MAJOR PROGRESS BIKERNET WEEKLY NEWS for September 7, 2017

Hey,

It’s a day of progress. Franky will get his Tattoo Dyna ready for a trip to Bennett’s Performance on Saturday.

He worked out a Tattoo Deal to get his FXR rear belt replaced. The lastest Horse magazine arrived in the mail yesterday. We heard they were in trouble, but up pops a new issue.

Parts arrived for my strange Panhead project from J&P Cycle and Franky delivered them to Bob Bennett for the rebuild.

The master painter Deny is almost finished with the ’64, ’69, and ’79 Panhead paint job. What the hell?

We have high hopes for the Easyriders pending deal. It came after the auction deal didn’t work, but this deal was initiated by the auction, so maybe the auction didn’t fail. “Still working on it,” said Joe Teresi, the publisher this morning. “No news!”

Our mural is scrambling along. I have a meeting regarding my VA benefits on Friday. I did three tours in Vietnam on the first fleet flag ship. I came back unaware of the physical impact.

I’m still trying to find the perfect Pickup for Bikernet. I’m looking for around a 2012 Ford F150 with an extended cab and long bed. I’m going to drive it to Kugal Customs for a couple of mods, then doctor it with Bikernet bling and drive away.

Let’s hit the news:

The Bikernet Weekly News is sponsored in part by companies who also dig Freedom including: Cycle Source Magazine, the MRF, Las Vegas Bikefest, Iron Trader News, ChopperTown and BorntoRide.com, Sturgis Museum.

BIKERNET TRIKES ROADTESTS THE NEW POLARIS SLINGSHOT–
First Drive — 2018 Polaris Slingshot

How much fun can one have on three wheels? We found the answer with Polaris’ new 2018 line of road-hugging screamers.

Admittedly, this contraption looks more like a car or an autocycle than a motorcycle or even a trike. In the eyes of the law in the US, it actually is a motorcycle, and that’s why we’ll see us driving it on the streets wearing a helmet (we drove it in California).

Anyway let’s get hit the ‘Go’ switch on the 2018 Polaris Slingshot line of open-air cockpit roadsters. Whether you think it’s a car or not, it looks like it could be fun…

UM Motorcycles launch Commando Classic and Mojave in India– In May 2017 Bikernet.com broke the news of smaller player UM Motorcycles of USA launching an All-India scale dealership with their two models. They are in the prime segment where budget of the buyer, pricing, goodies offered and style quotient all meet to decide if the biker buys an Enfield or a Bajaj Avenger or the new player UM Motorcycles of USA.

https://www.bikernet.com/pages/UM_Motorcycles_USA_comes_to_India.aspx

UM Motorcycles has increased the size of their line-up in India from two to four by launching the Commando Classic and Commando Mojave in India, at a price of Rs 1.89 lakh (ex-showroom, New Delhi) and Rs 1.80 lakh (ex-showroom, New Delhi), respectively.

Both the new motorcycles sport the same 280cc engine that is present on the first two models they launched in India, the Renegade Commando and Renegade Sport S. It is capable of producing 24.80hp at 8,500rpm and peak torque of 23Nm at 7,000rpm.

The Commando Classic has typical cruiser styling while the Commando Mojave has a more rugged appearance, due to minimal bodywork and matte paint.

All the motorcycles made by UM Motorcycles are typically pitted against Royal Enfield machines. They even have a more advanced engine than RE but the cult following of RE in India will be hard for UM Motorcycles to crack.

Harley-Davidson, Triumph, Indian, Ducati are marked under Premium Segment where the motorcycles cost as much as a sedan car from Mercedes, BMW or Audi.

Royal Enfield launched its distribution center in Brazil to expand into Latin America market. Looks like the Latinos are fighting back with UM of USA targeting the largest two-wheeler market that exists only in India. Competition is heating up in the East. I ask sincerely, where are the Japanese brands? Japanese bikes are fast losing ground in India.

BILL DODGE TO DANCE WITH LORETTA LYNN–
Bill Dodge’s “BC Moto Invitational” to feature hand-crafted motorcycle builders during the Tennessee Motorcycles & Music Revival

The Tennessee Motorcycles and Music Revival, a 4 day event celebrating all things “Motorcycles and Music” at the historic Loretta Lynn Ranch announces Bill Dodge’s “BC Moto Invitational”, a custom motorcycle show featuring hand selected craftsmen and women displaying some of the country’s best custom motorcycles.

