Here are some pics of Iacovos and I. We went 1050+ miles in 22 hours. I am leaving to do it again at 2am today. Wish me luck.

RUSTY” IRON BUTT CHALLANGE? — Matt Olsen, the Antique Motorcycle Club of America’s Youth Coordinator, is planning on riding his 1936 Harley Davidson EL from South Dakota to the AMA Vintage Days to participate in the AMA’s 85th anniversary parade.

The event in Lexington Ohio, takes place from July 24th through July 26th. The weekend’s festivities include vintage racing, North America’s largest swapmeet, bike shows, demo rides and more.

matt olsen

What makes Matt’s trip so unusual is that he and his passenger, Mara Butler, plan on riding the 1,100 miles in 24 hours with no chase vehicle or support team. “We would love to qualify for the Iron Butt Association Saddle Sore 1,000 award,” Matt stated. “In order to qualify for an IBA Saddle Sore 1,000 award, you have to ride at least 1,000 miles in 24 hours. And we want to do it on a 71 year old Harley.”

“We want to shatter the general motorcycling public’s perception that the old and collectible motorcycles belong in museums, or that they can’t be ridden.” Matt explained. “I figure this is a good opportunity to attempt my first Iron Butt Run and participate in the AMA Vintage Days event while demonstrating the durability and reliability of my 73 year old motorcycle.” If Matt and Mara succeed, Matt’s 36 EL will be the oldest Harley to qualify for an IBA award.

matt engine

If you can’t make it to the AMA Vintage Days event on July 25th and 26th to meet Matt and Mara, you can check in on their progress at www.oldbikesinsd.blogspot.com, Mara will be doing updates along the 1100 mile trip at every gas stop.

Stickers

FREE ?Watch for Motorcycles? Bumper Stickers AvailableHelp us save LIVES– As part of Hupy and Abraham?s efforts to increase awareness of motorcycles on the road, we have come up with another facet to our ?Watch for Motorcycles? campaign. We have reached over 4 million people with full-page newspaper ads in the last three years. We have added electronic billboards, airplane banners and television messages.

We are now providing fee of charge, black, orange and white bumper stickers that say ?Watch for Motorcycles? (see attachment). This is another reminder to motorists that they must be careful and specifically look for motorcycles as well as manage their vehicle appropriately when motorcycles have the right-of-way.

Stickers 001

In addition to bumper stickers, we have stickers that can be placed on envelopes or letters that carry the ?Watch for Motorcycles? message (see attachment). The stickers are in black, orange and white. We also have a version available in yellow and black that says ?ABATE of Wisconsin? and a generic orange and black sticker.

If you wish to receive any of these or be added to our Biker Newsbrief mailing list, please send an e-mail to pan@mfhupy.com and indicate which stickers you would like.

H-D

H-D to Shut Down Production for 14 Weeks–Harley-Davidson plans production shutdowns and line rate adjustments at powertrain operations in Menomonee Falls and Wauwatosa, Wis., and at motorcycle assembly operations in York, Pa., and Kansas City, Mo.

The shutdowns and line rate adjustments are part of the OEM’s plan to cut production by 25 to 30 percent and lay off up to 1,000 workers in an effort to reduce output, match demand and shrink inventories.

Sportster and V-Rod motorcycle final assembly operations and V-Rod motorcycle powertrain production in Kansas City, and production of Sportster motorcycle powertrains in Wauwatosa will be shut down for approximately 14 weeks in 2009, including the entire fourth quarter. The company anticipates that other production operations will be shut down for a total of approximately five weeks over the rest of 2009.

“When it comes to protecting and enhancing the brand, managing supply in line with demand is one of the most important things we can do,” says H-D President and CEO Keith Wandell. “We’ve got a great lineup of motorcycles and one of our top priorities is to reduce complexity and improve efficiency throughout our product development and manufacturing processes.”

H-D earlier this year announced plans to consolidate its two Milwaukee-area powertrain (engine and transmission) plants into one facility; consolidate paint and frame operations at its York facilities into one plant; and close its Franklin parts and accessories distribution center and consolidate those operations with general merchandise distribution through a third-party logistics company. Also, in April, the OEM completed the transition of its U.S. transportation fleet operations to a third-party provider as part of its restructuring initiatives.

Since the announcement of the original consolidation plans, Harley-Davidson has determined that the company’s York operations are not currently competitive or sustainable.

