Hey,
What a day yesterday was. I worked feverishly on Rogue’s JIMS cam bearing tech. I needed to work on a program for the MRF’s Industry Council for Motorcycling. Then Tobey arrived and started on US Chopper flat track tank manufacturing.
I couldn’t stand it and dove into the shop. I needed to install the Centramatic wheel balancers for a test, then new Spitfire girder trees. For the first time I’m seriously studying suspension options from Progressive shocks with various spring rates, to the girder shock, the rubber mounting system, and now wheel balancers and tighter girder action.
So, I had to completely dissemble the Spitfire Girder. Everything was cool until I pulled the last link off the girder. The rear wheel was already removed. The jack under the frame was slippery with oil, and didn’t hold the chassis. It slid off and sat down on the lift, while I stood their holding the girder. Surprise, surprise.
I faced a turning point. Should I coat the rusty frame with a rust inhibiter, or keep going and tear the entire bike down for powder coating. With Tobey’s input we decided on a complete teardown. Hang on.

BIKERNET 5-BALL RACING SPONSORSHIP PACKAGES—We are finalizing our 2012 5-Ball Racing packages to our supportive sponsors. Here’s the letter: Thank you for supporting the 5-Ball Racing Team in 2012. We hurdled over many obstacles and stumbled into some. Our 1940 Bonne Belle effort which contained a flathead 45 engine with a K-model top end, Sportster lower end, 5-speed Evo transmission, in a special—built Paughco frame ran like a top under the tutelage of Lee Clemens of Departure Bike works.
The bike functioned admirably, past on-the-salt inspection, and made several gallant passes, but we did not set a record. But now know we can set two achievable records with some tuning and gearing changes. The Bonne Belle will be back.
Ray C. Wheeler spent most of last year building the most dynamic land speed racer, the 5-Ball 124-inch, turbo-charged, twin-cam Raycer. He couldn’t finish it in time for Bubs, with his all-custom Hyabusa suspension, salt and street racer. This bike is destined to be cemented in the record books beginning in 2013.
We have one more exciting historic project to consider as we roll into 2013. Everything we do is documented on Bikernet, weekly in the news, and monthly in tech articles. We appreciate all you have done for us, and don’t ever hesitate to reach out, if we can reciprocate.
Fast and Fun Forever,

CUSTOM MOTORCYCLES FROM THE GRAND NATIONAL ROADSTER SHOW IN POMONA– Here are all the bikes I shot at the show. You can use them in a show report if you like.
Some I have enough connections to set up a photo shoot, but you tell me what you like, and I will see what I can do.
The only bikes I did not shoot were the choppers with 4 cyl Honda engines.

