BIKERNET SUNDAY POST 4TH OF JULY HOLIDAY EXTRAVAGANZA MAYBE

jon t lead

Hey,

Another wild weekend at the Bikernet headquarters. Jeremiah, the madman construction guru cut the plumbing and thoughtfully capped it. Except, he cut off the water to the adjoining apartment shower. Shit.

w8less rotor
Here’s the new Ray Wheeler, W8Less solid rotor. It’s not only light but light on the pocketbook.

Ray wheeler rolled into the Headquarters from the S&S 50th with a broken bone in his foot. He helped me with the pushrod manifesto on the Salt Shaker and tried to keep his foot elevated between Bikernet shop assignments.

Georgewild
While Ray rested George, The Wild Brush, pinstriped his tank, fender and helmet.

We scrambled all weekend and I’ll tell you his wicked cross country, two wedding, a breakdown and a 4:00 a.m. crash story on Thursday in the news. Let’s hit the news and I’ll explain more about the dread pushrod disease, the Salt Shaker and the Michael Lichter Display in Sturgis. The bike must be there.

FROM THE BAD COP ARCHIVES– Former San Jose cop charged with felony drunken driving More than three months after San Jose police failed to test a former cop for intoxication or cite her after a serious multi-car accident, the state Attorney General has charged Sandra Woodall with felony drunken driving.

Woodall, 39, now an investigator with the Santa Clara County District Attorney’s office, is expected in court July 10. The charge begs a larger and so far unanswered question: Did police officers at the scene of the March 25 nighttime accident intentionally do an incomplete job while trying to protect Woodall from criminal charges? Soon after realizing one of their own was involved, both police and the district attorney’s office agreed to ask the state prosecutor to look into the case, realizing there was a potential conflict of interest.

There were private worries by officials about whether Woodall was given favorable treatment by fellow cops. Woodall’s husband, Jason, is a sergeant at the department; her father-in-law is Jack Woodall, a former lieutenant at the police department and also a district attorney’s investigator. Officers did not conduct either a field sobriety test or take Woodall’s blood, although they had a statement from a witness who claimed to have overheard Woodall talking about drinking. In car crashes, it is common practice to ask for a blood sample if there is probable cause that the driver may be intoxicated.

BIKERNET BONNEVILLE BOOK DISCOVERED– Found the Bonneville book in my PO Box yesterday. I’ve only had time to just scan through it so far. Looks great! It’s good to see and have the whole effort condensed into one work. It will be a nice reference for anyone with similar goals.

Too bad you didn’t have such a book to rely on. It recaps just how amazing the whole effort turn out. All’s well that ends well. Nice job!….

Chopper challenge

CORRECTIONS FROM THE CHOPPER CHALLENGE EMPEROR– I just wanted you to know that you are speaking to the writer/creator and executive producer of, The Chopper Challenge. Although I truly appreciate your efforts and support, there are MANY corrections that need to made to this article. Starting with, CMT does not own or produce this show in ANY way. V Entertainment Group LLC (my company) is the sole and exclusive owner of the show world wide in perpetuity. CMT is simply our relationships distributor a division of MTV Networks owned by VIACOM. They have never been on the set or in the edit bay.

The show is funded by my company. As for Don Birchfield, he did not create the show, nor did he ever have any dealings with the network. Don initially had the idea of, the Million Dollar Biker Build Off, a concept which did not work with the television market as he presented it to me. I personally brought Don into the fold on this project with the basis that I felt another TV show was needed in this genre and that a competition was a good concept…but, as you know not original.

I like Don and so I allowed him to be involved, simply my choice. This involvement although useful was limited. He also introduced/recommended the Arizona group of builders. Outside of that, this show it is entirley my baby and conception. This includes entirely created materials, the name, the logo and ALL of the brand integration concepts and ALL negotiations (Geico, Universal Pictures, Time Warner, Patron, Jim Beam, Monster, etc.) and ALL of the network relationships and negotiation and ALL of the business and all of its’ endeavors. The Chopper Challenge LLC is a solely owed company by my partners and I.

The series is solely funded by this company alone. My name is spelled as you see below, not Herriman as it says in your article. Also, my 11 time Emmy Winning Director’s name is, Randy Bond not Bonds. Once again, I appreciate your efforts and respectfully thank you in advance for making these corrections so your article is factual. Also, I am not interested in making Don out to be a small fish or bad guy.. Your article simply has some mis information.

AMERICAN REVOLUTION CHROME SOLUTIONS– Black is the new Chrome, We are proud to be featured in this month’s issue of Hot Bike Magazine about blacking out your bike. We were interviewed by Hot Bike to better understand our black chrome and black nickel processes. Here’s our description of them, the parts we usually do in these finishes, and some customer pictures.

Black processes Almost everything that is black is usually called black chrome. As described in the Hot Bike article Vol. 40, No. 8 2008, there are five major ways to make a part look black. Each has its pros and cons for color, look, and longevity. Black Powder Coating: Everyone has seen this process. This is the process used to paint the 9 spoke and the Street Glide wheels. It can range from glossy to flat, and everything inbetween including the new “wrinkle” black. Powder is shot onto the part and sticks to the part by electrostatic attraction (static). The part is baked in an oven to about 250F for approximately 30 minutes. The powder melts and sticks to the part. The finished product looks like classic wet paint, except that it has a tendency to get “orange peel”, or bumps due to the melting process. Black Paint:

Everyone has seen this too. Most gas tanks are wet painted and then wet sanded. Black can also range from glossy to flat. Paint has orange peel also, but paint is usually wet sanded after to make it look extremely smooth.

