FLY OVER STATES NEWS– Law Abiding Citizen
What “American made” means to us
Here at FOS headquarters in Austin Texas, we think “Made in America” is critical to success.
Why? Well, for starters, we couldn’t very well purport to be supportive of the FOS, or our nation at large, if we went and farmed the work or products out to some foreign country, now could we? But also, we just feel better being able to wear something, and sell something, made here, in America, by Americans.
Do we lose some profit doing this way? Not in our eyes. Because the way we see it, that “profit” was never there in the first place. Because we’d have to violate our code of ethics to earn that “profit” and that’s never going to happen. Therefore, as far as we’re concerned, it never existed in the first place.
We make what we can on our gear and we keep it all in-country and that represents plenty of profit for us. Not everybody out there agrees and you’re welcome to buy from them if you’d rather.
But you gotta ask yourself a hard question; what are you really saying, what are you really supporting, if you wear something that represents jobs and work leaving your own nation? We are the FOS.

NEWS FROM ARIEL MOTORCYCLES—Ariel has unveiled a limited-edition version of its Ace motorcycle called the Ace of Diamonds. Only ten will be made in the UK, with a price tag of 19,982 pounds. Check out the one-off paint scheme and commemorative plaque.
Innovation. Passion. Daring. Since their first motorcycle in 1901 Ariel have been synonymous with breaking the rules.
At the heart of each Ace – that aluminium perimeter frame. Recognisably Ariel, remarkably ingenious. Milled from solid billet; 70 hours of machining time; welded by hand; hard anodised; to form a piece of engineering that is a structural masterpiece but also a work of art. The beauty in a piece of machining, the thought, the care and the precision is slipped into every single component. And again, because you love motorcycles, you’ll understand.
Ariel power? Honda, of course. Used to extremes in the Ariel Atom and now the Nomad. Proven on two wheels millions of times, from commuting to racing, from touring to your favourite stretch of road. Dependable, reliable, exact power. V4, 1237cc, 173bhp. Enough to propel you to 165mph if you’re in the mood or cruise along if you’re in another.
The Ace is designed to fit you and what you want to do; not the other way round. ABS, switchable traction control and shaft drive as standard. Dual Clutch Transmission as option. Choose the manual gearbox and shift yourself or choose the DCT and press a button, or just put it on Auto and let it do it for you. Honda engineering, Ariel tuning, quality second to none. Plus an exhaust note that will make you grin every time you start the bike.

THE BANDIT’S CANTINA BAD JOKE LIBRARY IS WIDE OPEN--Dave was excited about his new .338 rifle and decided to try bear hunting. He traveled up to Alaska, spotted a small brown bear and shot it. Soon after there was a tap on his shoulder, and he turned around to see a big black bear.
The black bear said, “That was a very bad mistake. That bear was my cousin. I’m going to give you two choices. Either I maul you to death or we have sex.” After considering briefly, Dave decided to accept the latter alternative.
So the black bear had his way with Dave. Even though he felt sore for two weeks, Dave soon recovered and vowed revenge. He headed out on another trip to Alaska where he found the black bear and shot it dead. Right after, there was another tap on his shoulder. This time a huge grizzly bear stood right next to him.
The grizzly said, “That was a big mistake, Dave. That bear was my cousin and you’ve got two choices: Either I maul you to death or we have rough sex.”
Again, Dave thought it was better to cooperate with the grizzly bear than be mauled to death. So the grizzly had his way with Dave. Although he survived, it took several months before Dave fully recovered.
Now Dave was completely outraged, so he headed back to Alaska and managed to track down the grizzly bear and shot it. He felt sweet revenge, but then, moments later, there was a tap on his shoulder.
He turned around to find giant polar bear standing there. The polar bear looked at him and said, “Admit it Dave, you don’t come here for the hunting, do you?

