BIKERNET PRE-STURGIS THURSDAY NEWS BEGINS

endingshot

Hey,

I had some highly profound statements boiling around in my mind the other day, but I lost them amidst the scattered turmoil of life. Besides what the hell can you believe these days? Not much. So, here’s a quote from Geno’s Old Skool Rods latest issue:

Despite the mantra of the clueless experts on the Evening News for Dummies, General Motors, Ford and Chrysler built the cars, trucks, and SUVs that people wanted to buy. That’s how the market works. That’s also why the seemingly all-knowing Toyota and Nissan introduced full-sized trucks and SUVs to the American market. They were jumping onto the Big Three’s collective force-feed of unwanted vehicles. They were trying to capitalize on selling Americans what they wanted to buy.

How about this quote from the book, “Shop Class and Soulcraft:” I mean to clarify the origins of, and thereby interrogate, those assumptions that lull us into accepting as inevitable, or even desirable, our increasing manual disengagement. Holy shit. Is that a mouthful? Let’s hit the news and ponder the fate of life as we once knew it, simple and tough as masterlinks pounded into hot chains with bare hands.

MISSOURI GOVERNOR VETOES HELMET REPEAL BILL

As most bikers across America were celebrating Independence Day weekend, riders in Missouri were reeling from their governor?s veto of a bill to partially repeal the Show-Me state?s 42-year old mandatory helmet law to allow freedom of choice for adult motorcyclists. Despite overwhelming approval from both the State Senate and House earlier this summer, on July 2nd, Gov. Jay Nixon vetoed Senate Bill 202, denying riders 21 and older the right to ride without a helmet. In 30 other states, most adult motorcyclists have the right to make wearing a helmet a personal choice.

The legislation also would have prohibited insurance companies from reducing claims from injured motorcycle riders, deeming them at-fault solely on the basis that a motorcycle is a hazardous vehicle.

In 1999, Freedom of the Road Riders for Missouri (FORR-MO) and other concerned riders and groups succeeded in lobbying a helmet repeal bill through the legislature and onto the desk of then-Gov. Mel Carnahan, who vetoed it.

“It’s a basic freedom of choice,” said FORR-MO chairman Mark Chapman, ?Another human being should be not be able to make a choice for someone else.”

BIKERNET VINCENT ARCHIVES DISCOVERED– Found this today browsing the internet. it’s a Vincent motor from a black shadow that’s being turned into a speed racer. Looks a bit like a guy saw a confederate fighter but didn’t have 150k to blow on one so he built this instead.

It’s supposed to be in the workshop of a “vintage specialist” named Justin Kell in Hollywood.

?It was found in the nevada desert after being hidden since the 1970s,? said Justin, ?I?ll be ripping it apart as soon as we determine the history and decide which way to take the rebuild. it?s going to be a huge rebuild, but a very cool project to do.?

I believe where it’s being built is at a place called “glory”.

Might make a killer story for bikernet.

About Justin Kell:

Justin Kell may not be an A-list actor, nor a famous screenwriter or director, but if you’ve seen the latest Indiana Jones feature or Quentin Tarantino’s Hell Ride, you’ve seen his work. Kell was the motorcycle coordinator for both films, as well as the upcoming Star Trek movie. As such, he had the enviable task of building, renting and maintaining the motorcycles for each film.

For Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, Harley-Davidson supplied Kell and his crew at Rank and File Motorcycles with five Softail Springer Classics, which he had six weeks to rebuild to fit the movie’s 1957 setting. “Ideally, we would like to have used period bikes,” says Kell, “but due to product-placement deals and safety issues, we had to go with new bikes.” For getting the job done, Kell credits his two main co-workers: Cretins M.C. member Eric Orr and Paul Greenstein, L.A.’s resident Indian expert “for the under-70 set.”

The fact that Kell also owns his own brick-and-mortar retail shop has earned him his movie-industry nickname, “Storefront.” As owner of Glory Sales and Service in Hollywood, a one-stop shop for all of your Rocker needs, Kell, 38, has rebuilt a lot of vintage bikes, many for celebrity clients. Pressed to name names, he prefers to respect his customers’ anonymity. “Nah, I don’t do that,” he says. “That’s why this place isn’t littered with Polaroids of me with Famous Guy A or Famous Guy B.”

But Kell wasn’t always living the Hollywood dream. Back in his native Baltimore he worked as a plasterer, and after he moved to L.A. in ’98 worked for an antiques dealer. Not long after he decided to start his own shop, and in February 2000 opened the doors to Glory’s showroom on Hollywood Boulevard, where it still stands today. “The first day we had three bikes, a couple of couches, some neon signs and not much else,” remembers Kell. “Within six months we were selling Davida helmets and more bikes. It turned into a sort of lifestyle shop.”

