GOVERNMENT CONDEMNED SUNDAY POST

Wow,

I’m screwed up. For some reason I thought the Love Ride was behind us, when it’s a month away in November. New deal this year. We’re rolling the clocks back to a time when the Love Ride weaved a pack of Harleys from Glendale to Calamigos Ranch, in Malibu, California. The deal this year is 1000 riders at $100 a pop, so if you haven’t signed up, better get on the stick.

I’m building my mudflap girl, Spitfire frame (frisco’d FXR) H-D re-manned engine Evo, for my son next year. Maybe that’s the source of my crossed thinking formula. I thought about my son’s hot rod project for next year, so natch, the Love Ride had to be next year. I’m lost. So, I was thinking what am I going to ride. My regular ride is now a 1956 Shovelhead, if that makes any sense. It’s a rigid Paughco chopper and I love the 93-inch hot rod, but for distances, it’s wearing on my old frame. I don’t have any late model, or rubbermounted bikes, I was thinking in my whiskey clouded mind. Then I started cleaning the shop and discovered the best FXR in the world, the Salt Shaker. What a fuckin’ nut.

I built this bike in 2006 as the first sport bike Panhead, with a 120-inch Accurate Engineering Panhead, the John Reed V-Bike, Custom Chrome platform, and a Baker transmission. I have hip arthritis and I quit riding mid-control bikes, so I covered the Salt Shaker after we grabbed a World Land Speed Record at about 140 mph, at the Bub’s Bonneville meet. Fuck the arthritis, I’m riding this bastard to the Love Ride 2010. This monster is fine and deserves to be ridden.

BIKERNET BLACK MARKET WOLFGANG TECH BOOK OF THE WEEK– Don’t let yourself get intimidated by a wiring harness! Just buy yourself a copy of Motorcycle Wiring from Wolfgang Publications. Part of the Custom Builder Series, this new book uses chapters one and two to cover the basics of DC electricity; as well as batteries, starters and alternators. The next chapter provides detailed schematics and repair information on the factory wiring harness used before and after 1994.

Author Jeff Zielinski, owner of Namz Custom Cycle Products, uses over half the book to describe the various harness options available to a person building a custom bike. Is it better to build a harness from scratch or install a ready-made harness kit? And which kit is best for a
particular situation? What’s the easiest way to install the harness and route all those wires inside the top tube and the handle bars? These questions and many more are answered in this new Motorcycle Wiring book.

This entirely new Wiring book uses 144 pages and over 300 color photos and diagrams to illustrate all the latest products, the basic circuits, simple and complex wiring schematics, and a complete start-to-finish custom wiring installation. Price: $27.95

LESLIE PREVISH MOVE FROM H-D TO TREK WOMEN– You may have heard that I’m no longer with Harley-Davidson. I wanted to send you a note to let you know how much I enjoyed working with you during my 15 years in the motorcycle industry, and to provide you with my new contact information. I now work at Trek Bicycles as the Trek Women Brand Manager.

I’ve also included my favorite quote below that I have taped to my computer as a reminder to never settle for less. Maybe it will inspire you, as it has me.
Safe riding,

Trek Women Hires New Brand Manager, Launches Email Series And Stirs Up Facebook
Former Harley-Davidson Women’s Marketing Manager Makes Move from Motor to Pedal
(Waterloo, WI) – Trek Bicycles recently hired Trek Women Brand Manager Leslie Prevish to kick start the women’s strategy, marketing and community efforts to encourage more women to ride and be healthier on two wheels.
As part of the plan to rejuvenate the program, Prevish and the Trek Women team launched the Trek Women News monthly email series with inspirational stories, insider tips, and chances to win and learn about new Trek products: www.trekbikes.com/twemail . Stirring up the social media avenue, participation at www.facebook.com/trekwomen is accelerating and offers a place for bike-minded women to share their stories, photos and advice for others.
In her past role at Harley-Davidson Motor Company, Prevish led the marketing efforts to increase the number of women riding motorized two wheels, and she’s excited about the transition to pedals.

