Hey,
It’s a crazy day. It acts like summer’s coming one day, then we shift back to winter. We’ve touted this being the year of the veteran for Bikernet and veteran support activities pop up constantly. We came across two this week, and you’ll spot one that Shirely Zanelli supported with a custom leather seat, right here in the Sunday Post. We are going to bring you info on veteran’s support groups as fast as we run across it. Check each one out and give ’em all the support you can.
I received a report this morning that Iraqi military took an offensive move in Basra last night and kicked some ass. So let’s hit the news and say a prayer for our brothers in the middle east.

BIKERNET’S YEAR OF THE SPORTSTER KICKED OFF LAST WEEK WITH TWO PROJECT BUILDS–Regarding the ’72 restoration Chris reported on his first installment, ” The bike will sort of look like a ’70 or earlier model since I put boots on the forks which they stopped doing in ’71.
“My mind has been doing some wondering for the next installment. The project has spanned so much time that it’s hard to remember some of the sequences. I started to put it together and tore it down twice (gumption traps), and started over.
“My thoughts are it will be the tale of what I went through sprinkled with some tips and shots of it going together. The intent is to help others from falling into traps and to hopefully entertain.
“I’m sort of embarrassed by the whole thing but thought it’s a good story, then I just read about a guy who finished a bike after it sat incomplete for 30 years.”
–CGK

His effort and Paul’s with the Nortster inspired me to look around for a 1969 XLCH to restore. That was my first H-D. Fatbob already found parts, but I’ll look around for a complete bike.–Bandit

PIRELLI TIRES ON BIKERNET, THE ROGUE REPORT– Good article on the Pirelli Tires. I am happy to see you also say you would be checking out some others, So I am going to add my two cent?s worth. Here’s a quote from your article:
We made several photo stops and I took the opportunity to quiz the engineers. They told me that stock OEM tires are designed to last 5-6000 miles and the Night Dragons would survive almost the same, depending predominately on whether the pilot is an aggressive rider on not.
DAMN : If I had to change tires every 5-6000 miles that would be about every two months. I was with our mutual friend Larry Curik and bitchin’ about having to change a tire before going to Sturgis a few years ago.
I was getting around 9000 from the factory tires on my 2004 FLHTI He arranged for me to try a set of Continental Mile Masters and here is what I wrote about them. OH! I had well over 11,000 miles on them when I changed them.
Yes, that is what I still run on my personal motorcycle. I hope you will share this information in your tire comparison article.

AUSTRALIAN ECONOMIC REPORT AND J&P MOTORCYCLE MUSEUM ARTICLE COMING TO BIKERNET–Last year we did do a story on the whole ride but only gave a para to the National Motorcycle Museum and two pics. Your liking for longer pieces became crystal clear to me with the description of my write up on the new Fat Bob as, “The world’s shortest bike test”, and given that the museum is – I think – of significant interest to bikers everywhere, I figured that a longer piece would be fitting.
Our motorcycle industry is still absolutely booming with sales growing every quarter. Much of our economy is tied in with China who buy shitloads of our mining products, coal, iron ore, etc. Today’s national newspaper carried the story that as long as China is okay, our economy will be. We used to be tied much more closely to the USA but things have shifted, which currently, is a damn good thing.
Cheers mate,

VETERAN’S CHARITY CURRENTLY BEING STUDIED BY BIKERNET REPORTER–
I received your email address from Meghan Defreeuw at OKERS IN Dallas.
We are a 501(c)(3) established in Arizona and working out of Dallas, Texas at this time. We are a national organization designed to assist the reintegration of combat veterans back into their homes, family and community. We do not, like many organizations today, only focus on Iraq and Afghanistan veterans. We address our programs and activities to all veterans. We have found that we are assisting Vietnam, Korean and WWII veterans to ?finally? ?Come Home? by their involvement with the ?young? veterans.
Our primary intent is to bring together many different organizations in a unified effort, to work together, to provide services for returning veterans. We honor their service and extend a ?Welcome Home.? It has been amazing to see the reaction of Vietnam veterans and Korean War and WWII veterans when we give them our card with ?Welcome Home? on the back and say to them; ?Welcome Home and Thank You for Your Service.? For many, it is the first time someone has done this.
We are connected to universities, community mental health organizations and businesses to provide the services they need to come home.
One of our current projects is to deploy toll free numbers for veterans to call to ?just talk? with one of their brothers and sisters in arms. No psychologists or ?trying to fix? them, just talk. It has saved several lives already.
We are planning a ride across the US (?The Patriot Run?), coast to coast, to bring awareness to the veterans and their families? needs and service. We would like to organize this under the many independent bike shops rather than under just Harley Davidson of a large manufacturer. The ride is planned for next Spring and will run from Boston to LA and back, southern route to the west and northern route back East. We have been talking and planning this for about six months and will need to step up the planning soon.
We would like your involvement and support. We have implemented many programs to assist the healing of physical, social, emotional, cognitive, and spiritual wounds of war. We believe that veterans are not crazy, they are just acting normally to a crazy situation.
Please take some time to look at our website www.uswelcomehome.oom, there is a link to an interview with the ?Veterans Network? on the home page and a link to a play ?Ward 57? by the Florida Stage. They may be of interest to provide more perspective on what we are up to.
I look forward to your return email, and hopefully we might be able to work together to support our veterans, all of them. I really like the idea to declare a ?Year of the Veteran? and would like to be an active part of it.
‘Warrior Care.”