COPPERS and CHOPPERS–When I was asked to cover this event and take part in some of the workshops it took me back a bit, to think about being a part of the training taking place in the parking lot of the Anaheim Angels baseball stadium in Orange County, California.
Coppers and Choppers Motorcycle Safety Expo was held on Saturday, October 27th by the Anaheim Police Department with their Motor Officers as instructors. The last time I rode a motorcycle around cones in a parking lot was when I got my motorcycle license back in 1972 when I was sixteen years old on a Suzuki 250 Savage. Thinking maybe it might be time to sharpen up my skills and have a little fun doing it, I headed out for the event early Saturday morning.
The weather was great for the ride down the mountain to Anaheim to meet Karla Santillan and Sgt. Rick Boyer to get this event started. After meeting both of them and the rest of their crew, and the opening ceremonies, it was game on! Sgt. Boyer and I walked over the parking lot as he explained what each workshop was all about. Riders were divided into 3 groups based on their experience level: 1) a person with less than a year and a half riding experience, then 2) up to three years, and 3) ten years or more.
The first workshop I wanted to do was Control Braking with a left turn and a half-circle back, which will help you maneuver if you get yourself in a pinch with traffic. You have to get up to 40 mph and pass through a set of cones before you let off the throttle and hit your brakes, then make your left turn and circle back around. It took me a few times to get the technique the way the instructors wanted it done. I have to tell you I was a little nervous to get into the game with the workshops especially when all the officers knew my name.
From 10am to 2pm the workshops were action packed with activities for riders of all ages and levels of riding skills, and three-wheelers too. A list of the workshops clearly shows the intensive training in mind: Clutch Control with Braking, Braking and Collision Avoidance, Cone Patterns and Braking, and Marijuana DUI discussion/Q&A. All that before lunch.
Each rider was assigned to a workshop that fit their skills and desire to improve, and kept the officers busy helping them. Everyone was having fun with each other as the day went by. All the workshops were busy with riders rotating from one to the other as every rider was improving their ability to perform the maneuvers, and also wanting to reach the highest skill level they could at this event.
The Marijuana DUI class was discussion-only, to help riders know what is involved in a stop where marijuana is suspected or found.
Before the second half of this event, we enjoyed a nice lunch break: There was a food truck that served tri-tip steak with a beef sandwich combination, with an ice cream truck standing by for dessert and a DJ to supply us with plenty of music to keep everyone moving.
So after we fueled up, it was time to hit the parking lot again with all those cones to master. The afternoon group of activities consisted of: Top Gun Demo, Cone Patterns and Braking, Q&A: Ask a Motor Cop, DUI Demo, Paired Riding and Braking, and the Grand Finale was TOP GUN: Coppers vs. Choppers & Slow Race Competition.
Top Gun was absolutely the best part of the event that I enjoyed. Watching the riders compete against the officers in a very competitive slow-moving test of skills through cones that are in a square with so many configurations to deal with made it very exciting to watch like a cat and mouse game. Two riders; the one going first tries to make the second rider make a mistake, and has two minutes to ride through all of the cones. The second rider has to follow the first rider; if the second rider does not make a mistake, they win, but if they make a mistake the first rider wins. There were a couple of riders who were very good with this event and gave the officers a run for their money.
We want to thank the sponsors for Coppers and Choppers who were present with onsite exhibit booths:

GOVERNMENT RELATIONS from the MIC–
MIC Leaders Meet with Agriculture Secretary Perdue to Talk Trail Access, and Partnerships.
Motorcycle industry representatives and outdoor recreation leaders met with Agriculture Secretary Sonny Perdue and Under Secretary for Natural Resources and the Environment Jim Hubbard, along with other officials, to emphasize a need for better recreation permitting processes and expanded partnerships to improve access to lands managed by the U.S. Forest Service.
“National forests are at the heart of recreation for Americans, and we made clear to Secretary Perdue that access to trails for motorized vehicles, addressing the maintenance backlog and investing in ways to expand and enhance recreation infrastructure are key to helping rural economies and the recreation economy thrive,” said Paul Vitrano, Motorcycle Industry Council board chairman and senior assistant general counsel at Polaris Industries.
Vitrano and Buche were among other Outdoor Recreation Roundtable leaders and recreation company CEOs who met with government officials at the U.S. Department of Agriculture on Jan. 8.
The outdoor group noted the importance of national forests to many recreational activities and highlighted world-class experiences provided to motorized trail enthusiasts, anglers, skiers, hikers, climbers, campers, paddlers and boaters. The recreation leaders underscored the key role national forests play in rural economies across the country and the importance of key provisions in the 2018 Farm Bill that will allow rural economic development grants for recreation infrastructure in rural America.
Perdue said wildfire costs had impacted the department’s recreation efforts and thanked the recreation industry for its role in recent legislation that should control future fire costs at the USDA and allow the Forest Service and the recreation industry to accomplish more through improved partnerships.
ORR participants also referred to positive actions already underway at the USDA, which are helpful to growing an industry that accounts for 2.2 percent of the nation’s economy and supports 4.6 million jobs. Recreation leaders also highlighted opportunities for immediate progress, including:
Secretarial visits to sites demonstrating USDA partnerships supporting rural communities and the importance of broadband access in these gateway areas
Secretarial support for innovative USFS recreation efforts that capitalize on private investments to expand and enhance recreation infrastructure, including campgrounds.
Making the revamped www.recreation.gov website – and its potential for providing information on recreation opportunities – more visible.
Addressing recreation permitting problems with electronic and simplified applications and timely processing.
Eliminating the maintenance backlog on USFS lands, especially where it threatens recreational activity.
Outreach to young Americans and expanded use of conservation corps.
“We are committed to helping Americans enjoy recreational opportunities in our national forests,” Perdue said. “I invite you to help by recommending specific priority steps. Let’s capitalize on the fact that recreation is agnostic relative to politics, and let’s help more Americans enjoy the great outdoors.”

U.S. Media Bans Scientific Dissent – Claim Wildfires, Floods, Droughts, Hurricanes Are Human-Controlled–
NBC News’ Chuck Todd recently asserted that we humans can control the climate and the frequency or intensity of extreme weather events (hurricanes, floods, droughts) and disasters (wildfires) with our CO2 emissions. He has declared the science is “settled” on this point and therefore no “denier” is allowed on his Meet the Press program. But Todd and the members of his panel have recited claims that are contravened by observational evidence and scientific publications.

On 30 December, 2018, the United States news media (NBC) put their political advocacy on full display in a Meet the Press program dedicated to tackling the issue of climate change in the U.S.
The episode’s focus was on how to persuade Americans that immediate action to eliminate CO2 emissions was required to prevent catastrophic hurricanes, floods, droughts, wildfires, sea level rise…from wreaking havoc across the U.S. landscape. The hour-long program was entitled “How do we explain the urgency of climate change?” .
Those who might offer dissenting information or challenges to the panelists’ viewpoints were not in attendance. Only those who agreed with the host, Chuck Todd, were permitted. This was clearly stated at the outset.
Chuck Todd (NBC News):
“We’re not going to debate climate change, the existence of it. The Earth is getting hotter, and human activity is a major cause. Period. We’re not going to give time to deniers. The science is settled even if political opinion is not.”