“My first weekend on the job I did the Trek Women Triathlon and couldn’t believe the empowering vibe,” said Prevish. “Then I tackled the Trek Dirt Series mountain bike camp and met so many amazing women. Newbies like me and experienced riders – all of us learning new skills and overcoming fears on the trails.”
Prevish is also working with Trek retailers to invite women to be fit and philanthropic on the 5th Annual Breast Cancer Awareness Ride on October 9th(www.trekbikes.com/women/awareness_ride ). All of the registration fees from the 10- or 25-mile rides go to the Breast Cancer Research Foundation. Last year, 100 retailers hosted events and raised $100,000. Trek Women’s goal for 2010 is $150,000.
Trek Women (www.trekbikes.com/trekwomen ) is a community of women cyclists united in a common love of riding. The Trek Women Triathlon Series (www.trekwomenstriathlonseries ) will host 20,000 female triathletes in 2010, and the Trek Dirt Series (www.dirtseries.com ) offers women’s and co-ed mountain biking camps. A GUIDE TO THE TECHNOLOGY FOR KEEPING GOVERNMENT ACCOUNTABLE–This summer the issue of recording on-duty police officers has received a great deal of media attention. Camera-wielding citizens were arrested in Maryland, Illinois, and Massachusetts under interpretations of state wiretapping laws, while others were arrested in New Hampshire, Ohio, Oregon, Florida, and elsewhere based on vague charges related to obstructing or interfering with a police officer.

So far Massachusetts is the only state to explicitly uphold a conviction for recording on-duty cops, and Illinois and Massachusetts are the only states where it is clearly illegal. The Illinois law has yet to be considered by the state’s Supreme Court, while the Massachusetts law has yet to be upheld by a federal appeals court. Maryland Attorney General Douglas Gansler recently issued an opinion concluding that arrests for recording cops are based on a misreading of the state’s wiretapping statute, but that opinion isn’t binding on local prosecutors.

In the remaining 47 states, the law is clearer: It is generally legal to record the police, as long as you don’t physically interfere with them. You may be unfairly harassed, questioned, or even arrested, but it’s unlikely you will be charged, much less convicted. (These are general observations and should not be treated as legal advice.)

One reason this issue has heated up recently is that the democratization of technology has made it easier than ever for just about anyone to pull out a camera and quickly document an encounter with police. So what’s the best way to record cops? Here is a quick rundown of the technology that’s out there.

Cameras without wireless networking capabilities are the least attractive option. If they are destroyed or confiscated, you have probably lost the damning video you just recorded, including the video documenting how your camera was confiscated or destroyed. But provided you can hold on to your camera, digital video recorders today are inexpensive, small, and wonderfully practical. The best-known everyday, easy-to-use brand right now is probably the Flip Video line, which start at $149. Even the cheapest Flips fit in your pocket, power up in about three seconds, and feature one-button recording. They are also easy to use. They include a built-in USB port and instant formatting for sites such as LiveLeak and YouTube.

Kodak has a pocket video camera for $100, and Amazon list a couple dozen different flash-memory cameras for under $50. Still too expensive? For $20, this camera sold at USBGeek is shorter than a stick of gum and shoots 640×480 video at 30 frames per second. It has a memory slot to hold up to 32GB of memory and a two-hour battery life. Or try this keychain camera. It’s tiny, has the advantage of not looking much like a camera, shoots 720×480 video at 30 frames per second, and sells for all of $12 (with free shipping) at Meritline.com.

Last year’s demonstrations in Iran and the 2009 police shooting of Oscar Grant on a subway platfom in Oakland, California were very public incidents, with dozens of cell phones taking photos and video as they happened. Authorities could not possibly have confiscated every phone camera (although in both cases they tried). But in other cases, police confiscate cameras, and when they are returned the potentially incriminating video or photos are gone. But technology is helping there too.

