More BAD SHERIFFS, Southeastern Ill. sheriff accused of drug dealing– SHAWNEETOWN, Ill. — Federal prosecutors contend the longtime sheriff of Gallatin County in southeastern Illinois sold marijuana, often while on duty.

Raymond Martin was arrested Monday and made an initial court appearance on three counts of marijuana distribution and two counts of carrying a firearm while trafficking drugs.

Martin has been sheriff since 1990.The complaint accuses the 46-year-old sheriff of distributing more than 1,100 grams of marijuana between April 27 and May 11.

A judge has appointed a federal public defender for Martin. She hasn’t returned a message left for her Tuesday seeking comment.

A woman who answered Martin’s home phone Tuesday said Martin had no comment.

Federal prosecutors have charged Raymond Martin, the longtime sheriff of Gallatin County in southeastern Illinois, with selling marijuana, often while on duty. Martin, 46, was arrested Monday on three counts of marijuana distribution and two counts of carrying a firearm while trafficking in drugs. The charges say he distributed more than 1,100 grams of marijuana from April 27 to May 11. Neither he nor his lawyer could be reached for comment.

Sheriff Raymond M. Martin has been the law for nearly 20 years in a struggling southern Illinois county. But federal prosecutors say he’s been breaking it lately by peddling pounds of pot, some seized by his own department, often in uniform and from his patrol vehicle.

GUN LAW QUESTION OF THE WEEK– My wife and myself will be coming to Irvine to see our Son and Daughter-in-law and I was wondering what the law is in California.

I have a permit to carry in Virginia ,and would like to know if it would be valid in California?

When on the road I just feel safer when I have it with me.

–Mike E.

At one time permits crossed borders, but I?m not sure that?s the case. I?ve been told that it?s easier to obtain a permit in small counties, so don?t try in LA or San Fran. Take your permit to a police station and ask. I?ll drop your question in the news. I?ll bet you receive a knowledgeable response.–Bandit

VINTAGE BIKE RACING IS ALIVE AT BARBER MOTORSPORTS–WERA Vintage is racing at Barber Motorsports park this Saturday 5/23. The event is sponsored by Fast From The Past http://www.fastfromthepast.com/servlet/Store Front , and they will be paying out in numerous classes. $6000 is up for grabs. Racers from all over the country are converging in Alabama. FFTP owner Jim Hinshaw is local to the Atlanta Area, and a WERA Vintage National Champion in several classes. Kudo?s to Jim and his crew.

There will be plenty of racing at Barber (just east of Birmingham) this weekend. A full Vintage schedule on Saturday, with the modern ?fast bikes? running Sunday, and the World Class museum open both days.

On another note?.there’s AMA Vintage Motorcycle Days at Mid-Ohio in July. I?ve never been, but I hear it?s a huge event. A full three day schedule of Vintage racing is a tradition there, along with ALL the other stuff??Due to some unfortunate circumstances, The Vintage Roadracing Sanctioning body that has supported the AMA for this event in the past is out of the picture, and WERA is stepping up to the plate to run the AMA Vintage Grand Championship Roadraces at Mid-Ohio. Vintage classes will be eligible for AMA Championships and AMA # 1 plates.

Get that vintage bike out of the barn, and on to the track!

BREAKFAST AT BANDIT’S CANTINA–While enjoying an Early morning breakfast in a northern Arizona caf?, four elderly ranchers were discussing everything from cattle, horses, and weather to how things used to be in the ‘good old days.’

Eventually the conversation moved on to their spouses. One gentleman turned to the fellow on his right and asked, “Roy, aren’t you and your bride celebrating your 50th wedding anniversary soon?”

“Yup, we sure are,” Roy replied.

“Well, are you gonna do anything special to celebrate?” another man asked.

The old gentleman pondered this for a moment, then replied, “For our 25th anniversary, I took Bea to Tucson. Maybe for our 50th, I’ll go down there and get her.”

GM gives the pink slip to 1,100 dealerships–General Motors notified 1,100 dealers that it will not renew their franchise contracts, as the automotive giant looks to restructure in the wake of the economic recession and slumping new car sales.

Unlike Chrysler, which cut 789 dealer locations effective nearly immediately, GM will follow a wind-down process, allowing the targeted dealerships to gradually reduce vehicle inventory, parts and staff through to October 2010, when most of their franchise contracts expire.

According to GM, the dealerships closing are underperforming and make up a very small sales volume.

Combined with about 470 Saturn, Hummer and Saab dealers GM is looking to divest itself of, the company plans to eliminate 2,369 ? or 40 percent ? of its 6,000 dealers by the end of 2010.

In a press statement, GM said, ?While additional cuts will be made, we believe the vast majority, over 90 percent, of the remaining dealers will be offered a chance to remain with GM. However, specific dealer issues, further attrition and additional possible dealer network actions are expected to bring the number of future GM dealers to around 3,600 by the end of 2010.?

