SEMA banner

California Proposes to Enhance Vehicle Scrappage ProgramState to Target Pre-1976 Vehicles —SEMA is opposing a California Air Resources Board (CARB) proposal to spend roughly $30 million annually for an Enhanced Fleet Modernization Program (EFMP) to augment the State’s existing vehicle scrappage program. The proposal would provide incentives statewide for vehicles not currently eligible under the Consumer Assistance Program by removing the existing requirements that vehicles be subject to and fail Smog Check to participate.

CARB is specifically targeting for scrappage pre-1976 vehicles that are not currently required to undergo Smock Check inspections. According to CARB, allowing vehicles that are not currently undergoing registration or that have passed their Smog Check to participate greatly expands the vehicle population that can be retired.

Participants would receive $1,000 per vehicle or $1,500 per vehicle if they meet low-income requirements. The proposal would also establish a pilot voucher program in the South Coast and San Joaquin Valley air basins that targets the highest-emitting vehicles and requires their replacement with newer, cleaner vehicles. The local air districts would work with the Bureau of Automotive Repair (BAR) to determine vehicle eligibility and low-income status. Once approved, the districts would provide the applicant a Letter of Eligibility from BAR and a redeemable voucher. Consumers would retire their vehicle at a participating dismantler, receiving an immediate compensation of $1,000 – $1,500 for vehicle retirement. Consumers could then redeem their voucher at participating car dealerships toward the purchase of a replacement vehicle. CARB is proposing that the voucher compensation be $2,000 or $2,500 per vehicle depending on income level.

CARB will conduct a public hearing to consider adoption of the proposed Enhanced Fleet Modernization Program Regulation (Car Scrap).

Mark Ukers 750 Honda FEATURE COMING TO BIKERNETMETRIC– The feature and the lil red head is finally here. Check it out on the Metric side by following the link under the picture.

Metric tech question of the week: Honda 1975 750

Josh asks:

from what ive seen from your page it seems that youre a twin guy which is fine. but i was wondering if you have any experiance with inline 4’s? heres the deal i have a 1975 honda 750 four and im just absolutely sick of fiddling with the unreliable and touchy carbs i was wondering if you know of a semi cheap (for a broke ass 18 year old) way of going about fuel injection. i know that i will need a cpu for controlling the amount of fuel going in at certain times and all that but i want to know if i could pick up just a random set of throttle bodys from say a 2000 or newer fuel injected bike around the same size cc as mine and slap it on with one of your cpu’s?
Josh,

I just checked with Metric World Champion, Jim Giuffra of AFT Customs. He is one of the first 500 Honda certified mechanics in the US so he knows the 750 Four inside and out.

The carbs on the bike are very easy to work on but if they have tons of miles, they need to be rebuilt or even replaced. Contact an older Honda mechanic in your area for help. It is easy for them and will not cost much but the carbs work very well and should be virtually maintenance free. There is no replacement fuel injection system out there and they would require much fabrication and would not be cheap. One option is to use a custom intake manifold. There is one on the market that available that is a two into one. It would reduce the four carbs into two, eliminating two of the carbs. That would make it easier to tune and give you less to rebuild. If you want to find this intake manifold, please contact Duane Ballard and ask for help. Duane is a leather seat maker but his friend makes the intakes. Just ask for help and let him know that AFT Customs and Bikernet referred you.

Also, Jim says that your points or your coil could be adding to your problem. He says that Dyna has an electronic ignition for the bikes and coils which make them run very well. Just another something for the bike.

I hope this all helps. If not, please send me another email and I will see about helping out. wacko@bikernetmetric.com

There are now videos online in the blog section. Come hear and see videos from pipe manufacturers to salt flat racers. Also, please send us your videos or share stuff from Youtube with us and the biker world. Please send any and all links and vids to me and I will make sure it gets up. Ownership of a modern American Motorcycle ? no matter how good it is ? requires certain mechanical skills. This new book from Wolfgang Publications covers all the skills needed to do basic maintenance and repairs on your American motorcycle.

From adjusting the clutch cable to installing brake pads, this book explains in both words and photos how to safely do your own work. Instead of taking the bike back to the dealer or shop where you bought it, roll it into your garage and do it yourself.