RIDING A MOTORCYCLE IMPROVED METRICS OF FOCUS AND DECREASED STRESS BIOMARKERS, ACCORDING TO A NEW NEUROBIOLOGICAL STUDY–
Motorcycling Decreased Stress-Measures, Similar to Light Exercise
Motorcyclists have long championed riding as their main road to stress relief and positive mental health. Today, the results of a neurobiological study conducted by a team of three researchers from UCLA’s Semel Institute for Neuroscience and Human Behavior yielded pioneering scientific evidence revealing the potential mental and physical benefits of riding. Funded by Harley-Davidson, the study found that motorcycling increased metrics of focus and attention, and decreased relative levels of cortisol, a hormonal marker of stress.
Researchers recorded participants’ brain activity and hormone levels before, during, and after motorcycling, driving a car, and resting. While riding a motorcycle, participants experienced increased sensory focus and resilience to distraction. Riding also produced an increase in adrenaline levels and heart rate, as well as a decrease in cortisol metrics – results often associated with light exercise and stress-reduction.
“Stress levels, especially among young adults, continue to rise, and people are exploring pathways to better their mental and physical health. Until recently, the technology to rigorously measure the impact of activities like motorcycling on the brain didn’t exist,” said Dr. Don Vaughn, the neuroscientist who led the research team. “The brain is an amazingly complex organ and it’s fascinating to rigorously investigate the physical and mental effects riders report.”
Results Highlights:
?Riding a motorcycle decreased hormonal biomarkers of stress by 28%
?On average, riding a motorcycle for 20 minutes increased participants’ heart rates by 11 percent and adrenaline levels by 27 percent—similar to light exercise
?Sensory focus was enhanced while riding a motorcycle versus driving a car, an effect also observed in experienced meditators vs non-meditators
?Changes in study participants’ brain activity while riding suggested an increase in alertness similar to drinking a cup of coffee
“While scientists have long-studied the relationship of brain and hormone responses to attention and stress, doing so in real-life conditions such as these is rare,” explained UCLA Professor and senior team member, Dr. Mark Cohen. “No lab experiment can duplicate the feelings that a motorcyclist would have on the open road.”
Dr. Vaughn
“The differences in participants’ neurological and physiological responses between riding and other measured activities were quite pronounced,” continued Dr. Vaughn. “This could be significant for mitigating everyday stresses.”
Research Overview
The research team monitored participants’ electrical brain activity and heart rate, as well as levels of adrenaline, noradrenaline, and cortisol. To be presented later this year, the Harley-Davidson funded study, entitled “The mental and physical effects of riding a motorcycle” measured the biological and physiological responses of more than 50 experienced motorcyclists, using mobile EEG technology.
“We’re leveraging the latest technologies as we shift our focus from exclusively motorcycles to growing ridership, so it only made sense to tap technology to explore the impact of riding itself,” said Heather Malenshek, Harley-Davidson’s Senior Vice President of Marketing & Brand. “The research findings Dr. Vaughn and his team identified helps explain what our riders have felt for the past 116 years – there’s a vitality and heightened sensory experience that comes from the freedom of riding a motorcycle. We hope their findings inspire the next generation of riders to experience these benefits along with us.”

MAJOR GUN NUT REPORT–The Case for Continued Support of the NRA
Duane Liptak is executive vice president of Magpul Industries and a member of the NRA board of directors. He’s published an open letter to the gun community at Ammoland making the case for unity and continued support of the National Rifle Association by those of us who value our gun rights.
As some have said here and in other venues, the pro-gun community is fractious and can frequently be its own worst enemy. Given the latest efforts to enact gun control legislation at the federal level — “assault weapons” bans, red flag laws, universal background checks, bump stock bans — it’s more important than ever for those of us on the pro-2A side to be pulling in the same direction.
I get that some folks will call me full of it, or claim “the NRA is in full damage control” or whatever, but this isn’t an NRA statement. This is a statement from me, a very, very zealous advocate for extreme libertarian gun rights, with an understanding of the current political landscape. Take it as you will, but please put aside your prejudices for just a moment to read, because if we can’t get everyone pushing in the same direction, we can’t beat the disarm-America-movement, because they are more than willing to get together to achieve our ruin.
In any of this commentary, I’m speaking for myself, not for the NRA.
I have to use that disclaimer, as I’m speaking out of turn, and this is MY PERSONAL understanding of the events and information, not official NRA position. I suppose some of this information could also be potentially damaging to future efforts because it lays out some reasoning and strategy, but it’s to a point right now where people need to understand some things. The NRA is not just your best defense, they are your ONLY defense. FPC does fantastic legal work, as does SAF. GOA is great at grass roots email activation and they file some amicus briefs and lawsuits. All of them have ZERO capability to interact with lawmakers in a meaningful way more than me running up to DC, which I do a couple times a year. No one else does, period, and that’s why I’m on board with helping to steer the NRA rather than bash it.
As readers here know, the NRA has come in for much criticism on the pro-2A side for its stances on a bump stock ban and red flag laws. Liptak addresses all of that and more.
Standing up and shouting “Not one more inch!” isn’t always the most effective approach in the long game that is defending and extending Second Amendment freedoms. He makes a persuasive case why — love ’em, hate ’em, or somewhere in between — the National Rifle Association is still the best chance gun rights supporters have of fending off the latest feeding frenzy of anti-gun legislation at the state and federal levels.

