Hey,
The truck project is winding down, and the Salt Torpedo project is hitting high gear. I’m a little concerned about the money, but fuck it.
You only go around once, gotta give it hell. I may need to sell a motorcycle or two. I have a ’46 Indian and a my new Panhead. They could go, I suppose.
Okay, so I will start searching for resources on Monday and I hope I will find them in Long Beach. Where’s Jesse James when you need his shop?
I’m going to retire some aspects of Bikernet on the first of January and we are going to roll Bikernet into the Cantina and keep 5-Ball Racing and the Bikernet Blog.
I’m going to slow down some to focus on another book and the Salt Torpedo.
Let’s see how that works. I’m open to suggestions.
And I’m planning to keep one news column a week, either during the week or Sunday, but not both.
Let’s hit the news:

-Reuters
“The U.S. economy sits atop of the World Economic Forum’s annual global competitiveness survey for the first time since the 2007-2009 financial crisis,” Katanga Johnson reports. Under President Donald J. Trump, America scored high because of “its ‘vibrant’ entrepreneurial culture and ‘strong’ labor market and financial system,’” according to the WEF report.

The Trump Administration’s Deregulation Efforts are Saving Billions of Dollars
-The Washington Post
In The Washington Post, Neomi Rao, Administrator of the Office of Information and Regulatory Affairs, explains how the Trump Administration has cut regulations at breakneck speed. “When reviewing regulations, we start with a simple question: What is the problem this regulation is trying to fix? Unless otherwise required by law, we move forward only when we can identify a serious problem or market failure that would be best addressed by federal regulation.”
Jobless Claims Drop 5,000 to 210,000 in Mid-October, Stick Near 50-Year Low
-MarketWatch
“It can’t get a whole lot better in the U.S. job market. Openings just hit a record high, the U.S. unemployment rate has fallen to a 48-year low of 3.7% and hiring remains robust,” Jeffry Bartash reports. The strong demand for American labor is pushing up wages and benefits, as well, fueling the longest economic expansion in U.S. history.
Signs of Stability in Individual Health Care Market
-Fox News
“As a result of ObamaCare, average premiums on the federal exchange jumped by 105 percent between 2013 and 2017,” CMS Administrator Seema Verma writes. For the first time since ObamaCare was enacted, the premium for a typical federal exchange plan—while still much too high—will drop.”

-Washington Examiner
“The Obama administration released thousands of unaccompanied alien children to criminal sponsors,” writes Dr. Jason Piccolo, a former ICE Supervisor. “I know because I was the Homeland Security whistleblower who legally came forward in late 2015 to the U.S. Office of Special Counsel and to Sen. Chuck Grassley’s office about the releases . . . Only now is this serious and dangerous problem finally being dealt with.”

humdinger

The origin of humdinger is speculative. It was originally American slang, first appearing in print at the beginning of the 20th century and in British English about 1926.

NMA ACTION–Urban Bliss, Thy Name isn’t Jonathan–
At a time when urban planners often strive to limit automobile travel within city confines, the concept of planned communities – those reminiscent of the late 19th century company towns where residents could find most necessary services within walking, bicycling, or trolley distances – lessons can be learned from the failed pod community experiment known as Jonathan, Minnesota.
Jonathan, which exists today not as the futuristic planned community for thousands envisioned when it was created in the late 1960s but as a neighborhood association, is located within the city of Chaska, about 25 miles southwest of Minneapolis.
The original plan was to build a self-contained town with employers located in nearby industrial parks and grocery and retail shopping within easy commuting distance.
The homes all had a similar, nondescript look, not unlike the pre-fab, tract homes built in the 1950s. Neighborhoods within Jonathan had simple 1, 2, 3 type designations. Utopia by the numbers. A high-speed (for the times) rail link was provided to Minneapolis for those who occasionally would want to venture outside of the pod.
Jonathan folded as a town after about ten years and was absorbed by Chaska. Many reasons are cited, from the founder/visionary dying in 1972 to the turmoil caused by the energy crisis of those years. Just as likely a desire for independence and freedom of travel by inhabitants, targeted to grow to 50,000 but never reaching even a tenth of that, prevailed.
As we face efforts today, spurred by programs like Vision Zero, to restrict driving and to develop self-reliant, cocooned communities, there are lessons to be learned from what has become of the Jonathan dream. While some point to the vagaries of pressures from without, it may just be that the pod mentality as a limited lifestyle is not for most people.