THE “NATE” MEMORIAL RUN SUPPORTED BY BADASSED SEATS– I was contacted by Tina in regards to making a donation toward a memorial benefit run, for disabled/disadvantaged American Veterans. The event is being run in memory of a marine, killed in action in Iraq, August 1, 2005. LCPL Daniel “Nate” Deyarmin, www.dndfund.org.
I saw that they would also take items to raffle. So I offered to make them a seat, thinking it would hopefully make a little bit more for them than the hundred bucks they originally requested.
The event is set for,
June 8, 2008
At TALLMADGE HIGH SCHOOL
484 East Ave.,
TALLMADGE, OHIO
“I would like to invite everyone who can, to attend,” said Tina Underwood. “Proceeds go to our disabled and disadvantaged veterans. So far they have raised over $50,000 over the last three years. They have housed 22 homeless veterans, made house and utility payments for veterans who were on the verge of foreclosure, paid rent, bought a furnace, and taken 100s of CDs and hand held video games to Bethesda Naval hospital in Maryland. They?ve even paid for a family to travel to be with their son who was severely wounded in Iraq. Bottom line is, if a veteran calls, they are there to help.”
I hope that we can raffle off this seat for a ridiculous amount of money.
If you like the seat, buy a ticket.
If you don?t like the seat, buy a ticket.
If your lard ass won?t fit on the seat, buy a ticket. Some guy with a smaller ass will buy it from you!
If you don?t own a bike, buy a ticket. You can use the frickin? thing as a door stop.

THE TIP OF THE ICEBERG– Fellow Riders and Freedom Fighters: Last week I warned you that something was up… “Something is up … pass it on” …about the same time Gannett News Service published this in USA Today: “Motorcyclist deaths spike as helmet laws loosen”
As did many of you, I responded to this article: “Open Letter to Gannett DJs John Yaukey and Robert Benincasa” This was, I’m afraid, just the crack in the ice. And here is the the tip of the iceberg: http://ldrlongdistancerider.com/TipOfTheIceberg.html I have put you on notice. That is all I have the resources to do. What happens next is up to you… Speaking strictly for myself and no other individuals or organizations,

J.J. SOLARI THREATENS TO DELIVER BOOKS TO BIKERNET– I have included a previous e-mail in order to install your address into the firefox browser I switched to. What you are reading now, or what you are having an underling read to you while he or she paints your toenails is the real message.
There was no response when, after you demanded that I give you free signed books and then commanded that I take a tour of your personal “Ming’s House of Happy Happy Testicle Fun” asian-themed pleasure palace, I noticed there was no further discussion of the matter.
You probly think I take this personal. I do not. Cecily not grinding the coffee beans to within two microns of my ground coffee beans diameter demands?….That I take personal. So I say to you again; if you expect me to ever deliver these books you are going to have to have to actually provide me with a location. on earth. Not in the opium-trance galaxy.
Thank you.
Sincerely,

