It was an action-packed weekend with a party at the Bikernet Interplanetary Headquarters, with builders and movers and shakers from our industry, plus a couple of TV producers.
It’s all nuts, but good. So much is happening and the mantra for next year is to slow down, focus on book writing, Bikernet, and one super special Bonneville project build. But everyday a new opportunity springs to the surface.

BIKERNET GUN NUT REPORT–Federal Court Strikes down Illinois’ total ban on carrying firearms for self-defense outside the home or business.
The United States Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit ruled today that Illinois’ total ban on carrying firearms for self-defense outside the home or business is unconstitutional. The case involves lead plaintiff Mary Shepard, an Illinois resident and a trained gun owner, who is licensed to carry a concealed handgun in both Utah and Florida. The National Rifle Association is funding this case. The Illinois State Rifle Association is a co-plaintiff in this case.
Today’s ruling is a victory for all law abiding citizens in Illinois and gun owners throughout the country, said Wayne LaPierre, Executive Vice President of NRA. The court recognized that the text and history of the Second Amendment guarantee individuals the right to carry firearms outside the home for self-defense and other lawful purposes. In light of this ruling, Mary Shepard and the people of Illinois will finally be able to exercise their Second Amendment rights.
On September 28, 2009, while working as the treasurer of her church, Ms. Shepard and an 83-year-old co-worker were viciously attacked and beaten by a six-foot-three-inch, 245 pound man with a violent past and a criminal record. Ms. Shepard and her co-worker were lucky to survive, as each of them suffered major injuries to the head, neck and upper body. Ms. Shepard’s injuries required extensive surgeries and she continues physical therapy to this day attempting to recover from her injuries.
In today’s decision, Judge Richard Posner ruled that Illinois’ ban on carriage is unconstitutional. The Judge went on to say, “One doesn’t have to be a historian to realize that a right to keep and bear arms for personal self-defense in the eighteenth century could not rationally have been limited to the home. . . . Twenty-first century Illinois has no hostile Indians. But a Chicagoan is a good deal more likely to be attacked on a sidewalk than in his apartment on the 35th floor.”
“Today’s ruling is a major victory for law-abiding Illinoisans and for everyone who understands that the Second Amendment protects the right both to keep arms, and to bear arms,” added Chris W. Cox, executive director of NRA’s Institute for Legislative Action. “This ruling makes clear that Illinois cannot deny law-abiding residents the right to carry a firearm for self-defense outside the home. This is a step in the right direction for all gun owners. We know it probably won’t be the end of this case, and we’re ready to keep fighting until the courts fully protect the entire Second Amendment.”

RUSTY ON SONS OF ANARCHY–Biker’s ‘Sons of Anarchy’ appearance isn’t an act—By Susan Carpenter

Rusty Coones has lived what could easily be a “Sons of Anarchy” plot line.
A tower of a man with tattooed arms jutting from his sides like turrets, Coones is a longstanding Hells Angel and bike builder who owns Illusion Motorsports in Westminster – a custom shop that specializes in burly black bikes that would be right at home on the hit FX show that re-imagines “Hamlet” with a gun-running motorcycle club doling out eye-for-an-eye justice in a small California town.
With recent appearances on “Sons of Anarchy” and bikes he’s built for the show’s creator, Coones blurs the line between reality and fiction. In two episodes leading up to Tuesday’s grisly season finale, Coones played Quinn, president of a Sons of Anarchy Nomads charter, riding one of his own Illusion customs. Coones says he’ll be back on “Sons” next season in the role that has him playing himself, essentially. In real life, he was president of the Angels’ San Fernando Valley and Orange County chapters.
It’s well-known that “Sons of Anarchy” creator and executive producer Kurt Sutter regularly consults with the Hells Angels to ensure the show’s authenticity. Coones first met Sutter when show creator and lead actor Charlie Hunnam came to an open house at the Illusion shop in 2008, after which he was asked to build a custom bike that was featured in the DVD extras for the show’s third season and later auctioned for charity.
Sutter then commissioned an Illusion bike of his own: A Hellrazor that is, like all Illusion customs, black, with chromed parts that appear to have been shot through with bullets.
Sutter’s involvement with Coones didn’t stop there. Sutter featured three songs from Coones’ rock-metal band Attika 7 in the FX show and eventually cast the 6-foot, 5-inch bike builder to appear on screen.
Coones has been in prison twice – first for drugs and guns and later for conspiracy to distribute an illicit chemical used to make methamphetamine. A central California native, he bought Illusion Motorsports in 1999 but was arrested on a drug-conspiracy charge a few months later. While he was in federal prison, his wife Katherine ran the business “so Rusty would come home to a purpose,” she said.
After almost six years of “bad food, bad company and a bad time,” Coones said, he came home to the purpose of his shop, only to ride head on into the worst economy in decades.
“Right when I got back, I had all these high hopes of resurrecting Illusion. I thought we could get a dealer network going. And every step of the way we ran into problems because everything was collapsing as we were trying to come up,” said Coones, who, like his bikes, is clad entirely in black.
“Sons of Anarchy,” it seems, came along at just the right time.
“This whole ‘Sons of Anarchy’ connection is a plus for anybody,” said Coones, who is working on four different bike projects, including an $80,000 Hellrazor bagger that tips the scales at 850 pounds and is distinguished by an enormous 26-inch front wheel. Coones is also in the earliest stages of developing his own reality TV program.
“Any time you’re associated with a show with over 5 million viewers, it will legitimize you – even when you’re somebody like me who’s been in prison several times and happens to be a Hells Angel.”

