HONORING VETERANS SUNDAY POST FOR NOVEMBER 11, 2012

Hey,

Honoring Veterans Day. Buy a veteran lunch, a drink, or hell go for a ride. I attempted to tour the battleship Iowa yesterday, but the crowds were daunting, and I’m not a crowd sorta guy. I peeled out, and it was just as well.

Later in the evening I met with the lovely Gina and Dr. Hamster. John Covington, formerly of Covington Cycles was involved in an art exhibit in Culver City. John was ripped off and lost his business, but survived like any self-respecting biker should. He built a beautiful home in Phoenix, a photo studio and shop. He looks after his former customers, and has become a magnificent photographer. He just got engaged. So, life is damn good.

Don’t forget you can get a free sandwich at Subway if you’re a vet until 10:00 in the morning. What the hell? Got to get up early.

BIKERNET UNIVERSITY CADETS VETERANS DAY VOCABULARY LESSON–cahoots kuh-HOOT, noun:
In partnership; in league.
The soldier could only have concluded that my grandfather was in serious cahoots with John Brown, and attention of that kind could destroy everything.
— Marilynne Robinson, Gilead: A Novel
The dreamers did not know that Kuyo and I, as if in cahoots with the soldiers, had trapped and imprisoned them on the island.
— Russell Banks, The Darling: A Novel
Cahoots enters English in the United States in the 1800s, possibly derived from the French cahute, “cabin, hut,” but others trace it to the roots of the English word cohort.

SUNDAY TECH QUESTION–
I was wondering if I could get an estimate to have the pictured tank modified? 1) I would like to have the seam around the bottom of the tank removed. 2) I would also like to have the rear bottom portion(green tape) cut and made even/level with the forward bottom part of the tank.

California Air Resources Board (CARB) says E15 ethanol-gas blend won’t appear in California for ‘years’– The California Air Resources Board has told the American Motorcyclist Association that even if it approves the sale of the new E15 ethanol-gasoline blend in California, the blend wouldn’t appear in the market for several years.

CARB made the comment in response to a letter from AMA Vice President for Government Relations Wayne Allard, who expressed concern about potential misfueling of E15 into motorcycles and all-terrain vehicles. E15 is a gasoline formulation that contains up to 15 percent ethanol, and the federal Environmental Protection Agency hasn’t approved its use in motorcycles or ATVs.

To avoid misfueling, the EPA is requiring warning labels on gas pumps and requiring all consumers buy at least four gallons of gas when they buy from blender pumps. A blender pump dispenses different fuel blends through the same hose.

Michael Waugh, chief of the CARB transportation fuels branch, responded to Allard’s letter on behalf of CARB Chairwoman Mary Nichols. In his Nov. 6 letter, Waugh said: “Please be advised that E15 is not approved for sale in California, and if ARB chooses to allow E15 as a transportation fuel, it would take several years to complete the vehicle testing and rule development necessary to introduce a new transportation fuel into California’s market.

“Meanwhile, U.S. EPA has committed to ‘closely follow the results of their E15 Compliance Survey to determine whether additional misfueling mitigation measures are necessary.’ We will follow U.S. EPA’s continued assessment of E15 misfueling and will keep in mind these concerns should we move forward with allowing E15 in California,” Waugh wrote.  The California Air Resources Board is a part of the California Environmental Protection Agency. Its mission is to promote and protect public health, welfare and ecological resources through the effective and efficient reduction of air pollutants while recognizing and considering the effects on the economy of the state.

The AMA has repeatedly expressed concerns to government officials and federal lawmakers about possible damage to motorcycle and ATV engines caused by the inadvertent use of E15 when the new fuel becomes widely available, and has asked that motorcycles and ATVs be part of any scientific study into the effects of E15 on engines.

Ethanol is essentially grain alcohol produced from crops that is mixed with gasoline to produce an ethanol-gasoline blend motor fuel. In October 2010, the EPA approved the use of E15 in model year 2007 and newer light-duty vehicles (cars, light-duty trucks and medium-duty passenger vehicles). Then, in January 2011, the EPA added model year 2001-06 light-duty vehicles to the approved list.

