Laughlin Weekend Thursday News

We’ve had a week from hell with technical difficulties from AT&T.  Numerous calls to tech support, three Technician visits and two ‘solutions’ later, we still have a problem.  The internet blinks in and out, causing us to lose what we’ve been working on, and not to mention that it takes FOREVER to do the News…  Major frustration…  Today our host is having a problem with our Bikernet email program so all the articles Bandit, who is enjoying himself at the Laughlin River Run, all the articles he emailed me along with his intro are lost in cyber space somewhere.  So, you get what you get from me, which ain’t a whole lot.

On the bright side, it’s nice and quiet here at the Headquarters and we’re enjoying perfect weather in our down time.   One of my girlfriends, Christi, came over last night and we worked for over six hours trying to cut down two pair of deer antlers and mount them on to a helmet and a headband.  After two broken drill bits, two broken screws and one broken screw extractor, we succeeded without losing our minds, fingers or blood.  What do you think?

Westboro Baptist Church Goes To Mississippi – And Loses — On Saturday USMC Staff Sgt. Jason Rogers, who was killed in action in Afghanistan April 7, was buried in Brandon, Mississippi. That, by itself, is a sadly unremarkable – though certainly noteworthy and solemn – occasion for us to mark.

And in fact when Sgt. Rogers’ body returned to Brandon it was greeted by hundreds, or perhaps even thousands, of well-wishers who gathered at the roadside to honor the fallen American hero. The dashboard camera from Mississippi state trooper Elmo Townsend’s cruiser gives an indication of the scene last Thursday.

What is most notable about Sgt. Rogers’ funeral in Brandon, however, is what didn’t happen.

You see, the troglodytes from Westboro Baptist Church had threatened to spew their poison at Sgt. Rogers’ funeral.

But the Westboro mob wasn’t on the scene, and Sgt. Rogers was laid to rest without incident – thank God.

Why weren’t there protestors?

Planning ahead by the locals, as it turns out.

From an Ole Miss sports message board, a tidbit of information…

A couple of days before, one of them (Westboro protestors) ran his mouth at a Brandon gas station and got his arse waxed. Police were called and the beaten man could not give much of a description of who beat him. When they canvassed the station and spoke to the large crowd that had gathered around, no one seemed to remember anything about what had happened.

Rankin County handled this thing perfectly. There were many things that were put into place that most will never know about and at great expense to the county.

Most of the morons never made it out of their hotel parking lot. It seems that certain Rankin county pickup trucks were parked directly behind any car that had Kansas plates in the hotel parking lot and the drivers mysteriously disappeared until after the funeral was over. Police were called but their wrecker service was running behind and it was going to be a few hours before they could tow the trucks so the Kansas plated cars could get out.

A few made it to the funeral but were ushered away to be questioned about a crime they might have possibly been involved in. Turns out, after a few hours of questioning, that they were not involved and they were allowed to go on about their business.

Fred Phelps, the disbarred lawyer and Democrat activist who leads the Westboro congregation, will undoubtedly pursue some form of legal action for the way his people were thwarted in Brandon. Let him try. There isn’t a jury in Mississippi which will see things his way.

This is a template for how to handle the Westboro people. If lawsuits don’t work, other means will. Whatever it takes to keep them from harassing bereaved military families on the day their fallen loved ones are laid to rest.

Bandit,   did you see where the father of the Marine that the son of a bitch preacher in Kansas protested the funeral is stuck with a $100.000.00 bill to pay the supreme court. The dad was also assessed a $416,000.00 + fine that Bill O’riley on fox network is going to pay.   I wondered if we could get enough bikers to chip in to raise that much money?   The dad doesn’t have it.  There has to be 100,000 bikers who think enough about this country to raise the money. We could put it in escrow and let him  know what we are doing. I for one damn sure will.

Happy trails

Motorcycle Rider Education should be Made Available To Everyone That Wants It.
— I do not think anyone will argue that motorcycle training is not a good thing But we need to be careful that it does Not become Mandatory. Motorcycle Rider Education should be Made Available To Everyone That Wants It.  It should be paid for from the money that is in Every License and Registration specifically for Education.
Motorcyclist should not have to pay the Government (state issuing License) and then be Forced To Pay Again To A Private Agency and or School. If this is really about Safety and Not Another Way for the Government To Tax People let them Prove It.

