LOVE RIDE SUNDAY POST

Hey,

This is an interesting day. The Retro Love Ride is happening as I type this. Unfortunately I couldn’t make it. We threw a Pre-Love Ride party Friday night just after I roamed through the halls of the massive SEMA automotive convention and I caught the airport mung, plus I needed to rebuild my factory racer for the ride.

Under the weather on Saturday, I wasn’t able to rebuild the Factory Racer and prep for the Love Ride. I’m replacing the Thunderheart ignition system with a single-fire Compu-fire system, but the problem could be the cam, and I’m going to upgrade the stock Crazy Horse Cam with an S&S 561 from Custom Chrome. I can’t wait.

I attended the SEMA Powersports roundtable meeting, and I’m not sure what to make of it or SEMA for motorcycles. Some guys don’t feel SEMA has the capacity to help our industry. Others are very concerned about the automotive distribution channels and don’t want SEMA to influence the motorcycle aftermarket parts pricing. I received mixed signals constantly from this group, but I keep plugging away, in hopes of helping the motorcycle rights world with help from the motorcycle aftermarket. I’m going to ask for impressions from a couple of other guys then I’ll send out a report. Let’s hit the news:

HAWAIIAN BIKE FEATURE COMING TO BIKERNET– Kingdom Customs is a manufacturer of distinctively designed, high performance custom motorcycles. We are committed to the highest standard of design excellence and strive to provide our customers with an exhilarating ownership experience. Each Kingdom Customs motorcycle is a meticulously hand crafted machine drawn from years of mechanical engineering and fabrication experience. Our first production bike, the “Stiletto”, emphasizes our unique styling and dramatic contours. With styling cues drawn from a myriad of inspirations, we’ve created an exciting silhouette that blends the best of street, drag and chopper styles.  All Stilettos are custom built to order with a variety of engine and parts options.

Kingdom Customs was recently rewarded with an exciting photo shoot with an aircraft that embodies everything our custom bikes stand for. Shot by master photographer Jim Russi, the similarities between the U.S. Navy F-18 Hornet and the Kingdom Customs Stiletto are more than obvious. With an emphasis on speed, technology, performance and design, Kingdom Customs is looking to attract attention from discerning enthusiasts. Hailing from the beautiful state of Hawaii, Kingdom Customs shows that there is more to the Aloha state than just sun, sand and surf.

Mr. Plumline sure loves his Custom, Special Construction Bike, From Bikernet Insurance– Bikernet Insurance customer, Coy Plumline, out of the great state of Louisiana, sure loves his Custom Machine. It’s a 1965 PanShovel with quite a story.

Years ago, this American Veteran found  a 1965 engine case in Beirut, Lebanon.  The engine was all that was left from a local Beirutian police bike.  Because it was a local cop bike, it was never titled to an individual owner. Coy had the bike shipped to the USA in 1983 and had it go through an extensive customs department, repatriation process.  Including, getting the bike registered and titled for the first time with him as the original owner.

“It would have been easier and cheaper for me to just run out and purchase a pre-built, after-market custom versus build my own, says biker Coy…but I have never taken the easy path and I really wanted the bike to make the statement. This is my bike. I built it from the gound up.”

As you can see from the photos, this guy poured his heart into this build. Plus, during the building process, he and his amazing, biker-supporting wife, Gwen, lived through hurricanes, tornadoes, floods and the other weather-related chaos that is common off the Louisiana coast.  Throw in a recession in there to make it even more interesting and this biker never lost faith or sight of his goal – “build my own custom motorcycle.” Also of note, Coy added all the high-tech touches, while maintaining old school values and traditions.

This custom beauty runs with the best of them. The 88 cubic inch motor purrs like a kitten says Coy. “I spent hours thinking about every single detail and in the process, learned a lot about building custom motorcycles.  “Check out that belt.  Look at them bars”. We are talking cool for sure. Right there with the best of them.

A special construction custom bike. A labor of love. A real head turner.  Insured by Bikernet Insurance.

Ride Safe Out There Coy and Gwen. We Care About You.