COULD IT BE TRUE?–A Ford Dealer’s Report – From Tom Selkis’ (Latham Ford) Facebook – True story yesterday at the dealership– “I’ll try to make this as short and to the point as I can.

One of my salesmen here had a woman in his office yesterday wanting to lease a brand new Focus. As he was reviewing her credit application with her he noticed she was on social security disability.

He said to her you don’t look like you’re disabled and unable to work.

She said well I’m really not. I could work if I wanted to, but I make more now than I did when I was working and got hurt (non-disabling injury).
She said the gov’t sends her $1500.00 a month in 1 check. And she gets $700.00 a month on an EBT card (food stamps), and $800.00 a month for rent. Oh yeah, and 250 minutes free on her phone.
That is just south of $3500.00 a month.
When she was working, she was taking home about $330.00 per week.

Do the math and then ask yourself why the hell should she go back to work. If you multiply that by millions of people, you start to realize the scope of the problem we face as a country.

She didn’t lease the Focus here because the dealer down the road beat our deal by $10.00/month. Glad to know she is so frugal with her hard earned money.

AMA Motorcycle Hall of Famer BEN NIGHTHORSE CAMPBELL trucking 2012 Capitol Christmas Tree to Washington, D.C. —Former Colorado U.S. Sen. Ben Nighthorse Campbell, a member of the AMA Motorcycle Hall of Fame, is behind the wheel of a Mack truck hauling the nation’s 2012 Capitol Christmas Tree from Colorado to Washington, D.C., the American Motorcyclist Association reports.

“It is a privilege to drive the tree for the U.S. Capitol from Colorado this year,” said Campbell, who was inducted into the AMA Motorcycle Hall of Fame in 2001. Campbell, an avid motorcyclist, represented Colorado in Congress from 1993 to 2005.

Choose Outdoors, a national nonprofit coalition for outdoor recreation, is coordinating the 2012 Capitol Christmas Tree tour with the White River National Forest, where the 73-foot-tall Colorado Engleman spruce tree was harvested.

The almost-four-week-long trip began in Meeker, Colo., where the tree was harvested from the White River National Forest in the heart of the Rocky Mountains.

On the way to Washington, D.C., the tree is scheduled to stop in cities and towns in Colorado, Oklahoma, Texas, Missouri, North Carolina, Pennsylvania and Virginia.

The custom-decorated Mack truck used to haul the tree was fitted with a special cradle to support the tree’s branches. ??The AMA and AMA Motorcycle Hall of Fame are urging motorcyclists along the route to greet Campbell and the tree during its journey.  The next stop is in Denver from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. on TODAY, Nov. 11, at the Midtown Development at 6700 Pecos St. The AMA will post route updates on its Facebook page at www.facebook.com/AmericanMotorcyclist

BIKERNET QUOTE OF THE DAY–
The art of war teaches us to rely not on the likelihood of the enemy’s not coming, but on our own readiness to receive him; not on the chance of his not attacking, but rather on the fact that we have made our position unassailable.

NRA ON VETERANS DAY–Every year on this date we pause to honor our veterans — those men and women who carried our flag into unknown horrors, many never to return. To every American veteran, the NRA Life of Duty team extends its sincere gratitude for your service.

We’d all do well to take a minute’s pause to reflect on the blessings we enjoy because of a courageous few. Two years ago today, we launched NRA Life of Duty to give voice to those who serve. We’re tremendously proud of the work we’ve done since, honoring service and sacrifice in a way you just don’t see anywhere else.

Please watch the preview of our newest Patriot Profile, sponsored by Smith & Wesson: the story of Tom and Scot Spooner, brothers, one who retired and another who served 17 years in the United States Army, serving in Special Forces and Special Operations capacities.

They are making the adjustment and transformation from military service to civilian life their “new normal.” A soul-searching look into the heart of warriors and their reflections on the nation and the freedom they fought for, this documentary is a moving story of faith and courage that should be seen by every American citizen.

After you watch the video, please take some time to explore the brand-new NRA Life of Duty online network. You’ll find many other moving pieces about our nation’s heroes. And if you are active-duty military, law enforcement or first responder personnel, sign up for a free NRA Life of Duty membership. It’s just a small token of thanks from all of us at the National Rifle Association.