Bill Dodge himself has chosen what he calls a “top section” of some of the most talented custom motorcycle builders in the country to display their talents during the event. Bill knows a thing or two about quality craftsmanship, a full time custom motorcycle builder since 1990, Bill not only builds impressive bikes to look at, but also he builds bikes that are to be ridden, ridden hard. In other words, it is an honor for these builders to be hand selected by Bill Dodge.

“This is great honor for me, to be able to invite builders that I’ve admired for years, and some builders I feel are the ones to watch.” States Bill Dodge

Guests will have the opportunity to not only see these custom motorcycles up close, but also to talk with each builder during the 4-day event. The hand-selected list of builders includes; Anthony Marinaro, Ben Jordan, Bob Wells, Bobby Middelton, Brad Barnes, Brian Elliot, Bryan Lane, Carsten Fritzen, Chris Avellino, Chris Wade, Dan Carr, Eric Allard, Eric Stein, Jeff Wright, Jeff Cochran, Jeremy Cupp, Johnny Humphrey, Kevin Bean’re, Mitch “Maggo” Bodine, Roadside Marty, Matt Harris, Micahel Lewis, Pat Patterson, Paul Wideman, Rhett Holley, Rich Phillips, Rich Ryan, Rod Davis, Rusty Nash, Steve Pieffer, Steve Broyles, Wade Harlan, Will Ramsey, Zach Johnson, Craig Rodsmith and Christian Sosa.

The Tennessee Motorcycles and Music Revival event will host motorcycle riders of all makes, models and years at one of the most storied and beautiful ranches in the great state of Tennessee, the Loretta Lynn Ranch, September 28- October 1. The event will feature more than 25 bands, including headliners John Anderson, A Thousand Horses and The Kentucky Headhunters.

Also the event offers a variety of entertainment including Steve Trevino, Netflix comedy star, hooligan style racing with the mayor of fun himself, Bean’re, Hogway Speedway racing pigs, Rhett Rhotten’s Wall of Death, Nashville food trucks, Southern Bucks mechanical bull, premium and primitive camping sites, vendors and plenty of riding on some of the most beautiful roads in America.

All makes and models of motorcycles are welcome at Tennessee Motorcycles and Music Revival.

It is important to note that Loretta Lynn’s Tennessee Motorcycles and Music Revival is not associated in any way with any other previous events in the area.

Loretta Lynn and family have hosted the American Motorcyclist Association (AMA) Rocky Mountain ATV/MC AMA Amateur National Motocross Championship for nearly 40 years and decided to host their own event to cater to the motorcycle-riding community at large. This special event benefits from the gracious hospitality of Country Music Legend, Loretta Lynn.

“We’ve been having motorcycles here forever with the AMA, and all year long thousands of people riding in to camp at the Ranch. This is what we do here, and I’m so excited for this new one to happen.” shared Loretta Lynn.

Ride-in campers will enjoy a stunning location along Hurricane Creek with easy access to the event hub, concert stage, vendors, entertainment, food court and bars. Tow vehicles, motor coaches, small and larger RV’s will all have a variety of options available. Weekend passes, daily passes and a limited number of VIP passes will be offered.

“The goal of this event is to feature music representative of the incredible musicians, song-writers and performers of the area and to fulfill what many motorcycle enthusiasts have been asking for – a destination event in a unique location that celebrates the rhythm of a great road trip,” says event spokesperson and family member, Tayla Lynn. “While motorcyclists know what it takes to have a good ride, adding a great destination can make for the perfect trip. Ride the rolling hills of Tennessee, visit the area’s unique attractions, and come back to Loretta’s Ranch for fun and great music, custom motorcycles, and racing fun with fellow riders.”

Also very important to note is Tennessee Motorcycles and Music Revival will support a variety of military organizations, including Mission 22 and Flags 4 Vets.

More detailed information including band and musician schedules, Loretta’s Mission 22 Charity Ride and plenty more can be found at www.motorcyclesandmusic.com

IRMA HURRICANE UPDATE FROM CRUISING OUTPOST–

Report from our Weather Guru, Lee Chesneau

35 year Senior Weather Analyst for NOAA, 20 years as the U.S. Navy Senior Forecaster. “As of 9 PM Wednesday evening, powerful Hurricane IRMA will maintain its severe intensity and will not change much; perhaps a slight decrease in core winds as the storm center will interface the north coast of the Dominican Republic and Cuba on Thursday & Friday.

However, it will still be an EXTREME Hurricane! The storm’s track is in a stable WNW steering current and will remains so for the next 24-hours. After that, look for IRMA to slow down and begin a turn to a more NW to northerly track. The threat of direct hurricane impacts in Florida over the weekend and early next week has significantly increased!!

