Michael Lichter’s 9th Annual Motorcycles as Art Exhibition–Sturgis, SD (July 15, 2009) You’ll want to be sure and catch Michael Lichter’s 9th annual Motorcycles as Art Exhibition during this year’s Sturgis Rally at the Legendary Buffalo Chip. The exhibit titled “Rebel Rousers- Motorcycle Icons that Inspired Us to Ride” is a must-see attraction at this year’s festivities. The exhibition will be open to the public Saturday, August 1st through Friday, August 7th, and admission is free.

“From studio to riding shots of our lifestyle, he is a true motorcycle fan and rider. There is none greater than Michael.” Agrees reputable motorcycle builders and industry insiders, Brian and Laura Klock of Klock Werks located in South Dakota. “He is to be commended for all he gives back to our industry. Don’t miss his show at Sturgis; it’s one of the highlights of the whole week, true art from a true gentleman of the industry!”

Michael Lichter is the authority when it comes to the photography of custom motorcycles and the biker lifestyle and this year’s exhibit “Rebel Rousers-Motorcycle Icons that Inspired us to Ride” showcases his talent for collecting the best examples of motorcycles and art to explore a subject. This is Lichter’s ninth year as curator for the original Sturgis art and motorcycle exhibition. In 2001 Michael was the curator of his first exhibit entitled ‘The Biker Generation’ and since that time has touched on a variety of motorcycle themes during the yearly Sturgis exhibition including “One World Choppers”, “Speed Demons” and “School’s Out”. Lichter has had the opportunity to curate numerous exhibitions, and was recently curator of the Arlen Ness “Awesome Ness” AMA exhibition on display in their Hall of Legends.

This year’s Rebel Rousers exhibit will be showcased in the brand-new 6,500 square foot Lichter Exhibition Hall at the Legendary Buffalo Chip. The exhibition hall, built specifically for Michael’s current and future displays, will accommodate a number of revered images and sacred memorabilia central to the biker culture. The exhibit will focus on the history and celebrated icons of the motorcycle industry through a review of iconic motorcycles, art and movie memorabilia. On display will be numerous motorcycles from film such as the Captain America and Billy Bike from the movie Easy Rider, as well as representations of iconic bikes. These iconic bikes include an early 1960’s Honda Superhawk similar to the one used in Elvis Presley’s film Roustabout and a Superhawk which Robert M. Persig rode in the iconic book Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance. Bikes such as Jesse James’ “Camel Bike” and Indian Larry’s “Wild Child” Biker Build-Off bike will also be featured to represent a more modern influence on motorcycle cultural icons. Memorable images will include posters and stills from such films as The Wild Ones, On Any Sunday and Easy Rider. The exhibit also depicts contemporary images and bikes that will likely be considered iconic to future generations of bikers. The hope is that all who take in the exhibit will see something that speaks to them personally and they say to themselves “That is what inspired me to ride”.

Rebel Rousers would like to thank this year’s sponsors including Interstate Battery, Metzeler Tires, Progressive Insurance, Spectro Oil, Renewable Fuels Association and Baker Drivetrain.

BIKERNET CARTOGRAPHY DEPARTMENT STUDIES STATES–North Carolina: A man in North Carolina had a flat tire, pulled off on the side of the road, and proceeded to put a bouquet of flowers in front of the car and one behind it.

Then he got back in the car to wait. A passerby studied the scene as he drove by and was so curious he turned around and went back. He asked the fellow what the problem was.

The man replied, ‘I have a flat tire.’

The passerby asked, ‘But what’s with the flowers?’

The man responded, ‘When you break down they tell you to put flares in the front and flares in the back. Hey, it don’t make no sense to me neither.’

And this from South Carolina:’You can say what you want about the South, but I ain’t never heard of anyone wanting to retire to the North.