V8 MOTO GUZZI DISCOVERED MODIFIED BY FORD–

Arnold Barnhart, a friend and Peckerhead, built this bike and unveiled it at the Up-N-Smoke car and bike show last Sunday. It’s a 1975 Moto Guzzi frame and transmission with a 1940 Ford flathead V8 engine. It’s mechanically finished and rideable, but will still get some finishing touches in the next few months.

CARLSBAD MOTOCROSS HISTORY FOR SALE–Yamaha’s rare 2WD 2-Trak, and young racers, get a jump on MotoGP’s Moto3?

Bonham’s Auction at the Petersen Museum has it all.

Marty’s bike and the starting gate from Carlsbad Raceway, awarded to him by raceway owner Larry Grismer. Marty rode his and Carlsbad Raceway’s last ever lap, from this starting gate, on Aug. 8, 2004. This motorcycle, an accurate replica of Marty’s original LOP sponsored Yamaha YZ465, was presented to him. (NOTE: Marty did not ride this bike that day). Photo Credit: Scott Cox – resmarket.com

November 5 – Los Angeles, CA – Upcoming at Bonhams Auction held in the prestigious Petersen Museum in Los Angeles Saturday Nov. 13th, there is something for the two wheeled aficionados in the form of bikes belonging to the late Marty Moates, winner of the 1980 USGP at Carlsbad. Also the latest state of the art 450cc road racer prototype, now the focus of the next generation of road racers in MotoGP in the form of Moto3.

Marty Moates Yamaha YZ465 is a faithful replica of Moates’ LOP-sponsored USGP race bike, and was one of his prized possessions. Included in the sale is the actual Carlsbad starting gate from which Moates launched himself into history.

Marty’s YZ250 that he rode on the last official lap of Carlsbad before it was paved over.

The rare WR 450 2-Trac, developed in conjunction with suspension specialists Ohlins, used a gearbox-driven hydraulic pump that fed high-pressure hoses running to the front hub, which contained a small hydraulic motor. When rear-wheel sensors detected a loss of traction, increasingly more power was fed to the front wheel. In effect, the bike was being pulled as well as pushed on loose, technical surfaces.

Yamaha tested the system in long-distance off-road rallies, including the grueling Paris-Dakar, and in 2004 offered WR450F 2-Tracs to the public for competition use. Expensive at over $20,000 and available only in limited series, the bikes were never marketed in the U.S.

Moates used his 2-Trac everywhere from MX courses to sand dunes to supermoto tracks. Included in the sale are three sets of wheels/tires-knobbies for off-road, paddles for sand and slicks for supermotard. Offered on a Bill of Sale.

2009 Husqvarna 450RR Road Racer. With the announcement that MotoGP will turn to single cylinder four stroke bikes in 2012, as proof of concept to replace the last of the two stroke road race bikes, Gavin Trippe joined with Troy Lee Designs and Roland Sands Designs to build several F-450 examples based off current 450cc Motocross bikes. The latest is this Husqvarna, ready to race, based on the company’s limited-edition 450 SMRR as raced into silver medal position by World Champion Adrien Cheyere in the 2009 X-Games. It features a six-speed transmission, slipper clutch, twin titanium exhaust pipes and a standard electric starter. Included in the sale are road racing spare parts and the original supermotard components.

FLORIDA ELECETIONS, House Of Representatives District 22 Race REPORT– Allen West rides a motorcycle and does a monthly column for Wheel On The Road magazine from South Florida.
His opponent Ron Klein tried to make an issue of him being a Biker and even went so far as to suggest he was a member of and or associated with motorcycle gangs.
This brought a rebuttal from Miami Mike the editor of the magazine.
Mike and other concerned motorcyclist from Florida started contacting motorcyclist, veterans, motorcycle internet sites and voters.
IT WORKED!
Allen West WON the House Of Representatives District 22 Race.
Not only is this a win for Allen But for Motorcyclist as well.