WOMAN SAYS TSA FORCED PIERCINGS REMOVAL– A Texas woman who said she was forced to remove a nipple ring with pliers in order to board an airplane called Thursday for an apology by federal security agents and a civil rights investigation.
“I wouldn’t wish this experience upon anyone,” Mandi Hamlin said at a news conference. “My experience with TSA was a nightmare I had to endure. No one deserves to be treated this way.”
Hamlin, 37, said she was trying to board a flight from Lubbock to Dallas on Feb. 24 when she was scanned by a Transportation Security Administration agent after passing through a larger metal detector without problems. The female TSA agent used a handheld detector that beeped when it passed in front of Hamlin’s chest, the Dallas-area resident said. Hamlin said she told the woman she was wearing nipple piercings. The agent then called over her male colleagues, one of whom said she would have to remove the jewelry, Hamlin said.
Hamlin said she could not remove them and asked whether she could instead display her pierced breasts in private to the female agent. But several other male officers told her she could not board her flight until the jewelry was out, she said.
She was taken behind a curtain and managed to remove one bar-shaped piercing but had trouble with the second, a ring. “Still crying, she informed the TSA officer that she could not remove it without the help of pliers, and the officer gave a pair to her,” said Hamlin’s attorney, Gloria Allred, reading from a letter she sent Thursday to the director of the TSA’s Office of Civil Rights and Liberties. Allred is a well-known Los Angeles lawyer who often represents high-profile claims.
Applying pliers to the torso of a mannequin that had a peach-colored bra with the rings on it, Hamlin showed reporters at the news conference how she took off the second ring. She said she heard male TSA agents snickering as she took out the ring. She was scanned again and was allowed to board even though she still was wearing a belly button ring.
“After nipple rings are inserted, the skin can often heal around the piercing, and the rings can be extremely difficult and painful to remove,” Allred said in the letter.
TSA officials said they are investigating to see whether its policies were followed. “Our security officers are well-trained to screen individuals with body piercings in sensitive areas with dignity and respect while ensuring a high level of security,” the agency said in a statement.
On its Web site, the TSA warns that passengers “may be additionally screened because of hidden items such as body piercings, which alarmed the metal detector.”
“If you are selected for additional screening, you may ask to remove your body piercing in private as an alternative to a pat-down search,” the site says. Hamlin would have accepted a “pat-down” had it been offered, Allred said. If an alarm does sound, “until that is resolved, we’re not going to let them go through the checkpoint, no matter what they’re wearing or where they’re wearing it,” said TSA spokesman Dwayne Baird in Salt Lake City. People routinely pass through security wearing wedding rings without problems, and it might take a larger bit of metal to trigger an alarm, Baird said.
Hamlin filed a complaint, but the TSA’s customer service manager at the Lubbock airport concluded the screening was handled properly, Allred said. Hamlin wants an apology from the TSA and an investigation by the agency’s civil rights office.
Allred said she might consider legal action if the TSA does not apologize. Hamlin was publicly humiliated and has “undergone an enormous amount of physical pain to have the nipple rings reinserted” because of scar tissue, Allred said.
Hamlin said her piercings have never set off an airport metal detector. “The conduct of TSA was cruel and unnecessary,” Allred wrote. “The last time that I checked a nipple was not a dangerous weapon.”

BIKERNET TECH QUESTION ANSWERED– I’ve looked all over the internet and can’t find an answer. So, I ask the man with more motorcycle knowledge or contacts that anyone else I know.
I’m looking for a diagram that shows the oiling system on a 1960 Ironhead engine. I’ve got manuals back to ’70, but I don’t know if it is the same or not. The bike is a friend of mine’s and a small hack shop said they rebuilt it, but failed to ever hook any lines up and run the bike. He got completely screwed over, but that’s another story.
If you know how the lines are to be run, or know where I can find a diagram, I would greatly appreciate it.
— Matt Holman
mattholman@yahoo.com
I dug out my ’59-’69 Sportster manual and helped him out, but I often refer tech questions to Pablo, our factory rep, who often add valuable info. Here’s what Pablo added, “1959 to 1976 Oil system’s are very similar in operation and hose routing. Early pumps are gear driven. In 1977 they went to gerotor type gears. So the 1970 manual should be a good reference for hose routing etc.
“There has been a few changes from ’62 to ’76, gear and pump body changes.”

TWO WHEEL EXPRESS PASSING THROUGH MISSISSIPPI–Next Louisiana, Houston, then Florida near Maimi. If you need a bike moved, hauled or transported. Mike will take care of it.

IT’S JACK DANIELS TIME–Yesterday was beautiful and I kicked off my S&S Tech on rebuilding Super E carbs until noon. Then I strapped on a tool belt and climbed ladders all after noon to replace our out door security lighting system. A Bikernet reader/electrician, Larry Henry, slipped me advice while tuning his Accurate Engineering Panhead for the El Diablo run to Mexico in a couple of weeks.

The Black gang dogs, Tank and Cash, sunned themselves and critiqued my construction methods. I’ve got one more light to go. We’ll see if it don’t burn the building down in the process. First of next week a Big Boar Batter will arrive and I’ll get the 1928 Shovelhead running for the first time in a year. Oh, I keep forgetting to announce that D&D has launched a dealer direct program. Check it out.

So last night as the sun drifted from the sky a chill emerged and I believe it rained. It’s cold today, but I’ll whisper an American Indian blessing for the sun to return.
Next week Bikernet will smoke with new material: The J&P Museum report from Doc, my carb rebuild and we may kick off a D&D/Zippers tech, I’m writing a Pierce 1906 feature, Chopper Dave’s scooter, Matt Kimmels bobber, shit I can’t keep up. Let’s party.
Ride Forever,
