In David’s words, “It has been 2 years since the introduction of Evelyn, the last piece in my”Women of Harley Series”. The Evelyn painting was a portrait of a seasonedrider on her way to a hill climb in the early thirties. She was composed ofbig bold strokes with expressive paint and colors. I got to thinking of how womenfirst climbed astride the iron horse in the first place and did alittle research. It appears that the decade before was the culprit forparadigm shift of attitudes: “The Roaring Twenties” . Now I wanted todo an accurate rendering with all the details of this slice ofAmerican history.

david uhl stella 1

I decided to produce a piece that went full circle back to the”Ruby” era, except focus on the motorcycle as the catalyst of change.Stella sits outside the Oxford Hotel on a shiny new Harley Davidson infull ’20s regalia, igniting the onslaught of the previous Victoriangeneration’s display of contempt. These young women of the ’20s couldnot have been more shocking to their parents — they flew airplanes, rode motorcycles and stayed out dancing until the morning hours, not tomention the attire. Harley-Davidson’s rich heritage includes thesetype of scenes, and I hope you enjoy my window into that past.”

The notoriously bearded blues-rock power trio will be celebrating their 40th Anniversary next year and is looking forward to ringing in this musical achievement with a rowdy crowd of Chipsters.

Bikers say bye-bye to Cobleskill —Am-Jam, the three-day biker festival held at the Cobleskill Fairgrounds every May for 25 years, isn?t returning this spring.American Motorcycle Jamboree organizer Jean Aldus said last week that she?s fed up with State Police, the Chamber of Commerce and what she termed an uncooperative attitude in Cobleskill.

But the targets of Ms. Aldus? wrath denied any wrong-doing, saying instead that they tried to help Am-Jam.

Am-Jam regularly brought 5,000 bikers, who spent thousands in Cobleskill and surrounding areas. Numbers dwindled in recent years, however, and Ms. Aldus blamed the mounting problems.Ms. Aldus said she made her decision last year after a meeting with Schoharie County Chamber of Commerce representatives ?was the last straw.??They don?t have a clue,? Ms. Aldus said, adding that the Chamber reps offered little or no promotion and assistance.

However, she singled out the State Police for her sharpest criticism. Ms. Aldus complained about State Police roadblocks that checked bikers as they exited I-88 and entered the Fairgrounds. That was a criticism repeated from past years, and Ms. Aldus said it was the same in 2009.

Instead of being able to travel around the area while at Am-Jam, bikers were ?sequestered at the Fairgrounds? because of the State Police presence, Ms. Aldus said.?I?m glad we don?t have to deal with them anymore,? she added.Ms. Aldus also blasted local businesses, claiming they grew indifferent to bikers and the money they were prepared to spend.?If we?re such an inconvenience to Cobleskill, fine,? Ms. Aldus said. ?Let?s see the town dry up and blow away.

?The whole Town of Cobleskill is a backward, non-progressive area. Our vendors didn?t want to deal with the unfriendliness.?Those enduring Ms. Aldus? criticism see the situation differently.Troop G?s Major William Sprague of the State Police pointed out that Am-Jam attracts Hell?s Angels and other gangs. If the Angels are there, the State Police will be there, too, he said.

?The Hell?s Angels are an internationally known and recognized criminal enterprise,? Major Sprague said. ?We take enforcement action whenever we can against such an organization.?And troopers are hardly to blame for Am-Jam leaving Cobleskill, he added.?Do not believe the State Police carrying out their regular law-enforcement responsibilities is the cause for Am-Jam leaving the Cobleskill Fairgrounds,? Major Sprague said.

As for the Chamber, Executive Director Jodie Rutt said the organization offered assistance and suggestions.

?The Chamber of Commerce loves to support an event like that because we know they spend money, and that money?s important to local businesses,? Ms. Rutt said. But Am-Jam didn?t take up the Chamber?s offers.?We tried to help out with our promotional expertise, but there were obstacles out of our control that we couldn?t overcome,? Ms. Rutt said, without elaborating.Jacqui Hauser, executive director of Cobleskill Partnership Inc., the downtown improvement group, denied that local businesses were uncooperative.

For two years, CPI and businesses posted ?Welcome, Am-Jam? signs in windows and printed flyers describing discounts and offers specifically for Am-Jam visitors.?I think we tried,? Ms. Hauser said. ?We welcomed them here. I don?t know what more we could have done.?

If Am-Jam won?t be in Cobleskill this year, it won?t be anywhere, either.Ms. Aldus said the event will re-surface in the Syracuse area in 2011.?It will take a year to set everything up and change venues,? she said.

FLAMED MIRRORS FROM AEROMACH–The Aeromach Flame Mirror is built using CNC machines to carve lightweight and strong custom mirrors from billet aluminum. The mirror housing is chromed to a show-quality finish. The mirror itself is glass, not a plastic. Aeromach only uses glass because it glass has the best optical properties.

The Optical Secret ? The reason an Aeromach mirror is desirable and isn?t cheap is because of the billet. The density of the aluminum is much higher than the cast stock mirrors from Harley or other accessory suppliers. This metal density combined with glass optics instead of plastic increases the clarity of the mirror by as much as 40% over stock.

The Aeromach mirrors and stems are manufactured in NASCAR country right outside of Charlotte, NC using aircraft quality solid billet extruded T6 aluminum. When the CNC machine isn?t carving up 200 MPH go fast parts, its delivering consistent design and quality motorcycle mirrors, stems and grips..

Aeromach’s mirror are available at the Aeromach Website.

IT’S A WRAP, I SUPPOSE–I’m rolling out to some Los Angeles Canyon tomorrow morning, before sunrise. Sunset Films is shooting the last segment of a Mike Jones film called Born to Ride. Mike has devoted his life to this creative effort for half a decade. He’s rolling the dice once more that this will wrap up production, and I’m apart of the effort.

Senator Dave Zien will be on hand to make sure we follow the code of the west. Dave is the hardest rider I know. He probably rode out from Wisconsin through snow storms, rain squals and flooding to scramble to this shoot. He doesn’t stop for anything.

So what’s coming for Bikernet. I’m waiting for our Texas martial arts master to launched a new Australian feature and a gypsy road story from Scotty. Here’s another mad non-stop rider. Scotty has lived on the road for almost a decade. He has no home except his FLH.

K&Nsuper

I’m working on several techs involving Bubs Exhaust, Bassani, S&S and K&N. Plus I need to roll out to Urban’s place to interview him about the Cannonball run. I’m still prepping for a tech with Paughco on Sportster products, for turning wrecked Sportsters into cool choppers. I’m also working with Baker on a tech on their new 4-speed transmissions.

Chance book cover
The books is being printed as we speak. Yipee.

I’m also drinking heavily and writing the next Bandit’s Cantina Soap. Plus Bikernet has signed two deals to support bike shows around the country. We are sponsoring Ryan’s Donnie Smith, Arlen Ness and Rick Fairless shows, and the LA Calendar show. Hang on for reports.

Okay, the sun is out. It’s time for a ride, goddamnit.

Ride Forever,

–Bandit
