BIKERNET MEDICAL CENTER FINDING FROM DR. WEIL–Today we look at nutrition and its relationship to cancer. A healthy diet can help the body in its efforts to heal itself, and in some cases, particular foods can lessen the risks of serious illness. To help reduce your risk of some types of cancer, try the following:

Avoid polyunsaturated vegetable oils, margarine, vegetable shortening, all partially hydrogenated oils, and all foods that might contain trans-fatty acids (such as deep-fried foods).

Increase omega-3 fatty acids by eating more cold water oily fish, freshly ground flaxseeds, and walnuts.

Reduce consumption of animal foods and try to replace them with vegetable proteins such as whole soy products.

Use hormone-free, organically produced products whenever possible.

Eat plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables.

Eat shiitake, enokitake, maitake, and oyster mushrooms frequently.

Drink green tea daily.

Sandblaster

STUDENT OF BIKERNET STAFFER DR. NUTTBOY SURFACES–My former art teacher, Ladd Terry, aka Dr. Nuttboy, told me to get in touch with you – so here I am. In short, I’m a 17-year-strong tattoo artist and lifetime San Pedro resident who had a calling to do something completely different when it comes to artistically customizing bikes.

For about 10 years I’ve worked to develop a sandblasted etching process that would allow me to get awesome, multi-dimensional artistic effects on chrome and glass. No lasers, no computers, no clip art designs – just my art, by hand.

I love bikes a hell of a lot more than cars, so I’ve pretty much devoted myself to motorcycle etching exclusively. I can etch any chrome part, mirror or windshield with nearly any design. Our company is called Bad Ass Chrome & Glass ( www.badasschromeandglass.com ).

We’ve got three little kids and am working hard to make a real go of this. We pulled together enough cash for one of those mini ads in Easyriders, and we just displayed at the Long Beach Motorcycle Swapmeet. .

5-BALL FACTORY RACER PAINT COLOR SCHEME– I like how the Racer is coming together- after seeing Chris Kallas’ comments on his site yesterday, I’m inclined to go along with his ideas for the paint job, especially the weathering (“patina”) option.

I realize it’s your baby and your decision, but I think he may have a point. It would look cool.

freedom isnt free

SHASTA RALLY, OPERATION GRATITUDE AND MEMORIAL DAY THOUGHTS–I saw your headline & I want you to know that you have my family’s & my sincere condolences. My fine son was USAF. He was stationed on Diego Garcia repairing generators & bomb lifts during Operation Iraqi Freedom. He is home now, coaching high school football & teaching Sophomore English. I missed him every day he was overseas. I cannot imagine losing a son.

Too many Americans take our freedom for granted. Freedom is bought by blood! You have my family’s & my biker brothers & sisters eternal gratitude & sympathy. When a son or daughter goes off to war, their family’s & their friends’ hearts follow. No one rests easy until they return. If they don’t return, then, Americans need to shower the family who sustained this most unbearable loss with love & appreciation. Even then, I cannot imagine your family’s & your grief.

My co., South Bay Biker Productions, puts this event on each Independence Day weekend. We sponsor Operation Gratitude (www.operationgratitude.com) & the American Veterans Traveling Tributes (www.avtt.org) – the “Cost of Freedom” & “Traveling Wall” – a football field of the replica display of the Wall in DC as well as similar size displays honoring those who gave their lives in other American War campaigns & 911.

The theme of the Rally is to honor American soldiers who give us the freedom to ride our motorcycles anywhere we want in the greatest country in the world. If you don’t have plans on the 4th, please join us as my guest. The riding is beautiful.

Outside of my own family, bikers are the best family I have ever had. EzJ 877-688-4229 & www.shastarally.com shoot me your email address, mailing address & phone #, I’ll hook you up!

–Jeff Kraus

Thank you very much for the condolences and the invite. Unfortunately, I am working (gotta pay the bills) and saving any extra days I have off for a 5 state 3000+ mile ride this summer with attendance at the Gathering of the Patriot Guard in Ogden UT in August.

I did take Fri/Sat/Sun off to fly back to Arlington to lay a wreath with my son. Having his resting place so far from me is a bit hard, but his lovely wife wanted him resting with the legendary heroes. Since he was the first of the fallen in Iraq and they lived in Virginia at the time, she wanted him laid to rest there. And I have to admit, every time I go back there, I can see it was a wonderful decision as it is such a peaceful place and very beautiful.

So now I go back to work today, and every day until that time that it is time for me to go home and reunite with my wonderful son. Thank God for my BON friends, and of course 2-wheels and the freedom it brings.

I will put your rally in my list of possible rides for next year, and again thank you for the invite. I honor you and the riders that ride with you for all that you do for our heroes, and I am sincerely happy for you and your family that your son did return safe, and as you said, when a soldier goes off to war, the families heart goes with them and does not return till he or she is home safe. My heart is still in Iraq where my hero fell, but I will get it back soon enough.

I am forever thankful for the brotherhood (and sisterhood) of those who ride, and their patriotism. May we never lose that feeling of family and loyalty to those who serve to keep us free.

May God bless and ride with you my friend, and watch over you and yours.

WOMAN RIDER TESTS2008 BMW R 1200 GS DURING CROSS-COUNTRY RIDE–Owner: Monica Holmes, Manhattan, New YorkMonica’s height: 6 feet.