If you find your files or videos have been deleted once your camera has been returned, your best option is to look into recovery software, which in many cases can bring the deleted files back. Don’t use the phone or camera until you’ve tried the software.

The better option, though, is to use a camera with networking capabilities. We’re increasingly seeing spy movies-come-to-life cameras like this Bluetooth device from Looxcie, which you wear over your ear and lets you instantly email video, but the same technology is also standard now in most smart phones. The ability to store audio or video off site—to email it to friends (or yourself), or to upload it to social networking sites—is becoming more and more accessible. And it’s a pretty powerful check on government, as shown by the Iran demonstrations, the Grant shooting, and the alleged police abuses shown in hundreds of videos uploaded to video sharing sites.

Qik and UStream, two services available for both the iPhone and Android phones, allow instant online video streaming and archiving. Once you stop recording, the video is instantly saved online. Both services also allow you to send out a mass email or notice to your Twitter followers when you have posted a new video from your phone. Not only will your video of police misconduct be preserved, but so will the video of the police officer illegally confiscating your phone (assuming you continue recording until that point).

Neither Qik nor UStream market themselves for this purpose, and it probably would not make good business sense for them to do so, given the risk of angering law enforcement agencies and attracting attention from regulators. But it’s hard to overstate the power of streaming and off-site archiving. Prior to this technology, prosecutors and the courts nearly always deferred to the police narrative; now that narrative has to be consistent with independently recorded evidence. And as examples of police reports contradicted by video become increasingly common, a couple of things are likely to happen: Prosecutors and courts will be less inclined to uncritically accept police testimony, even in cases where there is no video, and bad cops will be deterred by the knowledge that their misconduct is apt to be recorded.

But there is still room for improvement. With both Qik and UStream, you can delete your uploaded videos from your phone, which means that if your phone is confiscated before you can turn it off (or if you keep your phone unlocked), whoever took it can get into your account and erase your evidence. One not terribly reliable way around this problem would be to encourage any of your friends or Twitter followers who happen to be online at the time to download your video the moment they get notice of it. But it would be far better if you had the option to make your videos deletable only once you’ve logged in from a computer. Another improvement would be the ability to “black out” the phone while it’s taking video, so it isn’t so obvious that you’re recording.

UStream and Qik are not likely to add either function, since both are beneficial only for people who want to make surreptitious recordings. But how about an ACLU or NAACP app designed specifically for recording police? The NAACP’s “All Alert” project encourages people to report incidents of police abuse through a toll-free phone number, text messages, or Twitter. But the process for registering a complaint is pretty cumbersome, and the program doesn’t allow instant streaming and archiving.

Scott Morgan of Flex Your Rights, which educates people about their rights during police encounters, says his organization has been exploring the possibility of offering such a service. “I think it’s a great idea,” Morgan says. “We’ve talked to a couple developers about it. I think the problem for a small group like us is getting server space for videos and working out the networking issues.” Globally, it would make great sense for an organization like Amnesty International or Human Rights Watch to develop a similar easy-to-use application, allowing people all over the world to emulate the instant documentation we saw during the protests in Iran.

The dizzying advancements in personal technology during the last decade have slipped a powerful government accountability tool into our pockets. But it happened mostly by accident. The technology was intended for other uses, and it still needs some fine tuning to work better as a protection against abuses of state power. It’s hard to think of a more worthy project for a civil liberties group.

FORMER ILLUSTRATOR FOR EASYRIDERS AND BIKERNET ESCAPES TO THAILAND– I had been spending a couple two years in serious depression. I broke out of it
(Thanks to the VA), my dreams of a bona fide retirement led me to Thailand.

With the the current Mexico situation, I had to opt out. Thailand is, to me, a paradise and general haven. I traveled here many times prior to my final move.

I am currently buying a small and new hotel that caters to westerners (farangs).

