Moose Jaw Toy Run 13 Sept 08 085

FROM THE UNCLE MONKEY ARCHIVES–I wave. It is a habit that my wife says I need to stop but I still do it. It started growing up on the farm where everyone waved to everyone they met on the road. For the record I only waved to people I knew so no that wasn’t me waving from the tractor at you, a complete stranger, like an idiot.

As a biker I wave to my fellow riders as a sign of respect. A bond is shared between me and the other rider out on the road, battling cages and the elements. I’m not picky; I wave to everyone on two wheels even though I?ve been told as a Harley rider I should only wave to other Harleys. I say all riders deserve respect. They are dealing with the same things that I do so I wave to everyone. We seem to understand the brotherhood of the road.

There are lots of riders who don?t wave back. Perhaps they are new riders who have yet to be taken under the wing of a veteran rider who will share the codes of the road with them. They don?t have someone to teach him or her the rights and wrongs. Mind you after watching more then a few people bobbing and weaving as they drag their feet across the intersection I’m not so sure I want them to remove their white knuckled hands from the handlebars to wave to me. Maybe my wife is right. There just is simply too many of us on the roads now a days for me to be waving to everyone we meet.

I try to get a few clicks on my bike most days after work. After battling a back injury for a couple of years now it’s nice to be out back on the road waving to my fellow riders. My route usually includes at least a couple passes down the main drag in my small town. I’m amazed at all the new bikes I see standing in the parking lot of Tim Horton’s, Canada’s premier coffee chain. It is nice to have a good cup of Joe after riding and there is never a shortage of people in the parking lot. My favourite is the couple who show up decked out head to toe in full Harley riding gear including chaps … driving their Ford Harley Davidson truck. I try not to judge them but I think they are missing out on something. So if you are wondering who that is waving at you, it?s just me saying ?Hello good friend.?

Ex-FHP trooper accused of sexual battery–Police say he coerced driver after accident.

PALM SPRINGS – A former Florida Highway Patrol trooper arrested on allegations that he followed a woman to her home, made her strip naked and then coerced her to have sex with him to avoid a traffic citation or a trip to jail — was ordered held on $105,000 bond today.

Ariel D. Valentin, 31, was taken into custody at about 2 p.m. Friday after an investigation into the alleged May 13 assault. He resigned from the FHP on Wednesday after five years in Troop L, which covers six counties, including Palm Beach and Broward.

According to police, the woman said Valentin pulled her over after she was involved in a minor car accident near her home in Palm Springs. After he told the other driver to leave the scene, the woman said she told Valentin that both drivers were fine and she wanted to leave, pointing to her home nearby.

She said Valentin asked her whether she minded that he search her and she agreed, getting out of her car and turning her pockets inside-out, according to police. He said he needed to search her further and suggested going into her home, according to the interview.

The woman told police she was “bawling her eyes out” because her registration was expired and she did not want to get in trouble. She said Valentin told her “stop crying and don’t worry, you are not going to get in trouble. Just do what I say.”

Once they were inside her house, the woman said Valentin told her to remove her clothes and then coerced her into having sex, according to police. She also told police that she felt like an idiot, but was “scared of going to jail” and at one point in the encounter asked Valentin what was going on.

The woman retrieved a used condom from her toilet after Valentin left. She went to the hospital the following day, where she contacted police and a doctor performed a rape examination.

When first interviewed about the incident, Valentin told Palm Springs police that he simply followed the woman to her nearby home and issued her a citation. He said he did not enter the house.

When police informed him that they recovered a used condom, Valentin still denied having sex with the woman, but later said the two had consensual sex.

He is charged with sexual battery and bribery and was being held at the Palm Beach County Jail.

BRYAN SMITH RIDES HARLEY-DAVIDSON TO SPRINGFIELD MILE WIN–Coolbeth Bounces Back to Take Second in AMA Grand National Twins Opener.