MARKET REPORT FROM THE MIC– Attached is the latest MIC Flash Report for overall motorcycle sales… figure Harley has historically had 60% of the On-Highway sales total as a starting point.
Unfortunately MIC only tracks new unit sales do they only offer a guesstimate of used motorcycles sold at the dealership level. To get a better handle on how many used Harleys are sold, I would start with the folks at National Powersport Auctions who have a pretty good handle on the used market (more than 70% of motorcycle sales in the U.S. are still driveway-to-driveway rather than through a franchised dealership or legit used shop). There are an estimated 8.8 million motorcycles in use on the street (with another 3.3 million off-highway motorcycles in use).
Speaking of dealership transactions, MIC says 41% are franchised dealers 59% are service/accessory/aftermarket shops. Sales by the franchised new vehicle retailers accounted for $10 Billion in total sales volume, non-aligned accessory shops generated an additional $1.3 billion (total value of the U.S. motorcycle market is roughly $11.4 billion).
Of this $11.4 billion total, $6.5 billion/58% of the total was generated by the sale of new motorcycles, the rest was generated by parts/accessories/apparel ($2.5 billion/21.7% of the total). Service/labor generates right around $800 million (7%). “Other” motorcycle related sales account for a little more than $200 million (1.8%).
Check Harley’s 10k report for how much money MotorClothes and Genuine Parts generate and add the Indian/Victory PG&A numbers in and you will have a rough idea of the scope of the V-Twin OEM accessory sales. They have all this detailed in their annual stock market reports and it is public information… I just don’t know where my copies are.
The bad news is that Bikers Choice and Drag Specialties are not so forthcoming in how much aftermarket revenue they are generating. And again, MIC doesn’t track aftermarket accessory sales well enough to hazard a guess