FEINSTEIN INTRODUCES MASSIVE SEMI-AUTO FIREARM AND MAGAZINE BAN BILL–On Jan. 24, Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.) introduced S. 150, her long-anticipated bill to ban “assault weapons” and “large” magazines. Contrary to media claims that Feinstein wants to “reinstate” the 1994 ban, the bill will go much further toward her stated long-term goal of gun confiscation, imposing a host of absurdly broad definitions and onerous restrictions:
• Ban the sale, transfer, manufacture or importation of 157 named firearms. Presumably, these were chosen by looking at pictures, as Sen. Feinstein has said she did before introducing her first legislation on the issue in 1993.
• Ban all semi-automatic rifles that can accept a detachable magazine. This is because the bill would ban any semi-automatic detachable-magazine rifle that has even one “feature,” particularly a pistol grip—which is defined to include any “characteristic that can function as a grip.” Other features that would cause a rifle to be banned include a forward grip; folding, telescoping, or detachable stock; grenade launcher or (as an absurd propaganda move) rocket launcher; barrel shroud; or a threaded barrel.
• Ban all detachable-magazine semi-auto pistols that have any of the following: a threaded barrel, second pistol grip, or magazine that mounts anywhere other than the grip. The bill would also ban any handgun that is a semi-automatic version of a fully automatic handgun.
• Ban all semi-automatic rifles and handguns that have fixed magazines that accept more then 10 rounds.
• Ban all semi-automatic shotguns that have just one of the following: a folding, telescoping, or detachable stock; a pistol grip; a fixed magazine that can accept more than five rounds, a detachable magazine; a forward grip; a revolving cylinder; or a grenade or rocket launcher. As with the rifle provision, this could potentially ban any semi-auto shotgun, because all of them have “characteristics that can function as a grip.” And of course, countless Americans have pistol-grip shotguns for home defense.
• Ban all belt-fed semi-automatic firearms, such as semi-auto replicas of historic machine guns.
• Ban all frames or receivers of banned guns, even though in many cases they are identical to the frames and receivers of guns that would not be banned.
• Ban “combinations of parts” from which “assault weapons” can be assembled. Read broadly, this could ban the acquisition of a single spare part that could be combined with parts you already own.
• Ban any “part, combination of parts, component, device, attachment, or accessory that is designed or functions to accelerate the rate of fire of a semiautomatic rifle”–a vague definition that could ban items such as competition trigger parts.
• Ban the sale or transfer of all ammunition feeding devices that hold more than ten rounds. Even those lawfully possessed before passage of the bill could never be transferred, even to your heirs through a will.
Though not requiring registration of currently owned firearms under the National Firearms Act (as Feinstein threatened in December), the new bill would go far beyond the failed 1994 semi-auto ban by requiring background checks on the private transfer of any “grandfathered” firearm.
Finally, unlike the 1994 ban, the new bill will not include an automatic “sunset” clause, so it would remain in effect unless repealed.
In announcing the bill, Feinstein misrepresented the effectiveness of past semi-auto bans. For example, she claimed that Maryland’s “assault pistol” ban had reduced crime. But in Maryland, the murder trend after the state passed its ban on so-called “assault pistols” was far worse than in the rest of the country. Similarly, in California, during the first five years after passage of the state’s 1989 “assault weapon” ban, the state’s murder rate increased 26 percent, compared to an 11 percent increase in the rest of the country. During the first five years after California expanded the ban starting in 2000, the state’s murder rate increased 10 percent, compared to a six percent decrease in the rest of country.
Feinstein also misrepresented the findings of a congressionally mandated study completed by Jeffrey Roth and Christopher Koper for the Urban Institute.
In the handouts provided by her office, Feinstein claimed the report said “Assault weapons are disproportionately involved in murders with multiple victims, multiple wounds per victim, and police officers as victims.” But here’s what the report really found:
“Some of our own analyses added evidence that assault weapons are disproportionately involved in murders with multiple victims, multiple wounds per victim, and police officers as victims” (emphasis added), but “We were unable to detect any reduction to date in two types of gun murders that are thought to be closely associated with assault weapons, those with multiple victims in a single incident and those producing multiple bullet wounds per victim. We did find a reduction in killings of police officers since mid-1995. However, the available data are partial and preliminary, and the trends may have been influenced by law enforcement agency policies regarding bullet-proof vests.”
The misuse and misinterpretation of study findings has become a common tactic of anti-gun politicians because they know that the 1994 ban had no real impact on crime. In one of the frequent moments of candor that make his allies cringe, Vice-President Biden admitted as much in an online forum Jan. 24, saying, “[I]t is true that the vast majority of gun deaths in America are not a consequence of the use of an assault weapon” and that a ban “is not an answer to all the problems.” Nonetheless, Biden claimed the ban is a “rational limitation” because in his opinion, people concerned about self-defense should just use double-barreled shotguns anyway.
Despite advice like this, Americans have voted with their pocketbooks, buying about 50 million semi-automatic firearms–including nearly 4 million AR-15 rifles–since 1991. And, since the Supreme Court said in District of Columbia v. Heller that a handgun ban was unconstitutional in part because “handguns are the most popular weapon chosen by Americans for self-defense in the home,” popular rifles should be just as firmly protected.

