SUNDAY SELF PORTRAIT– This is I, up close and personal, my first complete painting from life and first self-portrait. I wish to credit artist David Leffel for his teaching how to paint by touches of color.
Performing this self-portrait was unnerving at times, bringing sweat to my brow especially when detailing the eyes; it awakened me from sleep and so brought great joy when I succeeded in this challenge. This is a style of painting that uses darker shadows cast from intense light thus creating high contrast called chiaroscuro, the style that Rembrandt performed so well.
This portrait may not seem so important, but as an artist this work achieved a personal goal providing me assurance that I can achieve anything possible on canvas.

PPG HELPS PENSKE RACING ?GO GREEN? WITH ENVIROBASE HIGH PERFORMANCE COATINGS– STRONGSVILLE, Ohio ? March 8, 2009 ? PPG Automotive Refinish announced today they are assisting Penske Racing in converting their state-of-the-art, racecar painting facility in Mooresville, North Carolina to the environmentally-friendly PPG Envirobase? High Performance waterborne coatings system.
The conversion began with the painting of the No. 2 Miller Lite and No. 77 Mobil 1 Penske Racing Dodge Chargers, which made their debut this weekend at the Kobalt Tools 500 at Atlanta Motor Speedway. The No. 2 Miller Lite Dodge features the PPG Automotive Refinish logo on the deck lid for today?s race. Driven by Kurt Busch, the car dominated today?s race, leading 234 of 330 laps while averaging 127.562 mph and taking the checkered flag by a 0.332-second margin over runner-up Jeff Gordon.
PPG waterborne coatings specialist, Jim Skal has been working with Penske Racing staff at their headquarters in Mooresville, North Carolina on the conversion process. The switch to Envirobase? High Performance is part of Penske Racing?s on-going initiative to ?green? business practices.
PPG has shared a business relationship with Penske Racing for almost 30 years. The partnership dates back to PPG?s involvement in automobile racing and sponsorship of the PPG Cup from 1979 to 1999. Over the course of the years, PPG has become Penske Corporation?s largest supplier of refinish coatings for its racing, truck leasing and collision repair divisions. To address the environment, NASCAR, the sport?s sanctioning body, is developing an industry-wide green initiative led by Dr. Mike Lynch. The initiative will address environmental issues including reducing air emissions, refuse and lubricants recycling, building efficiencies and land preservation. It will include the sport?s various stakeholders and will seek to mobilize the NASCAR fan base in this important issue.
The PPG Envirobase High Performance system is currently in use in Europe, California and Canada where air quality regulations mandate lower volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in refinish basecoats. It is also being used by ecologically-conscious collision and automobile dealer centers throughout North America.
Automotive OEMs have been using waterborne basecoat technology for years. Use of PPG?s Envirobase High Performance waterborne coatings helps improve air quality by significantly reducing the amount of VOCs released into the atmosphere. The paint also provides the enhanced ability to match a vehicle?s original finish. Penske Racing?s teams compete in the Indy Racing League?s IndyCar Series, Grand-Am Rolex Sports Car Series and NASCAR Nationwide and Cup Series. The cars competing in these series are built, prepared and painted at the Mooresville, NC facility.

THE SASHA CHRONICLES– I’ve been getting sweet mail and thought I’d share it with you…to hear these words is precious to my soul. That’s the power of a one on one relationship with your motorcycle…and the love of the sisterhood. I’m humbled.
You are an inspiration to many ladies on two wheels including me. I would love to use your music on my little radio show with your permission. As a matter of fact, I was looking forward to hearing you on Cool Bike Rides the other day. I have been on the same gig for a few months now. Its fun. I linked you up on my website: www.ktdid.net The Bikerlady book was a great read and the new one is a fun one also. Reminds me of my old days as a hippie in the Bay Area. Its good to see someone make good use of the wonderful stuff that did come out of my era. One of the reasons I would love to pass your music around. That time was full of love, peace & happiness and a carefree sorta feeling. Something you exude. Look forward to hearing from you. If you don’t wish me to use your music… that’s just fine. I never take it personal. I would love to pass your luv around though. I have many musical friends in the business and understand. Its my local and indie friends that I love to support. –Kathy

BIKERNET CODE CORRECTION–I’ve always been bothered by the negative slogan, “Ride it like you stole it.” Stealing bikes is against the Code of the West on the highest order. But we like the notion of riding like hell and we’re looking for a substitute.
Hiway recently came up with a more politically correct version– Ride it Like You Can Fix It Yourself!
That hits the nail on the head.