Hypnotherapy to Quit Smoking?–Tobacco is the most addictive drug in common usage in the world, and nicotine is one of the strongest stimulants known. It is difficult to quit smoking – but it is possible. Thousands of people quit each year, and are an inspiration to those who want to stop. There are a number of ways to quit, including cold turkey, acupuncture, or using nicotine patches or gum.

Hypnotherapy is another option. Steve Gurgevich, Ph.D., a DrWeil.com expert, is an experienced hypnotherapist who has studied smoking cessation through hypnosis. He says that it takes just three days to get over the physical symptoms of nicotine withdrawal – think of it as a long weekend. The more difficult part is addressing the habitual nature of the act of smoking. According to Dr. Gurgevich, patients have to be truly motivated to quit smoking if they expect hypnotherapy to work. The habit will not be eradicated in one session.

For more smoking cessation information, consider “Dr. Gurgevich’s Amazing Hypnotic Tonic,” available in our Marketplace. This set of smoking cessation CDs may help you quit smoking – and improve your health and life.

Bulldog Bash 23 – Entertainment preview– This year?s Bulldog Bash WILL go ahead as planned after Stratford Council told the organizers that the latest bid by Warwickshire assistant chief constable Bill Holland to have the event?s license reviewed or revoked came too late to affect next month?s show. ?We?re delighted by the news,? said a spokesman ?though we were always confident the bash would happen. We will continue to fight Mr Holland?s unjustified attempts to review the licence.?

Legendary British rockers Mot?rhead and UFO have been confirmed to headline the 23rd annual Bulldog Bash, which takes place August 6th, 7th 8th, & 9th at the festival’s usual site at Shakespeare County Raceway, Long Marston, near Stratford On Avon, Warwickshire.

Live Music

Mot?rhead?s searing live set on Saturday August 8th will be the closing highlight of a weekend of hard rock heaven, headlined on Friday August 7th by UFO and Oliver/Dawson SAXON, with a fantastic line-up of established support acts on the main stage, complemented by a host of exciting up-and-comers on the second, Area81 Rock Club stage.

Fronted by the iconic Lemmy Kilmister, Mot?rhead, one of rock history?s most pivotal bands, have spent the last few decades bringing the house down with their blistering, blitzkrieg punk-metal juggernaut of a live show since their inception in 1975. If there is one musician who has succeeded in transporting the zeitgeist of the founder days of rock ?n? roll to the year 2009, it?s got to be Lemmy. He lives his philosophy uncompromisingly, his bourbon-soaked skin featuring the unambiguous tattoo that sums up his life like no other motto:?Born to lose ? live to win?.

RIGHT TO REPAIR LEGISLATION INTRODUCED–Congressman Edolphus “Ed” Towns (D-NY), along with Anna Eshoo (D-CA) andGeorge Miller (D-CA), has reintroduced legislation that would make itillegal for vehicle manufacturers to withhold information necessary todiagnose, service or repair motor vehicles. Currently vehicle owners areforced to return to the dealership network to have problems diagnosed thatthe over-the-counter aftermarket code readers cannot read. HR 2057, theMotor Vehicle Owners’ Right to Repair Act (Right to Repair), has 31cosponsors to date.

The Motorcycle Riders Foundation (MRF) strongly supports Right to Repair, and urges Congress to swiftly pass this legislation in order to safeguardindividual vehicle ownership rights today and in the future.

“We have formally committed our support to Right to Repair because webelieve that consumers are entitled to choose how their motorcycles, carsand other type of vehicles are maintained or upgraded. The point of Rightto Repair is to protect the freedom of American consumers to choose howthey take care of their vehicles, be it in their driveways or at trustedrepair facilities, and to ensure that they have access to all theinformation required to complete necessary service and repairs,” said JeffHennie, MRF Vice President of Government Relations.

A recent letter to the editor from the MRF generated hundreds of articlesin publications across the country signaling a resounding level of supportfrom the vehicle operating public. “As the economy continues to besluggish, people are looking at cost cutting, and getting vehiclemaintenance at a premium dealership is high on their list of cuts. Alsoconsider the recent forced government closure of dealerships, not tomention the desire to support small business. All these factors point tothe need for this legislation,” Hennie added.

Vehicles, including motorcycles, are becoming increasingly complex withthe addition of more and more computer technology, which will become moreand more sophisticated and complex in the future. Ready access to accurateservice and repair information from the manufacturers is essential to thesafety and well being of the entire American motoring public.

The MRF encourages all motorcyclists to visit www.righttorepair.org tosend a letter to each of their congressional representatives, urging themto support the Right to Repair Act by adding their names to the growinglist of co-sponsors.

Madrid?s Team Sable takes affiliate win at Faro Bike Rally–THIS year saw in excess of 20,000 riders gather for the 28th annual Moto Clube Faro Rally on Portugal’s southern Algarve coast, and the 18th Custom Bike Show that organizers have staged.