Black Anodize:

Any aluminum part can be anodized, and anodizing comes in many colors. Anodizing is a fancy way of saying that you purposely create a layer of rust on the surface of the aluminum (aluminum oxide) and impregnate the rust with a die. You can not anodize steel. When finished, it looks like it was painted, but the layer is very thin. Anodizing tends to fade over time, especially when exposed to sunlight.

Black Chrome:

Black chrome is actually an aerospace process used to plate parts (aluminum or steel) for corrosion protection. It is a very thin, yet durable coating. This is the only true black chrome process. We have started to use black chrome to black out rotors (see attached picture). You can black chrome steel, stainless, brass, and aluminum.

Normally, you should not plate a one-piece rotor (you can plate the center of a floating rotor) because the brake pad will cause the plating to peel off of the stainless steel. Black chrome is so thin that it doesn’t peel, it just wears away. See attached picture of a worn black chromed rotor with a black nickel 9 spoke wheel.

Black Nickel (Night Chrome): I know most of you have heard this before, but it is important part of the black chrome story. When you see a chrome plated part, chrome is invisible, you are actually looking at the bright nickel underneath. This goes for chrome from anyone. Harley-Davidson, Rolls Royce, or American Revolution. Chrome is a metallic clear coat.

Black nickel is actually tinted, or dirty nickel. Basically, it is nickel that also has cobalt and tin plated at the same time (codeposition). Cobalt gives the nickel additional strength and corrosion resistance, and tin gives it the dark tint. It reflects light just like bright nickel, but it has a dark tint.

When we plate Night Chrome parts, we plate them exactly the same way as standard chrome parts. But, instead of the last layer being chrome, we put black nickel on top of the bright nickel layer. Chrome can not stick to black nickel, so black nickel is the very top layer. Since it has all of the normal layers of plating underneath, and is impregnated with cobalt, it has the same corrosion resistance and lifetime as standard chrome. The above picture is a custom machined vrod wheel in standard chrome, and an Xtreme machine custom billet wheel in Night Chrome.

EVIDENCE IN THE CONSTANT GUN LAW CONTROVERSY– A few notable testaments and quotes from the men involved with crafting the Second Amendment:

? ?The great object is that every man be armed and everyone who is able may have a gun.? ? Patrick Henry, in the Virginia Convention on the ratification of the Constitution

? ? to disarm the people – that was the best and most effectual way to enslave them.? ? George Mason

? I ask, sir, what is the militia? It is the whole people, except for a few public officials.? – George Mason

? No Free man shall ever be debarred the use of arms.? ? Thomas Jefferson

? ?Laws that forbid the carrying of arms?disarm only those who are neither inclined nor determined to commit crimes?Such laws make things worse for the assaulted and better for the assailants; they serve rather to encourage than to prevent homicides, for an unarmed man may be attacked with greater confidence than an armed man.? -Thomas Jefferson, quoting Cesare Beccaria.

? ?The best we can hope for concerning the people at large is that they be properly armed.? ? Alexander Hamilton, The Federalist Papers at 184-188

? ?Are we at last brought to such humiliating and debasing degradation, that we cannot be trusted with arms for our defense? Where is the difference between having our arms in possession and under our direction, and having them under the management of Congress? If our defense be the real object of having those arms, in whose hands can they be trusted with more propriety, or equal safety to us, as in our own hands?? ?Patrick Henry

Historical arguments and evidence to support that an individual does not have the right to be armed: Sorry, no credible information on record.

IT’S BREAK TIME–Sorta. I’ve got a set of bad ass Renegade Wheels in the Shop mounted with Avon Tyres and screaming for me to begin mocking up our FXR touring bike. Then Chris Kallas promised to come over and inspire us with one of his illustrations.

Chris Kallas

Ah, but first I must figure out what’s going on with the Salt Shaker. Someone forgot to adjust the front cylinder pushrods and we bent one and marred the other. In the process of setting up our new pushrods from Bennett’s Performance in Long Beach we discovered that the front intake was too short and we ran out of adjustment threads. Then we discovered that the rear intake suffered a similar ailment and we were forced to manufacture two new pushrods. Tricky business. Bennett’s shoots for three threads of adjustment to keep the valve train as tight and secure as possible. They also have a pushrod connection in Oregon who can make and ship custom length pushrods overnight. You send the info and they send you new rods the next day. Here’s the number for Bennett’s (562) 498-1819.

We tried a new kind of rubber cork instead of the O-ring gasket, since Berry Wardlaw of Accurate Engineering, warned us of leaks. They didn’t work at all. The bike finally fired to life. What a sweet beast she is, but during Jeremiah’s test ride it made a terrible clank. So this afternoon she’ll come apart again. I’ll fill you in next week.

Peashooter

If I’m lucky tonight I’ll post a quick history of Harley-Davidson Peashooter singles in the Cantina historical archives. This example is not perfect, but sure is a cool rendition of the classic hillclimber. We are building a Peashooter Bonneville racer which will be the tightest little racer you’ve every seen. Hang on for reports next toward the end of this year.

In the meantime let’s ride.