U.S. Rep. Jim Sensenbrenner (R-Wis.), as well as a few colleagues, will be introducing a new resolution on May 2nd that will encourage the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration to stop pushing for mandatory helmet laws. The resolution will encourage the NHTSA to focus on motorcycle education and crash prevention instead.

The resolution reads:

The House “recognizes the importance of motorcycle crash prevention as the primary source of motorcycle safety (and) encourages NHTSA to focus on motorcycle crash prevention and rider education as the most significant priorities in motorcycle safety.”

As a rider, I always wear a helmet and encourage everyone to do the same, but I’m also firmly against mandatory helmet laws. Wearing a helmet is a choice that should be made by the rider and not a governing body.

Since 1996, the NHTSA has been banned from lobbying for mandatory helmet laws. The resolution reinforces congress’s intent to keep this ban in place.

Bikernet Word of the Week – anneal uh-NEEL, verb:

1. To toughen or temper.

2. To heat (glass, earthenware, metals, etc.) to remove or prevent internal stress.

3. To free from internal stress by heating and gradually cooling.

4. To fuse colors onto (a vitreous or metallic surface) by heating.

Bracelets and spiral-headed pins of copper, and also of gold, which is even easier to anneal, appear almost at once.

— Leon E. Stover, Bruce Kraig, Stonehenge: the Indo-European Heritage

The sinister imputations that could be drawn from that damning conversation on the tape, and her acceptance of their treachery, had only served to anneal her mind.

— Barbara Taylor Bradford, A Woman of Substance

Anneal has ancient roots in the Old English root an?lan, “to kindle.”

Bill to repeal state’s helmet law makes it out of committee
By Anjeanette Damon

Sen. Don Gustavson

Carson City — They said it could never happen.

Lobbyists would joke about it in the hallways.

Legislators would privately roll their eyes each time the bill was introduced.

Yet, session after legislative session — five to be exact — state Sen. Don Gustavson, R-Sparks, would push a bill to repeal Nevada’s motorcycle helmet law.

And, session after session, Gustavson would watch the bill die in committee, never to see it make it to the floor.

But in a sign of the topsy-turvy dynamic of the 2011 Legislature — or perhaps the temperature in Hades is starting to drop — Gustavson’s helmet bill made it out of committee this session.

“I guess it’s good to be persistent,” Gustavson said Monday.

More than Gustavson’s persistence, however, is the changed complexion of the Legislature that seems responsible for Senate Bill 177’s surprising early success this session.

For one, Gustavson is no longer a member of the Assembly, but is in the Senate, where Democrats hold a much slimmer majority.

Term limits have also filled the Legislature with freshman lawmakers and newbie committee chairs, one of whom, Sen. Shirley Breeden, D-Henderson, made the unusual move of bringing Gustavson’s bill up for a vote even though she opposed it.

“Oh, things are definitely different this session,” said Assemblyman Kelvin Atkinson, D-North Las Vegas, who killed the bill last session as chairman of the Assembly Transportation Committee. “How does a bill pass out of committee by one vote when the chair is opposed to it? I was a little alarmed by that.”

The committee hearings on Gustavson’s bill have always provided prime legislative theater.

The actors:

• Aging Baby Boomers desperate to persuade lawmakers to give them the freedom to feel the wind through their (thinning) hair as they chase their youth on Nevada’s open roads.

• Emergency room doctors recounting grim tales of motorcyclists who died after leaving most of their brain on the highway, or, perhaps worse, lived through a crash only to face life with a traumatic brain injury.

• Insurance company lobbyists arguing all motorists would have to subsidize higher rates or burden hospitals with higher costs of treating crash victims.

• Motorcycle club members countering that helmets in the 110-degree summers in Southern Nevada lead to heat-related illnesses that affect safety.

• Traffic safety officials plying lawmakers with statistics on the loss of life and economic costs associated with eschewing helmets. In Nevada, the federal government estimates 26 lives were saved by helmets in 2008 and that Nevada avoided $49 million in related costs because motorcycle helmets prevented a death or more serious injury.