BIKERNET BLACKMARKET BOOK DEAL OF THE WEEK– If you own a Panhead, or plan to someday buy a Pan, then this is the book you need. Well-known author Rick Schunk starts the discussion of Panheads with a brief history lesson, followed by a list of things to look for, and avoid, when shopping for a Panhead.

The next section is dedicated to the bike’s chassis, including the wheels, brakes and sheet metal. Like the rest of the book, this part is made up of photo sequences that explain, as only photos can, exactly how to disassemble the chassis, repair the fork, and lace the wire wheels. Paint is a major part of any restoration, Rick shows how to apply a nice paint job, and how to achieve the color and finish that will win approval from the judges.

The engine and transmission are two major components sure to require attention during the restoration or repair of your Panhead. Rick documents the overhaul of both an engine and a transmission with two extensive photo sequences.

Electrical components and wiring put the fear factor into many owners, and even some mechanics. No more. This new book from Wolfgang Publications removes the intimidation with abundant photos and diagrams.

While there are other restoration guides, there are no how-to restoration books that provide extensive, start-to-finish photo sequences explaining each major operation necessary to the restoration of a Harley-Davidson Panhead.

Panhead Restoration, 176 pages, retail $34.95, available this week from Bikernet for only $24.95 with free shipping to US addresses. Go for it, buy one today, your Panhead will thank you.

CALIFORNIA SCOOTER COMPANY TO ATTEMPT 150CC SCOOTER LAND SPEED RECORD–California Scooter Company will attempt to set the 150cc land speed record on 21 November under the auspices of the Motor Scooter International Land Speed Federation. Sylvain Binau, 22, will pilot California Scooter’s land speed record bike.

California Scooter Company, a motorcycle manufacturer located in La Verne, California, is building a special motorcycle to set the world’s first 150cc land speed record. The land speed record attempt will take place under the auspices of the Motor Scooter International Land Speed Federation (MILSF), the organizing body for motor-scooter-based competition. Sylvain Binau, 22, will pilot California Scooter’s land speed record bike.

The California Scooter land speed record motorcycle will use a custom frame and a modified version of the company’s standard 150cc single-cylinder 4-stroke engine. Additional custom touches include numerous streamlining features, custom paint, significant weight reduction from the bike’s already low 240-lb weight, and a modified rider position to reduce aerodynamic drag. The record attempt will occur in southern California on 21 November 2010 as part of a series of speed trials organized by MILSF.

“We entered this event to boost the public’s awareness of small displacement motorcycle capabilities,” said Steve Seidner, President and CEO of California Scooter Company. “We think these bikes are the wave of the future, and we like doing things with them that people might think a 150cc bike couldn’t do. A team of riders recently rode our bikes up and down the length of the Baja peninsula, for example, and we have a number of cool things we plan to do in the future. Our bikes get 98 miles per gallon, and we’d like to see the land speed record bike hit at least 98 miles per hour.”

California Scooter Company motorcycles take their styling cues from the Mustang motorcycle, which was manufactured in Glendale, California, from 1947 to 1962.   “The original Mustangs competed in many speed trials, racing events, and other competitions, and we aim to continue that tradition,” said Seidner.

THERE YOU HAVE IT–I thought I would be overwhelmed with news items, since I was out of touch for a couple of day, but that wasn’t the case.

I’m reading Ford County by John Grisham. It’s a series of short stories by the master, all based in Ford County, outside Memphis. I’m actually a tad disappointed. I was looking forward to a gripping novel, and these short stories don’t cut it, but on the other hand they’re interesting, from a story-writer prospective. Here’s what he said in his dedication:

To Bobby Moak

When A Time to Kill was published twenty years ago, I soon learned the painful lesson that selling books was far more difficult that writing them. I bought a thousand copies and had trouble giving them away. I hauled them in the trunk of my car and peddled them at libraries, garden clubs, grocery stores, coffee shops, and a handful of bookstores. Often, I was assisted by my dear friend Bobby Moak. There are stories we will never tell.

Interesting. I’m still dragging books around, but I love writing stories, books, you name it. Even though it doesn’t pay much, it affords me millions worth of freedom with every click of the computer.

Ride Forever,

–Bandit