FLORIDA GUN NUT REPORT–
Gov. Scott signs Florida emergency concealed carry bill

Florida Gov. Rick Scott (R) made it law Thursday to allow for unlicensed concealed carry during periods of mandatory evacuations.

(Photo: Tampa Bay Sun)

It will now be legal for gun owners in the Sunshine State to temporarily carry concealed handguns without a permit during periods when the sun isn’t shining so bright.

Now law is a measure to allow law-abiding citizens without concealed carry licenses to bear arms during declared mandatory evacuations. A reboot of a failed 2014 bill that was killed in last minute political maneuvering, this session’s effort had an easier go of it after police lobby groups embraced the proposal. It passed the Republican-controlled Senate in an easy 29-10 vote while the House last month approved it by a 86-26 margin.

“As Hurricane Season approaches it’s critical that our rights are protected during natural disasters,” advised Sen. Jeff Brandes, R-Petersburg, in a statement. “With the signing of SB 290, all lawful gun owners will be permitted to carry a concealed weapon if they are complying with a mandatory evacuation during a state of emergency. I’m proud to have sponsored this bipartisan bill ensuring that we have the right to protect our families during these sometimes chaotic times.”

Brandes bill, SB 290, creates an exception to Florida’s prohibition against concealed carry of a weapon without a permit by allowing adults not otherwise prohibited from possessing a firearm to temporally do so while evacuating. The law allows for a 48-hour window that this would be allowed after the evacuation has been ordered. However, the governor can authorize an extension as needed.

Such evacuation orders occur frequently in the state, most often associated with hurricane threats. Florida, with hundreds of miles of coastline in the North Atlantic and Gulf of Mexico, is prone to severe hurricanes. Since 2000, no less than 63 tropical or subtropical cyclones have affected Florida, more than any other state.

Second Amendment advocates in the state refer to the new law as true common-sense gun legislation.

“This bill is a no-brainer, particularly in Florida with our hurricane exposure,” Marion Hammer, president of the Unified Sportsmen of Florida and past president of the National Rifle Association, told Guns.com Thursday. “When you’re ordered to evacuate — to take your kids, your dog and valuables and flee — the last thing you should leave behind is your gun.”

People have a responsibility to defend themselves and their family, “so taking firearms with you is not only your right, it is your responsibly,” said Hammer.

The law was effective Thursday at signing while the Atlantic hurricane season begins June 1.

Next, Covering large areas of the body with tattoos may restrict how people sweat, reports the New York Times. The tattooed skin, they found during a test, produced nearly half as much sweat as the unmarked skin—and nearly twice as much salt. The age of the tat has no bearing. It just means you’ll be more sweaty in other areas.

BIKER WINE–
This Wine Brand Wants Hardcore Bikers Drinking its Rosé

After a long day on the Black Hills Run on the back of a Harley at one of the most popular motorcycle rallies in the country, bikers historically favored a beer or a stiff drink.
Now, rosé wants its turn.

For the first time in nearly 80 years, the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally, which draws half a million guests each year to the small South Dakota city, has a wine brand as a sponsor.
Josh Cellars will be hosting 10 tasting events over the 10-day rally, which began Aug. 4, to promote its new $14.99 rosé. It will also document the bikers’ reactions on its Facebook and Instagram pages.

Josh Cellars parent Deutsch Family Wine & Spirits is working with North Carolina-based agency French West Vaughan to produce the videos and other content, but would not comment on the financial terms of the sponsorship.

Some of the rally’s other sponsors include Budweiser, Jack Daniel’s and Ole Smoky Tennessee Moonshine.

Bikers may seem like an unlikely market for a drink most associated with seersucker and boat shoes. But Deutsch Chief Marketing Officer Renato Reyes said the wine industry has long known bikers are a good bet.

“We’ve always looked at motorcycle enthusiasts as a pretty affluent consumer — we’ve always known that they drink wine,” Reyes said. He added that while in the past rosé had a girly stereotype, he believes that has faded in recent years as the wine type has exploded in popularity. Instead of bucking a stereotype, he said this type of campaign is about getting to where the premium wine drinkers are.

It’s also about making sipping a glass of wine as socially acceptable in the motorcycle world as bellying up to a Jack on the rocks.

The true test of rosé’s success at Sturgis may be seeing whether anyone hits up the tattoo artist Josh Cellars commissioned for the rally, who will be inking a winged glass of wine onto any willing participant for free.

Deutsch’s Reyes is hopeful.
“You always have one adventurous person out there,” he said.