BOXING REPORTS COME TO BIKERNET–In a hidden gem out in the dessert, in the middle of nowhere, is an incredible concept…. Boxing! Real boxing, in the ring, cold beers, bags of snacks, what more could you want?
To me, this was a dream come true. The Fantasy Springs Resort & Casino is not a scary creepy place like most California casino ‘s. The vibe was good, & the fights were on.
Goldenboy Productions presents Thursday Night Fight Nights. These fight nights are a great opportunity for the boxers, the lovers of boxing, and for people at home, they can watch it on ESPN. We’re still in a win win situation here.
Seven boxing matches is what was on the menu. Starting with 4 rounds of super lightweight’s was a nice warm up.
There were boxers from New York, Tijuana Mexico, the Philippines, Buena Park California, Coachella California and Amagasaki Japan!
The co main event was welterweights going for 8 rounds. Eddie Gomez out of the Bronx NY 21-3 (12 KO’s) weighed in at 146 lbs. vs Shoki Sakai 22-8-2 (12 KO’s) 145.8 lbs fighting out of Amagasaki Japan. These boxers went all eight rounds. Giving it all they had. This was not a dancing competition. These fighters boxed! No boo’s from the crowd. Gomez from the Bronx leaves the ring victorious.
Now let’s get to the main event.
Jason Quigley the pride of Donegal Ireland 14-0 ( 11 KO’s) 159.6 lbs vs Freddy Hernandez 34-9 (22 KO’s) 159.6 lbs. out of Mexico City Mexico.
Hernandez was aggressive and fighting in a very straightforward way. He had Quigley all around the edges of the ring all night long. However, Quigley was landing some insane body shots to Hernandez’s left side, that I know is going to be hurtin for certain today.
Quigley, an LA favorite, had quite a few fans in the crowd. They were stomping their feet, waving the Irish flag, and having a killer time. These boxers had incredible combinations and we’re fighting round after round. But what stands out, was Quigley unleashing masses of punches that were so fast it was pretty unbelievable. Quigley had also dominated in body punches.
Hernandez was badly swollen, cut and bleeding and bruised. When the score cards were announced there was a lot of booing in the audience, but I was there. I watched the fight, and Jason Quigley was the better fighter last night, and remains undefeated.
98-92
98-91
Congratulations Jason Quigley, still the champ!
Thank you for taking the time to read my article on Thursday night’s boxing matches. There’s a ton of boxing going on around the world, and I’m here to bring you the highlights!