A LETTER TO UNCLE MONKEY–Just wanted to say Hi again and thanks for all for your support.

As you can see my blue DWXR is getting close to being finished and ridden.

I need to finish the wiring, pick up a front tire, kickstand, horn, build the seat, and start it up.

I could have easily taken it all apart and tried to sell the parts, but that is not what it is all about.

There is a great pride in finishing a project and riding it to show it off.

And with the current trend going from Softails, Pro-street to the vintage look, I enjoy building and riding a bike built for me by me.

Regardless of the current trends. This blue FXR clone is my idea with my time and money spent.

It is still far from the Mudflap Fxr but still what I want.

Uncle monkey, your Snow white Fxst along with the Mudflap Fxr was most
of the inspiration I needed to keep going even when their was no money I still found things I could build or in many cases change.

Again THANKS and keep building and riding.

–Doug Watson

IN THE AFTERMATH– of the election it looks like hanging on to whatever assets one has is going to be a must.  I will adopting a even more frugal lifestyle than before. The saying “Count your pennies and the dollars will take care of themselves”. Makes even more sense than ever!!

The company I work for, my job are directly related to the funding of the defense department. The funding of Veterans Admin. also affects me in a big way. I go to the VA for health care in addition to using my insurance from work.

These are some my concerns for my future and also to all my veteran friends.
So lets keep a keen eye on the Fed. Hold them accountable for their actions.
Let’s all take the time to reflect and honor all of our Veterans on Veterans Day. Our American heros.

THE RED CROSS REACHES OUT —During this time as our country pulls together to respond to the millions impacted by Hurricane Sandy, we must not forget the unwavering support that our military service members provide for us every day at home and around the world. Over this holiday season, many service members will find themselves celebrating far from loved ones stationed in remote locations or recuperating in military hospitals.

This Veterans Day, you can show your support for our military heroes at home and abroad by giving a gift from our 2012 Holiday Giving Catalog:

• For a soldier stationed overseas: Phone cards ($20) connect a lonely soldier far from home with their loved ones, and make the distance a little more bearable during the holidays.
• For a wounded warrior recovering in the hospital: Military comfort kits ($50) include a robe, shower shoes, toothpaste, an MP3 music gift card and other items that bring a warm, personal touch to a soldier’s hospital stay.
• For an injured hero returning home from service: A Red Cross caregiver training course ($75) can give family and friends the confidence and skills they need to care for the loved one they’re welcoming home.

For over 100 years, the Red Cross has proudly served our nation’s soldiers, veterans and military families – and we’re proud to have the support of generous, thoughtful people like you. Thank you so much for standing with us as we recognize the selflessness and courage of the military service members and veterans who have dedicated their lives to protecting our own.

BIKERNET MEDICAL CENTER RECENT FINDINGS–Exercise Wards Off Dementia.
As little as 30 minutes of exercise three times a week may cut the risk of dementia in seniors by 40 percent.

This physical activity can also help ward off the age-related decline in thinking skills by 60 percent, according to a new study published online November 1, 2012, by the journal Stroke. European researchers followed 639 seniors in their 60s and 70s for three years and checked up on them annually.

Exercise enhances blood flow to the brain, plus many other benefits to muscle tone, balance, blood quality, and injury avoidance due to increased strength.

LET’S CELEBRATE AND GO FOR A RIDE—I’m beginning to jones for a putt, and to road test the Stiffeys in the Mudflap girl. I’ve done a lot to adjust the suspension, and I may have it dialed in. We’ll see.

Ever since I returned from a quick SEMA trip, I’ve been scrambling on the to-do lists. My notes are over-run, but you’ll see a couple of features finished next week, another chapter of World Run, and perhaps another tech. The first feature from Jamie in Big Bend, Wisconsin contains an amazing story of survival through the tough years. Again, a tough shop-owner survived.

I have another travel feature to post from Josh Placa, our desert Tarantula correspondent. Watch next week as the Travel section comes together. Eagle Riders stepped up to sponsor our Travel Department, and don’t miss Bikernet Betsy’s coverage of the Love Ride. So, hopefully by the end of the week I’ll be able to toss the old note pad and start anew.

Ride Forever,

–Bandit