It has a generally good occupancy for the payment. But hell, I can afford it if it was empty. lol Should you be up to a visit this way; the place is yours old friend, as long as you wish to visit. I am just about to finish a started pavillion for a small bar and USA type of grill. Again! you folks are always welcome.

BIKERNET UNIVERSITY ENGLISH DEPARTMENT WORD OF THE DAY–
Today’s word was submitted by Miranda H.

mussitate MUHS-i-teyt, verb:
To silently move the lips in simulation of audible speech.

“Oh, Anu, I never thought to see you again,” he mussitates. (I have appeared to him in my original form.)
— Dan Wick, The Devil’s Tale

Mussitate comes from the Latin mussitare, “speak indistinctly.” Mutter shares the same roots.

AIRCRAFT CRASH– Oh, the humanity!
Brace yourself before looking at the attached image. A pilot at low level has no control over his aircraft. It narrowly misses a crowd gathered for the airshow and slams into four buildings. One can only imagine the horror of the occupants inside those buildings.

WHY THERE IS NO JOB GROWTH IN AMERICA– I’d like to make you a business offer. Seriously. This is a real offer. In fact, you really can’t turn me down, as you’ll come to understand in a moment…

Here’s the deal. You’re going to start a business or expand the one you’ve got now. It doesn’t really matter what you do or what you’re going to do. I’ll partner with you no matter what business you’re in – as long as it’s legal. But I can’t give you any capital – you have to come up with that on your own. I won’t give you any labor – that’s definitely up to you. What I will do, however, is demand you follow all sorts of rules about what products and services you can offer, how much (and how often) you pay your employees, and where and when you’re allowed to operate your business. That’s my role in the affair: to tell you what to do.

Now in return for my rules, I’m going to take roughly half of whatever you make in the business each year. Half seems fair, doesn’t it? I think so. Of course, that’s half of your profits. You’re also going to have to pay me about 12% of whatever you decide to pay your employees because you’ve got to cover my expenses for promulgating all of the rules about who you can employ, when, where, and how. Come on, you’re my partner. It’s only “fair.”

That’s the offer America gives its entrepreneurs. And the idiots in Washington wonder why there are no new jobs…

THE NEW E-TYPE JAGUAR–  for the 21st Century: 205mph electric hybrid supercar from Jaguar that costs £200,000

A sexy new 205mph Jaguar supercar that blends sporting looks and performance with the latest ‘green’ technology is set to rock the prestigious Paris Motor Show when it is officially unveiled today.

The new two-seater Jaguar C-X75 is a £200,000 electric hybrid vehicle uses hi-tech jet-turbine know-how from the aviation industry to sprint from rest to 62 mph in just 3.5 seconds and up to 100mph in just 5.5 seconds.

It was already being dubbed last night ‘The E-Type for the 21st Century’ and is set to be pored over by a Government minister on a trade mission to the Paris show today.

The new Jaguar dispenses with a conventional internal combustion engine.

Instead, powered by a lithium ion battery charged from the domestic mains, the new Jaguar can run with zero-emissions for up to 68 miles on four electric motors – one of which drives each of four wheels.

SALMON ARM RESIDENT PROPOSES STURGIS NORTH–Ray Sasserville and his business partner Steve Hammer have a plan to fill the streets of Salmon Arm, BC with motorcycle enthusiasts next July. They’re planning a 4 day event called the Sturgis North motorcycle rally and music festival, based of course on the popular 70-year-old Sturgis motorcycle rally in South Dakota. In trying to convince Salmon Arm’s town council to give his proposed event a noise bylaw extension, Sasserville said he’s found that those who attend Sturgis tend to be cash laden consumers in the over 35 demographic. He figures he can lure at least 10,000 of them, from as far away as Germany and Japan, to empty their wallets on Salmon Arm’s streets next summer. In response to council’s concerns of certain undesirables attending, Sasserville proposed implementing the same no patch bylaw that generally keeps outlaw bikers away from the US rally.