The BMW R 1200 GS is one of the most successful production models for the company. BMW began as a producer of aircraft engines in 1913 and produced motorcycles before it produced cars. In 1921 it developed the M2 B15 known as the first “Boxer” motorcycle. The production motorcycles began as the R series and one of the most successful models was the R2 in 1930 selling more than 15,000 units.

That tradition continues today. The R 1200 GS is one of BMW’s most successful production models with more than 100,000 units sold. The model is a dual purpose bike that can be ridden on the black top, busy city streets or on dirt roads. The engine is an air/oil cooled, 1170cc, flat twin, four stroke with a six speed manual transmission. The bike weight is just over 550 pounds and has a 33-inch seat height. The bike has an on board computer and the ability to adjust the suspension at the touch of a button.

The GS was a natural fit for me. My first bike was a 2006 Suzuki V-Strom 650 and that was great for the first two seasons. When it was time to take a solo cross country trip, there was no question about the bike I was going to ride. In my search for speed, power, safety and endurance, I kept coming back to the same bike, the BMW 2008 R 1200 GS.

WomenriderBMW

In prepping for a ride from Manhattan, New York, to Los Angeles, California, I thought the bike was a little overkill, I was wrong. This is a big bike with an intimidating look. The horsepower and torque have gotten me out of some hairy situations. The heated grips kept me warm in the Rockies. The anti-lock brakes stopped on a dime and the 5.3 gallon fuel tank with 45-50 mpg kept me going and going. The R 1200 GS loved the twisties in the Badlands and the mountain roads of the Black Hills. All of this with a very smooth ride, although with the occasional sore bum.

For a solid week, I rode in the rain and there were times when water was up to the foot pegs. With various construction sites along the way there was a lot of loose gravel on the road and grooved pavement. Whatever the situation, the GS preformed like a champ.

My biggest complaint with the BMW 2008 R 1200 GS was and always will be the seat. At 6 feet even with a 36-inch inseam, I do not have the standard complaint with the bike height and I like the flexibility of the stock seat. The design allows it to be raised or lowered. However, no matter what position it is in, it just isn’t very comfortable after a few hours of riding. With an MSRP north of $14,500, the bike could have a cushier seat.

All in all, I love the BMW R 1200 GS. It is a great motorcycle. The versatility of this motorcycle is unmatched. I ride in Manhattan and love the zippy feel in traffic. On the open road, this bike has proven it can go the distance in widely varied conditions with gusto. I have never felt safer or more confident on a motorcycle.

SHASTA RALLY SUPPORTS OPERATION GRATITUDE–On Sunday , I rode from Redondo Beach, CA to the National Guard Armory in Van Nuys to participate in sending Operation Gratitude?s (www.operationgratitude/com ) 450,000th CARE package to our soldiers deployed in Iraq & Afghanistan. I was also at OPGrat?s HQ as a messenger. Carolyn Blashek, OP Grat?s co-founder, asked me to make the announcement that South Bay Biker Productions & the Shasta Salute to America Motorcycle Rally Staff had finally secured a custom motorcycle that will be designed, built from scratch & donated by Monty Hardt of Klamath Custom Cycles.

Gratitudestage

The keys to the new bike will be in Operation Gratitude 500,000th CARE package which will be tracked & given to a deployed American soldier this Christmas. During the announcement, I called Monty so he could be introduced and say ?hello? to OPGrat?s volunteers over the Armory?s PA system. When introduced, a big cheer went out for Monty followed by thunderous applause. The Military Channel has agreed to cover the service member’s receipt of the milestone package. Monty?s motorcycle will be delivered to the recipient when they return stateside to their home military base.

Monty is a modest man. His only request is to be present so he can see the soldier?s face when they take delivery of his bike. Monty told me, ?This is the most important thing I have ever done in my life.?

Gratitudecrowd

Monty has 2 daughters. Both are currently serving our country ? 1 is in the Army and the other is in the National Guard. A rendering of the bike will be on display at Monty?s booth at the Shasta Salute to America Motorcycle Rally which is held annually over Independence Day weekend. Monty will also be running our burnout pit at the Rally. (He assured me that he will be bringing plenty of fresh tires.) Operation Gratitude?s founders, Mrs. Blashek & SSG Elizabeth Cowie will also be leading the American Veterans Traveling Tributes escort from Klamath Falls Home Depot to the Tulelake-Butte Valley Fairgrounds on Wednesday morning, July 1st , running the OPGrat booth & both of these American heroes will be speaking at the AVTT Dedication ceremony held at the Rally on Sunday morning.

This is part of what the Shasta Salute to America Motorcycle Rally is about. How do you like them apples!

LET FREEDOM RING–It’s strange to live in a time where safety and security become priorities over freedom. I have a pal who feels freedom is dead, unnecessary, even pass?. But freedom is the basis for everything we’ve accomplished. I don’t know, how do you feel?

Watch for Ken’s work truck rebuild tech tomorrow.

Okay, I’ll leave it alone. I’ll find a whiskey bottle, an illegal chopper to ride and a nasty woman to hang out with. I suppose I’ve always been an outlaw of sorts, and it ain’t gonna change.