H-D has undertaken a “two path” study to determine whether major, additional restructuring at York can achieve cost and efficiency targets to make the operations viable, or alternatively, whether the company will relocate the York operations to another U.S. location.

H-D leadership expects to make a decision on the status of the York operations later this year.

MILLION MILE HISTORIC HARLEY-DAVIDSON TO BE DONATED TO STURGIS MOTORCYCLE MUSEUM–The Sturgis Motorcycle Museum & Hall of Fame will be holding a News Conference on Tuesday, June 28, 2009 at 1 p.m. The news conference will feature former Wisconsin State Senator Dave Zien, who?s ?Million Mile Motorcycle? will be dedicated.

Zien, who is riding to Sturgis directly from the completion of a round trip journey from Key West, Florida to Prudhoe Bay Alaska and back to Key West will meet Tony ?Pan? The two will ride to Sturgis for the opening of the new exhibit. Zien?s Florida to Alaska and back trip netted over 11,000 miles on the new 2009 Harley-Davidson Road Glide, which Dave picked up on April 6, 2009 at the Harley-Davidson Juneau Avenue facility in Milwaukee. He had over 20,000 miles on the bike when he started out from Key West on July 4, 2009. By the time he returns from Sturgis, Zien will have over 44,000 miles on the new motorcycle.

Gilroy-era Indian CEO Pleads Guilty in Racketeering Case–The Gilroy Dispatch is reporting that Gilroy-era Indian Motorcycle CEO Rey Sotelo has pleaded guilty to conspiracy to traffic stolen motorcycles parts in a federal racketeering case.

Sotelo faces a maximum sentence of up to five years in prison and a fine of up to $250,000. Defense attorney Albie Jachimowicz says that said he expects Sotelo to serve six months or less of home detention.

Sotelo was arrested in July 2008 on federal charges of conspiring with an alleged Northern California chop shop to falsify the paperwork of a bike being sent to Sweden.

Federal prosecutors had alleged that Sotelo assisted two others in the exportation of the Harley-Davidson by supplying false Manufacture Statements of Origin and a false VIN.

Sotelo’s arrest was part of wider case against Robert and Brent Holloway, the father and son co-owners of Road Dog Cycles in Denair, Calif., in which they were charged with racketeering, witness tampering, extortion, making violent threats and trafficking in stolen parts.

There are eight other defendants in the case that centers around the Holloway’s shop and their relationship with a number of outlaw motorcycle clubs, including the Hell’s Angels and the Alky Haulers.

Robert Holloway and a number of the other defendants have law enforcement backgrounds, including two men actively employed by the Stanislaus County sheriff’s department charged with making false statements about the case while being questioned by federal investigators.

The federal indictment alleged that Road Dog Cycles was a gathering place and a commercial supplier for the clubs. In addition to operating as the owners of a chop shop and in trafficking in stolen parts and motorcycles, the filing said that the defendants protected their enterprise through intimidation, threats of violence, violence and assaults.

Sotelo’s role in the operation, the indictment shows, was limited to the efforts to alter the VIN and conceal the true manufacturer of the motorcycle being shipped overseas.

VICTORY LOGO

POLARIS Q2 Sales Drop 24%–Polaris Industries’ sales for its second quarter ended June 30 totaled $345.9 million, a decrease of 24 percent from second quarter 2008 sales of $455.7 million. The company expects sales for the full year 2009 to be 20 percent to 25 percent lower than sales of $1.948 billion posted in 2008.

Polaris leadership says it expects year-end sales of motorcycles to be down 40 to 50 percent compared to last year; off-road vehicle sales to be down 21 to 25 percent; parts, garments & accessories (PG&A) to be down 13 to 17 percent; and snowmobile sales to be down 15 to 20 percent.

“Our outlook for the North American economy remains weak,” says Scott Wine, CEO, Polaris Industries. “Our expectations for 2009 remain unchanged and we expect our core markets to remain very challenging.”

VICTORY

Sales of Victory motorcycles to dealers decreased 55 percent during the second quarter of 2009 when compared to the same period in 2008. Polaris says the decrease reflects the planned reduction in shipments of Victory motorcycles to dealers in North America during the quarter in response to dealers’ efforts to further reduce their inventory levels as well as the weakening motorcycle industry retail sales environment.