UNCLE MONKEY OPENS THE DOOMSDAY CALENDAR–If you are reading this there is a good chance the world hasn’t ended yet. If you are not reading this then there is a good possibility that you live in the aftermath of hurricane Sandy and your world will never be the same again.
I’m not a doom sawyer and don’t believe the world is going to come to mystical end within the waning moments of this year. I’m old enough to have survived Y2K. But that doesn’t mean natural disasters don’t happen even to the most advance, greatest country in the world (according to Mericans).
I think for the most part we are resilient and can overcome pretty much anything that this world has to throw at us but it will be messy. Mankind has rolled with the punches year after year, century after century dealing with volcanoes, earthquakes, flooding/tsunamis, hurricanes and tornadoes.
Today I feel the biggest threat to our lives is the loss of the electrical grid. Many people shrug at the idea but for someone like me living in Canada the lost of power for several days during the winter can mean death. A local blackout a while ago had people simply bunking down with family and friends who weren’t affected, but what if it was widespread, a whole continent plunged into darkness.
Diesel generators can only run so long before they have to be refuelled, gas pumps wouldn’t work, the massive pumps that distribute the fuel across this nation would be quiet. We rely on power to keep our food cold; we rely on power to run the irrigation systems that transformed the deserts of California to massive growing gardens feeding the world.
Power keeps water to our faucets, keeps it clean. We would be devastated; the current world’s population can simply not be sustained on natural growing, hand harvested food supplies. Chaos would be rampant. Don’t believe me? Throw someone’s cell phone across the room and see the panic in their eyes. We are only years away from all our books, all our knowledge being digital.
Without power we would be a lost civilization. Our decedents will roll their eyes at the thought that we walked on the moon, explored Mars, with what, a slide ruler? The thought will be bewildering.
While I hope that our power grid is stable and secure the most likely threat to our way of life is good old Mother Nature.
We are animals, nothing more, and we are overpopulating this world past what she can handle. Nature seeks a balance. It always will. Epidemic plagues have kept the world’s population in check; even natural selection did its part up until the ‘70s.
The village shed a tear when Bubba died sticking his head in the thrashing machine but it meant someone stupid enough to stick his head into a moving machine wouldn’t be reproducing dumber kids. Today we have a wronged sense that we need to save everyone, to protect everyone from themselves. Mother Nature will only put up with that bullshit for so long before a new plague will wipe out the majority of the population.
So as I gather with my family and friends this holiday season, I hope the furnace will keep us warm and someone too stupid to live no longer does. That a tsunami doesn’t sweep my west coast friends into the ocean, that my east coast friends realize that life really is survival of the fittest. Because in the end you only have family and friends to get you through when the government, including Fema has let you down.

THE RFR TEXAS REVIEW–Me I must be getting old, I came across a young lady that was doing a behind the scene video of her latest video on a photography site and have become a big fan! She plays a violin but with attitude! Her name is Lindsey Stirling (she is a cutie too).
This was the second year in a row I exhibited my abstract art derived from custom paint reversed under glass, and the first year for inviting the crème de la crème of motorcycle lifestyle painters.
I think the square art world refers to these guys style as photo realism. Anyways it was just unbelievable how detailed and distinctive each painters work was. The list included Jack Knight, Eric Hermann, David Uhl, and Tom Fritz. Long time Easyriders associate editor, and In the Wind editor Kim Peterson broke out a proverbial crapper full of really great photos he took of David Mann and friends throughout the years.

We are keen visitors to various winter meeting. This year we want to organize one ourselves. The date is chosen because on the first weekend in February there are a lot of winter meetings. The biggest and most famous Elefantentreffen and the Tauerntreffen which have become quite big in the last few years.
On this weekend we want to go the extra mile and offer a Ural meeting for winter drivers, an alternative for those who are looking for something different. Without big organization, without big effort, without big hoopla from our side. The tavern has a wonderful friendly atmosphere. In the castle ruin of Prandegg there is always snow at the beginning of February and a guarantee of cold conditions. Within the grounds of Prandegg there are good places for camping, we can also sleep on the galleria in the dining area of the tavern. In the surroundings area of Prandegg there are also cheap rooms.
We will definitely have a heavy winter tour of the area. We know all the hidden lanes and tracks in the area. There is not a single flat place in the whole region, there are piles of natural adventures at our disposal. For sidecars without sidecar drive it is better not even to start the engine.
Of course every sidecar driver is welcome, we do not want Ural and Dnepr exclusively. Visitors with solo bikes are also welcome, maybe we can convince one a few disbelieving heroic solo riders to become a sidecar driver. For visitors from far, very far away, who arrive with trailer, we recommend to hide the trailer in the village Pregarten. The landscape of the last 22 km ride to the castle is really very attractive.
Saturday morning between 10 and 11 we will dare to start our tour. The route of the tour will be determined 5 min. before the start and depends on the number of participants, the weather and above all the snow condition. Our plan is a really mean drudgery for man and machine. It would be fun to end the tour through the snow with a complete contrast by visiting a wellness spa in the village Bad Zell which is nearby . It will be a great sight if the snowy entrance of the spa is full of sidecars and the wardrobe is full of clothes of the sidecar drivers.
2 kilometers away from the meeting place in Pehersdorf 18, it is the farmhouse of Josef Kriechbaumer, known as Uncle Peter. A great farmhouse with horses. The room per person per night incl. breakfast is EUR 24,00. there are also communal bunks for EUR 16,00 per person per night incl. breakfast. Please book the room yourself if you need one.