When you?re trying to learn something for the first time, there?s nothing like a good photo, or series of photos, that show exactly how the operation is performed. Wolfgang Publications believes that more photos make for better books, and this one is illustrated with over 400 color images.

There is no such thing as a maintenance free motorcycle. Save money and gain satisfaction. Learn how to do your own repairs in your own small shop with this new 144-page book from Wolfgang Publications, order by mail at PO Box 223, Stillwater, MN. AMA eGrandPrix Introduction: American debut of electric racebikes mixes the future with the past at 2009 AMA Vintage Motorcycle Days–The American Motorcyclist Association (AMA) is pleased to announce that enthusiasts attending AMA Vintage Motorcycle Days, America’s grandest celebration of motorcycle heritage, will get the first glimpse into motorcycling’s future this July 24-26 at the Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course in Lexington, Ohio, with a special presentation of the AMA eGrandPrix Introduction.

Showcasing the cutting-edge technology of electric road-race motorcycles alongside the grandeur of the country’s premier gathering of vintage motorcycle enthusiasts, the AMA eGrandPrix Introduction will feature new-breed zero-emission racebikes circulating at speed on the sinuous 2.4-mile Mid-Ohio track. The electric bikes will perform spirited exhibition laps during breaks in the vintage road-race program that will run as part of the AMA Racing Vintage Grand Championships. The Introduction marks the first international gathering of high-tech electric road-race bikes in the U.S. in the 21st century.

“AMA Vintage Motorcycle Days is all about celebrating motorcycling’s gloried past,” said AMA President and CEO Rob Dingman. “Yet, as the AMA celebrates its 85 years of two-wheeled history, we thought it only fitting to also offer a glimpse into what the next 85 years of motorcycling may bring. The AMA eGrand Prix Introduction showcases the sharpened point of the latest cutting-edge technology, and we’re excited for fans to see the future up close and personal.”

The AMA eGrandPrix Introduction will showcase a number of teams, racers and machines taking part in the inaugural TTXGP eGrandPrix race on the Isle of Man in June. The bikes are sleek, all-electric machines with performance on par with many of today’s internal-combustion racebikes.

Azhar Hussain, founder of the eGrandPrix, said from his office in England: “The world’s first eGrandPrix will launch clean-emission motorcycle racing onto a global platform and demonstrate to the world that clean technologies have matured. AMA Vintage Motorcycle Days provides us with a fantastic opportunity to take our message directly to the United States, a nation with a passion for motorcycling.”

Mission Motors is one team participating in the TTXGP that has agreed to take part in the AMA eGrandPrix Introduction.

Jeremy Cleland, team leader at Mission Motors said: “This is fantastic news and represents a great opportunity for the American public to experience zero-carbon motorcycle racing up close. I believe this event will be the perfect first pit stop for the TTXGP roadshow as it embarks on its global journey.”

He added: “The U.S. right now is a hotbed of advancement in electric motorcycle technology with a number of companies, including ourselves, already taking innovation in this area to the next level.”

Mission Motors, based in San Francisco, is the developer of the Mission One, which the company claims to be the fastest production electric bike. Mission Motors was founded by Forrest North, who first dreamed of building an electric motorcycle when leading the Solar Car Team at Stanford University. The dream stayed with him, even as he joined Tesla Motors to help engineer the company’s cutting-edge battery pack. Mission Motors’ mission is to build an electric motorcycle that can finally compete with gasoline-powered machines.

About AMA Vintage Motorcycle Days

AMA Vintage Motorcycle Days includes vintage racing, North America’s largest motorcycle swap meet, bike shows, demo rides of current production bikes, motorcycling seminars, stunt shows, the new product Manufacturers’ Midway and club corrals featuring marque and regional clubs. The Marque of the Year for 2009 is BSA, whose bikes became synonymous with racing in the United States when the brand swept the top five positions at the Daytona 200 in 1954. The Classic Clubs this year will be the Sandcast Only Owner’s Club (SOOC), and the International CBX Owners Association.

This year will be particularly special because it commemorates the 85th anniversary of the AMA, and will feature a parade of classic motorcycles representing the past 85 years. Volunteers are encouraged to contact the Museum for information about participating in the parade via MotorcycleMuseum.org.