Though Sasserville claims to have already booked the local fairgrounds for the inaugural event next summer, Salmon Arm Fall Fair Society chair Phil Wright told the local newspaper that nothing has been booked yet and that things are in very preliminary stages.

OFFICIAL BAND OF ILLUSION CYCLES–  Attika 7 , a brand new band featuring former Static-X bassist Tony Campos — who is also the touring bassist for Prong — began as a seed of an idea in the brain of guitarist Rusty Coones, a Hells Angel and custom motorcycle maker who began writing songs for the band’s debut while he was in prison. Additionally, Pennywise’s Fletcher Dragge co-wrote songs with Attika 7. It’s clear that this project is as unconventional as it gets, from its inception through its execution.

The music is dark and doomy, as influenced by the sludge-caked riffs of Pantera as it is the industrial crunch of White Zombie, with a dose of whiskey-drenched vocals. “The first couple of years of being incarcerated in federal prison were probably the most dismal point of my life,” Coones told Noisecreep.

More About Attika 7 on AOL Music, and check Bikernet Special Reports next week for a full story.

BARTEL’S SPORTSTER LINE-UP– Here is a rundown of the Sportster models we
have. New for 2011 is the 883 super low, it has a seat height of 25.5 inches, it also has a 4.5 gallon fuel tank, this would be ideal for a shorter rider. There is also the 883 iron, seat height is the same, however this has a little more aggressive styling. Flat black paint and a black motor, it also comes in a flat silver, and boasts a 3.3 gallon tank. For the 1200 hundreds we have the low, and the nightster. The low has a 26.3 inch seat height, and has a 4.5 gallon tank.

The nightster is a popular model due to an aggressive look. Also for this year is the 48, it is a 1200 model and looks super cool. The only draw back is it only has a 2 gallon peanut tank on it. I have a super low right now that I would be able to make a killer deal on, Debi said to take care of you, so If you happen to make it down here ill be more than happy to help you out. The super low starts out between 7999 and 8499, there are a couple other fees like California emissions, security options and freight and set up. Those are all fees that I will go through with you. Definitely check these models out online!

Brancaccio Wins AMRA 2010 Top Fuel Championship– Nutley, NJ: Nutley, NJ’s native son and Harley-Davidson Top Fuel drag racer, Larry “Drums” Brancaccio has been notified that he is the AMRA (American Motorcycle Racing Assoc) Top Fuel Champion. He will receive his Championship award at Bowling Green, KY, Nov. 13th.

Sanction owners Jane & Marty Vandenheuvel called Brancaccio after the season’s points were tallied, Brancaccio was at the top of the national competitors in Top Fuel, the unlimited displacement nitromethane burning class.

Brancaccio, 52 yrs old and competing on nitro bikes for over 30 years, has ridden 2 nitro powered race bikes this season, but he was riding DJ Johnson’s 186 cid, 14 inch rear tire, 1,000 horsepower Harley Davidson at AMRA Bowling Green National Finals to clinch the Top Fuel Championship.

Brancaccio and Johnson had been ultra tuning the Top Fuel motorcycle dragster for 4 weekends, testing new gear combinations, clutch set ups and new timing techniques. It was with Johnson that Brancaccio turned one of the world’s quickest Top Fuel times with a 6.26 ET at 226.47 miles per hour in the ¼ mile in a test session at Atco, NJ. Although a test session time is not good for the world record, it does show the power in the Johnson built and tuned hot rod Harley and certainly proves the riding ability of Brancaccio.

The next event for these New Jersey horsepower creating men will be at the AHDRA Jim McClure National Finals in Rockingham, NC, Oct. 8-11. However, this time they’ll be on opposite side of the timing lights as Brancaccio will be riding his own bike and Takeshi Shigematsu will make the long flight from Japan to ride for Johnson.
The increasing international attention and attendance continues to make Harley Davidson drag racing a sport to watch.

