OIL CHANGE MYTH CRUSHED–Needing to change your car?s oil at 3,000 miles is a myth. Many cars today can go longer without affecting engine wear. Automakers are regularly recommending oil changes at 5,000, 7,000 or even 10,000 miles based on driving conditions.

Yet research conducted by the California Integrated Waste Management Board (CIWMB) shows that nearly three-quarters of Californian drivers change their motor oil more often than automaker recommendations. Following the 3,000 mile myth generates millions of gallons of waste oil every year which can pollute California?s natural resources.

Do your part to help keep our world green. Always check your vehicle?s user manual for guidelines on when to change your oil. It will save you money, time and help the environment too. And that?s a change we can all get behind.

BIKERNET UNIVERSITY RELEASES LIFE STUDY–On the first day, God created the dog and said: ‘Sit all day by the door of your house and bark at anyone who comes inor walks past. For this, I will give you a life span of twenty years.’

The dog said: ‘That’s a long time to be barking. How about only tenyears and I’ll give you back the other ten?’

So God agreed.

On the second day, God created the monkey and said: ‘Entertain people,do tricks, and make them laugh. For this, I’ll give you a twenty-yearlife span.’

The monkey said: ‘Monkey tricks for twenty years? That’s a pretty longtime to perform. How about I give you back ten like the Dog did?’ And God agreed.

On the third day, God created the cow and said: ‘You must go into the field with the farmer all day long and sufferunder the sun, have calves and give milk to support the farmer’s family. For this, I will give you a life span of sixty years.’

The cow said: ‘That’s kind of a tough life you want me to live forsixty years. How about twenty and I’ll give back the other forty?’

And God agreed again.

On the fourth day, God created man and said: ‘Eat, sleep, play, marry and enjoy your life. For this, I’ll give youtwenty years.’

But man said: ‘Only twenty years? Could you possibly give me my twenty, the forty the cow gave back, the ten the monkey gave back, and the tenthe dog gave back; that makes eighty, okay?’

‘Okay,’ said God, ‘You asked for it.’

So that is why for our first twenty years we eat, sleep, play and enjoyourselves. For the next forty years we slave in the sun to support ourfamily. For the next ten years we do monkey tricks to entertain thegrandchildren. And for the last ten years we sit on the front porch andbark at everyone.

Life has now been explained to you.

NEW AFFILIATE EVENT: FARO RALLY, PORTUGAL, JOINS CHAMPIONSHIP PROGRAM– The annual rally organized by Moto Clube de Faro, in Portugal, is the latest event to join the Affiliate program of the Official World Championship of Custom Bike Building.Taking place over July 17-20, the rally is now into its 27th year, making it one of the oldest such events in Europe. The rally ran for 10 years before the first custom show was staged. The first event simply consisted of bikes in a field, but that was soon to change with the formation of a special team within the Moto Clube to organize and improve the show each year.

Such was the success of the organizing team that, 10 years after that first custom show, an additional area was added. Known as ‘Custom Farm’, it is specifically for professional builders to showcase their latest builds and has proved to be a major attraction, especially among editors of European custom bike magazines looking for potential feature bikes – such is the quality of machinery on display. Now that it has become an Affiliate event, builders entering this year’s show will have the opportunity to win a travel expenses contribution to go to the World Championship of Custom Bike Building in Sturgis in 2009. With such a major prize on offer, the standard of bikes entered and on display is expected to be even higher than ever before.

To present a bike for consideration for entry, please email coolcat@clix.pt, attaching at least two clear photographs of the bike. Bikes may also be presented at the event itself, up to 2pm on July 19.

Bikes must run and be ridden into the showground, and from the showground to the stage for the prize-giving ceremony, to be eligible for prizes.

CATSKILL, NY CLOSES DOWN FOR VINTAGE BIKERS– The town of Catskill, NY closed down Main Street today to mark the 100th anniversary of the first motorcycle endurance race originally sopnsered by Walter Davidson of Motor Company fame held this day in 1908.

Over 100 vintage motorcycles participated in the event marking the opening this weekend of the Antique Motorcycle Club of America?s Grand National Show and Swap Meet to be held at the Dutchess County fairgrounds in Rhinebeck, NY.

Acting as grand Marshal was Walter Davidson?s grand daughter Jean, escorted by her two sons Jon and Peter who rode in on their vintage bikes for this weekends event.

Excited to be a part of the festivities, this was my first outing since my accident back in February. I?ll also be hosting the ?Period Modified Bike Show? in conjunction with the AMCA at the event this Sunday, so if you?re in the area, be sure to stop by and see the rare collection of bikes dating from 1887 to 1973.Hope to see you there.

TIME FOR LOCKDOWN–And a stiff Jack Daniels. I’m headed to a Hamster Funeral for Used Car Craig. I’m riding out with Mike Stevenson and Dr. Hamster on his 20 year old dresser with over 200,000 miles on the clock. It still runs like a top. Consequently this ending will be short, like a postcard to mom after I landed in party-time New Orleans.

shop shot

Next week will be packed with action, including hot fiction, a tech from Steve Storz on racing mods for Sportsters, a Diablo Run story (I need Caleb’s shots), and several bike features. Plus we’ll have another Root Beer build story, info on the new Indians and more legislative news. Don’t forget to call the Governor of Michigan and vote for freedom. What else is there, goddamnit?

Ride Forever,