Although dealer inventory levels are 24 percent lower at the end of the second quarter 2009 than at the end of the second quarter 2008, further reductions are needed given the weak motorcycle industry retail sales environment, the OEM says.

OFF-ROAD VEHICLES

Sales of ATVs and side-by-side vehicles to dealers during the second quarter 2009 decreased 25 percent from the second quarter 2008. Polaris says the decrease reflects the continued weakness in the consumer retail environment, as dealers continued to reduce core ATV orders in an effort to reduce inventory levels. As a result, ATV dealer inventory levels in North America finished 18 percent lower at the end of the second quarter 2009 than at the end of the second quarter 2008.Although side-by-side retail sales were also lower during the second quarter 2009 compared to the second quarter 2008, resulting in lower shipments of the vehicles, the decline was less than the core ATV retail declines. The OEM says dealer inventories for side-by-side vehicles are higher than a year ago, but lower than at the end of the first quarter 2009.

PG&A

PG&A sales decreased 13 percent during the second quarter 2009 compared to the same period of last year, driven primarily by the lower retail sales of Polaris vehicles during the second quarter 2009.

SNOWMOBILE

Snowmobile sales totaled $7.4 million for the 2009 second quarter compared to $6.0 million for the second quarter of 2008. The second quarter is historically a seasonally low quarter for snowmobile shipments, as deliveries to dealers ramp up in the second half of the calendar year.

DEALER RELATIONS

Polaris leadership says it is watching dealer health closely so the OEM can respond as appropriate.

“Maintaining the strength of our dealers is a top priority,” Wine says, adding: “We continue to drive down dealer inventory, with a 10 percent reduction from the previous quarter and an eight percent reduction from the second quarter of 2008. But inventory reduction is not the only area where we are working closely with our dealers. We are reducing the overall floorplan receivables and have even accelerated hold-back payments in the quarter to help with their cash-flow.

“Access to wholesale financing remains solid, and losses across our network remain low, both in receivables and in actual dealer count. We have seen dealer repossessions drop from the spike we saw in the fourth quarter of last year, and still expect the overall decrease in dealers in 2009 to be approximately 5 percent, which is in line with our historical annual turnover.”

The objective to Polaris’ recently introduced Maximum Velocity Program (MVP) is for dealers to continue to grow market share while operating with lower levels of inventory.

SPECIAL EDITION ROAD RAGE M-25 MODEL–Talk about ‘road rage’! Just what a motorcyclist needs for riding on I-5. Designed as an equalizer. Inconceivable and unpredictable lane changes and other traffic related anomalies perpetrated by tire losing, cell phone using SUV driving morons in California (and elsewhere) on the rest of us.

The above pictured machine was designed for that purpose. Each mini gun fires at a rate of 3000 rounds per minute (6000 total). During initial test and evaluation it was demonstrated that a single 2 second burst would and did blow a 40 foot RV with tow car clean off the road leaving an open and unobstructed route ahead. It will vaporize an SUV in seconds! Tests further indicated that after two or three RV’s/SUV’s in a row were eliminated, or “friggin smoked”, others voluntarily pulled off the road and thus became a “non threat”.

ACCIDENT STATS THAT WILL FRY YOUR BRAIN–An update of the Motorcycle Accident In-Depth Study of 921 accidents investigated from 1999-2000 in five sampling areas located in France, Germany, Italy, Netherlands and Spain. Among other things, the European study found that just over 50% of the motorcycle accidents in the subject cities were caused by CAR drivers, with 69% of those resulting from ?perception failure,? which can include not seeing the rider, misjudging distances and space on the road.

CAN YOU FATHOM THE THOUGHT: THEY CAN’T SEE US, BUT THEY WANT TO REQUIRE US TO BE QUIET…SOUND IS NOT OKAY, BUT INJURIES ARE.

– Wear protective gear. The 921 accidents in the study resulted in 3,417 injuries — 31.8% of which were to the lower extremities, 24.3% to the upper extremities and 18.4% to the head.

ANOTHER DISTURBING FACT: HELMETS CAN CAUSE YOU TO SUSTAIN 55 PERCENT OF THE PROJECTED INJURIES AND ONLY PROTECT YOU IN 18 PERCENT. IN ADDITION, A PROPORTION OF NECK INJURIES ARE CAUSE BY HELMETS. AND THEY STILL SEE HELMETS AS THE PANACEA.