CHP TO ADDRESS MOTORCYCLE SAFETY WITH FEDERAL FUNDS
The California Highway Patrol is using a federal grant to promote motorcycle safety throughout the state, with the goal of reducing the most dangerous traffic violations which they say are speeding, improper turning, and driving under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs.
There are more than 1.4 million people with a motorcycle license in the state. The education campaign is called GEARS, or Get Educated And Ride Safe.
The year-long campaign will include the CHP deploying officers on enhanced motorcycle safety enforcement operations in regions with a high number of motorcycle incidents. There will be a series of motorcycle traffic safety education campaigns, including the May is Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month. Officers plan to stress the use of properly approved helmets for all riders and raise motorists’ awareness of sharing the road with motorcyclists.
According to provisional data from 2017, the number of motorcycle accident victims shows a 6% decrease compared to the previous year.
PHILIPPINE POLICE SEIZE MODIFIED MOTORCYCLES & ACCESSORIES
The past few months have been very busy for law enforcement officers in the Philippines, where police have apprehended traffic violators, cited smoke belching vehicles, and impounded erring motorcycle riders’ property.
Among those apprehended were motorcycles fitted with certain modifications, which have been serving as a bone of contention for both riders and enforcers, according to MotoPinas.com. Among those accessories confiscated were auxiliary LED lighting systems, aftermarket mufflers, aftermarket side mirrors, and upgraded brakes which aren’t compliant with Motor Vehicle Inspection System (MVIS) guidelines.
The Motorcycle Rights Organization (MRO-Philippines) suggests that when apprehended for fitting illegal accessories, refuse the order to remove your accessories and insist the apprehending officer remove the accessories from your motorcycle “because as far as the LTO (Land Transportation Office) is concerned, you are within set regulations,” adding “Do not argue with the apprehending officers. There is always a proper/lawful venue for contesting the apprehension.”
SINGAPORE BIKER GROUPS AGGRIEVED BY BAN ON OLDER MOTORCYCLES
When the National Environment Agency (NEA) announced on April 6 that motorcycles registered before July 1, 2003 would be banned from the roads after June 30, 2028, many riders’ dreams of having an older classic motorcycle or “hand down our precious bikes to our children,” went “down the drain.”
Calling it a “Plain injustice,” bikers say the ban “will push rare, vintage bikes into oblivion.”
The NEA told ChannelNewsAsia that the government is trying to reduce emissions from some 27,000 older motorcycles as part of a push to meet Singapore’s air quality targets by 2020. Owners of older motorcycles have been offered up to S$3,500 to de-register their bikes within the next five years. Beyond that, emission standards for such motorcycles will be tightened, before the 2028 ban kicks in.
These initiatives come as NEA figures indicate that older bikes emit up to 30 times more pollutants than new bikes, and contribute 40% of the total carbon monoxide emitted by motorcycles on the road. Bikers counter that all motorcycles, regardless of age, must pass inspection and emissions testing, though older bikes are subject to less stringent standards.
Explaining its rationale for the July 1, 2003 cut-off date, NEA said Singapore adopted Euro 1 type approval standards for new motorcycles on that date. Motorcycles registered before that are more pollutive than newer models which comply with the Euro 4 standard.
Some of these bikes, however, may be able to stay on the roads even after the ban — provided they are converted under the Classic Vehicle Scheme, which allows vehicles to be used for up to 45 days in a calendar year. But the catch is that to qualify for the scheme, the bikes must be at least 35 years old; meaning that when the ban begins in 2028, affected bikes registered after June 1993 will not qualify…so “nearly two decades of bikes will be destroyed…put into storage…or exported.”

THE TRIKE ROAD REPORT–Debbie had a second back surgery in Switzerland last January; she switched from her two wheeler to a CanAm Spyder just before her first surgery in September ’16. The machine is extremely well made and engineered.
We’re in Boerne Texas for the fifth annual 4 day event, Spyders In The Hills Rally sponsored by a great local dealer, Coyote Power Sports.
Today is their final day with a grand finale and parade down Main St with the Road Warriors leading; RW’s have been on the road for five consecutive days with their final destination being this rally where the participants will be honored at the end of the parade. Several specialized CanAm high quality vendors are at rally HQ’s along with food vendors. The event is well organized.

THE INFRASTRUCTURE QUESTION—Biker-Friendly Guard Rails.
The subject of highway and motorway gausrd rails has long been a thorny subject for riders’ rights groups…S, when the European riders’ rights organization FEMA saw pictures of a new experimental Dutch barrier, it initially thought it was a guard rail aimed at providing protection to cotorcyclists in the event of an accidents.
Not quite.
The Dutch firm Heijmans installed 80- yards of flexible solar panels on original steel W-beam guard rails, on which electricity generating foil is covered with a strong transparent polycarbonate layer—it has to be strong enough to bear the wiight of a person climbing over it in an emergency. .
The idea is to experiment with alternqative ways of generating electrick power but I coupled have a secondary and extremely welcome effect of making crash barriers less dangerous to riders by providing smooth topside.
FEMA is all over these guys. They are also all over infrastructure improvement for motorcyclists. The government want to regulate us, ban us, but not protect us.

GUN NUT REPORT–Poll: Most Americans Oppose Ban on “America’s Rifle”
This week, Gallup released the results of a poll which included a finding that should surprise no one: Americans oppose a ban on AR-15s and similar semiautomatic firearms by robust a margin of 17%.
Meanwhile, current support for such a ban is 7% lower than the historical trend dating back to 1996, when Gallup first began polling on the issue.

WILD IN THE STREETS—This next week will be wild, will research all over LA regarding the Salt Torpedo, we need a tube bending machine, or a local expert. We need some heim joints, which I hope to get from McMaster Car. We need a steering box and wheel. That will do the trick for now.
Once we have the frame dialed in and shortened, we will rock on all the other aspects. I want to build the frame and get the bottom half of the belly tank in place. That will tell us so much.
Hang on for the first of many reports next week.
And remember Ride Free, goddammit.