Statement from Chris W. Cox Regarding “Universal” Background Checks
An article appearing on TheHill.com yesterday asserted that Sen. Joe Manchin (D-W.V.) is working on a bill with the NRA that would implement universal background checks.
NRA does NOT support universal background checks and is not working with Manchin to implement this type of legislation. NRA opposes, and will continue to oppose, universal background checks and registration schemes.
We do believe that records of those who are prohibited by law from purchasing firearms (including those whose mental health history puts them in this category) ought to be included in the federal instant check system.
BIKERNET STAFFER COMMENTS ON NEW GIRL OF BIKERNET STORY–But there’s this: Odds are a dude who’s young, dumb and full of cum (and some of us old farts, too) will never use his brain when it comes to getting laid. HOW A GYNECOLOGIST BECAME A MECHANIC– My cousin who used to be a gynecologist became fed up with malpractice insurance and HMO paperwork, and was burned out. Hoping to try another career where skillful hands would be beneficial, he decided to become a mechanic. He went to the local technical college, signed up for evening classes, attended diligently, and learned all he could.
When the time of the practical exam approached, the Lee prepared carefully for weeks, and completed the exam with tremendous skill. When the results came back, he was surprised to find that he had obtained a score of 150%. Fearing an error, he called the Instructor, saying, “I don’t want to appear ungrateful for such an outstanding result, but I wonder if there is an error in the grade?”
“The instructor said, “During the exam, you took the engine apart perfectly, which was worth 50% of the total mark. You put the engine back together again perfectly, which is also worth 50% of the mark.”
After a pause, the instructor added, “I gave you an extra 50% because you did it all through the muffler, which I’ve never seen done in my entire career.”

They surround the small building adjacent to central command, the doors are wide open. As they slink slowly through the building, small air gun darts pepper them in the neck and body; they’ve been drugged.
Voodoomama and Liz stagger and collapse. Yang, too, staggers and falls down. Three men in lab coats creep out of the dark corners. They chatter in Mandarin and move closer to the three women. One holding a handgun rattles that they must be American Goldlance and need to be executed immediately.

BIKERNET OPENS FISHING RESORT– I went fishing one morning to check out our new pond, but after a short time I ran out of worms. Then I saw a cottonmouth with a frog in his mouth. Frogs are good bass bait.
Knowing the snake couldn’t bite me with the frog in his mouth I grabbed him right behind the head, took the frog, and put it in my bait bucket.
Now the dilemma was how to release the snake without getting bit.

I released him into the lake without incident and carried on fishing using the frog.
A little later, I felt a nudge on my foot. It was that damn snake, with two more frogs.

ACE CAFÉ REPORT IN FROM LONDON–Mod n’ Mini Night Gig – 4th April
The Sha La La’s Mod band will be playing originals and covers, and promoting their new track (Keep On) Risin’ Up To Love, supported by The High-s, at the Ace on Thursday 4th April’s Mod n’ Mini Night ( 6pm – 11pm). Free Entry.
In the year Bradley Wiggins helped put Mod and 6Ts style back on the international stage, it’s nice to know there are a few bands out there determined to add a new spin and twist to a time-served musical force.
And just a month after the latest deluxe re-issues featuring The Jam, on the strength of The Sha La La’s (Keep on) Risin’ up to love EP, the flame still burns.
Think back to the urgency of Weller, Foxton and Buckler’s first LP In The City, and speed 35 years forward (yes, it’s that long) to find a similarly-driven trio inspired by that spirit of classic soul and high-octane guitar-based r’n’b.
Where The Jam’s seminal debut material showcased everyone from Small Faces and The Who through to Wilson Pickett and Otis Redding, all that and more is woven into the grooves of this South-East three piece’s latest output.
Lead track (Keep On) Risin’ Up To Love has shades of The Who’s I Can’t Explain and the feel of a Weller classic, and you could so easily see Otis giving this fine track his all on Ready Steady Go way back when.
Losin’ It has a touch of a James Taylor Quartet cover of a long-forgotten TV theme, but with added zip and plenty of old Motown, Atlantic, Northern Soul and Stax magic.
AND HERE’S MY HORROR STORY WITH SUM GOOD ADVICE TO ALL CHEVY DRIVERS—The Houston street warriors hit my suburban last Tue while Naylor & I were 20 ft away having dinner in Memphis. Popped the door lock & bypassed alarm. There was another truck between me, sitting in a picture window, & my truck.
I had just rolled in from Houston -unhooked from RV & luckily -had only ONE Colt pistol in it . NO CAMERAS – thank GOD.
They also got my “hippy purse”- with 20+ credit cards -two check books – cards from 4 banks-all my keys-a gold necklace & diamond cross. And since Mon was a DAMN holiday when we left for trip – i had $3,200+ cash in it to deposit the next day in memphis from the gun show just finished.
They also grabbed Tammy’s clothes bag from the back . She had to fly Thur. morn to N C for a ER bike show. It was fully packed with all her staff uniform shirts -favorite jeans – new christmas boots – work shoes – all new makeup – etc etc-
(think she madder than me)
Needless to say I’ve been on phone for two days with card folks & at two banks – what a nightmare.
Just a heads up for anyone you know who drives a Chevy. THE FACTORY ALARM IS BYPASSED by taking a big screwdriver and popping out door key lock- going thru it and turning off and unlocking it.
I have fixed the problem with a $600+ SUPER ALARM.
If they touch my truck – horns starts honkin’ and if they do any serious bump or anything -very loud horns – sirens – lights flashin – will wake up a city block- also up to a mile away my remote goes off flashin buzzin & vibrating- showing me exactly what has been touched – bumped- opened -etc.
Next week I will add the I-phone addition- will immediately call me and show same as above. Will also show where truck is on a map -as it moves – will move on map-I can also start truck or open doors where it sits, while I may be anywhere else in the world.
I also still have the factory alarm & a 3rd “battery alarm siren” – in case they think they smart & cut alarm wire -or battery wires.
This is a separate siren alarm bolted to truck & cannot be turned off by them- even if unbolted & thrown down street- it will scream for 2+ hrs.