MOTORCYCLE RIDERS FOUNDATION ALERT–
Prayers please for New Mexico Assistant MRF Representative Raymond Gallegos who was involved in a motorcycle crash last night when his front tire blew out on his way to the hospital to see his daughter who had just given birth to his second granddaughter.

His injuries are non-life-threatening, but he is in a lot of pain with a lot of soft tissue bruising, injury to his hand and ankle and road rash.

THE UNCLE MONKEY WEATHER REPORT–

I’d love to say every day riding is a great day – the sun shining, light breezy, the growl of drag pipes with a tight little hard body squeezed up to you – but every once in a while there are days that kick your ass.

We’ve all bunkered down running through a heavy down pour looking for an over pass to offer protection. We eagerly grin when we make it through snarling at the clouds to do their best. Days when the thermometer drops down, cold angrily biting at your extremities, reaching down to warm our hands near the motor as we soldier on. But for all those bad days they are still great rides. Another story for around the campfire of twelve rounds with the worst Mother Nature had to throw at us and we survived.

No I’m talking about those days when the temperature is too cold to go without a jacket, too hot with it on and no amount of venting fixes it. The wind coming at just the right angle to buffer your head, pounding away at it like a prize fighter.

There are a few drops of rain here and there that are not enough to gear up for but just enough to sting like needles as they hit. Traffic is heavy and lumbering adding to the buffering gusts of wind. No blue sky, no sweet heart on the back, no comrade by your side. They are draining miles that you have to put on, watching the clock so that you’re not late.

It is those days that really kick your ass. They weather you; beat you down not with the extreme 114 degree of an Arizona summer or below freezing riding through a mountain pass but with a relentless barge. There is no story to tell, no warrior spirit.

Your mind wonders to how nice it would be within the confines of your truck with Skynyrd on the radio, a double-double in the cup holder, and the A/C set just right. Ah but, there is no adventure in the drive and there’s always an adventure in every ride.

THE BAD COP FILES–
Utah cop who arrested nurse over blood draw fired from second job.

A Utah police detective accused of assaulting and unlawfully arresting a nurse after she refused to let him take a blood sample from an unconscious patient without a warrant was fired on Tuesday from his second job as a part-time ambulance driver.

Jeff Payne was terminated from his job at Gold Cross Ambulance service over comments he made while taking nurse Alex Wubbels into custody on July 26, which were captured on his body camera, Gold Cross president Mike Moffitt told Reuters.

The comments suggested that Payne would bring transients to University of Utah Hospital, where Wubbels worked, while transporting “good” patients to another facility, Moffitt said.

“Those remarks are just not reflective of our company’s philosophy and the service we provide and because of that behavior we felt we had to separate ways,” Moffitt said. “His comments reflected poorly on the company and violated several company policies.”

Reuters was not able to contact representatives for Payne, who has been placed on administrative leave by the Salt Lake City Police Department over the incident, which made headlines when Wubbels’ lawyers released the body camera footage.

The footage shows Payne roughly handcuffing Wubbels and shoving her into an unmarked squad car after she refused to let him draw blood from an unconscious man, who had been badly injured when he crashed at the end of a police chase.

Salt Lake City Mayor Jackie Biskupski and Police Chief Mike Brown have since apologized to Wubbels and District Attorney Sam Gilled for a criminal investigation into the incident.

THE NMA ALERT–
The Scariest Ride of Your Life

By guest writer William Rayburn, NMA Washington State Member

As an NMA member I truly enjoy reading the NMA e-newsletter. Today I thought to myself I could contribute something that I have had the displeasure witnessing first-hand and something quite relevant to the subject matter for which the NMA is founded. I’m talking about DHS (Department of Homeland Security) in-country checkpoints, their abuse of power, as well as the potential hazards it presents to the average driver.

Let me preface what I’m about to say with what an in-country checkpoint is and is not according to law and then show what they have become. A DHS checkpoint is an established temporary or permanent roadblock along specific highways by the Federal Government, manned by border patrol agents, for the “…sole purpose of conducting a routine and limited inquiry into residence status.” This as defined by the Supreme Court in United States v. Martinez-Fuerte, 428 U.S. 543 (1976).

But these checkpoints now are anything but unobtrusive and not simply limited to citizenship determination. Following some years of operation the purpose has clearly shifted into a random criminal investigations checkpoints and that has resulted in a power abusive fishing expedition for the agents that man them. Make no mistake they will stop at nothing if they are so inclined, and no constitutional right that you think you have will stand in their way.