?We have said from the beginning that our dealers are not a problem but an asset for General Motors,? said Mark LaNeve, GM vice president of Sales Service and Marketing. ?However it is imperative that a healthy, viable GM have a healthy, viable dealer body that can not only survive but prosper during cyclical downturns. It is obvious that almost all parts of GM, including the dealer body, must get smaller and more efficient.?

Also unlike Chrysler, which made the names of its closing dealership public as part of its court filings, GM is not releasing the names of any dealers targeted to close. As independently owned businesses, dealer owners will make their own decisions if and when they want to make this information public.

The dealerships being cut by GM and Chrysler employ about 187,000, the National Automobile Dealers Association estimates.

ON A POSITIVE NOTE, HOUSE APPROVES HEALTH INSURANCE PROTECTIONS FOR MOTORCYCLISTS–The U.S. House of Representatives voted 422 to 3 on March 31st to pass HR 1253, the ?Health Insurance Restrictions and Clarifications Act of 2009?; bipartisan legislation to strengthen health insurance coverage for injuries incurred while participating in legal recreational and transportation activities, such as motorcycling, riding ATVs, snowmobiling and horseback riding.

While the language falls short of closing the loophole that allows insurance companies to deny benefits to motorcycle accident victims, it does prevent them from concealing such coverage exclusions by requiring them to be ?explicit and clear? in fully disclosing benefit limitations and restrictions ?in a form that is easily understandable? to the enrollee in advance of the point of sale.

The bill now goes to the Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions, and concerned riders are encouraged to contact their U.S. Senators in support of the legislation.

So, I run the toolbit to the round pc. in the chuck. Backoff a little, put the scale in between the tool bit and the round pc. in the chuck, vertical to the world. Use a very slight pressure on the scale by turning the tool bit into the scale and work pc. If the scale is straight up & down (vertical) yer centered. Start makin chips, nice spirals of course. Poker Run Legality may clear up in Palmetto State–Despite the controversy in Myrtle Beach, it’s not all bad news coming out of South Carolina this month. The SC Senate Judiciary Committee approved legislation Tuesday May 12th that would revise the state’s 207-year-old gambling laws, which ban “any game with cards or dice.” Never mind that the bills won’t pass this year because the legislative sesson is over tomorrow, but at least some legislators can see where banning all games with cards or dice is not in the best interest of the charities in the Palmetto State.

Currently, the state’s centuries-old gaming laws are enforced at the discretion of the local law enforcement agency and mostlly only when someone complains. That sets up law enforcement as tools of retribution and revenge; something Senate President Pro Tem Glenn McConnell called “just flat wrong.”

“We don’t want our police officers busting down people’s doors, of family and friends who are playing Rummy or nickel poker or strip poker,” said Sen. Jake Knotts, R-West Columbia, who quickly added, amid laughter, that he doesn’t advocate the latter. “This is to separate the criminal gambler from a person who just wants to play card games with some friends.”

A separate proposal, approved 14-6, would ask voters whether the state constitution should be changed to allow nonprofit groups to hold a limited number of raffles yearly. Currently, the only legal raffle is the state lottery.

South Carolina’s Lions clubs have lost roughly $500,000 since last year, when state law enforcement officers – responding to a complaint – threatened a Tega Cay club that was raffling off a motorcycle, said state executive director Gregg Turner, among just two full-time Lions workers left after two layoffs.

He said he advised the state’s 160 clubs to cease all raffles out of fear members would get arrested. The drastic drop in revenue has caused a backlog of residents needing the hearing aids, eye surgeries, and vision and hearing screenings the money provides, Turner said.

Traditional motorcycle poker runs, which has historically raised tens of thousands of dollars for local and statewide charities have been severly curtailed as a result of an Attorney General’s ruling that the events were illegal under the current State statute.

TIP UP THE SOAPBOX–I have a problem with our regulatory society, and I’ve been grappling with a stellar way to get the freedom-oriented message across. I was just speaking with the lovely, shapely Sin Wu. While staring at her cleavage I told her America was always independent, and made up of hard working, self reliant and resourceful individuals, but no more.

Now if we trip in the street somebody gets sued. And nobody wants to work for anything. It’s all turned upside down. We don’t need gun laws we need education, training that leads to respect. I think about 1,500 are injured with guns annually. We don’t need laws, we need education. It’s like helmets, train folks to understand motorcycles and safety. We don’t need to force folks to wear helmets constantly. In fact if we want to save lives, make car drivers wear helmets. About 5,000 die a year in motorcycle crashes, 20 percent due to head injuries. Some accidents are caused by helmets. Many neck injuries are caused by helmets. But wait, 44,000 people die each year in car accidents, 90 percent head injuries. How much sense does that make?

Did you notice the Right to Repair bill? We should have the opportunity to repair and or modify anything we want. But we need access to education and training. We don’t need the EPA to attack everything. Besides, what does that say to the rest of the world? Why would they want to take on our burdensome system with our myriad of regulations? What’s free or even democratic about that? We need a new tack for this sailboat. We’re headed in the wrong direction. How can we get this word across?

Have a helluva weekend.

Ride Forever,

–Bandit