AT LAST, LOWER ALABAMA WEATHER UPDATE–Well, after 9 days of record setting temperatures and a heat index range of 102 to 110+ degrees the weather has finally changed. From being so hot and humid you could barely breathe and riding a motorcycle was not one of the most enjoyable activities to do it has now started raining. In the last two days we have had 5-7 inches of rain in our little corner of the world and there is more yet to come. I guess you take the good with the bad when you live in the ?sub-tropics?.

There is an up side to all the rain. It has cooled things off and my husband and I are getting our maintenance done on the bikes prior to heading off to Sturgis. So there actually is a silver lining behind the clouds.

Coheelee Creek - creek

The weather is still hot and humid with the heat index around 102 degrees and there are occasional showers and thunderstorms however, it is more like the usual summer weather pattern in Lower Alabama instead of a tropical rain forest. And thank goodness we have not had any hurricanes so far this year.

I am getting really excited about our trip. Going to Sturgis will be a grand adventure for me. I look forward to seeing parts of this great country of ours that I have never seen and most definitely never seen from the seat of a motorcycle.

Attached are some photos of another favorite spot of ours. There are very few covered bridges in this neck of the woods, at least not that we have found. But over in the southwest corner of Georgia off highway 62 near the community of Hilton (about two miles from the Alabama line) there is a park called Coheelee Creek. The covered bridge is reported to be the southernmost such structure in existence. You have to travel down a dirt road a little ways to get to the good side of the park. You are not allowed to cross the bridge on vehicles. The paved road on one side leads to a campground near the river. But it has a drop off from the pavement that is not conducive to motorcycle traffic. There is even a little water fall on this creek and for the flatlands around here that is amazing. Sometimes there are a few people around willing to brave the slippery rocks to go for a swim.

You can follow trails down the creek and see the water cascade over the rocks until it ends up just a trickle and an almost stagnant pool. I guess it must go underground and then on to the Chattahoochee river. Where ever it goes the creek is a nice tranquil spot to visit and enjoy the day.

So much for the LA weather. Hopefully, next week, if the universe holds together and all goes well, we will head to Sturgis.

Harley-Davidson deepens cuts as 2Q profit tumbles–NEW YORK -Harley-Davidson Inc. said Thursday it is cutting 1,000 more employees and lowering its motorcycle shipment guidance as quarterly earnings continued to fall due to weaker sales.

The Milwaukee-based maker of the famous heavyweight motorcycles said it plans to cut another 700 hourly and 300 salaried employees from its ranks as it copes with falling demand for its high-end bikes.

“It is obviously a very tough environment for us right now, given the continued weak consumer spending in the overall economy for discretionary purchases,” Harley-Davidson President and CEO Keith Wandell said in a statement.

Harley, the top seller of heavyweight motorcycles, said its second-quarter income fell 91 percent to $19.8 million, or 8 cents per share. That’s down from $222.8 million, or 95 cents per share, in the same period last year.

Revenue declined 27 percent to $1.15 billion from $1.57 billion a year ago.Analysts surveyed by Thomson Reuters forecast 24 cents per share on revenue of $1.15 billion. Its shares rose 31 cents, or 1.8 percent, to $17.80 in morning trading.

Harley has been restructuring since the beginning of the year as it sought to cope with weaker sales. Demand for Harley’s motorcycles, which can run $20,000 or more, have taken a pounding in the recession as consumers pull back on discretionary spending.

Earlier this year, the company had said it planned to cut between 1,400 and 1,500 hourly positions and about 300 salaried positions.

In May, the company said it was weighing its options for its main motorcycle assembly plant in York, Pa. The operations at the facility aren’t competitive, the company said, and a study remains under way to assess whether production will remain in York or move to another U.S. site. It said Thursday it expects to make a decision by the end of the year.

Harley said its worldwide motorcycle sales fell 30 percent during the quarter. That was still better than the industrywide decline in heavyweight motorcycle sales of 48 percent.