Some folks are quite familiar with the random heavy handed approach they take and some have taken it upon themselves to defy this Draconian behavior – which only fuels the agent(s) brash and lawless approach. In many cases you could easily find yourself wondering at one of these checkpoints if you have gone back in time to Nazi Germany.

However, to be fair, many people go through these checkpoints every day with no incident. But when someone does encounter a problem it can be quite a surprise. Take for example Jessica Cooke, a student of law enforcement, who one fine day in May 2015 found herself on the receiving end at one of these checkpoints.

The video picks up after she had pleasantly provided all the necessary documentation proving who she was but appeared “nervous” according to the female agent and was ordered to secondary. There, she was further commanded to wait for an undetermined amount of time until a k-9 unit arrived, obviously to sniff for drugs.

When she questioned the probable cause and attempted to exercise her rights things quickly escalated. What happened then is totally unbelievable.

This scenario is being played out on our American highways daily. And it’s not unheard of although many people may never face this unless they are traveling within 100 miles of a border or coastal area. It’s then you should be prepared for every possible experience that could shock your conscience. Which is the reason I thought of writing this article, to make drivers aware.

John Stossel did a piece on this which I am also including. It was a well done 20/20 reporting of facts and brief clips.

These checkpoints have obviously morphed into something they were not intended to be and certainly not anything that the Supreme Court had envisioned.

By the way, being made to wait for any length of time for a k-9, after the time had lapsed to find that Ms. Cooke was in fact a citizen is also against the law according to the Supreme Court. A “…stop exceeding the time needed to handle the matter for which the stop was made violates the Constitution’s shield against unreasonable seizures,” Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg wrote for the majority. The vote was 6 to 3. Rodriguez v. United States No. 13-9972.

It is well established that a police officer can’t randomly pull you over just to search your vehicle, absent probable cause to suspect that the driver has or is in the commission of a crime. But the fact is the government is doing exactly this by way of these in-country checkpoints. And before you say it, it really won’t matter how cooperative you are before you find yourself on the receiving end of something like this.

Many may not ever encounter such a thing until you find yourself on vacation saying something like, “oh look here honey, they have some sort of roadblock going on with lots of border patrol officers.” You may just be getting on the scariest ride of your life.

CALIFORNIA GUN NUT REPORT–
California: Anti-Gun Bill Heading to the Governor’s Desk

Contact the Governor and your State Legislator TODAY – They MUST Hear from You

Yesterday, September 6, the state Senate concurred on the Assembly amendments to SB 464 by a vote of 23 to 14. SB 464 has been sent to engrossing and enrolling before heading to the Governor for his consideration. Please use our TAKE ACTION below to email Governor Brown and urge him to VETO SB 464. If you would like to CALL and FAX the Governor, his office phone number is 916-445-2841 and fax number is 916-558-3160.

Senate Bill 464, sponsored by Senator Jerry Hill (D-13), would further increase the mandatory storage and security requirements for licensed firearms dealers. California already has some of the strictest laws in the country regarding how dealers must store and secure firearms. This bill simply places more costs and mandates on law-abiding business owners.

Your state legislators still need to hear from you on the remaining anti-gun bills. Please use our TAKE ACTION button below to email your State Senator and Assembly Member urging them to OPPOSE AJR 24, AB 7, and AB 424. If you would like to call your state legislator please click here to find their contact information.

Currently Pending in the Assembly:

Assembly Joint Resolution 24 passed the Assembly Public Safety Committee on August 31 and is eligible for a vote on the Assembly Floor. Sponsored by Assembly Member Miguel Santiago (D-53), AJR 24 would urge the Congress of the United States to not enact S. 446, H.R. 38, or any other similar “concealed carry reciprocity” legislation that would require the State of California to recognize the concealed carry standards of every other state.

Currently Pending in the Senate:

Assembly Bill 7 passed the Senate Appropriations Committee on September 1 and is eligible for a vote on the Senate Floor. Sponsored by Mike Gipson (D-64), AB 7 would further restrict the open carry of an unloaded firearm on public property by including unincorporated areas as prohibited places.

Assembly Bill 424 is eligible for a vote on the Senate Floor. Sponsored by Assembly Member Kevin McCarty (D-7), AB 424 would remove the authority of a school district superintendent, his or her designee, or equivalent school authority to provide written permission for a person to possess a firearm within a school zone.

Do not give up the fight! Continue to CALL and EMAIL your State Legislators. They need to hear from you as we enter the final weeks of the 2017 legislative session.

Please continue to check your inbox and the California Stand and Fight webpage for updates on issues impacting your Second Amendment rights and hunting heritage in California.