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (May 24, 2009) ? Moroney’s Harley-Davidson/Screamin’ Eagle rider Bryan Smith made a last-lap pass to win the opening round of the 2009 AMA Grand National Twins Championship on the Springfield Mile at the Illinois State Fairgrounds. The defending Grand National Twins champion, Harley-Davidson Screamin’ Eagle factory rider Kenny Coolbeth, finished second, trailing Smith at the finish line by just 0.046 seconds.

Smith was the top qualifier for the 26-lap main, and was in the mix during the first 20 laps, during which the race was red-flagged to a stop once for rain and twice for crashes. The final red flag for a crash set up a five-lap sprint for the win. Coolbeth had been stuck at the back of the pack on a motorcycle that was not running well, but after the break the performance of his factory Harley-Davidson XR750 cleared up. On the re-start Coolbeth joined a lead pack that included Smith, Blue Springs Harley-Davidson/Screamin’ Eagle rider Jared Mees, Latus Harley-Davidson/Screamin? Eagle rider Joe Kopp, Chris Carr Racing/Lancaster Harley-Davidson rider Chris Carr and Nick Cummings. Smith gambled by taking a low line on the backstretch of the last lap to draft past the pack, and carried his lead out of the fourth turn with enough momentum to hold off Coolbeth. Carr finished third, followed by Mees, Cummings and Kopp.

?We just came up a little short at the end,? said Coolbeth, who trailed Smith by half a bike length at the finish. ?But considering how things were going for us tonight, second place is a great finish this time. For most of the race the motorcycle was running poorly and I was just riding around at the back trying to stay out of everyone?s way, and then after that last red flag, the Screamin? Eagle Harley-Davidson felt great and I was back in it. Bryan made a great move and I didn?t quite have enough to get him back.?

Smith previously won at Springfield in 2006.

?My team gave me a great Harley-Davidson to ride tonight,? said Smith, ?but it took a bit of a gamble there at the end to get the lead. I figured it would be close but it worked out.?

With his win and a victory in the Dash for Cash sprint, Smith leads the 9-event 2009 AMA Grand National Twins series with 28 points, followed by Coolbeth with 16 points and Carr with 15 points.

The 2009 AMA Grand National Twins Championship will next race on June 20 on the Volunteer Speedway half-mile, in Bulls Gap, Tenn.

The Screamin’ Eagle Flat Track team is sponsored by Matco Tools.

DRAWING LESSON FROM BIKERNET ART INSTITUTE–Probably what you’re noticing in this drawing is the looseness. It’s almost falling apart!

The actual drawing technique itself has evolved over the courseof the build of the 5 Ball Racer. I’ve tried to give them the lookof the Benday process invented by Benjamin Day.

It uses dotsof a consistent size and gives a beautiful range of values thatworked well on newsprint. If you followed the Buzz Sawyer comicstrip created by Roy Crane in the L.A. Examiner when you werekid, that was done using Benday. On the artists end of it there werespecial papers that when wetted with an emulsifier (toxic no doubt)would reveal textures consisting of tiny dots which did not requireexpensive printing plates to reproduce.

Later on zip-a-tone arrivedand you would press down the semi-transparent sheets over yourinked line drawing and then cut out the shapes as needed to createshading (values). Tedious work requiring a lot of white out, boxesof number eleven Exacto blades and late nights.

Dick Allenridingaway

I’ve tried to duplicatethat look by using a cartridge brush pen (Pentel FP10) for the linework over the original pencil drawing (HB pencil) on smooth finish2 ply Bristol board and then adding the halftone effect (the shading)using a Derwent colorsoft pencil (Black C650). The important thingis to decide on the direction of the light source while doing the originalpencil drawing and sticking with it all the way through.

The Captain, Chris Carr of Chris Carr Racing, piloted his XR750 equipped with a dyno-tuned D&D custom pipe to a podium and a thrilling 3rd place finish. With the laps running down, Carr and eventual race winner, Bryan Smith, were running wheel to wheel.

Lady Luck had left the building as the last lap draft-fest left Carr in third. Smith took 1st, Coolbeh 2nd with Mees Cummings and Kopp all the lead draft at the line.