BIKERNET DUCT TAPE BREAK-THROUGH–Preventing and Treating Plantar Warts– Anyone who has experienced plantar warts knows what a nuisance they can be. Caused by the human papilloma virus (HPV), they appear on the bottoms of feet as small, fleshy bumps; hard, flat growths with a rough surface and well-defined boundaries; or gray or brown lumps with tiny pinprick-size black dots.
To help avoid getting plantar warts, avoid areas known to harbor the virus, including warm, moist places such as shower floors, locker rooms and public swimming pools. Always wear shower thongs or sandals when you use a public locker room or shower, and use foot powders and change your socks often to keep feet dry. To treat plantar warts, you have a number of options:
Leave them alone. Most will disappear without treatment, sooner or later.
Try a ?paint on? solution. Look for an over-the-counter treatment containing a 40 percent salicylic acid, and apply once or twice a day for a few weeks.
Try the ?duct tape treatment.? Simply cover the warts with duct tape for six days then soak in water and rub gently with an emery board or pumice stone. You may have to repeat the process over the course of a month or two before the warts disappear, but a study published in the October 2002 Archives of Pediatrics and Adolescent Medicine found that the duct tape method worked better than having a doctor freeze the warts off with liquid nitrogen, which can be painful and cause scarring.
Try visualization. I recommend spending a few minutes each day picturing the growths shrinking. If you need help coming up with images, you can listen to audiotapes made by practitioners skilled in guided imagery and clinical hypnosis. It may be most effective to do this when waking and falling asleep. This mind-over-matter method can work remarkably well, so try it first, before resorting to acids, duct tape, lasers, or surgery.

BIKERNET AND STREET WALKER RAFFLE AWARD WINNER– I’ll take a couple of pics Sunday and work on the story. It is almost complete.
What a frickin difference. Only had it out a few minutes today when I got in from mountain climbing in AZ dead tired. Went to the store for a few brews and had almost every guy at the gas station comment on the look and the sound.
–Awesome.

PLAN TO BILL VETERANS’ INSURANCE FOR TREATMENT DRAWS FIRE– WASHINGTON ? The Obama administration is considering making veterans use private insurance to pay for treatment of combat and service-related injuries.
The plan would be an about-face on what veterans believe is a longstanding pledge by the government to pay for health care costs that result from their military service.
But in a White House meeting Monday, veterans groups apparently failed to persuade President Barack Obama ?Veterans of all generations agree that this proposal is bad for the country and bad for veterans,? said Paul Rieckhoff, executive director of Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America. ?If the president and the OMB (Office of Management and Budget) want to cut costs, they can start at AIG, not the VA.? ?It became apparent during our discussion today that the president intends to move forward with this unreasonable plan,? said Commander David K. Rehbein of The American Legion. ?He says he is looking to generate $540 million by this method, but refused to hear arguments about the moral and government-avowed obligations that would be compromised by it.? In separate comments, Republican Sen. Kit Bond of Missouri said the nation ?owes a debt to the veterans who fought and paid for our freedom.? Secretary of Veterans Affairs Eric Shinseki said at the hearing where Murray spoke that the plan was ?a consideration.? He also acknowledged that the VA?s proposed budget for next year included it as a way to increase revenue. But Shinseki told the Senate Veterans? Affairs Committee that ?a final decision hasn?t been made yet.? For veterans, that was little comfort. MCT News Service –from Sarge

WITH THAT I’M OUTTA HERE–I don’t like to leave the news on a down note. I scratched a piece from the New York Times that hammered H-D about their profits and lending practices.

I don’t think it’s entirely fair to hammer companies. They tried to help people buy homes or motorcycles. It’s a personal responsibility issue. If I buy something, sign da papers and step up, then I need to honor that effort and pay the bills. If we do, the whole program keeps running, but if we try to dodge the responsibility, we’ll kill the company in the process. What have we accomplished?

It’s the media killing the economy. Quit watching the news for a week and we’ll be back in business. Every company on the planet, except for banks and insurance companies, are working their asses off to stay afloat. I’ll keep buying H-D parts, all the loans are paid off, so I’m debt free except for the mortgage. The rest of the bank account will be spent on whiskey and women. Am I on track or what?
Ride Forever,
–Bandit