BIKERNET INTERNATIONAL EDITOR TOURS CHINA’S SUMMER PALACE AND THE GREAT WALL–Just got back today from the great wall – it is great. Need to be in shape – two hours up and down steep stairs Had to get up early 6:45 am for the tour bus – it’s about two hours out.
Also stopped at the Ming Tombs – buried family of Ming Empire. These Emperors sure collected lots of stuff and built lots of stuff too.
It has been cold – very cold. I am covered five layers deep today. It snowed here a few days back and some is still on the street.
People have all been very friendly and helpful for the most part. The Chinese seem to have an inherent dismissive disposition.
I have had two very helpful tour guides I met online. One took me to all those palaces on Friday. Today I went with an organized group tour – $26 USD
Lots of Mc D’s – Starb – Piz Hut – and KFC plus others
Today was pretty hazy when we came back down the mountain.
Chinese food is not up to Americanized version in most cases.Today was a very good provided lunch – best meal so far. Lots of dishes served family style on the lazy susan table.
Got “robbed” at the airport exchanging 100 usd for 540 Yuan. I got 610 at the bank – but I needed the local currency. Wasn’t as bad as the holdup in Rome – where they hit me for 20%
My room is pretty decnet – and VERY warm – have to open the window. Small but very clean and neat – newer – quiet in best Embassy area.
It’s a bargain at $50 – most in this area are over $100
One block to a major foreigner bar area – but looks way too touristy. I just pass by it all trying to dodge the touts.
Also next to a highend mall – the Apple store is all glass and mobbed.
Had a beer and a salad at a German place came to 75Y=$13 6Y/$. Just had – some soup and chinese version of goyza $2.00 for both.
It was a little Mom dive near the hotel on the back street
Last night was a bigger local place – spaghetti like noodles and meatball sou; 37Y.
Very busy looking popular with the locals – included a cup of tea.
Tea is not automatic and free here – you usually get a pot of hot water tea is extra.
The “guide” on the first day tried to pay for much of our day. As the girl on the next day was very insistent on paying for most. I couldn’t even shove money in her purse – quite hospitable.
Taxi at airport was full of scammers as usual – one tried for 400Y. I knew that 100 would be more than the meter and found an honest guy for that.
Taxis are actually reasonably cheap here – fares are only a few dollars for a short ride.
Had Peking duck at the high end place Friday – very good meal there also.
It is on the street of a thousand steps – that’s how long it is..
It looks like something Disney would make – a Chinese version of Main Street.
Speaking of Disney – we went by a bankrupt beginnings of a Disneyland here.
The in room internet is kinda slow to boot up and dodgy on performance a few hiccups.
The stores and malls still have Christmas decorations up even though they don’t do Xmas.

