Motorcycle group protests actions by State Patrol–SEATTLE – A motorcycle rights group is demanding answers from the Washington State Patrol.

They say during an annual rally at the Capitol this year, a state trooper recorded the license plate numbers of those attending.

The sergeant was seen wandering through the parking lot and using a voice recorder to take down the license plate numbers from motorcycles. At one point he even backs into the bushes to get a better look at the tags.

“Seeing an officer from the State Patrol in the bushes, doing this is just shocking,’ said Martin Fox, an attorney for the motorcycle rights group ABATE.

Fox says ABATE members were inside the Capitol building, meeting with their legislators when the trooper recorded the license tags.

“My concern is anyone going to the Legislature to have their views heard are being put on a list and it’s not what we do in America,” said Fox.

The State Patrol says rival gang members were seen riding onto the Capitol campus and this recording was just good police work. “Motorcycle gangs do have a record of violence against each other, and if something broke out it would be nice to have a record of who was here,” said Sgt. Freddy Williams.

“They want to know why it was being done and where this information was going,” said Fox.

“I can see how it might be cause for concern, but your license is public record, public knowledge, it’s there for everyone to look at,” said Williams.

License plate numbers are there for everyone to see, but even the State Patrol acknowledges that if you saw someone recording your plate number, you’d want to know why and just how that information would be used.

UNCLE MONKEY REPORT–What?s in the box?A friend of mine is anxiously awaiting the arrival of his brand new Road King Classic. He called the dealer to tell him that he wanted to keep the box that the bike comes in. It?s not an uncommon request as many riders ask for it. I just don?t understand it.

Often before the bike is even fired up for the first time at the dealership, the person has had a sundry list of parts and accessories installed on the bike. The bike becomes an extension of themselves and their personalities.

The box, it would seem, becomes worthless. (I?m sure all you guys who bought a 100th anniversary ?collector? bike and left it in the crate will one day be able to recoup the financial investment.) More often then not the bike is ridden home, the box collapsed so that it fits into the backseat of the car, or worse yet laid on the floor with the bike loaded on top of it. Nice tire marks.

Once home these boxes are tucked away in a dark corner of the garage never to be seen again, much like that chopper you vowed you?d ride until the bitter end. Others are hung with care on the garage wall for all to see and to collect dents and scuffs from the kids playing, spray can paint tests, and oil and grease smudges before being pulled off to be thrown under the wife?s car while you repair it.

I?m not saying it?s wrong, I?m just saying I don?t understand it.

COLLECTOR CARS TO BE OFFERED IN ALL SHAPES AND SIZES AT ANNUAL CLASSIC CAR AUCTION OF MICHIGAN–From pre-war toy trucks, to Evel Knievel?s personal motorcycle, to a nine-ton 1950 Flxible Motor Coach, RM?s ?Classic Car Auction of Michigan? event will offer a wide selection of rare collector vehicles at the Rock Financial Showplace, Novi, Michigan, April 25 & 26

Ypsilanti, Michigan – March 24, 2009 ? The classic car hobby transcends generations of collectors who enjoy the thrill of the hunt for memorable cars and trucks of their younger days, many of which can be found at auction events such as RM?s ?Classic Car Auction of Michigan? event at the Rock Financial Showplace, Novi, Michigan, April 25 & 26.

One of the largest collector vehicles ever to be offered by RM is a factory-built 1950 Flxible Private Luxury Motor Coach which will be up for bids at this event along with hundreds of other unique cars, trucks and motorcycles.

Easily recognized for their bulbous streamlined bodies and split windshields, the fifties era Flxible often made cameos in many famous Hollywood movies such as The Wild One, Vertigo, North by Northwest and Key Largo.

This remarkably original recreational vehicle on offer at the Novi event is one of only five examples built and was designed for its first owners the Slawik family at cost of $20,700 in 1950. Most notably, this is not a converted passenger bus but a purposely designed luxury coach that represents the epitome of 1950s travelling elegance. In 1958 the Flxible was parked in proper heated storage until it was acquired by its present owners in 1995.

