ROLLING THUNDER REPORT–Just got home from Washington DC after riding in the Rolling Thunder Parade on Sunday and this is what I found in my email. Kind of makes me wonder what the sacrifice of all those lives really means to this administration. As my dad always said, “talk is cheap, it’s what you do that matters, not what you say you’ll do.”
Dad rode his Indian in the ’30s until he shipped out for England to as he put it, “to kill Germans.” I wish he could have lived to see the dedication of the WWII Memorial. If he had been alive today I’ll bet he would have asked me to put him on the back of my Road Glide and take him along with me so he could ride in Rolling Thunder too.
The town was full of Vietnam Vets and WWII vets which made this year’s parade even more poignant. To share the city with those men from both World War II and Vietnam was an honor and a memory that will be with me as long as I live.

BUSH THANKS VETERANS THEN CUTS THEIR HEALTH CARE–President Bush spent the Memorial Day weekend thanking the nation’s veterans for their service, saying “we acknowledge the debt [we owe them] by showing our respect and gratitude.” Yet, his rhetoric came just hours after the Bush Administration announced new plans to slash veterans health care funding if it returns to power in 2005.
Late last week, the Administration released a memo detailing a plan to cut $1 billion from the Veterans Administration in the first budget of its second term. The cut would come even after the White House has tried to close veterans hospitals throughout the country, and has proposed veterans health care budgets that have been criticized by veterans groups and the President’s own Veterans Affairs secretary. It also comes after the president decided to cut off 164,000 veterans from their existing prescription drug coverage, and threatened to veto any bill that would allow veterans to receive both the military pension they were promised, and any disability compensation to which they are entitled.
HOLD ON, GODDAMNIT–Here’s some facts for people who care about veterans benefits:
Annenberg Public Policy Center: Kerry?s Claims About Veterans Health Cuts Are Not True. The University of Pennsylvania?s Annenberg Center stated in a FactCheck, “Funding for veterans is going up twice as fast under Bush as it did under Clinton. And the number of veterans getting health benefits is going up 25% under Bush?s budgets. That?s hardly a cut. ? FactCheck.org twice contacted the Kerry campaign asking how he justified his claim that the VA budget is being cut, but we?ve received no response.” (FactCheck.org Website, www.factcheck.org/article.aspx?docid=144 , Accessed 2/18/04)
Increased VA Funding. The President?s FY 2005 budget proposes to increase funding for the Department of Veterans Affairs to $68 billion from the 2001 level of $48 billion. The President?s budget requests $29.5 billion for VA?s medical care for next year, more that 40 percent above the 2001 level. The past four straight VA budget increases have provided more than a 40 percent increase in VA health care alone since 2001– enabling a million more patients to receive treatment.

IRON AND LACE CALENDAR BUILDERS–I am really looking forward to having all of you back with us (as well as some newcomers) at this year’s LA Calendar Motorcycle Show Weekend July 17-18th.
I am putting together a couple of new features for the Show that will feature the great builders we will have with us. The should add a lot of fun, camaraderie among everyone, and additional press / media exposure to the event weekend
IRON & LACE Calendar Builders Night PartySaturday the 17th 9pm-12. The Queen Mary Observation Lounge BarJesse Rooke suggested this as a get together and unwinding for the builders. Our last Iron & Lace Party at Barfly in Hollywood last November was a huge success, and the Saturday night of the Show Weekend aboard the Queen Mary is a natural. I’m looking forward to having all of you and the media join us there.
Iron & Lace Builders Seminars, Saturday and Sunday afternoonI am setting up a small canopy and seating area in the middle of the Show Grounds and we will feature Calendar Builder Seminars twice a day. This will give spectators more reasons to spend the entire day at the show, put builders in more contact with potential customers, and give the motorcycle media additional opportunities for coverage and content at the Show.