By far the biggest motorcycle event in Portugal, the ‘Faro Rally’ is one of the largest such events in Europe as a whole and attracts riders from literally all over the continent for four days of music and riding.

This was the second time the bike show had been affiliated to the Official World Championship of Custom Bike Building, and the judging jury (custom bike journalists from around Europe) chose “The Paisa” by Team Sable of Madrid, Spain, as winner of the Radical Custom class, Best in Show, and winner of the AMD World Championship Affiliate prize.

This means that “The Paisa” will be seen competing at the 7th annual World Championship at Sturgis, Sd., in August 2010.First seen when it scored a respectable 14th place in the 2008 European Championship, and again when it was one of the selected bikes for the ‘Mad Builders’ Show at Barcelona’s MotOH! Expo in May last year, it certainly is a “radical” approach to what can be achieved with a 1200cc Sportster engine!

SUGAR BEAR AND MICHAEL LICHTER CELEBRATED BY BROKEN SPOKE CAMPGROUND–Forty Years of Hard Work Deserves a Great Party!

Sturgis, SD: On Sunday, August 2nd, the Broken Spoke Saloon & Campground will honor and celebrate two undeniable innovators in the motorcycle industry on the Sugar Bear/Michael Lichter Ride. The ride is FREE and open to the public and departs at 3:00pm from the Broken Spoke Campground on 79 North, just in the shadows of Bear Butte.

The goal of the ride is to honor and celebrate two very important, hard-working figures in the motorcycle industry ? show them a good time, and give the public a once-in-a-lifetime to ride with the icons of our industry. The Broken Spoke Saloon is the place where fans can get up close and personal with industry greats. ?We all read about history, but this is your chance make motorcycle history,? Broken Spoke Saloon owner Jay Allen urges, ?Do not miss this ride!?

Michael-Lichter

mike lichter

Photographer Michael Lichter has traveled all over the world, capturing the spirit of motorcycles and the people who ride them in every photograph he takes. The ten ?coffee-table? books with his name on the cover include two on Sturgis, large format books on choppers, and individual books on builders Arlen Ness, Billy Lane and Indian Larry. Since the early Seventies, Michael has been exhibiting his photography in public institutions including solo shows at galleries and museums worldwide. Michael?s reputation as a motorcycling photographer has led to him being featured in photography, motorcycling and general interest magazines as well as a number of television shows. His photos can be viewed and purchased at: www.lichterphoto.com.

Builder Sugar Bear founded Sugar Bear Choppers in 1971 with the intent to produce street rideable choppers and products, not show creations. The belief that all bikes were meant to have scrapes, chips, burnt pipes, dents, style, and smiles-per-miles has always been the shop’s aim. Sugar Bear?s diligent research and development and lifelong commitment to quality enabled him to create his signature Springer with long forks, zero flop, smooth ride (no pogo), and handling thought only to be available for much shorter forks ? just ask the rider who has one! His work can be found at: www.sugarbearchoppers.com

The festivities will begin at the Broken Spoke Campground at 1:00pm with a Kick-off Pool Party ? including a bikini contest, male pole dancing, German stein holding and more. Then at 3:00, the bikes will depart for the 25-mile ride (traveling away from the hustle of Sturgis) to a real working ranch. Once there, the ranch owners grill up lunch and serve ice cold beverages. As far as activities ? you never know what might be planned at the ranch ? there are horses to ride, barrel racing (with horses and bikes!), wagon rides, you might even find yourself branding a spring calf ? anything is possible and it?s guaranteed to be a blast. As photojournalist Colleen Swartz puts it, ?I can say that these rides are the best thing I do during all of Sturgis. It is amazing.?

Then it?s back to the Spoke for food, music, beer and more good times — including the grand opening celebration of the Broken Spoke Legends art gallery, located on the 2nd floor of the Broken Spoke Saloon on 79North.

Join the Broken Spoke Saloon & Campground for a fantastic day of activities to celebrate the motorcycle and two innovators who have made such an impact on our passion.

The Broken Spoke Saloon & Campground is located on 79 North in Sturgis, just past Bear Butte State Park. The 600-acre campground complex ? complete with swimming pool, hot tubs, ride through bar and more – has extended it?s $99/person camping rates through the 69th Sturgis Rally and has tent camping and RV spots still available. The Campground also welcomes the Vietnam Veteran?s Moving Wall to Sturgis and will host an Opening Ceremony on August 1st. Broken Spoke will be running a FREE ?Spoke 2 Spoke? shuttle between the Broken Spoke Saloon & Campground on North 79 and the ?Original? Broken Spoke Saloon on Lazelle Street downtown Sturgis. More info can be found at: www.BrokenSpokeCampground.com and Campground reservations can be made for $99 by calling 8-Spoke-On-79 (877-653-6679).