• Motorcycle enthusiasts citing statistics from Arizona, where only motorcyclists younger than 17 are required to wear a helmet and where motorcycle registrations have gone up while fatalities have gone down.

In the past, the Assembly Transportation Committee would listen to hours of contentious and emotional testimony and the chairman would quietly slip the bill into the proverbial desk drawer, to never again see the light of day.

This session, Breeden said she felt it was proper to bring the bill up for a vote even though she knew it would pass over her own opposition.

Freshman Sen. Elizabeth Halseth, R-Las Vegas — she replaced a veteran senator on the transportation committee who was a vocal opponent of repealing the helmet law — voted in favor of the bill. She and two other Republicans were joined by conservative Democrat Sen. John Lee of North Las Vegas, who frequently breaks from his caucus, in support of the bill.

But for all of Gustavson’s persistence and all of the topsy-turvy dynamics this session, some things never change in Carson City. SB177 likely won’t make it much further this session.

The bill has one more day to exit the Senate floor or perish under today’s deadline for all legislation to pass out of its house of origin.

In this case, a calculation of the costs will probably relegate it to the legislative purgatory of the Senate Finance Committee.

But Gustavson remains both persistent and optimistic.

“I think I have the votes to get it off the floor,” he said, once more testing the temperature in Hades.

NOTE from Rogue: TIGERLILY is in Carson City pushing for this

Thanks
Rogue

UNCLE MONKEY MEETS THE INDIANS– Indian Motorcycle will receive another revamping, this time at the hands of Polaris, more famous for snow machines and their line of Victory motorcycles. The sale and acquisition of Indian has become almost a regular occurrence similar to the Expo, the Olympics, and the World Cup. Indian was one of the oldest motorcycle manufactures in the US standing toe to toe with Harley Davidson in the battle of dominance of the motorcycle industry in North America. Harley Davidson won when Indian Motorcycles closed their doors in 1953. But it was not the end of Indian. They resurfaced re-badged as English Royal Enfield, Italian Italjet Moto’s, and California Motorcycle Company Motorbikes.

Harley Davidson has to be wondering what it takes to kill Indian. Every times the company crashes and burns it rises from the ashes like a Phoenix only to repeat the cycle. Harley Davidson is facing their only problems now a days as the company struggles with the harsh economy that still has a chokehold on much of the United States of America. But why is Indian still around. Granted the original Indian’s were often considered superior to Harley’s but nearly sixty years latter technology has moved on. The legacy of Indian motorcycles endures even after the business plans have failed.

So how can the company that will never die fail to be successful year after year, investor after investor. Perhaps the problem lies in the way we are as a society. We demand coast-to-coast networks of dealerships, fully stocked for any possible warranty issue that we might encounter. Something that is justifiable as the most recent offering was considered to be a luxury motorcycle for the connoisseur of fine motorcycles. Perhaps the problem lies in company/investor demands for multibillion-dollar sales and profits. Indian might have succeeded as a niche market similar to a craft brewery that have prospered. They may not be fortune 500 companies but they can still be profitable. Instead of a stand alone company maybe the best approach might have been to establish a network of support in the independent shops across the country with only a handful of flagship dealerships in the major centers that could support the company. As I mentioned the Indian borrows heavily on technology from Harley Davidson and the aftermarket, parts and know how that is readily accessible from independent shops.

The acquisition of Indian by Polaris might be what the company needs to finally right itself.  Polaris strength is in it diversity selling everything from snow machines to jet skis to ATV’s. It is possible that Polaris can make a long-term investment into the company operating with marginal profits and possible losses until Indian can once again stand proud. It is a business plan that they used when they established their own line of Victory Motorcycles. Polaris has announced that Indian will continue to be separated from Victory Motorcycles, Polaris own line of American made motorcycles. But considering Victory Motorcycles technology surpasses Indians by almost half a century I have to wonder how long that will be.

Like many riders I have to admit I have a fondness for Indian Motorcycles. Though much of their current design was borrowed there is an unmistakeable lure to the motorcycle. The Canadian government has halted the import of Indian motorcycles at this time but with Polaris in the picture now it is only a matter of time before Indian’s will once again grace the roads North of the 49th parallel. Will this finally be Indian’s time to rise to its former glory? Even if it isn’t Indian’s warrior spirit will live on.