NEWS FROM THE CLIMATE DEPOT–The top 12 climate change ‘facts’ debunked in 2018
You’d never know it from media coverage of the climate change issue, but over the past year, several “facts” about global warming have been debunked entirely or were radically altered.
Almost all Democratic candidates who ran in the midterm elections tried to push climate change as a major issue. It didn’t work, but time after time, Democrats repeated the same half-truths and myths that have been used for years to push a radical global warming agenda.
The Global Warming Policy Forum, a London-based think-tank, supports “open and skeptical” science and policy research, as well as a balanced approach to the question of climate change. This kind of hardheaded realism is badly needed to counter the outright hysteria of climate alarmists. The GWPF came up with a list of the 12 debunked climate scares of 2018. Here are a few:
PARIS (AFP) – Earth’s surface will almost certainly not warm up four or five degrees Celsius by 2100, according to a study released Wednesday (Jan 17) which, if correct, voids worst-case UN climate change predictions.
A revised calculation of how greenhouse gases drive up the planet’s temperature reduces the range of possible end-of-century outcomes by more than half, researchers said in the report, published in the journal Nature.
This is the most persistent myth advanced by climate change hysterics – that unless we do something now about global warming, we’ll all be dead by 2100. That may have been the prediction a decade ago, but gradually, over the years, even the IPCC predictions have become less dire.
You may recall the above report by the BBC, which described how bad last year’s Atlantic hurricane season was, before commenting at the end: “A warmer world is bringing us a greater number of hurricanes and a greater risk of a hurricane becoming the most powerful category 5.” I fired off a complaint, which at first they did their best to dodge. After my refusal to accept their reply, they have now been forced to back down.
In fact, no major hurricane made landfall in the U.S. between 2005 and 2017. And the prediction that storms would become more severe just hasn’t panned out.
NASA glaciologist Jay Zwally says his new study will show, once again, the eastern Antarctic ice sheet is gaining enough ice to offset losses in the west.
The question of polar ice growth or shrinkage – either the North or the South Pole – continues to bedevil scientists. But climate hysterics have accepted as an article of faith that the ice is disappearing. And then there are the poor, starving polar bears:
The narrative behind the viral photo of a polar bear starving, reportedly thanks to climate change, has been called into question by the National Geographic photographer who took it in the first place.
Try, try again, guys.
The issue of “coral bleaching” is a favorite of hysterics. This issue also can be dropped from the alarmists’ agenda:
Coral bleaching has been a regular feature of the Great Barrier Reef for the past 400 years, with evidence of repeated mass events dating back to well before European settlement and the start of the industrial revolution.
What runs through all these myths is the political calculation that people, scared to death, will hand politicians and bureaucrats enormous power to control our lives by controlling energy. It’s really just a simple power grab played out on a planetwide scale. But as long as skeptical scientists aren’t put in jail or burned at the stake for their beliefs, that power grab will be stymied.
