely legs, maybe it’s her well defined breast or maybeit is her perfect contoured protruding ass. What starts as just a mere glance, overcomes you and you cannot resist taking in a full view from her head down toher toes, you’re mesmerized! The bike you see before you had that same effecton me. I caught a glimpse of it, out of the corner of your eye, and thebright sunshine yellow paint grabbed me, then the frisco’d frame lines, andfinally the details, such as the split rockers and trick exhaust! Like thatwell built lady, the lines of this brilliant Canary yellow classic chopsnatched my ass. I was hooked.

This bike is biker eyecandy at its best from its paint job to the flawless chrome. Ben Jordanthe owner of this pristine Shovel said he named the bike, “Pimpin Ain’tEasy” because he was going to pimp this one to the max, with paint andchrome and I think you will agree he achieved his goal.

Maybe some of you saw this bike in Sturgis? Benwas invited to participate in the Michael Lichter’s Sturgis tour for builderswho build for the love of choppers and custom bikes, not professional builders. Ben tells me this was a greathonor for him. He may not call himself a “Pro Builder” but letme tell you, I have known this guy for a number of years, and he builds aboutone or two bikes a year. All are top shelf! He even landed one of Mr. Bandit’sBest of Show trophies at the Run for Breath a few years back. His customcreations have been featured in national magazines, and he really does buildbecause he loves bikes and the lifestyle. Don’t tell anyone, but I am lettingthe secret out of the bag: this guy can hang with any PRO!

The first time I met Ben was at the Local Runfor Breath bike show. Ben entered his Sportster; it was a clean bike, blue withwhite flames and adorned with a set of apes. He won the Sportster class. Justfrom talking to Ben back then, I remember thinking this guy has talent. He hadthe eye for building bikes, and he was just getting started. From then on,every year, he would roll out some heavy iron, everything from Sportsters, to Evos and Pans, from long bikes tobobbers, all no nonsense bikes that screamed “LOOK AT ME!”[photo 11493

Ben is one cool customer when it comes tobuilding bikes and I always check in with him to see what he is up to.

“Whatever I rides, it has to be cool,” hetold me. This guy lays down some heavy metal fabrication, as far as bikesgo around the Charlotte area, and his bikes will compete with any in thecountry. So now after all my good words for Ben you might think he is the”star type.” Nothing could be farther from the truth; he is a veryhumble guy and in my opinion never brags on himself or his bikes, a real downto earth guy.[photo 11496

This bike is a template for building a superclean Shovelhead from its Paughco rigid frame, tothe BDL 3-inch belt drive to the jockey shift and suicide clutch, to thelittle stand out details like the shifter knob and its gas cap. Ben will be the first to tell you,”Pimpin’ Ain’t Easy.” It takes a lot of planning, thought, drive, and determination, and oh yeah, some talent.

The next time something catches thecorner of your eye like that beautiful woman walking by or that super cleankick-ass bike burning some asphalt, go ahead and take a long full look, youknow you will anyway, stop resisting, YOU ONLY LIVE ONCE!