Harley now expects to ship between 212,000 and 228,000 motorcycles to its dealers and distributors worldwide in 2009, down between 25 to 30 percent from 2008 shipments levels.Previously, the company expected to ship between 264,000 and 273,000 motorcycles. In the third quarter, it expects to ship between 52,000 and 57,000 bikes.

reduced demand. It said Thursday it will implement production shutdowns at its York and Kansas City, Mo., production facilities, as well as at its powertrain operations at Menomonee Falls and Wauwatosa, Wis.

The Company?s financing arm, Harley-Davidson Financial Services, posted an operating loss of $62.1 million in the second quarter, down from operating income of $37.1 million a year ago. The tight credit markets have weighed on the unit, which has been heavily reliant on the battered securitization market for funding.

GOOD NEWS IN CALIFORNIA– I read the news today. California estimates that they can generate $1.4 billion by legalizing pot. They figure $50.00 per oz. fees plus sales tax. Hum, something about the government in California always bothers me. You know, just the way they look at things. Sure $1.4 billion is a substantial amount but there is as always a much bigger picture. Now I am not a pot advocate. I prefer my intoxicants bottled and imported preferably from Scotland after being allowed to mellow for a few years. Though I will indulge in Mexican imports and a number of brewed hops products. I don’t know the numbers but seems to me that a very large number of the prison population is there because of the use, cultivation and sales of this herb. I am sure that the cost of enforcement and detainment are equal to the number.

Here in Florida, the state will pay a private citizen the value of a pot field for reporting it. These guys make a good living flying around in private aircraft snitching on growers. From the figures I have seen in the news, they evaluate the bust by the joint. Now, lets see, last I heard it cost about $45,000 a year to keep a man incarcerated. I have noticed that a lot of these guys are high profile. Own homes and businesses and pay lots of taxes. All of this needs to be figured into the cost of drug enforcement.

See the figures from the state can be very misleading. The state can generate and save a substantial part of the deficit. They could eliminate a large amount of crime. Not to mention having a huge cash cow grazing in the northern part of the state. Maybe then they would see the light. While they are at it, maybe they could legalize hookers and choppers. As goes California, so goes the country.

Anyways, just a thought.

FROM THE BIKERNET UNIVERSITY EMMISSION SCIENCE WING–Natural gas 21% is like the size of a mule.
Nuclear 19% is like the size of burro.
Hydroelectricity 6% is like the size of a good sized dog.
Wind 1% is like the size of a pigeon.

The world is projected to produce around 40,000 million tons of CO2 each year. The goal of having the USA generating 20% power by wind in 2020 would cut the CO2 emissions by 170 million tons. This is less than 0.5% of the total world-wide emissions.

China built more coal generation plants in 2007 that Great Britain in it total inventory.

Research shows when people have access to electricity they tend to live longer, are more likely to survive childhood, drink cleaner water, eat better and are better educated. For an example: In Africa women carry an average of 20 kilograms (44 pounds) of wood each day 5 kilometers (3.1 miles) each day to burn for fuel.

DR. WEIL FINDING FROM BIKERNET MEDICAL CENTER, Craving Chips? Try This Healthy Snack Alternative– One of the healthiest changes you can make in your diet is to incorporate whole soy foods on a regular basis. Soy is rich in protein, iron and compounds called isoflavones, which may have protective effects against hormone-driven cancers such as prostate cancer in men and breast cancer in women. Soy also helps protect your heart.

Roasted soybeans, known as “soy nuts,” are a great way to get the health benefits of soy while satisfying almost any snack craving. A one-ounce serving (about one-quarter of a cup) amounts to about 120 calories, 10 grams of protein, six grams of fiber, and only four grams of fat – three of them unsaturated.

Roasted soy nuts come in sweet and spicy flavors, as well as regular salted and unsalted varieties. Be aware that some of the flavored varieties may have more calories or fat – so read the labels carefully. For more info go to DrWeil.com.