The first blonde guy joke?–And well worth the wait!
An Irishman, a Mexican and a Blonde Guy were doing construction work on scaffolding on the 20th floor of a building.
They were eating lunch and the Irishman said, ‘Corned beef and cabbage! If I get corned beef and cabbage one more time for lunch, I’m going to jump off this building.’
The Mexican opened his lunch box and exclaimed, ‘Burritos again! If I get burritos one more time I’m going to jump off, too.’
The blonde opened his lunch and said, ‘ Bologna again! If I get a bologna sandwich one more time, I’m jumping too..’
The next day, the Irishman opened his lunch box, saw corned beef and cabbage, and jumped to his death.
The Mexican opened his lunch, saw a burrito, and jumped, too.
The blonde guy opened his lunch, saw the bologna and jumped to his death as well.
At the funeral, the Irishman’s wife was weeping. She said, ‘If I’d known how really tired he was of corned beef and cabbage, I never would have given it to him again!’
The Mexican’s wife also wept and said, ‘I could have given him tacos or enchiladas! I didn’t realize he hated burritos so much.’
Everyone turned and stared at the blonde’s wife. The blonde’s wife said,

‘Don’t look at me. The idiot makes his own lunch.’

BIKERNET OFFICIAL Travel Alert U.S. DEPARTMENT OF STATE
Bureau of Consular Affairs, Europe–
The State Department alerts U.S. citizens to the potential for terrorist attacks in Europe. Current information suggests that al-Qa’ida and affiliated organizations continue to plan terrorist attacks. European governments have taken action to guard against a terrorist attack and some have spoken publicly about the heightened threat conditions.

Terrorists may elect to use a variety of means and weapons and target both official and private interests. U.S. citizens are reminded of the potential for terrorists to attack public transportation systems and other tourist infrastructure. Terrorists have targeted and attacked subway and rail systems, as well as aviation and maritime services. U.S. citizens should take every precaution to be aware of their surroundings and to adopt appropriate safety measures to protect themselves when traveling.

We continue to work closely with our European allies on the threat from international terrorism, including al-Qa’ida. Information is routinely shared between the U.S. and our key partners in order to disrupt terrorist plotting, identify and take action against potential operatives, and strengthen our defenses against potential threats.

We recommend U.S. citizens register their travel plans with the Consular Section of the U.S. Embassy through the State Department’s travel registration website. Travelers may obtain up-to-date information on security conditions by calling 1-888-407-4747 toll-free in the U.S. and Canada, or on a regular toll line at 1-202-501-4444 from elsewhere in the world.

This Travel Alert expires on January 31, 2011.

GOOD GOD, CAN WE CATCH A BREAK?–It’s time to party. Tomorrow I will meet with the director of the Biker Build-Off series. I’ll post the Storz Performance XR1200 feature and work on 1%er book chapters. In 1974 five members were arrested in Albuquerque, NM for murder. By the middle of 1975 they were convicted and lead to death row. Incredible story.

We will publish another segment on the Brass Balls/HORSE/Bikernet subscription sweepstakes bike. Friday, the Soto construction boss came over and we completed a Zipper ECM install, easy. Then we replaced his air cleaner with a Performance Machine Wrath, highflow job, nothing to it. And finally we installed a Bub 2-into-1 exhaust system. I haven’t seen him since.
I may fire the 5-Ball factory racer and test ride it after replacing the Thunderheart ignition. Gard, at LA Choprods, has a lot of experience with these engines. He recommends doing away with the Thunderheart systems and replacing them with a standard cone, so we can run any Evo system, like Compu-Fire.

I will also attempt a test ride with the Salt Shaker. I need to replace the starter ring gear on the clutch basket. We snapped off a tooth while tuning it for the salt flats.

There’s never a dull moment around here. I’m not even scratching the surface, but Sin Wu, Nyla, and Coral, all look at me like I’m nuts. They offer sex, drugs, Sunday Night Football, and whiskey. “Take a break,” Coral whispers, “goddamnit.”

Ride forever,

–Bandit