All Aboard!
Yet another stellar week haulin’ ass through space aboard spaceship earth, destination unknown? Other than the upcoming Mojave Mile, April 20-21 wrapped in a set of bad ass black Vanson Leathers, 5-Ball on the back, with my ass glued to the saddle aboard our two wheeled 5-Ball Racing Teams 124 cubic inch Twin Cam Turbo Charged Rocket we call Raycer.
The photo above is Rocky Robinson on the left the fastest two-wheeled pilot on earth today, on the right your resident adrenaline junky. With all of the events and race tracks listed you might consider adding a Land Speed event to your bucket list.
You too, will be offered the opportunity to become a hopelessly addicted adrenaline junky of the highest caliber, pure unadulterated massive amounts of adrenaline. I’m stepping off of my give-it-hell-soap box and on to the news.
Everyday this past week has been an ass kicker of sorts from the crack of dawn until midnight getting ready for the V-Twin show in cold ass, windy on occasion, Cincy next week end. Monday hauled ass out of the Bikernet headquarters destination Lyndall Racing Brakes located about 45 minutes South on the 405 to sticker and package the finest friction material available for all of your braking needs from steel rotors to Lyndall’s stellar Composite rotors. Ask your local dealers to stop by the Lyndall booth, #6 to check out the latest in friction materials and Composite Rotors with a patented lug drive system. We’ll run a special report about friction materials and rotors in the upcoming weeks.
The team at Metalsport display in booth #454 will include the latest in Big Wheels, a 30-inch wheel, matching lug drive carriers and a nuts on Composite rotor. While the crew at Colorado Custom machine the perfect matching carriers.
Had the extreme pleasure of spending time with Kiwi Mike and his crew while we loaded displays and materials for the V-Twin Show. The Kiwi crew rolls East bound Monday morning with a load of the latest motorcycle treasures.

CAPONE RACING & TEAM HEADBLADE–
Off season from racing is not a time for meditation and relaxation, it’s time to get new parts, sometimes new paint, make deals with sponsors, and set the season’s calendar.

Both teams now plan to pursue records and Championships with the AMRA and will run NHRA Screamin’ Eagle divisionals on the East Coast and Midwest and possibly the NHRA finals in Las Vegas, NV.
“We encourage our friends and fans to make this conversion with us, it’ll be new tracks and new competition and we’re ready,” says Capone.

ANOTHER ONE DOWN—I don’t like to be political. I like to build motorcycles, ride free, and be left alone. I don’t get all this conflict. I joke that the school moms are taking over society. I especially don’t get the media. I ask agent Zebra if the government plans to hit on the first admendment—Free Speech. Here is his response:
They are going after the First Amendment already. Have you read any of the new articles by columnist and Pulitzer Prize-winner George Will, in the Washington Post? But to really go after the First Amendment, you have to first remove the enforcement clause of the Bill of Rights. Which, we both know is the Second Amendment.—Agent Zebra
It’s all nuts, but we need to be involved. The absolute best thing you can do, would be to immediately join your local motorcycle rights association. They will keep you informed. Of course you can also join the NRA.
I don’t know how anyone can paint a membership driven gun club that supports freedom as the bad guy. But what the hell do I know. I believe in Freedom. If I die because of it, at least I died for something.
Okay, so tomorrow we will launch this wild Girl of Bikernet, then Rogue’s Twin-Cam bearing tech, then an interview with Simon Scott, the new owner of the Big Bear brand. This article will hopefully clear up some concerns about BBC. Then I’ll dive into a couple of very cool features, then a tech on Centramatic balancers, and another one on Digital Dawg keyless ignition. Since my Mudflap girls is coming apart, I’ll make all the changes, and you’ll see all the installations on Bikernet.
Next week will bring V-Twin Expo plans and travels, then the mighty Super Bowl. Hang on!
Ride Forever,
–Bandit