The Flxible retains its original Buick eight-cylinder engine and Koehler generator and is equipped with air brakes, power steering, a roof-mounted air conditioner. The lavishly designed interior features mahogany paneling and stainless steel trim. Other accoutrements include a full galley, private intercom, Pullman-style bathroom, special lighting and a circa-1956 Chrysler Hi-Fi radio/record player. Benefiting from careful ownership, this unique, two-owner land cruiser runs and drives as new and has recorded a mere 24,000 original miles.

For the two-wheel collector, this event will offer a one-of-a-kind motorcycle custom-built for the legendary American daredevil, Robert Craig ?Evel? Knievel. More than just a showman, Knievel was one of the highest paid entertainers at the time and rewarded himself with numerous luxury cars, jets, yachts and of course, motorcycles. One of his favorite rides was a personalized 1980 Harley-Davidson Shovelhead Golden Eagle that features genuine 24K gold plating and inlays. This special bike is being offered complete with a copy of the bill of sale from Evel Knievel and photos.

Some of the smaller auction lots include several highly prized pre-WWII metal toys produced by the Buddy L and Steelcraft companies such as an early 1920 International Harvester Truck, a rare 1920 Tri-Motor US Mail Plane and an operating 1928 Little Jim Mack Steam Shovel. The ten examples offered at this event are from a private collection and have been properly restored to their original condition.

In support of Michigan’s rich automotive history, representatives from the MotorCities National Heritage organization will be on site to share the latest news on the many exciting events held in Michigan during Autopalooza August including the Meadow Brook Concours, Festival of Speed & Style and the Woodward Dream Cruise. www.autopaloozaaugust.com

The Classic Car Auction of Michigan weekend kicks off with a vehicle preview on Friday, April 24th from 3pm to 8pm. Doors open for the auction at 9am on Saturday and Sunday, with the auction action starting at 10am each day, and ending at 8pm Saturday and 4pm on Sunday.

Ending

ANOTHER JAMMED WEEK–I did something unique this week. As an admitted mad man, I set goals weekly. My first major goal this year was to publish my next book, but not just any book. I’m going to begin a series of books based on one character, Chance Hogan.

kimmy daytona
Kimmy will be a featured bartender at the Broken Spoke this year. Tell her you’re from Bikernet, for a special deal.

I wrote this bastard beginning three years ago in the Horse in monthly installments about the adventures of Vince and Chance, then decided to modify it. That stumbling obstacle was similar to turning a long Denver Chopper into a motocross bike. It wasn’t easy. Last summer I spent a long weekend rolling through chapters, while locked in a mountain cabin, and I roamed close to the manuscript I wanted, but not close enough. Over SuperBowl weekend I snuck away to Primm Nevada, thanks to brother Joe, and locked myself in a room for 4 days (I did escape for the SB party–helluva game). I returned home, attempted to back up my computer and lost everything.

Okay, so I could have fired myself, gone on a drunken rampage and shot all the animals in the headquarters, or just buckled down and hit the keys once more–knowing full well that the next run at each chapter would be even better. That brings us up to date. This week I hit the Monday and Tuesday Bikernet content hard , so I could turn the phone off on Wednesday and hammer through one chapter after another. Thursday is news day, do-or-die. Friday and Saturday I’ll hide out again. Hopefully by Sunday I’ll be in good shape again.

StreetwalkerGootie
Don’t miss Gootie’s StreetWalker Exhaust tech on the home page. It’s got character, or more than one..

I’m no Tom Zimmeroff, when it comes to writing skills, but I want this to be my best goddamn book yet. Then next week I’ll meet with Chris Kallas and discuss the cover art. I would like to have printed copies sizzling in my hands by June. There’s the goal for this weekend.

kb tire on bike
There’s the Black Bike Wheel on the Paughco Factory Racer frame with Avon Tyres. I’m still working on the tank, below. Not sure it’s straight.

kb tank on bike

Next week I will deliver on a 5-Ball Factory racing report. I’ve made considerable progress in the shop. We have two engine techs boiling to the surface, one from Rev Tech and one on the massive JIMS 131-inch monster. We’ll bring you an I-beam frame built custom from Conspiracy Cycles in Michigan and a package arrived from Scotty today. He lives on the road and we’re going to devote a section on Bikernet to his road tales. So hang on. There’s never a dull moment on Bikernet.