BIKERNET WEEKLY SHOP SAFTEY AWARD–How One Indiana Manufacture Took Action To Create A Safer Work Environment. Bremen Castings Implements Near-Miss Reports To Aid in Safety Procedures
Foundries and machine shops can be dangerous places. You’re dealing with hot molten metal and large machines and that can sometimes lead to an accident, but one Indiana foundry has changed the focus of their business to a model of shared responsibility. President JB Brown notes, “Instead of seeing a potential accident and ignoring it or stepping over an obstruction, we wanted our employees to take responsibility for everyone, including themselves.” As a result, Bremen Castings, Inc. implemented the near-miss accident reports.
This report is filed every time there is a near-miss or potential accident. This could qualify as anything ranging from a puddle of water to stepping over a wire or cable which could cause tripping. The report is filed by any employee who encounters an obstacle or potential accident. The report is then emailed to entire management and safety committee then reviewed by the safety team and discussed issues like that could be avoided in the future. Brown notes, “I think the near miss reports have had a big impact on the shift from individual responsibility to shared responsibility of the foundry and machine shop. We have had over 561 days and over 850,000 hours of zero lost time filings and the near-miss reports attribute to that milestone.”

Robert and Susan Shingler, of Summerfield, S.C. recently bought the 4 millionth motorcycle have toured the factory to see the processes and met the people who made their midnight pearl Road Glide Ultra motorcycle.

Speaking of a fun packed week end at the I M S event in Long Beach and we survived intact. Spent 3 days on my feet shakin hands and kissin babies. Your Bikernet 5-Ball Racing Team rolled into the Long Beach show late last Thursday afternoon after a mad scramble to finish our Turbo-Charged Raycer. The fresh pin striping by George the Wild Brush was blow drying on the way to the show.
The show results are in, our 5-Ball Racing Teams, Turbo-Charged Raycer placed 2nd out of 10 bikes entered in the Competition class. Very pleased with results as the frame is not detailed yet, after a few road miles we’ll tear it down to the frame and rebuild with fresh polish, metal treatments and a powdered coated frame.

Yesterday afternoon spent the day at Bennett’s Performance in Long Beach, just 5 miles from home in the industrial area called Wilmington. When we fired the hot rod in Morgan Hill a couple of weeks ago the rear cylinder had zero compression?
After removing the rear head this afternoon the men at Branch/O’Keefe discovered a perfectly sealed set of valves? Branch is connected by a common wall with Bennett’s. We walked next door to and scoped out the rocker box! BINGO, the valve collar on the intake was touching the rib in the cover just enough to keep the valve slightly open.
We now have compression, fire and fuel.

Man sentenced for stealing cremains OCALA — A Central Florida man accused of stealing and snorting the cremated remains of a man and two dogs has been sentenced to more than eight years in prison for a string of burglaries. Authorities say Jose David Diaz-Marrero and two other men stole the urns containing Holli Tencza’s father and two Great Danes in 2010, along with jewelry and electronics.??Detectives said the men told investigators that they thought the urns contained crushed pills. They realized they were wrong when they saw an article about the theft published in the Ocala Star-Banner . Diaz-Marrero pleaded guilty in June to four burglaries, including the one at Tencza’s home. The Star-Banner reports that Diaz-Marrero apologized in court Friday. One of the other men has been sentenced to nine years in prison.

AMAZING—Life is amazing in so many respects. We just need to slow down, forget the pursuit of money and take a ride or go fishing.
We have so many positive pursuits exploding in the Bikernet Matrix. This pixel pupply allows us to work with contributors all over the world. Udey in India is working with Michael Lichter and I to take a tour of the Royal Enfield plant, then maybe at a later date ride to the Base camp at Mt. Everest.
Another old friend wants to work with us to produce a poker tournament charity with the Bicycle Club Casino to help the folks hit hardest by Hurricane Sandy.
